Update, Jan 2020: She still cannot stand or walk independently. She needs someone for support. Just an aside — With all the layers and slippers she is wearing, it would be hard to learn to walk. Her area doesn’t have centralized heating and she is in a foster family where they may be doing a lot for her too.

Update Oct 2019: She can now crawl, but she cannot walk. She can stand alone and can squat. I think she would be able to talk, but she is scared. Her health is good. She is a bit chubby, she needs to be fed often. She is very interested in music. When music is playing, she can keep up with the rhythm/tempo and will try to jump to the music, but her feet don’t get off the ground. She can’t speak yet, but can recognize words. She can understand simple commands. She is warm towards people. Her foster parents are elderly. They only sent over one picture. The rest are from a recent home visit. Occasionally, she will say “baba” or “mama” and she says it very clearly. But, she doesn’t make any requests when she calls out. She knows her body parts and her 5 senses. She understands the meaning of “no.” She currently has 16 teeth.

Eliza is a delightful little one; she is such a happy and social little girl. Eliza was born with Down syndrome, and has the typical motor delays. She has had surgery to correct her heart issues; ASD/VSD/PDA, and has recovered well. Eliza lives with a foster family, to whom she is very close. She loves to play, and loves toys that make music. She is spunky, sweet, and waiting for a family of her own!

There are many recent photos and videos in her file!

Brodie

Boy, Age: 14
Region: Asia
Primary Diagnosis: Down syndrome
Listed: Feb 2021
*** I am eligible for a $15,000 Older Child Grant! For more information or to inquire about this child, please email childinquiry@reecesrainbow.org ***

His written update is from Feb 2021!  Compared with other kids with Down syndrome, his intelligence is better. He is potty trained, follows instructions, and eats on his own, etc.  Brodie is a good listener, well behaved, and enjoys playing outside. Brodie is a warm-hearted little boy. When he sees his little friends sad, he will go to comfort him and touch his head.

Brodie is an outgoing and happy boy. Brody spent a significant amount of time living at and being cared for by a children’s home. When he first arrived there, he was not talking and was angry. He grew and changed so much while in their care. When guests would come, he learned how to take the initiative to greet and play with them. He loves watching cartoons and dancing. In fact, he dances quite well, and everyone loves to watch him dance! While at this home, Brody also loved to go to school and play with the other children. He was said to be carefree and happy every day.

The folks at Shepherd’s Field said this when Brodie was in their care: The best words to describe Brodie are pure sunshine! He is quite eager to be a part of whatever happens to be going on around him. He’s very animated and has a great sense of humor. He doesn’t have a shy bone in his body and his ready smile will light up any occasion. Brodie can find joy in the most ordinary of circumstances—like simply getting his hair cut. Our little man certainly wears his extra chromosome very well! Although his verbal skills are significantly delayed, he has made great strides in using alternate means of communication, such as American Sign Language and picture systems. In fact, he performed the ASL version of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” during one of our Children’s Day performances. Hugs and kisses flow freely when Brody’s around and he truly is one of our little superstars! Sadly, at some point, Brody was recalled to his home orphanage.

Brodie is a boy overflowing with affection and he needs a loving family to shine his sunbeams on. What could be better than a lifetime of unconditional love?

There is a $1,500 agency fee reduction for Brodie’s adoption with his current adoption agency.

This little cub is Shane! He has an update from May of 2018, when he was 14 months old: Shane is a cute, strong and chubby boy. He can stretch out tongue, has less saliva, can roll over at 360 degrees from supine to prone position and from prone to supine position, and can prop to sit forward with hands. When he is lying on the mat at prone position, he can prop to raise head and chest with both hands, could move his head and neck freely, could prop with single elbow, pick up the toy before him with the other one and put into his mouth to bite. When he is lying on the mat at supine position, he can watch his hands before his eyes, and can hold both feet and wave. He can grasp and wave the toy when it is passed to him. He can hold one toy in each hand, exchange the toy from one hand to the other one, and put the toy into his mouth and bite. When he is held erectly, he can move his head and neck freely, can track moving toys with his head and eyes. He is comfortable when he is sitting against the caretaker or in the children’s chair. When the toy is dropped, he can look over. He likes interaction with the caretaker. When playing hide and seek, he can remove the towel if put it on his face. When the caretaker blows to his brows, he can close his month and narrow his eyes in a line. The caretaker often pulls his hand to pat or puts his hand on his month to beat WOW. After stopping for a while, he could stretch out hands to pat or beat WOW. The caretaker often lets him lie on the bucky ball to practice his waist muscle as the bucky ball turns back and forth. He knows his name a little. The caretaker calls his name, he stops a while and looks over, responds “a” once sometimes. When the caretaker’s voice is serious, he cries. When the caretaker teases him softly, he laughs happily. He does not reject the stranger to hold him. The caretaker often takes him to enjoy the sunshine and breathe the fresh air in the garden when it is sunny. He has a good appetite, can eat steamed egg, fruit puree, little steamed buns and nutritious congee, etc.

Shane Yu is the sweetest little guy!  Agency staff met him when he was only 5 months old, and he was already a champion cuddler! But, my goodness, has he ever grown up since then. Shane is described as a shy, quiet baby who prefers to be held by his foster mom. He lives in a foster home with 5 foster siblings. He sits independently and crawls. He likes to play with toys and can feed himself finger foods. He makes happy noises and vocalizes, but isn’t saying words yet.

Shane Yu has a $4,000 grant through his current agency.

Ten year old Shannon is a giggly and friendly girl. Her report from 2011 states she could say several words and stand without assistance. Shannon’s videos from 2016 shows her standing, throwing a ball against the wall, and catching it to repeat the process. Her file shows that she is well-loved by everyone she meets and likes to interact with other children.

UPDATE: Rule number one…never leave scissors out where Shannon can get them. She currently has little to no bangs due to an attempt to style her own hair. However, even a bad haircut can’t take away from Shannon’s sweet spirit and lovable personality! She is currently 5 years old, and waiting very patiently for her mama and papa. Shannon has Down syndrome, an ASD and VSD (which have not been repaired) , and is a HepB carrier. Shannon came to the orphanage at about 7 months of age, already able to sit and crawl. She has good motor skills, but needs help with her speech. Her receptive speech is good, and she follows directions. Shannon can use 3 word sentences. Shannon is a sweet and huggable girl who is very curious. She loves to play with her friends, and thrives in a noisy environment. Shannon is ready to be part of a loving family, who will help her reach her full potential! Video is available.

UPDATE November 2015, from her caregivers: Shaena is outgoing and lively, but sometimes stubborn. She gets along well with other children. She is very attached to her nannies. She still needs assistance with dressing and other care needs. She is not potty trained, still in a diaper. She sleeps very well, she’s a good eater, and she attends preschool.

From an update 2/2015: Shaena can play well with blocks and she can dance to the music. She can avoid obstacles when pushing carts and she can reach things by standing on her tippy toes. Shaena gets a little aggressive with others when mad. She is healthy, strong, and in good health. She can understand some simple instructions like “give me the paper in your hand, do not climb, sit well, eat”, etc. Shaena can crawl down the bed very quickly and she can walk by herself for a while. She can stand up after falling over and can climb well. Shaena can hold small tiny things and can pull the rope by changing hands. Shaena can pick up and throw balls. She will ask to be held when adults walk by her and she knows if she is being criticizing or praised. When praised, she gets very happy! When you point out her mistakes, she will cry. Shaena’s favorite things to do are imitate, eat, and dance.

Darling Selma loves playing in the water, and she kicks her legs to splash in it every day. Her caregivers say she has bright eyes and a pure heart, and they all adore her. When being cuddled she will touch your face while looking at you sweetly! She loves eating, and will shout happily when she sees a bottle coming, but if you ask her to sleep she’ll roll on her side and grumble. Selma has Down syndrome, and no other known health needs. When she was first admitted into the orphanage she was noted to be malnourished and had eczema on her neck and ear, but with treatment her skin cleared. She had difficulties keeping her milk down and she had poor sucking ability; however, with the proper care these matters improved. Selma’s development is delayed, so she attends rehabilitation training. They are working on crawling, but as of October 2017 she hadn’t mastered it quite yet. She can say ‘mom’ and ‘grandmother’ and will observe the facial expressions of the adults around her. If you walk by her she will make sounds and if you leave her she will cry! Her greatest need if for a family to take her to place called home.

From a missionary who visited with him in August 2010: “Sean was found abandoned by the riverside at the age of 4 months. Sean is doing super and is well loved by his nannies!”

Update from 2012: After his rehabilitation we feel his physical development is very good, he can clearly call father and mother, can sit alone, stand alone, can walk with holding something. He can not walk alone steadily, can feed himself snacks without help, good appetite, likes playing with other children sitting on the floor, occasionally he will challenge his favorite toys with other children. He is very favorable, and we hope him can find a family sooner to have parents to love him to live happier life.

Scotty looks like he is ready to fly into your arms! His update is from October of 2017 and says the following: Scotty is now ten months old. He is very cute and likes stretching out his tongue, has less slobber, likes the caretaker touching him and talking to him face to face. When the caretaker did the passive exercise and moved his limbs, he can stare at the caretaker, and sometimes he makes sounds of “enenen” to respond. He can change from supine to prone position, prone to supine position with turning over at 360 degrees. He can lean forwards and sit alone for a while with his hands propping. When he is prone on the mat, he can prop with both hands to raise his head, can move his head and neck freely, can prop with one elbow with the other hand picking the toy before him. When he is happy, he can use the belly on the mat, open both arms and raise both feet, “flying” position. When he was supine on the mat, he can use one hand to pull the toy hanging under the toy shelf before his chest to wave it, or use one hand to stir or move the toy on the toy shelf to make it turn or move, also can hold his feet with both hands. He can put off socks when he is naughty. When holding him erectly, you do not need to hold his neck. He can track the moving toy left and right with his head and eyes. When he is sitting against the caretaker or in the children’s chair, he feels comfortable. He can grasp the toy when it is passed before him, he can hold one toy in each hand. When the toy drops, he can take a look. He likes interaction with the caretaker. When the caretaker plays hide and seek and puts the towel on his face, he can remove the towel. The caretaker often lets him lie prone on the bucky ball, so the ball can practice his waist muscle as it turns forwards and backwards. He knows his name. When calling his name face to face, he can gaze at you. When the familiar caretaker calls his name, he can turn back to search for the sound source. He likes his caretaker. When the caretaker stretches out her hand and says “ mom hugs you”, he can reach his hands to the caretaker. The caretaker cuddles him up and says “ touch mom’s face”, he can stretch out hands to touch mom’s face. He rejects the stranger. When the stranger calls his name, he can stare at the stranger. But the stranger hugs him, he cries. When sent to his caretaker’s arms, he stops crying. In the sunny day, the caretaker often takes him to the garden to enjoy the sunshine and breathe the fresh air.

Could you be darling Scotty’s forever family?

Sarai is a young girl with a big, bright smile who is always eager to be a helper! She was born in March of 2008 and was diagnosed with Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect for which she received surgery for in 2012. She’s extroverted and she gets along well with her peers in the orphanage. She isn’t a picky eater and has a healthy appetite. She loves being outdoors and her favorite thing to do is slide down the slide at the playground! According to her file, she has normal motor functioning—she can run, jump, and climb the stairs. She likes helping around the orphanage—for example, she’s quick to encourage her caregiver to sit down for a rest by grabbing her a stool, and she’ll clean up a spill if she sees one. She can understand what others are saying to her and can follow directions from caregivers. Our staff was able to meet with her in May of 2015 and during our visit, her caregivers reported that she can understand complex directions and communicate her needs using hand motions and body gestures. Although her file states that she has delayed language development, she can speak the word “mama” and other names. She has great self-care skills such as washing her hands, eating independently, and dressing herself. We have updated photos and videos from our trip of her during playtime for interested families!

Agency staff met with him in May 2015 and we have updated photos and videos for interested families! This current agency also has a $4000 grant available to families who qualify to assist with the cost of this adoption.

At the first sight, we were impressed by her black eyes. Her eyes were big and black, which seemed to talk. As she grew up, we found her hair was beautiful, black and soft. Till now we do not cut her hair. The caretaker likes dressing her and do various hair style for her. She received the surgery of meningocele and hydrocephalus. Now she is diagnosed as cerebral palsy and optic nerve atrophy. Her motion ability is poor and limbs are not powerful. She can turn over, can lie on the stomach, but can not sit. Additionally her mental development is delayed. She can not speak, just makes some unconscious sounds, she seems to dislike toys and not sensitive to the sounds. Now she can eat the fixed food, mainly vegetable, meat, egg, noodles, oatmeal, porridge, rice, etc. She also likes fruits. She rarely has illness.

She is slight, and shorter than other children of her age. Though she has lots of disadvantages, she is still a lovely and happy baby. She likes smiling, especially when someone is talking with her and teasing her. When someone is hugging her, she is quiet and listening to adults’ talk, sometimes she touches the person’s face. She likes noisy, always turns her head to the sounds. When no one plays with her, she will be upset and call unhappily. Though she is a disabled child, she is lovely as other healthy child. She has the same feeling, desires to be loved and cared. We hope she would grow up healthily and happily and she would have a family with warm and love. We believe she can adapt new place and bring happiness to the family. Bless Sarea! Wish she can find her parents soon and have a family. Wish she is peaceful all her life.

He loves to play with toys and listen to music….he will sing along when he is happy. When he meets someone for the first time he is initially shy, but quickly warms up and before long he considers them good friends. He had surgery last summer for an abdominal teratoma; no complications following surgery and no follow uptreatment is necessary according to the surgeon.
