Leigha is a sweet little girl. In July of 2015, when she arrived to her current care center, she could sit alone and was said to be smiley, but also cried a lot. At the time her file was prepared in 2017, she could stand up by holding onto something. Leigha liked to scoot across the floor on her bottom to get a toy she wanted to play with. She likes playing with colorful toys, dolls, and with other children. When she listens to music, she will shake her body to dance. When she was called by her caretaker, she could turn her head to find the sound source. Leigha smiles when people amuse her and she can understand her caretaker. She has a good personality overall, but is sometimes obstinate. Leigha is introverted, shy, and cries easily, but is as cute as can be. She has a good diet and is said to be a steady sleeper. We’re hoping to be able to get an update for Leigha and that she won’t wait much longer!

Meet Lena! She is a huggable and oh-so-sweet little girl who is 2 years old! Lena has no known heart issues. She lives at the orphanage, and has not received as much help with her development as she should. While motor and speech delays are expected with little ones who have Down syndrome, early intervention can really help. Lena is quiet, happy, and a very lovable little one. In fact, her report states she loves hugs! She needs a family soon, and the therapies required to help her with her speech and motor skills. Lena is waiting for you!

Updated February 2019: Sweet Lena has delays, due to her Down syndrome. She is not yet potty-trained, and she is introverted, easy-going, and not fussy. She’s just starting to walk around.

Lena’s current agency has a $5000 grant available for her adoption.

Lee is extremely intelligent. He currently attends class in the little brothers and sisters class. In class, he is learning art and dance. Lee likes to watch cartoons. He will laugh while captively watching them. If you play with him and poke his tummy with your fingers, he will grab his shirt and pull it up; he will then quickly pull it back down to cover his tummy, not letting you see it. His eyes will look slyly at you and then he will secretly laugh. Lee is very intelligent. Even though he is unable to clearly express his own thoughts verbally for the time being, his body language abilities are extremely strong. He can use his hands to signal to you “Greetings”, “Thank you” and other types of movements. Lee is really adorable and intelligent. He is an extremely charming little boy. Beautiful Leia! This sweet little lady has grown and developed well over the years. Leia is a friendly girl, eagerly greeting those she knows. She does have some wariness among strangers, though. She has good self-care skills, including feeding herself and washing her hands. She helps with simple chores, and also speaks in sentences. Her favorite thing to do is draw. Staff reports that she has a great capacity to learn. At her facility, Leia receives therapy for language and motor skills twice daily.

UPDATE: April 2016 Leia is a pretty girl who was very eager to come play when our staff visited in April 2016; she hovered nearby while they talked with other children trying to patiently wait her turn! She is diagnosed with Down syndrome, and they learned from staff that she had surgery for a heart murmur in 2014. They observed nystagmus but the caregivers report it doesn’t seem to affect her vision in daily life. She also has some facial paralysis on her left side, but this was already the case when she came to the orphanage so they don’t know the cause. She was very focused when playing with the toys, and quickly figured out the stacking cups. She did fairly well on the shape sorter, though sometimes she had to try a few times to find the right match. She needed to be looking directly at the lid with the shape holes (straight on) in order to use it. She receives lessons at the orphanage, and is able to point to some colors when asked, but can’t yet count. She tries to put words together in sentences, though her speech isn’t clear. She gets along well with other kids, and loves to hold the babies!

Larsen is a cutie pie, born with down syndrome in July of 2014. Larsen was put into a foster family in December of 2015. He is a good sleeper and has a good appetite and is not a picky eater. He has a pretty good understand of what people are saying to him, but is still only making sounds to communicate with people. He also uses his actions and facial expressions to express himself. He is good at following simple directions. When Larsen sees his foster mother making delicious food, he gets very happy- even his eyes smile, as he makes ‘mmm’ sounds when eating.

Larsen can walk, run, and jump. He can open doors and get things out of reach by moving a chair and climbing up on the chair. He will shake his bottom and dance when he’s happy. Larsen’s hands and feet are flexible. He has good fine motor skills. He likes to clean up messes, imitate pictures he sees on his foster dad’s cell phone, and imitate people walking backwards. Larsen enjoys playing hide-and-seek with his foster sister. When an older neighbor lady visits the family, Larsen will wave his hands happily to greet her. A little brother recently joined the foster family and Larsen will go to the end of the bed to see him every day. Larsen will push the little brother’s stroller and play with him. Larsen likes playing games with his foster sister, playing outdoors in the park, and playing with water. He will sometimes play in the water with his sister in the bathroom when his foster mom is busy or not paying attention. Larsen sounds like a typical little boy who is going to thrive in a forever family! We hope his family sees him soon!

There is a $2,500 agency grant for Larsen’s adoption with a specific adoption agency. Larsen needs a family with an approved home study to be able to hold his file or move forward with adopting him.

Laurel is a beautiful little girl! She came into care when she was about 3 years old, apparently having had little stimulation or training. She was diagnosed with CP, and they began working with her at the orphanage. Laurel has good fine motor skills, and is able to walk without assistance. She is toilet trained (during the day). Her language is a bit behind, although it is difficult to know if that is due to the CP, lack of early education and adult interaction (before she arrived at the orphanage), or just general speech issues. A thorough exam and evaluation when she comes home will be helpful and lead her family in the right direction to help her. Laurel is very sweet, active, and a generally happy little girl! She needs a family!

Landon is an amazing boy who came to a special home for the Blind in December of 2016. Landon had made so much progress with consistent love and care, but then he was recalled to his orphanage. When they took him back to his orphanage, they didn’t even have a bed for him. Staff went back the next day and donated his bed from their care center. They also recently visited him in the orphanage and reported: “It’s clear the staff is doing their best, but is very overwhelmed. In his room there are 9 children with just one nanny caring for them and one toy to share. When we first saw Landon, he was very distant and refused to even say our names. Even with his new nannies, he was much quieter and cold than he usually was … I can only imagine what’s going on in his little mind. I held him in my arms and sang to him and, even though he refused to sing songs that we used to sing together, he seemed calm and happy. We played for a while and when I gave him a piggy back ride, our old Landon came back to us. He was calling out “go” and “faster” in English and was calling our names again, with a big smile on his face. Leaving him hurt, especially because he started asking to go home with us. Landon needs the love and support of a family now more than ever.”

When Landon first arrived at the home, he struggled with transitions and always demanded to be held. However, he was able to work with a wonderful occupational therapist that helped him and he made great improvements. He still loves hugs, to snuggle, and is the biggest fan of piggy back rides! He especially loves singing and enjoys singing English songs like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “BINGO.” He was in an English immersion classroom and has a strong foundation in English to express himself. Thanks to having American volunteers providing an English immersion environment, he can say the days of the week, say left or right, use manners, and express his basic needs in English. His file lists him to have nystagmus and esotropia. Landon is blind. He had been making big improvements in his orientation and mobility classes. He had also been making wonderful progress with his cane. Make sure to watch his videos and see him speak English and use his cane skills! Landon finds music to be very soothing. He loves when you sing to him while holding him in your arms and when you run your hands through his hair. You can feel how much he just wants to be loved!

Kipper is a handsome and outgoing boy who is 9 years old. (Note: his photos from his file have spots on them…these are not skin blemishes) He came to the orphanage when he was about 3 months old. They discovered he had hearing loss, with no other developmental issues. Kipper began “language recovery training” when he was 4 years old. At that time, his left ear was at 90dB, with his right ear having more hearing ability at 75dB. Kip had no language at 4 years old. He attended the language center during the week, then returned to the orphanage each weekend. He received hearing aids in 2010, and was soon able to repeat words and phrases. He is now able to speak in full sentences. Sometimes Kipper’s speech can be hard to understand, but for the most part, he can communicate with others with no problem. Kipper is a very smart boy, who quickly learns new skills. He has a fantastic memory, and can quickly recall passwords he has only seen one time.

Kipper is a very compassionate boy, who looks out for the other kids. One friend at the orphanage is blind. He and Kipper are good friends, and he is able to understand what Kipper says every time. He refers to Kipper as his eyes, since Kipper helps him so much. Kipper is a sweet, active, energetic, and loving boy who wants to have a family of his own. He is inquisitive, polite, and eager to learn. He will be such a great addition to a loving family!

Kevin’s story is so heartbreaking. He was brought to the orphanage when he was 4 years old; scared, lonely, and confused. They decided to give him an IQ/DQ test just a few months after he arrived; he did not score very high (not surprising at all, given the trauma of the past few months!). He appeared to be in good health overall. Kevin came to the U.S. as part of an agency’s host program. At that time, he was active, healthy-looking, and doing well. When he returned to his orphanage, his physical health began to decline. Currently, Kevin is unable to walk any distance at all without falling. He requires help to get up off the floor, or from the toilet. He can only eat soft foods that are easy to chew. There is a strong possibility that Kevin has muscular dystrophy. Throughout it all, Kevin has remained a positive outlook, a loving nature, and a great compassion for others. Kevin is now 8 years old. He is currently in a foster home at the orphanage, and takes care of the younger children there. Kevin needs a family of his own, in an area that can provide him the care and treatments he will need.

Kenny recently turned two years old. When he was about 4 months old, he was left at a safe haven drop spot at the local orphanage. Kenny has a heart defect (patent foramen ovale) but it is reported to be closing on its own and it’s thought that it will not require surgery. He may have bronchopulmonary dysplasia (abnormal development of lung tissue) which affects premature babies, who are born with underdeveloped lungs. [According to the internet, many babies diagnosed with BPD will recover close to normal lung function, but this takes time. Scarred, stiffened lung tissue will always not work as well as it should. But as infants with BPD grow, new healthy lung tissue can form and grow, and might eventually take over much of the work of breathing for damaged lung tissue.] Kenny received treatment for BPD in March, 2014 and now his condition is improved, with decreased incidents of shortness of breath.

Recently, the orphanage’s physical therapy team has been working on the right side of his body, which seems a little weaker than the left. He is not able to hold things in his right hand. Kenny’s mental development is age appropriate. His physical development is good – he can crawl, sit, and walk holding on. Kenny is very attached to his nannies and loves to play with the 10 children in his room. Can Kenny be the son you’ve been searching for?

Keegan is a handsome, and active boy who is 5 years old. He came into care when he was 2 years old, unable to walk or talk. He soon began walking, but his speech was limited to “yiyi yaya”. By the time he turned 4 years old, he was talking, but adults were not able to understand what he said. Keegan has strabismus (crossed eyes), and has difficulty seeing things up close. He needs an eye exam, and possibly glasses to correct the strabismus and any vision issue. A CT scan showed possible mild hydrocephalus, which has not required any treatment at this time. Keegan is very friendly, active, and an easy going little boy. He gets along well with other kids and really loves to play outside! Keegan needs a family, correction for his vision issue, and help with his speech. Oh…he would also probably like a bike and a swing set!

VERY URGENT! * blind * beautiful * her health is declining for unknown reasons *

“Meet Kassidy! She is such a beautiful little love. Her health has declined since her last official medical report and she really needs a family. Our team’s PT feels there is a possibility she could improve so much with the love of a family and access to good medical care.”

Report from April 2011:  A pretty great report for a 19 month old, Kassidy is extroverted, active and restless, sometimes she is stubborn. She loves being cuddled by caregivers the most. Since she is smart and lovely, everyone loves her and hopes she could find a family of her own to enjoy a happy and lovely family life facilitating her healthy development. She is smart and is able to crawl, take steps while holding onto handrails, take steps with one hand held, imitate words, and speak 3-5 words. She uses thumbs and index fingers deftly and is able to pick up a pill with her thumbs and index fingers. She is a very cute baby with fair complexion. She is not a picky eater and eats every good we give her, therefore, she has a chubby face. She has a lovely mouth and she often sucks her fingers as if sucking a soother, which is very cute.

Report from November 2016: From an advocate who met Kassidy: “Kassidy did not interact with environment or caregiver to determine personality. Maintained fetal position sleeping. Did move her face and arms in response to cold washcloth on face. We observed no noises. She has low muscle tone, hyporeflexia. No contractures noted. Can’t stand or walk. Appears to be failure to thrive. She overall demonstrates severe delays in all domains. She appears to have declined in general health per report of previous function.”

Journey is a beautiful little girl with a warm smile! Journey is not a picky eater and can feed herself, but won’t necessarily eat as much as she should so she does get some help to make sure she is eating enough to fill her up. She really likes milk and fruits. Journey can walk stably and can go up and down stairs using the handrail. She is said to be calm and cautious. Sometimes if she thinks the stairs, for example, are dangerous she will sit on the stairs and move down with her hands and feet. Journey’s favorite toys are toy dogs and the red plasma car. Because she doesn’t speak much, Journey has trouble expressing her needs and does need some assistance with toileting.

She communicates with her gorgeous eyes and through gestures and actions. When people greet her, Journey smiles happily. Journey is an affectionate little girl. For a period of time, she would go down one set of stairs to the office on the second floor when the caretaker was not looking. She would appear suddenly behind one of the workers there and pat the worker. That worker would sometimes then go visit her activity room and Journey would come forward immediately and hug the worker tightly. Her hugs are said to be so tight they are like bear hugs. We can’t wait to see what lucky family is going to be blessed to not only have this little girl in their home and family, but to see those smiles and receive those bear hugs every day!
