Reece’s Rainbow is dedicated to rescuing orphans abroad with Down syndrome. The ugly truth of the matter is that once these children reach a certain age, especially growing up in institutional/orphanage settings, they get to a point where they are no longer likely to be adopted.

Melody is a little peanut who couldn’t be cuter! Melody knows the nanny who takes care of her and is very close to her. She is described as smiley, shy, and energetic. She recognizes the other children in her room and enjoys playing with them. Melody feeds herself with a bottle and likes to eat crackers too. She is afraid of strangers, but will actively ask for hugs from the nanny who cares for her. Being held is one of her very favorite things! Melody will let her nanny know she is not happy if the nanny holds another child first or is too busy to hold her. Melody reacts when called and can understand simple instructions. She is now saying some single words and will say a sentence every once in a while, but it is hard to understand. She is finally walking and appears very small for her age.

Agency staff have met her multiple times and note that she is sweet, has a precious laugh, doesn’t cry much, is often happy, and is a good sleeper. One of our traveling families even had the blessing of meeting her last year. Melody will surely bring so much joy to her forever family!

Journey is a beautiful little girl with a warm smile! Journey is not a picky eater and can feed herself, but won’t necessarily eat as much as she should so she does get some help to make sure she is eating enough to fill her up. She really likes milk and fruits. Journey can walk stably and can go up and down stairs using the handrail. She is said to be calm and cautious. Sometimes if she thinks the stairs, for example, are dangerous she will sit on the stairs and move down with her hands and feet. Journey’s favorite toys are toy dogs and the red plasma car. Because she doesn’t speak much, Journey has trouble expressing her needs and does need some assistance with toileting. She communicates with her gorgeous eyes and through gestures and actions. When people greet her, Journey smiles happily. Journey is an affectionate little girl. For a period of time, she would go down one set of stairs to the office on the second floor when the caretaker was not looking. She would appear suddenly behind one of the workers there and pat the worker. That worker would sometimes then go visit her activity room and Journey would come forward immediately and hug the worker tightly. Her hugs are said to be so tight they are like bear hugs. We can’t wait to see what lucky family is going to be blessed to not only have this little girl in their home and family, but to see those smiles and receive those bear hugs every day!

Journey has a $1,500 agency grant for her adoption with the agency who currently holds her file. Other grants may be available based on the adoptive family’s circumstances. Agency grants are awarded as agency fee reductions.

The nannies say she eats a normal amount, so they are not sure why she’s so thin. When agency staff visited in April 2016, she sat up very stably and was alert, frequently nodding her head and rocking. Caregivers say she doesn’t often reach for toys, but she will react when the nannies make faces or tickle her. She can stand up with support from her nanny under her hands. In the baby walker she can move around very quickly! She will scoot around on her bottom as well to get around, but doesn’t crawl yet. So far she’s not babbling, just making sounds. She does turn to sounds as well.

When Meghan first entered her institute she had poor physique and digestion but under the nannies care she gradually improved. When she was 4 years old she was receiving some education, motor and language training. She crawled quickly and could stand and walk with support. She was extroverted and smiled a lot. She liked to play with friends, understood simple instructions, knew the names of body parts, could call “mom” and waved her hands to express “good-bye.”

In May 2018 it was reported that she could walk and run on her own. She used a spoon to feed herself, could follow simple instructions and could play with toys alone. Her intelligence was said to be delayed and although she couldn’t yet speak in full sentences she could say simple words like, “thank you” and understood other people.

2019 UPDATE: Meghan is said to be an active and cute girl who likes posing for pictures! She enjoys going out to play and interacting with other children. She can kick and bounce a ball, walk freely, feed and dress herself, dance, sing, and string beads. She understands her teacher’s instructions and imitates well.  Additional photos and video available.

Sofia is an adorable little girl! One month after surgery to repair Sofia’s heart, it was discovered that her trachea had been injured while she was intubated during surgery. At that time, she underwent a tracheotomy and had a trach in place for three years, which was recently removed. Sofia’s unfortunate complication that occurred during her heart surgery led her to live in a rather fortunate situation. Because of her trach, her orphanage life has been lived in the orphanage hospital with a wonderful nanny who has raised her like a daughter.

Sofia is a smiley, outgoing, and confident child. She can dress herself, brush her teeth, and she is potty trained. She says simple words like mama, baba, ayi and jiejie. Sofia imitates others and copies hand movements, as you can see in her video when she is outside with the social worker. Sofia likes to play with others, listen to music, and play with all kinds of toys, but especially those that play music. She is interested in new things and playing games. She likes watching singing and dancing programs and she will shake her body with the music. She has a strong desire to perform. Sofia is closely attached to her caretaker and she enjoys cuddling and kissing her. She is helpful and kind to everyone, including visitors who she will move chairs for, say bye bye to, and blow kisses at. Sofia is just waiting for her turn to be part of a forever family and we are hoping that day will come soon!

Emery is well adapted to her daily routine in the orphanage. She eats three meals a day but doesn’t have a big appetite and doesn’t care for snacks or desserts. The orphanage staff make efforts to enrich her days to help her development by watching TV, listening to music, playing with toys and taking her out for outdoor activities.

Her motion development is slightly delayed compared to other children but staff feel this is due to her being in orphanage life and not with a family. They say her opportunities are more limited there although she does participate in rehabilitation training in the institute. At the time of her report she was 3.5 years old and could sit independently, hold toys to play and walk holding the wall. She was described as being extroverted, well liked and having a ready smile. Emory could take off her socks and pants and was in good physical condition, but wasn’t yet speaking. Orphanage staff hope she will be adopted by a family who can educate her and help her grow up to be a happy girl.

This is Chloris!  Chloris came to the orphanage when she was just a few months old. They found she has Down syndrome, with no known heart or other health issues. Chloris lives with a foster family, and gets along very well with her foster siblings. Her development has been delayed, as is typical for a child with Down syndrome. Chloris has some speech delays which will likely require some speech therapy. She is bright, happy, engaging, and very social! Her foster family has helped her in her development so much! Chloris enjoys playing with her foster sisters…a family for Chloris with built in playmates would be wonderful!

Everyone LOVES Jolie!!!! She is two and a half, and she is outgoing and full of life and love.  What a little sweetie! At 15 months old, she could raise her head if lying on the abdomen, could crawl and turn over, could sit alone freely, could grasp toys near her, could take blocks out the cup, could bang toy blocks together, could visually follow moving toys, could search for the sound source and could search for dropped things. She is outgoing, active and restless, likes music, would wave her head along the rhythm, fond of playing toys, would crawl to seek for toys to play, get along well with other children, play well with other children, seldom cry, when she cries occasionally she will be fine when cuddled.
