A Child for the Kaplewski Family — WI
Guess what? The Kaplewski Family is growing through adoption! Our family is hoping to welcome a new child into our home and hearts.
While adopting domestically is a beautiful thing, adopting internationally is still a great need today! Adoption agency Holt International points out in a blog post that we “still unfortunately live in a world where not every child can remain in the loving care of their birth family, or even join an adoptive family in their country of birth”.
We were initially drawn to the poorer countries in Eastern Europe. Our family shares varied interests in Eastern Europe, collectively speaking three different Eastern European languages. Add in extended family, and we’ve got five Eastern European languages covered with greater or lesser degrees of fluency. Plus, we wanted to choose a country that is part of the Hague Convention, which ensures safe and ethical adoption processes.
In international adoption, children that are harder to place often become ‘waiting children’. They are either older or have more complex special needs. It’s a type of adoption that has a special pull on our hearts. And, it is what we are now pursuing.
However, to provide a home for a child in need, our family is facing over $60,000 in qualified adoption expenses. These expenses include program fees, legal and immigration expenses, and travelling to meet and bring our child home. To date, we’ve already covered our initial adoption expenses out of pocket: about $15,000 in home study expenses, program fees, and US immigration fees. So, we still have a long road ahead of us financially to make a difference in a child’s life and give her or him a loving home.
Pope John Paul II once said, “To adopt a child is a great work of love. When it is done, much is given, but much is also received. It is a true exchange of gifts.” Our family is being called to pour out ourselves in love for another waiting child. Will you be able to help us in answering our call?
