Cambria smiling March 2014Girl, born January 2005

Anophthalmos (absence of eyes)

Listed: August 13, 2012

What a sweet little girl!  She is walking independently. Married couples only, large families welcome!

Update June 2013:
Don’t let Cambria’s pictures fool you. She is happy and full of life. Usually, she is stuck in bed for her own safety, as the nannies are afraid she could fall or run into something and hurt herself. When I took her out, she was able to walk, run, and dance to the music playing on the TV in the room. She loves dancing! She started laughing when I clapped my hands in front of her face and when I sneezed. She is an absolutely angelic little girl. While I do believe she has some institutional autism, she would be a joy in any family, and with love and proper care will thrive.

Update March 2014:
Although she mostly lays around because she cannot see, she walks and dances; she loves music. She is extremely gentle, and sensitive to noises.  She loves to be swung around and rocked gently, and that also makes her giggle.

Kanani has been transferred!

NEW PHOTO DECEMBER 2016

Lovely Kanani needs a family to help her reach her full potential.

From a family who met her in May 2012:  Large families welcome; travel required.Kanani is very sweet girl. She is well cared for in a good orphanage by caring nannies. She gets lots of outside time when it’s warm out but this time is spent lying down in the stroller as she can’t sit on her own. She can hold on to your fingers and seems to just love to have attention although with her eye troubles it is difficult for her to respond. She likes to have her cheek stroked and her hand held. She is quite stiff and in need of physiotherapy and most of all love and attention. We were told that she will be transferred to an institution very soon unless a family is found as children at this orphanage are typically transferred at age 4.

Update March 2014:
Very sweet and energetic little girl, eager to play and interact. She definitely has cognitive delays, and does not speak but functions within the preschool type setting classroom of her groupa. She communicates by pointing and making sounds. She appears to have something like hemiplegia CP affecting the right side of her body, causing a big of a drag in her leg as she walks, and causing her arm to be stiff on that side as well. She’s a happy little girl and very cute.

From a family who met him in 2015: “Zeke is seriously one smart cookie!! He is walking GREAT now and was even jumping from a play mattress to join in the fun. He actually knows a few words in English as well, and I taught him to fist bump (and blow it up, ha ha) when I came in and he remembered it when I left and hour and a half later. I was blown away by his attention to detail in the books we were reading — he will excel academically. He was very attached to the American volunteer who is regularly in his groupa — all of the kids love her and are lucky to have her attention.”

From a family who met him in Summer 2015:
He appears to be of normal size for his age.  He He can focus for pretty significant amounts of time if the activity interests him. We are now able to sit and flip through entire books together, taking time to figure out what is going on from the pictures on each page. He has become very good at identifying the characters’ emotions from their facial expressions and makes reasonable guesses as to why they feel how they do.

He is pretty stable when sitting. He’s not falling out of chairs or off of benches or anything. Sure, he falls sometimes when he runs, but the kid is running! He has been walking and running for a few years now; the boy dances!

He might be slightly cognitively delayed for his age, but he is a very quick learner and strikes me as very intelligent. We have as normal of conversations as I imagine are possible with a 6 year old. He has impressed me recently with some clever remarks that are evidence of him thinking quickly and independently, rather than just just parroting what his caretakers say. His emotional control has improved vastly. He just needs a calm presence when frustrated. For example, we were working with buttons the other day, and when he started getting frustrated and saying he couldn’t do it, I just calmly told him that it’s hard, that he’s really close, and that he’s totally capable, and he was able to complete the task.

Although he does still enjoy some solitary games, he’s becoming a lot more social. He always takes me around the yard to introduce me to people and knows everyone by name.  He’s a pretty calm, happy guy, especially when there are calm, warm adults to help him get over little obstacles.

December 2014 UPDATE:   A U.S. mom had these observations about Zeke: He’s a doll! He’s cheerful, helpful, and very friendly. Every time we entered the room he was the first to greet us (Labas!!). Zeke has a little issue with following directions. I don’t know him well enough to be able to distinguish if it was a willful issue or a cognitive issue. As far as I know he has FAS and possibly very mild CP effecting his legs/ Achilles’ tendon. Zeke is a very likable kiddo!

Update from a volunteer who spent extensive time with him:
I met Zeke in the summer of 2010 while volunteering; in the years that I’ve known him, Zeke has made considerable physical, cognitive and emotional progress, and has become an active, curious, quirky, good-natured, and nurturing young boy. As his physical abilities have improved, he has become much more independent, both dressing and feeding himself. He does, however, need some direction and encouragement with these endeavors. Zeke best completes such tasks when given positive reinforcement and clear sequence of events to follow. For example, if simply given a pile of clothes, he often has trouble focusing his attention. It is more effective to ask him what he needs to do first, second, and third, and to tell him how quick/good he is when he has completed a step in the sequence. If he is feeling unmotivated, it can be helpful to tap into his nurturing side (ex. “Put your socks on! Your feet will get cold and wonder why you didn’t dress them!”) or to incentivize him with tickling—his favorite activity in the world.

In the past year, Zeke has become an avid performer, bravely singing in dancing during musical lessons and performances in the children’s home. Even half a year ago, he would need a bit of coaxing to get up and join the other children in song. During this year’s holiday show, however, when the music teacher asked for volunteers to stand up and perform, Zeke was the first to rise to the challenge. He also really enjoys musical children’s films, often performing the routines from memory during playtime. One of his favorite toys is a little piano with a microphone into which he sings his favorite songs.

Zeke has a few other favorite games, which mostly revolve around caretaking and repetition. For instance, following the examples of the caretakers, he feeds, bathes and swaddles dolls, making sure to lovingly and carefully execute these tasks in the correct order each time; when waiting for the thermometer to show the doll’s temperature, he pets her head, rocking her back and forth. Another current favorite of his is petting me and telling me not to cry in a concerned, soft voice. After establishing that he has comforted me, he gets in his toy car, wishes me all the best, drives around the room, and comes back to take care of me again. Zeke has also grown to love animals, and when given the chance to be with a dog or horse, he always pets them, sweetly telling the animals that they are good and that he loves them.

Zeke is an incredibly nurturing, loving child, and delights in physical affection. He loves to be petted and hugged, and gladly returns the favor. He is very concerned with maintaining good relationships with the adults in his life and is sensitive to admonition. If he is beyond the point of being motivated by positive reinforcement, a serious look and stern voice usually suffice. If he sees that he has accidentally hurt me, he becomes quiet and sad, and seeks reassurance that everything is ok. Zeke is less sensitive with respect to the children around him, as he is possessive of his favorite toys and the other children habitually seek what another has. In the last few months, however, Zeke has made a great deal of progress expressing his emotions and restraining himself when he gets upset. Whereas he would previously go after the child to repossess his toy, I have consistently responded by wrapping an arm around him, telling him that we will all gladly help him if he calmly explains to us what is wrong, and he is now much better at seeking our help and articulating his feelings. When he is agitated, it’s best to take a calm, light-hearted approach to ease the tension; he thinks it’s hilarious when adults copy his little squeals and shenanigans, so he usually laughs if I playfully copy his whining, which gets him out of his rut and allows us to calmly seek a solution.

All in all, Zeke is a joyful, enthusiastic, loving child who responds to physical affection, positive reinforcement, and clearly established expectations. He has a friendly attitude towards new people, and seeks a great deal of hugs from the adults in his life. I have the utmost confidence that with patient, gentle and loving guidance, Zeke will continue to grow into a capable, kind young man who will enrich the lives of those around him. In the five years that I’ve spent with Zeke, he has certainly filled my life with more love than I could have possibly imagined.

Eric has arthrogryposis and compensated hydrocephalus. He has had a surgical repair of spina bifada.

Listed: Jan 2012

Eric is a smiley little fellow who likes to feel his caretaker’s heartbeat or pulse, because it comforts him. He would be a wonderful little brother in a household of older children.

Overall, he is healthy and would do well in a family without smaller children. His upper body is quite strong and he has full use of his hands, fingers and arms, but he has little control or movement in his lower limbs and they are significantly smaller than his upper body. He can squeeze very tightly with his hands, and reach a full arm’s length with no problems even though his resting position is the one you see in the pictures. He does not talk, according to the caretakers but does make sounds to communicate. Cognitively, he has significant delays due to his history of spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He is very much still an infant in many ways.

He may have a sister a few years older in a different region who possibly could also be available for adoption or he could be adopted separately. She also has special needs.

From a family who met him in 2011:

Sweet Francis needs a family.  He does not currently sit up, but I think he probably could if he were given an opportunity to be out of his chair and get stronger.  Overall, Francis seems to be physically healthy, aside from his CP.  I suspect his cerebral palsy affects his upper and lower body.  He is very tight.  More concerning is his emotional well being.  Francis does not get much mental stimulation or interaction, outside of his immediate basic needs.  The caregivers are kind and do love him, but are unsure what to do with him.  He gets good basic care.  He is fed and is clean.  He is not left in a crib.  He sits in his orange chair all day long.  I tried to talk to Francis and touch him.  He is very uncomfortable with touch, but he has the sweetest blue eyes and I know that the right family could draw this little boy out of his shell.  Please someone, take a chance on Francis.  He will thrive with the proper care and stimulation.

-Josiah-

From someone who works with him:  We have had the privilege of caring for Josiah for 3 years. He is the oldest child in our care and has been with us longer than any other child. Josiah was abandoned at a nearby hospital when he was 1. Josiah has cerebral palsy and requires special care and attention. He has limited control over his movement and needs support when sitting. For 3 years, our nannies and staff have cared for Josiah, fed him and bathed him. Ask any person who has cared for Josiah though and they will say that they are the one who was blessed.

When you are with Josiah, it is clear that God’s love resides in Josiah. Josiah can’t talk, but he loves to smile and interact with anyone who will talk to him. Josiah cannot sing like most of us, but each day during nanny prayer and singing Josiah joins in with a big smile. Our deep desire is for Josiah to join his forever family through adoption. We have had difficulty finding that family, but we know that God has a plan for Josiah . We also know that where ever he goes, Josiah will be a blessing as his loved ones bless and care for him.

Update Jan 2015:  Josiah has been with us longer than any other child and is waiting for his forever family. He was abandoned at a nearby hospital when he was a year old. Josiah has cerebral palsy. He can be very interactive and seems to comprehend what is being said to him. He does have seizures that are being controlled with medication. He loves when people sing songs with him. Josiah is a very happy and loving boy. He is always full of smiles.

Josiah can hold his head up, and is practicing learning how to sit, although he has not yet mastered this skill on his own. He prefers the tripod position while someone supports his efforts. Josiah is very strong and his muscles are often tight; he is receiving therapy to help him relax and control his muscles better. Josiah is nonverbal, but can still express several of his needs very well; he will cry if he wants attention and will happily reward you with a smile when you talk with or sing to him.  Our deep desire is for Josiah to join his forever family through adoption. We have had difficulty finding that family, but we know that God has a plan for Josiah . We also know that where ever he goes, Josiah will be a blessing as his loved ones bless and care for him.

-Peter-Boy, born December 2007

Cerebral palsy, sickle cell anemia, kerion

Photos available.

From someone who works with him:
Resiliency only begins to describe Peter! This young boy has gone through so much medically, yet still finds the strength to smile through it all. No matter what, rubbing his head will produce a sweet smile of pure contentment and a look of peace in his eyes! Peter certainly has faced more than his share of medical challenges these past months. For quite some time, he was experiencing both scalp and skin issues that were resistant to seemingly all conventional treatments. After a long course of steroids and special mixtures of creams, Peter has finally experienced some relief and his skin is in the process of healing. While he has a history of seizures and is positive for sickle cell, both of those conditions are wonderfully under control with daily medications. Peter enjoys receiving special care and attention and really responds well to being able to attach to certain people he can trust.

Update Jan 2015:  Peter has lived with us for the past several years. He has cerebral palsy and sickle cell anemia. He cannot sit independently, but he can hold his head up in his chair or during tummy time. He has a skin condition called, “kerion,” but this is usually fairly well controlled with special creams and shampoos. He has frequent muscle spasms and is on medication for seizures. In the past several months, we have seen Peter learn to express himself more, and are seeing more of his adorable smile! Peter recently had a g-tube placed and is now getting fed through this. He can also eat soft foods by mouth and these are offered to him regularly. Peter enjoys receiving special care and attention and really responds well to being able to attach to certain people he can trust. His favorite nanny tells us that he calls her, “grandma”.

Update Feb 2018: “Peter” is so alert and aware of everything going on around him. He is great at visual tracking and watches everyone carefully. He’s also starting to use eye gaze to communicate between choices and his new special education teacher has learned through this method that he knows his letters and numbers. He can’t control his movements well but can sometimes communicate on the yes/no board using eye gaze. Even though he is one of the oldest boys in the house, he still enjoys some cuddle time and will really relax if we hold him in the right position.

NEW PIC JUNE 2016!   FAS,  cleft hard and soft palate.   She has many facial features of fetal alcohol syndrome, please research this condition as a preparation for her needs.  There are several children in this orphanage who could be adopted together!

From an adoptive family who visited with her in Jan 2012:  We saw Harriet today. She has the thickest, dark curly hair and beautiful eyes! She snuck out of the groupa room to come see us. I got to hold her for just a moment. She’s really tiny. Working on pictures.

Brody (on the left) born April 2006-FAS

Auggie (on the right) born March 2005
Rough mental delay, partial atrophy of eye nerves, cerebral palsy, Epilepsy-FAS

Listed: May 6, 2011
From someone who met Brody in 2011 and Auggie in 2012:  Brody and Auggie are sweet little boys who appear to have some sort of genetic disorder that causes developmental delays and self-harming behaviors. They are not aggressive towards others, only towards themselves, and these behaviors can be halted temporarily by picking either boy up and spinning him around. Brody is able to walk, and can drink from a cup without help. He is not quite able to feed himself, but is willing to try. Auggie was in a laying room for over a year, but after only 3 months of physical therapy is now sitting independently and working on learning to stand. Both boys have wonderful, heart stealing smiles. Brody appears to be in his own world much of the time, and loves things that crinkle or light up, and things shaped like sticks, as well as hands, gloves, feet and socks. He shows numerous signs of autism, which may or may not be environmental. Auggie loves things that crinkle or light up, slinkies, music, and tv. He is more interactive than Brody, and appears to lift his arms up to indicate he would like to be held. This is the only form of communication I observed from either of the boys. The boys are currently living in separate orphanages. I pray a family will reunite these brothers together in one family, where they can receive all the love and attention they need to meet their full potential!

We hope a family will consider adopting them TOGETHER.

Russ’s profile says “goloproentsephaliy” which is unclear, other than there’s some condition with his brain.  It’s unclear if it’s a physical or mental condition.

It has been suggested that his ‘goloproentsephaliy’ may actually be holoprosencephaly like Catherine 9HA, but it would be a milder form than hers i.e. lobar or semi-lobar holoprosencephaly, rather than alobar.

Travis2Boy, born November 2006

Travis is listed as having congenital defects of the Central Nervous System (CNS).  We don’t have additional information yet on how that affects him overall.

Listed May 2011

From a family who met him in 2012:
When I saw Travis my heart completely broke.  I remembered his picture where he was sitting up, and it was obvious that in the time since that picture was taken his health and any ability he once had had deteriorated.  He laid nearly lifeless, covered with blankets (mind you it is very hot in the room).  I only have the one picture of him  because his position never changed.  He rarely moved and seemed to be asleep all the time.  The only time I ever saw him move he just rocking his head from side to side very slowly as he grinded his teeth…and grinded…and grinded.  My instant feeling was that Travis had given up on life, and it breaks my heart.

Every time I saw him there was vomit on the blanket next to his mouth.  I suspect it is due to improper feeding.  Like Janna, Travis is living at the orphanage on borrowed time.

Please friends, let’s not let Travis give up on life.  I don’t know what his future ability would be in a family but even if it never changed isn’t he deserving of the love of a family?  Please…someone…rescue Travis.

Update March 2014:     He is not doing well. He appeared very drugged. He just rocked his head back and forth and ground his teeth. He occasionally would moan and he was salivating a lot and drooling on himself. He did not respond to me when I approached at all, he just kept rocking his head back and forth…which is why the picture is a little blurry…he never stopped.

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!  ALICIA HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED.

SO THANKFUL FOR A NEW PIC OF ALICIA!!   Miss Alicia is a beautiful little girl who needs a loving family.  Her other two typically developing sisters were adopted by other families already.

Listed: August 7, 2010
Alicia was born to an HIV+ mother, and is HIV+ herself.  She has also has significant delays and challenges associated with her FAS.  (fetal alcohol syndrome).  We are waiting to learn if she has any medical complications, but she is cognitively delayed and does show signs of attention deficit and hyperactivity.    Alicia will do best where she can be the focus of attention and have her Daddy wrapped around her finger 🙂    Alicia has SO much potential, and deserves a family as much as her other sisters do.   I know there is a family out there for this little girl!  She is facing the mental institution soon, but has grown up in a loving and well kept orphanage so far.  A committed family now can prevent her transfer!

From an adoptive family who visited with her in July 2010:  ” Alicia absolutely LOVES one on one attention. she is front and center if you are handing out kisses and hugs. You can see she wants a Mama all her own, and it will be so hard on her to have her sister leave to be adopted, as her other sister was already adopted.   (Their mother is deceased, most likely from AIDS).   She likes to swing.   She loved to lay her head in my lap while we were both on the bench swing and I would stroke her hair. The other kids didnt like to share my attention but Alicia was ok with it.   I could have two in my lap and she didn’t mind, but she didnt like being crowded out when the other child decided they wanted me all to themselves.  She likes sensory input.   She kept rubbing her arm across my husband’s unshaved face and shivering and making the funniest face and then immediately doing it again.  She likes to go down the slide again and again.   She really likes to be in the  middle of whatever is going on, and be included. But often she is excluded, even by attendants.  For Alicia it’s a vicious circle. She is delayed, she gets frustrated, they don’t let her do things the others are doing, she gets more delayed and more frustrated. She is VERY VERY SWEET AND LOVING.  She needs a family that has only a couple kids, not ten. She has HIV.   If you want a little girl to hug and kiss, she will GLADLY take all the hugs and kisses you can hand out. She isn’t afraid of men but isn’t inappropriate either. I saw her with my husband as well as another couple of young men who visit regularly.  Alicia is on the small side, like maybe size 4.  The children are valued and loved at this orphanage.   The grounds are visually stimulating and the kids get outside for a couple hours in the morning as well as afternoon.   They even go swimming in the pool they have there.   Hope someone will come for Alicia very soon!”   Alicia is toilet-trained and able to say when she needs to use the restroom.  She has tremendous potential if someone would take her home and love her!

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.

From a volunteer who visited with her in August 2016:  Irina’s update from last year is still very accurate. Her introvert and shy behaviors got more though. She prefers not to interact at all. She still loves to sit on someones lap. She has grown even more than last year. This year she had become too heavy for me to carry her.

I think Irina wants to get out of the facility. She was transferred to this facility a couple years ago. Before she lived here, she lived in a ‘normal orphanage’ with a special needs group. When they lost their funding she was transferred here. When we take her for a walk she walks to the gate and she just stares at the world outside of those gates. She realizes there is an entire world out there. One day the nurses saw us at the gate though and they yelled at us for minutes. We were not allowed to take Irina there, she could walk away. The gate is closed and locked and we were there with her, so there was no way she’d walk away, but from that day on Irina was even more closed and she lost most of the initiative while walking. She even lost her interest in the swing. She needs someone she can trust, someone who she’ll know will stay and will love her. She has already been listed for so long! She needs a family!

From a volunteer who visited with her in July 2015:  ” Irina is a beautiful girl with dark hair and big dark eyes. She has a cleft palate. She is a precious and happy little girl. She loves personal attention. She is craving attention and physical touch. If it was up to her she’d be held and hugged all day. She can react really shy to people who talk to her and especially when yelled at, she will become really introvert. She is a really sweet girl. Irina is a physically quite healthy girl. She is well nourished, she can walk, run, swing, etc. Her physical development is good, compared with the other children in the same facility. She seems to have a strong body. She knows how to use a swing properly and can swing by herself. She enjoys it a lot. She can play accurate with toys, like dolls, or pretend play with kitchen tools. She knows how to walk stairs. She can dress and undress herself. She can drink from a cup and eat by herself. She is potty trained and will tell if she has to use the bathroom. She doesn’t talk, most likely because of her cleft palate. She doesn’t make noises, but her eyes express a lot about how she feels. And her smile will tell you when she enjoys something. She understands what is being said to her and she can follow orders. When Irina is in the group, she’ll try to stay away from the others. She prefers to play by herself, but she is also capable of interacting with other children or adults. She prefers to play with children who are smaller or younger than her, probably because they are no threat to her. Last year I saw how she was being bullied by other (bigger) children. She tries to flee from bullies (and from yelling), but there is nowhere to go. This year she is doing much better. She has grown physically, which made her less of a target for the bigger children. Maybe also because new smaller children are in the group now. Sometimes she’s still the target of bullying and harming behaviour, but at other moments she will show these behaviours herself. She can be a bully to the smaller children herself. I think this is her way of showing that she is stronger now, but this is no good development. The longer children are in this facility, the more harming behaviour they show. Irina is still able to receive love, but time is ticking away. She needs a family. She would thrive in a family where she could be ‘the baby’.”

Irina has been transferred to the older child internat now.   Elinor, Devora, Julia,  Sullivan, Artemur, Duane, Abner and Irina may all be in the same region.

Wendy has waited TOO LONG for a family!  She’s already been listed and waiting for 8 years.  She only has until she turns 16 to be adopted.

Would any family take a leap of blind faith to save her?  She will remain bedridden the rest of her short life if not.  A potential adoptive family needs to be prepared for the effects of years of institutionalization.

Wendy is a beautiful girl with sandy blonde hair and blue eyes.   She was born quite premature  (not sure which gestational week, but it is listed as “4th stage”).  She has CP and is completely blind, with congenital cataracts in both eyes, optic sub-atrophy, and microcephaly.

From her medical records:  Microcephaly, tetraparesis, delayed psychomotor development due to perinatal CNS lesions.  Congenital malformations of eye, cataracts, microphthalmia of both eyes.

Girl, Born September 27, 2006

Valery was born with CP and spina bifida.  She has significant strabismus and “progressive hydrocephaly”.  She is not able to walk, and is significantly delayed in all aspects.   But she is still beautiful and deserving and can truly thrive in a loving family, with access to adequate medical care and nutrition.   Valery will remain bedridden for life, and will likely not survive the transfer to the institution.   Won’t someone consider being her “forever family”?
