When she first arrived at her orphanage, she was small and weak. Intrigued by her surroundings she would observe the nannies and other children playing, smiling when teased or tickled. She still loves to be tickled, held, and kissed, loves colorful toys that make sounds and likes to listen and dance to music.

Lissa will make eye contact and is said to be very cheerful! She is attentive when learning something new and will actively try to learn new things. Diagnosed with Down Syndrome and nystagmus of both eyes, compared to her peers her growth and development have been delayed; however, with rehabilitation training she is able to crawl, sit independently, grasp objects, and is making good progress as she continues to grow and develop. The origin of Lissa’s name, given to her by her caretakers, means ‘hope she will obtain love and be cherished.’ This little one, so clearly adored, is waiting for a family to find her who will love and cherish her delightful and adventurous little spirit! Her file is extremely detailed with a lot of wonderful developmental information and benchmarks, and we are also able to connect interested families with individuals who have visited her orphanage and were able to meet her during their visit in November 2016!

This playful, adventurous, sweet boy is Liam! He is 8 years old and will absolutely steal your heart. Liam can be quiet and introverted at times, but he is generally a very friendly kid! Whenever volunteers come to the orphanage he cannot wait to take pictures with them. He seems to have an eye for photography – he loves being in pictures and taking pictures of others. He especially likes to come up with funny poses! He can play games cooperatively with other kids, and he has a lot of fun building all kinds of structures out of blocks. Liam likes to be creative and has quite the imagination!

Liam had the opportunity to visit the US as part of the Winter 2016 China Hosting Program! He spent 3 weeks playing, learning, and laughing with his host family. Here is what they shared with us:

“Liam is a very happy little guy with the most contagious giggles you’ll ever hear, and I have no doubt that he’ll bring much joy to his forever family. He is a very energetic and active little guy who enjoys playing outside (at the playground, swinging and going down the slide are favorite activities), but he also is great at entertaining himself indoors by looking at books or “writing” (making marks on paper). He has a great imagination and especially loves to pretend to cook! He plays well with others but just as often seems to enjoy playing independently.

Liam also has a bit of a mischievous streak — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but he does sometimes need help redirecting some of his energy to a more positive activity. I did see improvement throughout his time here with his ability to be redirected, and discipline-wise, short “time-ins” where we sat together quietly on the floor seemed to be most effective.

Liam LOVES to eat…And would eat ALL the time if I let him. He is not picky at all; he’s eaten everything I’ve given him — fruit, veggies, yogurt, meat, pasta, etc. The hardest thing for him is being done with a meal/snack — even if he has had plenty to eat, he still wants more. This does seem to be getting a bit better, though.

It was fun having Liam here & seeing him come out of his shell! He definitely keeps me on my toes because he is very active/into everything, but he has a great imagination that has been fun to watch. He also really has done a GREAT job transitioning into family life/life in the US.”

You can see more photos and videos from Liam’s time in the US on his advocacy page. Liam’s nannies tell us he is learning self-care skills. His recent health has been good, and he is not currently showing any symptoms of heart disease.

Sept 2015 Update: Leon seems like a bright boy and from our short time visiting him he integrated well and seemed content. He was very smiley! A family wanting to adopt a child with Down syndrome would be very blessed by Leon.

January 2016 update: Leon is nearly ready to walk by himself! He loves to move around either by crawling or when holding onto something for support or someone’s hand he can walk. He tried taking a few steps unaided but his balance wasn’t quite there yet. He looks for things hidden such as when I put my phone under my leg he searched around for it. He is very eager to engage and play with those around him.

Leon is a cute boy who loves to get around. He crawls all over the place and will stand up and walk when holding onto something or someone! Most of all, he enjoys his independence when in the baby walker. While he feeds well from a bottle, he has not yet transitioned to solid food. Leon communicates with sounds and gestures but is not yet saying words. He is very interactive with others and smiles when he sees loved ones. He loves to reach out and be with other children as well as his caregivers. He is especially fond of hugs and watching TV.

A specific adoption agency is offering a $1500 grant towards Leon’s adoption!

She likes playing with colorful toys, dolls, and with other children. When she listens to music, she will shake her body to dance. When she was called by her caretaker, she could turn her head to find the sound source. Leigha smiles when people amuse her and she can understand her caretaker. She has a good personality overall, but is sometimes obstinate. Leigha is introverted, shy, and cries easily, but is as cute as can be. She has a good diet and is said to be a steady sleeper. Lee is extremely intelligent. He currently attends class in the little brothers and sisters class. In class, he is learning art and dance. Lee likes to watch cartoons. He will laugh while captively watching them. If you play with him and poke his tummy with your fingers, he will grab his shirt and pull it up; he will then quickly pull it back down to cover his tummy, not letting you see it. His eyes will look slyly at you and then he will secretly laugh. Lee is very intelligent. Even though he is unable to clearly express his own thoughts verbally for the time being, his body language abilities are extremely strong. He can use his hands to signal to you “Greetings”, “Thank you” and other types of movements. Lee is really adorable and intelligent. He is an extremely charming little boy. Help us find Lee’s forever family!

Beautiful Leia! This sweet little lady has grown and developed well over the years. Leia is a friendly girl, eagerly greeting those she knows. She does have some wariness among strangers, though. She has good self-care skills, including feeding herself and washing her hands. She helps with simple chores, and also speaks in sentences. Her favorite thing to do is draw. Staff reports that she has a great capacity to learn. At her facility, Leia receives therapy for language and motor skills twice daily.

UPDATE: April 2016 Leia is a pretty girl who was very eager to come play when our staff visited in April 2016; she hovered nearby while they talked with other children trying to patiently wait her turn! She is diagnosed with Down syndrome, and they learned from staff that she had surgery for a heart murmur in 2014. They observed nystagmus but the caregivers report it doesn’t seem to affect her vision in daily life. She also has some facial paralysis on her left side, but this was already the case when she came to the orphanage so they don’t know the cause. She was very focused when playing with the toys, and quickly figured out the stacking cups. She did fairly well on the shape sorter, though sometimes she had to try a few times to find the right match. She needed to be looking directly at the lid with the shape holes (straight on) in order to use it. She receives lessons at the orphanage, and is able to point to some colors when asked, but can’t yet count. She tries to put words together in sentences, though her speech isn’t clear. She gets along well with other kids, and loves to hold the babies!

Larsen is a cutie pie, born with down syndrome in July of 2014. Larsen was put into a foster family in December of 2015. He is a good sleeper and has a good appetite and is not a picky eater. He has a pretty good understand of what people are saying to him, but is still only making sounds to communicate with people. He also uses his actions and facial expressions to express himself. He is good at following simple directions. When Larsen sees his foster mother making delicious food, he gets very happy- even his eyes smile, as he makes ‘mmm’ sounds when eating.

Larsen can walk, run, and jump. He can open doors and get things out of reach by moving a chair and climbing up on the chair. He will shake his bottom and dance when he’s happy. Larsen’s hands and feet are flexible. He has good fine motor skills. He likes to clean up messes, imitate pictures he sees on his foster dad’s cell phone, and imitate people walking backwards. Larsen enjoys playing hide-and-seek with his foster sister. When an older neighbor lady visits the family, Larsen will wave his hands happily to greet her. A little brother recently joined the foster family and Larsen will go to the end of the bed to see him every day. Larsen will push the little brother’s stroller and play with him. Larsen likes playing games with his foster sister, playing outdoors in the park, and playing with water. He will sometimes play in the water with his sister in the bathroom when his foster mom is busy or not paying attention. Larsen sounds like a typical little boy who is going to thrive in a forever family! We hope his family sees him soon!

There is a $2,500 agency grant for Larsen’s adoption with a specific adoption agency. Larsen needs a family with an approved home study to be able to hold his file or move forward with adopting him.
