Simeon and Charlotte

Simeon, Born October 2007
Significantly delayed; Cerebral palsy

Charlotte, born 2002
significantly delayed

Listed February 22, 2011

New pic Jan 2017.

Simeon is a beautiful Roma child with dark hair and big brown eyes.  He is significantly delayed, and diagnosed with cerebral palsy.  We are trying to get more information on his social history.  Simeon is a fraternal twin, whose sister has already been adopted.

Simeon is described as mostly non-verbal, and is not able to walk on his own.  There just seems to be so much potential for him in a family environment.  He is already an outcast because of his darker skin and will be left institutionalized – and likely bedridden — if not adopted.

From a family who visited with him in 2011:  Simeon is barely responsive to stimuli, but I believe that could change if he received regular, loving attention.  I didn’t observe any of the orphanage workers spending much time interacting with him.  There were times that I was able to get him to smile and grip my hand.  After a few days, he was even able to clap!  But most of the time he is staring off in any direction and seems completely unable to control most of his movements.  He was always either lying down or propped up in a sitting position.  I never heard him speak.  I also never heard him cry or fuss. Overall, a very calm child.

Married couples only, larger families and older parents welcome.

Brandi

Girl, Born August 2007
brain malformations, bilateral hearing loss, significant cognitive delays, heart condition strabismus, anemia

NEW PHOTO!!   Brandi is listed with bilateral hearing loss, but can definitely hear, as she will turn around and look for the person calling her name, and does respond to commands given if she chooses (if she doesn’t, she screams/attempts to run/swats at the caregiver). Cognitively, she is very delayed, more like a toddler, in ability to understand what’s going on around her, and in her responses, and appropriateness. She also has strabismus in both eyes, and has both a heart condition and anemia. She does NOT have CP, nor microcephaly. She does have brain malformations, significant developmental delays, and many stimming behaviors that are typical of lower functioning autism. She is completely nonverbal.

Families interested in Brandi should be aware that she appears to have autism, and that it impacts her significantly. She is a “runner” and will bolt and run unless contained or restrained and potential families need to be aware that this is common in autism, and that they will need to take appropriate measures to keep her safe in a home and family. She has a history of aggression when changes occur, such as a move, or unexpected event, which include biting peers and adults, and she struggled for at least a year after her last orphanage change four years ago, but is doing better now. However, as many with autism thrive on routine and predictability, families need to be aware that she may handle a transition poorly, especially at first. She has excellent mobility, and is very typically sized for a normal 7 year old in weight and height, and when she resists, it is challenging for a grown woman to hold her back. She has been in a school for the deaf, however, she knows no sign language nor does she read lips. She is very much in her own world in many ways. She enjoys music and will sometimes clap, but remains disconnected from the group and does not interact with adults (was not seen with peers).

Brandi attempts to smell/lick everything that is handed to her and when she realizes it isn’t food, she is not typically interested. The nannies report that she has an excellent appetite, and that she enjoys eating. She stims by rocking, throwing herself back and forth, sucking all four fingers on her hand, grunting, and moaning/shrieking. She walks with a lurching gallop. She flaps her hands often. A potential family should be aware that she has no awareness of danger, no fear of strangers and is very much like a very young child emotionally and cognitively, but physically is strong and very mobile. She currently takes psychiatric medications to assist in sleep and behavior.

She is a lovely little girl, with beautiful blond hair and clear complexion. She is in a good orphanage where she is well cared for. Families need to research autism, and be comfortable and familiar with caring safely for a child with the issues mentioned above, in order to provide Brandi with a safe, loving home.

Christian has positive reactions towards the adults with whom he is familiar.   Has interest about what surrounds him, though not very big and also not very sustainable.   Makes unarticulated sounds.   He sleeps well, but has difficulties to fall asleep.

Christian attends school and gets good references from his teachers, he is starting to express his opinion – murmurs when tries to answer.   Active and joyful and as most boys – he likes cars and playing with them.  Is able to move up and down the stairs, eats self-dependently, though has self-care difficulties (still working on toileting), likes long walks in fresh air but is able to do them only with holding on one’s hand.  Christian has amazing potential….what a joy to get to watch him grow and thrive in a forever family!  Older parents, large families, and single moms welcome.  Great program!

Down Syndrome, congenital heart disease, moderate mental deficiency.   She does not have siblings.  Constance seems to be social, observing and affectionate little girl.

From our adoptive family who visited with her in November 2010:  ” Constance was  a sweet girl, she came up to me, sat next to me on the floor, and got closer and closer until she was in my lap.   She sat in my lap so sweetly holding my hand for a long time.   She is a small girl… before I knew her age I thought she was two years old.   She played well in her groupa…. the caregivers(nannies) for this groupa are wonderful, they love the children, teach the children, and take good care of them.  She is in a loving environment now but will be transferred soon.  It breaks my heart, I wish I could go back and get her.  She is too sweet for words.”

Elaina 25HA

Girl, born October 2010

The character is calm

Diagnosis: Down syndrome

From an adoptive family who visited with her in 2011:  When I held Elaina she melted into my arms and cuddled up close. She appeared to be about six months old but the director said she was approximately 10 months old at the time. Although she is small, she has the most adorable chubby cheeks and is surprisingly well-fed compared to the other children we saw at this orphanage. The director explained Elaina is a favorite among the workers because she is so sweet and affectionate. We were told she is “very healthy” with “no heart issues.” While I held her she made eye contact and held it. Her eyes were very dark and expressive and she smiled up at me the entire time. She is still so young and would absolutely thrive if adopted soon. The orphanage is in a very poor region and is run down. The children with special needs do not receive any therapy and are treated differently from the other children. However, the director is kind and loves the children and especially wants to find families for the children with special needs because she said “they have no future here.” She also told us Elaina has been in the orphanage since birth and was “rejected at the hospital” by her birth parents.

Elaina’s grant of $1065.00 was gifted to Laura in Asia.

Asia General Information

The orphan crisis for children with Down syndrome and other special needs crosses every political and continental border, extending through the countries of Asia.  Although many reside in foster homes, they are still discarded and need a forever family of their own.

China, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines all do an outstanding job of documenting each child’s social history, as well as providing thorough medical history and updates for potential adoptive families.   The process to adopt in these countries is very straightforward and predictable.  We have outstanding agency partners serving these children.  Length of travel and other requirements have been markedly relaxed over the last year, and even allow for single moms and larger families to adopt.

Despite all of these positive features, our Asian children are often the last to be chosen.  Please help us raise awareness and find adoptive families for them!

Warren

Boy, Born July, 2010
PRC
Blind and cleft palate

Listed: Nov 2011

Update 2017:
Warren’s Cleft palate was repaired in 2013.  He is severely delayed — he doesn’t walk, talk, or play with other children.  At 7 years old, he is only 19 pounds.  He desperately needs the better care a family can bring.

When he was younger, he was in a private facility and was doing much better. Warren needs a family that has experience with vision issues, access to appropriate resources for vision impaired children and cleft lip and palate services and resources, and understands the social impact of blindness.
