Kai

Boy, Born October 2007

ABIhktk–Down Syndrome

Kai REALLY needs a family, one who is experienced with his medical needs.

Present Carer:  Having lived in a hospital for nearly 3 years, Kai was transferred and has been living in the present Child Care Home since October 13, 2010.  He is more delayed socially as a result of so much time in the hospital, but is a darling boy who will thrive in his own family.

Present Development:  Kai was found to have Down syndrome, Hirshsprung’s disease, congenital hypothyroidism, congenital heart disease and bilateral hearing deficit at birth.  Though his medical condition is stable after he received medical treatment and surgeries, he is prone to illnesses, such as pneumonia, fever, running nose and gastroenteritis.  Because of Hirshsprung’s disease, he usually has loose excretion and sometimes diarrhea.  He is not interested in eating.  At present, he always has milk and puree.  When there is someone familiar nearby, he behaves better; takes his bottle or eats with a spoon.  However, when he sees no familiar worker around, he does not want to eat, sometimes even cries and needs to be spoon fed.

As described, he is nice but passive and introverted.  He tends to be restless when meeting new peoples, new things and in new environment.  Usually, he needs to warm up for a while until he feels comfortable to try.  During playtime, he loves to play with blocks and flap over children story book alone.  He needs companion and encouragement in order to ride on a car, sit on a swing and climb up the stairs of a slide and slide down from the top.  He manages to use single words to express his view and responds to questions.  He says “play”, “good”, “no” in Cantonese.  Sometimes, not only babbling, he tries to imitate some new words when hearing them.  He sometimes refuses to play when he feels unhappy.  Though his right ear is weak in hearing, he is not required to wear hearing aid.
