Aging Out Children

Update June 2016: He is non-verbal and was in a laying room most of the time, but last summer he went to camp and spent 10 days free. He apparently came alive at camp. He’s a sweet sweet little guy. He was walking and interacting at camp. His diagnosis is autism/speech issues and mental delay.

He has been transferred to the adult mental institution. He needs out NOW.

Jolina is a darling girl, waiting for her forever family! She has some features of FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome). This is a cautionary disclosure, not a diagnosis.

Update from April 2014: Jolina is a beautiful girl and she is very sweet! Her eyes are mesmerizing and full of hope and excitement. She is attentive to her nannies and seems to follow their instructions well. Jolina longs for attention and it is obvious that she has a desire for a family. She immediately wanted to call me “mama” and she patted the bench to let us know she wanted us to sit down near her. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet but she was walking around the room and she pulled a chair over to sit right in front of us. Jolina didn’t say much while we were in the room, so its hard to say how much she talks. Her orphanage was lovely and we would adopt from there again if given the choice. Jolina’s photo does not do her justice and sadly she seems very overlooked! We can’t wait to see Jolina with her forever family!

Kristopher finally available again!! Kristopher is a handsome young man with blonde hair and brown eyes. He is very active and is said to be always happy, but he is quite delayed. Kristopher has significant vision issues, which may or may not be correctable. He shows many facial and medical features of FAS.

From a family who met him in early 2014: Kristopher is such a sweet boy, and I think he would have so much potential in a loving home! He is very small for his age; he was 6, but looked like about 4 years old. He was definitely more mentally delayed than the other boys in his group, but he could answer questions appropriately, followed directions, could eat by himself and get dressed to go outside with little help. One time we played a game like ring-around-the-rosy, and he knew the words to the song and how to play along. He loved when my husband lifted him up high in the air. His eyesight is poor, and they said he is blind in one eye. He had trouble doing a puzzle, but we weren’t sure if it was a cognitive issue, or because he couldn’t see the pieces well. They told us he has some sort of heart condition, which might require surgery. We did see him showing rocking behavior at times. He got along well with the other kids, although he often played by himself, probably because of cognitive differences. He is so precious and really needs a family!

From a family who met him in October 2012: Kristopher is a super-sweet boy who is 5 but looks 2 and is happy ALL the time. He needs to live near a large medical facility, have heart surgery (unless it’s too late), and probably needs a small family that can commit to pretty full care for him. He is darling!

From someone who met her in June 2013: “She was one of my absolute favorite kids I met! She is just the sweetest thing. She is diagnosed with MR not sure she really is. She was giggling and introduced herself by saying her name. She has a huge smile! She has a special nanny that does PT with her. She was bed bound when I met her but she came from a very good orphanage before she was transferred here. She needs out now!!”

Lucas LOVES music!!! They have him a music player, and he is SO happy with it!!! Unfortunately it looks like he get a some sedative medicines, but of course everybody denies it. He is mostly non-verbal, but he CAN say: I want to eat! You know WHY he CAN say it, don’t you?
He is waiting for a family since 2014! He will be transferred very soon to the place where he won’t live very long. He needs a family ASAP!

This boy used to cry a lot before. He needs his family ASAP! Recently he was at health and recreation resort where lots of nationals spend their vacation. So he got good social experience and made good progress in his communication skills. He has a good potential. If he is not chosen for adoption within next year they will place him in a handicapped children and adults orphanage forever where more likely he will be a bedridden person with no chance for normal life.

From a family who met her in January 2014: Maia is a sweet little girl. She was able to follow orders and do everything that her teacher asked her to do. She doesn’t speak but giggled a lot and made some noises. Her doctor said that while she was unsure if Maia would speak, she felt the prognosis was good. Her eyes are crossed. Vision and hearing are otherwise fine. Maia has mental delays and would benefit from focused attention and education. Maia is lively and active and ready for a family who is ready to play!

Piper dear, where is your mama? Sweet girl has a lot of needs; a family could drastically change her life — otherwise, she is one who could be destined to spend her life in a laying down room.

What a CUTIE! Presley is a sweet boy with blonde hair and bright blue eyes. He is a very happy and affectionate child. Presley will benefit so greatly from having a loving family! More photos available.

Updated Nov 2013: He is a very sweet child. Seemed to listen to instructions well. Participated in group activities (like dance and singing). Longing for attention, affection, and stimulation. He does not currently have leukemia; but he has mental delays, and his head is very flat.

Rylan has been transferred.

Eric is a smiley little fellow who likes to feel his caretaker’s heartbeat or pulse, because it comforts him. He would be a wonderful little brother in a household of older children.

Overall, he is healthy and would do well in a family without smaller children. His upper body is quite strong and he has full use of his hands, fingers and arms, but he has little control or movement in his lower limbs and they are significantly smaller than his upper body. He can squeeze very tightly with his hands, and reach a full arm’s length with no problems even though his resting position is the one you see in the pictures. He does not talk, according to the caretakers but does make sounds to communicate. Cognitively, he has significant delays due to his history of spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He is very much still an infant in many ways.

He may have a sister a few years older in a different region who possibly could also be available for adoption or he could be adopted separately. She also has special needs.

He was placed into institution this July 2015 (transferred from a different orphanage). He cannot concentrate his attention; he understands speech addressed to him but keeps doing what he wants to; a kind of “runner”.

Sweet love needs a family, or she’s destined to a life lying in a crib. She has a host of needs; a family will need to be well prepared — but she deserves the chance to bloom!

Too serious!

He got very sick in 2015 and went through a number of procedures and while being in a hospital, his mother abandoned him. He is now cured although they keep monitoring him but he desperately needs a family to love and support him and to give back his faith into the family.

Musa is well-mannered and well-meaning child. Follows the daily regime in the CFTA and every day marks progress. His vocabulary is still not very rich because he did not even know Bulgarian until two years ago. He still has some difficulties in choosing the right words. Musa constantly enriches his vocabulary and progresses in this area. His fine motor skills are very well developed, but he still has some difficulties with writing. He is learning to read and already recognizes the individual letters. Musa knows the geometric figures. Now he is able to solve simple tasks with addition and subtraction tasks. Due to the history of his placement and neglect, the child still has difficulties at school and his performance level is lower than this of his peers. But he is willing to learn and does his best.

Musa is quite shy, passive, silent and closed. He has difficulties in communication with strangers and difficult to trust. Musa does not like to be left alone and he is afraid of that. If things do not happen in the way he wanted, it is possible to close in himself. After spending some time in reasoning on what has happened, he realizes that closing in himself, may not be the best way to deal with problems.

In relationship with his peers, Musa is a leader. He has a fighting spirit and likes to win in the games. In his relationship with adults Musa shows respect for their authority. Obeys and seeks for their approval. This has largely contributed to the great progress the child has been making in the past two years.

In his spare time, Musa likes to play soccer. He also plays basketball. He also likes to color and to play on a tablet. His favorite color is blue. Favorite food sausages, dessert – ice-cream and fruit – banana. His favorite footballer is Ronaldo and dreams of becoming a soccer player when he grows up. From the animals he mostly likes dogs.

Musa has difficulties in talking for the adoption, but in general his attitude is positive.

Alder needs a family, to spare her from a life in a crib, and reach her full potential.

Giada has grand mal seizures (with small seizures (petit mal) or without them), unspecified; congenital malformation syndromes predominantly affecting facial appearance; genetic syndrome – chromosomopathy or monogenic syndrome; facial dysmorphism; psychological and behavioral disorders related to past trauma. More information is available from the agency for interested parents. Giada is on medication for her seizures.

Family history: the child’s biological mother has mental delay, epilepsy- grand mal seizures (she had Depakine during pregnancy) and cerebrovascular disease; the child’s biological father had mental delay and abused alcohol.

Giada is sociable and outgoing girl. She interacts and looks for contact with peers and adults. She is able to cooperate with other children from her class. Giada loves to draw and color, as well as to solve puzzles. She prefers to play with her peers or older children. She loves to play with children younger than her so she can take care of them. She cooperates in games.

Giada knows what adoption means and she dreams about being adopted and have a forever family of her own.

UPDATE: Oct. 2018: Giada is physically well developed for her age with mild neuropsychological developmental delay. Her Epilepsy (petit mal seizures) is well managed with medication. She has a well developed fine and gross motor skills. She can read and write. She loves to paint and to play sports. She has a well-developed imagination.

She attends a public school and is doing very well there. Her dream is to become a teacher one day. Giada is not shy. She is able to communicate easily and maintain a dialogue with her classmates and adults. She has good hygiene habits.

Despite her CP diagnosis, Prudence is able to go up and down the stairs and walk independently, albeit her gait is not very stable.

She is nonverbal. Prudence does not understand other people’s speech and she tends to self-isolate. Prudence likes to cuddle with an adult and likes it when someone is talking gently to her. She loves listening to music and even starts smiling and dancing in her own way.

Prudence hasn’t developed any self-service skills and fully depends on the caregivers in the facility. She cannot control her physiological needs (she wears dippers). Her sleep is calm.

Aria is able to walk by using a mobility aid – a walker. She can go up and down the stairs while holding onto the railings. She can maintain a sitting position while sitting on a chair, even without seat restraints.

Aria is emotionally stable and has adequate emotional responses in different situations. She enjoys being the center of attention. Aria names animals, fruits and vegetables, counts up to 10, says the alphabet with some help from an adult, and names the children and the staff members by name. She participates in group activities with other children. She is sensitive to the other person’s emotional state and observes his/her reactions. Aria enjoys looking at children’s books and recognizes the familiar objects and animals on the pictures.

Area eats common food independently with a small spoon or fork.The child drinks from a cup. Due to her physical disability, she cannot bath herself independently. She goes to the toilet on her own. The child washes her hands and brushes her teeth on her own.

Allison is a beautiful, giggly girl who lives with a foster family in Eastern Europe. Allison is an active child. She runs, jumps, catches a ball with two hands or kicks it with a leg, and climbs and descends stairs with the support of a railing. Allison likes to connect with others, is interested in other children, and includes them in her games. She enjoys playing with dolls and likes to show others all her toys.

Allison enjoys the extra attention she receives from her foster parents.

Allison is physically healthy. She is eating well, and her weight and height are catching up with the standards for her age. She has some developmental delays that her caregivers attribute to early neglect and lack of stimulation. Allison has difficulty pronouncing some words, and her learning is below the norm for her age. She was in first grade last school year, and the foster family said she loves to go to school.

This playful, adventurous, sweet boy is Liam! He is 8 years old and will absolutely steal your heart. Liam can be quiet and introverted at times, but he is generally a very friendly kid! Whenever volunteers come to the orphanage he cannot wait to take pictures with them. He seems to have an eye for photography – he loves being in pictures and taking pictures of others. He especially likes to come up with funny poses! He can play games cooperatively with other kids, and he has a lot of fun building all kinds of structures out of blocks. Liam likes to be creative and has quite the imagination!

Liam had the opportunity to visit the US as part of the Winter 2016 China Hosting Program! He spent 3 weeks playing, learning, and laughing with his host family. Here is what they shared with us:

“Liam is a very happy little guy with the most contagious giggles you’ll ever hear, and I have no doubt that he’ll bring much joy to his forever family. He is a very energetic and active little guy who enjoys playing outside (at the playground, swinging and going down the slide are favorite activities), but he also is great at entertaining himself indoors by looking at books or “writing” (making marks on paper). He has a great imagination and especially loves to pretend to cook! He plays well with others but just as often seems to enjoy playing independently.

Liam also has a bit of a mischievous streak — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but he does sometimes need help redirecting some of his energy to a more positive activity. I did see improvement throughout his time here with his ability to be redirected, and discipline-wise, short “time-ins” where we sat together quietly on the floor seemed to be most effective.

Liam LOVES to eat…And would eat ALL the time if I let him. He is not picky at all; he’s eaten everything I’ve given him — fruit, veggies, yogurt, meat, pasta, etc. The hardest thing for him is being done with a meal/snack — even if he has had plenty to eat, he still wants more. This does seem to be getting a bit better, though.

It was fun having Liam here & seeing him come out of his shell! He definitely keeps me on my toes because he is very active/into everything, but he has a great imagination that has been fun to watch. He also really has done a GREAT job transitioning into family life/life in the US.”

You can see more photos and videos from Liam’s time in the US on his advocacy page. Liam’s nannies tell us he is learning self-care skills. His recent health has been good, and he is not currently showing any symptoms of heart disease.

Laurel is a beautiful little girl! She came into care when she was about 3 years old, apparently having had little stimulation or training. She was diagnosed with CP, and they began working with her at the orphanage. Laurel has good fine motor skills, and is able to walk without assistance. She is toilet trained (during the day). Her language is a bit behind, although it is difficult to know if that is due to the CP, lack of early education and adult interaction (before she arrived at the orphanage), or just general speech issues. A thorough exam and evaluation when she comes home will be helpful and lead her family in the right direction to help her. Laurel is very sweet, active, and a generally happy little girl! She needs a family!

Lance lives in a large Asian country and has been diagnosed with Down syndrome, postoperative repair of congenital heart disease, bilateral cryptorchidism and postoperative repair of right indirect inguinal hernia. His file states that Lance has good self-care skills, he can fold his clothes, take off his shoes, and put them away. According to his file, he loves listening to his teacher tell stories, he can read simple words, and understand basic questions. Lance’s file says he enjoys finger painting and singing and dancing to songs. His file indicates he likes to run, jump, and play sports.

Korbin still needs adults help to put on and take off his clothes and needs reminders when to do some things like going to the bathroom. Even though he need some help when eating, he is not a picky eater! His favorite foods are dumplings and fruits. His foster family says that he has good motor development and is very coordinated. Korbin is a quiet boy and doesn’t speak. He likes to listen to music and play with toys by himself. He just started studying in the kindergarten class.

Kolton is a natural performer!

Mischievous Kolton loves performing for his nannies, his friends, and any visitors who stop by. This outgoing boy has a good sense of humor and loves to make people laugh. He’s a quick imitator and often encourages the nannies to sit down so he can be the “Teacher”. Kolton was born with Down syndrome and a heart defect. His physical development is good and he can run quite fast! Kolton’s speech is not clear and he only has a few words. He relies mainly on a form of sign language to communicate. Kolton need a family who is ready to access a range of services to help this young actor reach his potential.

From reading 6.5 year old Frannie’s file, it is clear that this girl will do very well in a forever family! And speaking of files, hers is full of information! Frannie likes to play with other children. She also likes to play with dolls, games, and do puzzles. Her favorite foods are apples and eggs and she like to drink milk. She also loves snacks.

At the age of 6, Frannie began going to a special school. She quickly became a favorite. Frannie quickly learned to follow the teachers and learned some sign language. She is learning more gestures, such as one for her name, the numbers 1-10, and a sign for toilet. She has learned to write many numbers and some words. She is an active student in school and she enjoys games and crafts. Frannie won two awards at school- one for “good child prize”, and one for “small pacesetter who helps others prize.” The awards made her very happy and proud. Her overall performance is excellent! Even when she loses a game, she will smile. Frannie needs some help when it comes to fine motor skills, but she is fond of learning and can imitate quite well. She seems to be very interested in gymnastics and can do many tricks. She is flexible and has talent in dancing. Frannie is enthusiastic, outgoing, and fond of learning. All the caretakers in the orphanage love her very much! It is clear that with the love of a forever family and some guidance, this child will make huge gains and will soar!

Ellisyn is an energetic and restless girl. She can be very talkative and she loves listening to music. After coming into care, she was able to live with a foster family and adapted well. Ellisyn learned how to walk steadily, progressed in communication and was able to recognize familiar people. Her doctors say that she is cognitively delayed compared to the other children and suffered from an external hemorrhoid. She is taking medicine for treatment and is now living back in the orphanage so that she can go to kindergarten. Ellisyn knows a huge amount of words and can recognize many objects. Ellisyn gets along well with others and is a joy to be around.

Lyla likes to smile at familiar people. Lyla’s caretakers describe her as shy and well-mannered. She can walk, get out of her bed, find her bed, and get in her bed on her own. She can drink water out of a bottle, grasp biscuits, and use a spoon to eat. She likes to play on her own with rattles and plush toys. Lyla also enjoys playing happily with another child in a crib adjacent to hers. She likes riding the wood horse and will even move the wood horse out to ride it on the playground. Lyla can play on the slide and can do simple morning exercises, along with the teacher. She will watch and listen to anyone talking to her and understands simple instructions, such as ‘put the trash into the trash can.’ She can say “ayi,” “jiejie,” and other simple words. Lyla is not potty trained. Lyla was born with down syndrome and polydactyl of the right thumb. It is clear that she has spent far too much time in a crib, which has led her to be more delayed than most children her age. Lyla needs a family who will get her out, meet her where she’s at, and get her access to the resources she needs to succeed!

There is a $1,500 agency grant for Lyla’s adoption with her current agency.

Mason has an infectious smile! Mason can walk and can go up and down stairs independently. He likes playing on the slide, riding the wood horse on the playground, and chasing and playing with other children. Mason can use a spoon to eat and a cup to drink water. He can put on and take off his own clothes and shoes. Mason is toilet trained and washes his hands after going. He can brush his teeth and wash his face every morning. Mason understands the teacher’s instructions and follows through. He likes to play with toys and read books with other children in the activity room. Mason is described by his caretakers as positive, active, mild-mannered, smiley and kind to others. He can speak, but not clearly. His clearest word is “ayi.” Mason likes to help his caretakers by sweeping the floor, cleaning the table, etc. Mason was born with down syndrome and esotropia.

Mason has good self care skills. He “is sad if you tell him no.” He doesn’t talk much, but does make simple noises and can say some simple words. He attends the special education school. He is a happy child. Mason helps his teacher clean up the classroom. His teacher enjoys him and reports he is a high functioning child.

There is a $1,500 agency grant for Mason’s adoption with his current agency.

Would you look at these glowing almond eyes!? Derek reminds me so much of Reece! Derek is diagnosed with Down syndrome and congenital heart disease. He lives in a foster family on the grounds of the orphanage and participates in the Little Sister program. Derek is described as outgoing, extroverted, and active. He enjoys school and enters the classroom every morning with a smile as he greets the teacher and other children. He loves to help his teacher as well as the children who are not mobile. Derek enjoys sports and does well in running and kicking and passing the ball. He enjoys drawing, dancing, singing, and playing games. An orphanage project team visited with Derek last summer.

My name is Delano, and I was born with Down syndrome, but that doesn’t slow me down! My caretakers say that I am bright and active, and that I love to help out other kiddos! There is even more information about me in my full file, so please ask to find out more about me!

From her 2012 file- Nannette has normal body and intellectual development. At the age of 4 years, she can take care of herself, have a meal, go to toilet, read, and draw lines and scribble. She can walk and run. Nannette’s Language, personality and emotion development is delayed. She is introverted and not talkative. Usually when she communicates with adults, she can understand adults, but she responds less or responds in a low voice, we can’t hear clearly. When Nannette gets along with children, she is talkative and usually happy. In her diet, she has good appetite and good digestion; when it’s time for meal, she is anxious about, even loses her temper. In life, Nannette is an obedient child, and often willing to help the aunt to do something that she can do, such as putting away milk containers, taking diapers, picking up garbage and taking out the trash and so on. Now with her growing slowly, she can learn from imitating continuously, and learns more and more. Now she can draw lines and scribbles and sing children’s songs and so on.

This boy can dance…no doubt about it! Meet Nicholas! No updates since 2009, so the agency asked for video and a report. He has been hiding his talent for a long time! Nicholas has Down syndrome and a CHD (mitral valve thickening – the cardiologist said to monitor him for any difficulty, but he has been fine according to the orphanage staff). Nicholas’ development has been good. He is outgoing, active, and loves to dance! He also loves to play outdoors. Nicholas has been waiting for a long time for a family of his own!

Daisy loves to dance and listen to music. She enjoys being her foster mom’s little helper and is very protective and helpful with her little foster sister. She is learning how to help in the kitchen by cutting vegetables, cooking and folding clothes. She watches the cartoon heroes on TV and imitates saving the world. She is noted to be very verbal and loves to be cuddled.

Gracie Lynne is a precious little girl! She came to the orphanage when she was 10 months old (estimated age). Gracie Lynne has Down syndrome, and her motor skills are good. She can dress herself (including her shoes), and her other self care skills are good. Gracie Lynne loves to play with the other kids. During her physical exam, she was uncooperative for the eye exam and hearing tests (imagine that!). The doctor suggested she have a further hearing screening, which had not been done when her file was completed late February. There is no mention of any hearing issues in her Growth Report. Gracie Lynne is a sweetheart, and needs a family. Her favorite activity is cuddling with her nanny while watching TV. Who could resist that?

Grace is outgoing, smiles often, and likes playing with other children. She is a beautiful girl and is curious about the outside world. When intrigued by new objects, she will carefully observe and explore them. She likes meeting new people, and gets along with other children her age. She is a very active 5 year old. She can run and jump, can feed herself and use the restroom by herself. She can take on and off her clothing independently. She understands the meaning of “no”, can call “father”, “mother”. She can say “one, two” “give” “want” “fetch.” She enjoys listening to music and singing loudly. Even though nobody can understand what she is singing and yelling, she is very happy and involved in it. Even though she does not like speaking, she is very smart and observant. Grace likes to help the aunt to do some housework, such as folding the quilts and picking up toys. When the caretakers are holding the young children and they drop their toys, Grace will take the initiative to retrieve the toys. When the aunts want to feed the babies, Grace will take the initiative to bring them a towel. Her favorite fruits are bananas and small tomatoes. She also likes desserts.

Mary is a beautiful little girl. She is described as sunny and is said to enjoy singing, dancing, playing games, and building with toy blocks. She can say some simple words, such as “thank you, teacher,” “aunt,” “Good morning!” and “I want to eat ___.” Mary likes to learn new things while in her special education class and she will often raise her hand to answer questions in class, despite not being able to give a clear answer. She likes to help her classmates find their seats and will follow along when singing children’s songs during the music lesson or when she hears a song on TV. Mary gets along well with her teachers and her peers. She likes playing with toys with her friends and is good at sharing. She sometimes isn’t the best listener and will smile at the caretaker and do her own thing. Mary has good motor skills. She is able to sit, stand, walk, run, and jump on her own. She is active in PE class. Mary can eat, put on clothes, and wash up independently. She will sometimes help the caretaker fold blankets and clothes. Mary likes to give her morning exercise leader hugs and isn’t afraid to report a child who is not doing what they are supposed to be doing. At night, Mary can take off her shoes, socks, and clothes on her own before going to bed. She is good at folding her clothes and she enjoys sleeping.

Noadiah lives in a foster family on the grounds of the orphanage and participates in the Little Sister program. Noadiah is active, energetic and happy. He likes to sing, recite poems, and likes to play with toy cars. He walks with the use of a walker, but cannot walk alone at this time. Noadiah understands instructions well and follows directions. He loves to play outside.

This cutie is Sammy. He has Down syndrome which has resulted in his development being just a bit behind his peers, but he is doing just fine. He loves to play with toys and listen to music….he will sing along when he is happy. When he meets someone for the first time he is initially shy, but quickly warms up and before long he considers them good friends.
