Mixed behavior and emotions disorder; activity and attention disorder; motor alaly; pseudobulbar dysarthria; farsightedness; astigmatism

Ryan was hospitalized by a psychiatrist because of confused behavior in 2008. His behavior took a noticeable turn in a year’s time.  He became irritable, no longer fulfilled orders and requests of his caregivers, and was behaving inadequately.  He is stubborn. His emotions are erratic, he is hyperactive, and has poor concentration. Ryan is immediate, he speaks a lot, he ask questions, but he does not listen for the answers.

He is currently taking medication and his condition is progressively changing: his activity has decreased, attention concentration improved, his moods stabilized, irritability decreased, and he began communication with children and personnel in a rather good way! Ryan’s medication are monitored and prescribed by a psychologist. It is recommended that he continue to see a psychologist and speech therapist.

His caregivers say he is easy going with both kids and staff. For the longest time he hardly spoke, his language consisting of only a few words but he is now speaking in full sentences but has trouble with the r, k, b, and a sounds. He has a speech therapist and social educator working with him. His communication skills are fairly good, he likes to play with other kids. He is brave around strangers. He is interested in his surroundings, but likes to be alone as well. He quickly joins a new activity but hardly focuses. Ryan is described as friendly, gentle, likes to hug and be praised, and is very inquisitive. He has good hygiene.  He is polite at the table. He knows to say hello, to use manners, to ask for things, and when to apologize. He can tell you his name and age. He is delayed in fine motor but his gross motor is age appropriate.

Edward #4-6

DOB: 2004

Edward is 7 years old and currently lives in an orphanage for older children. Though he just turned 7, he is very small for his age. He is only 40 inches tall and weighs 34 pounds.
He is attending a regular kindergarten class with minimal support. Developmentally, he’s making significant progress in all areas of his development.  His self-help skills are appropriate for his age: he is toilet trained; he washes his hands before and after meals, dresses himself and puts his shoes on himself, feeds himself and folds his own clothes.  He is instructed in independent living skills as part of his life at the orphanage.  He walks, runs and plays team sports. He knows his left from right, all his colors and numbers 1-10. He can identify animals, understands the concepts of day and night, understands directional words such as “front” and “back” and knows the days of the week and the seasons. He talks in short sentences and his vocabulary continues to improve. He correctly asks and answers questions. He can identify objects by name both in his environment and in photos. He recognizes right from wrong and plays with the other children in the group. He enjoys attention from adults.  He has difficulty concentrating at times and during group activities, he prefers games that involve cooking or house cleaning.  He’s made significant progress in all areas of development since beginning school and receiving direct instruction.

He can build a tower from 5 cubes and arranges them next to each other to make a train. He can screw and unscrew objects and place small circles on a stick. He eats independently, drinks from a cup, washes his hands and face, puts on his shoes and takes of his clothes. He can draw horizontal and vertical lines and a circle. Rowan

Boy, 8 years old

Married couples only, older parents welcome, large families welcome, travel required.

Rowan is an easy going, able, kind hearted, intelligent little boy who would love to be adopted.  He has some notable items on his medical but after a month long visit on a hosting program in the US, he was evaluated and found not to have anything more than a lazy eye that required glasses and a very mild curviture which requires no surgical intervention, as it was so minor it only causes mild aches.  Rowans skull plates fused normally, and there is no physcial sign of hydrocephalus. The neurosurgeon did recommend he stay away from full contact sports such as football and rugby just to be cautionary, though he felt he was developing normally and was generally healthy.  An opthomologist agreed he responded age appropriate to his exam, and needed a perscription which would help with his mild lazy eyes but saw no other issues.  Rowan makes excellent eye contact, gives hugs when appropriate (truly heart warming hugs where you can feel the love) and is shy around strangers. He shows no unusual physchological behaviors and does very well with new experiences.  Rowan is an EXCELLENT traveler, rolling his own bag, hopping on and off the escalator with ease and sitting through a flight with music or video.  Rowan does very well physically-rides a tricycle, runs backwards and forwards, skips, jumps, climbs all playground equipement, swings (pumps himself), rides a childs 4 wheeler, etc.   He does well on mental tasks as well, he matches like items, reads and writes, does up to 48 piece puzzels, colors in the lines and catches onto age level games quickly such as  Candyland. He is at a normal height and weight for his age.  He really enjoys pop music and can sing rather well.  Rowan plays well with all children but is very guarded around boys his age.  After time he warmed up to a father figure in the house and was quickly very trusting and helpful to all females in the immediate family.  Any family that pursuses this child should know that it will take him a while to trust and play without his guard on around boys near his age.  He sometimes hoards his toys or treats around boys, but this is not un-typical as he is growing up in an orphanage and will subside over time.  He responds best to gentle but firm redirection, more stern discipline causes pouting as he really feels he is in really big trouble and is not sure you will include him again so families should be kind, fun and easy going.  He is truly a wonderful boy that is clearly mis-labeled and is a diamond waiting to be found!!  Host family is willing to discuss this child with homestudy approved seriously interested families.  Please move quickly so he doesn't have to wait any longer!  Many photos and video available.

Boy, born 3/29/04

An incredibly handsome and charming boy who is seven years old, physically healthy and diagnosed with moderate mental retardation. This little guy is quite independent in self care areas and enjoys eating and playing with others. He lived with his birth family for the first three years of his life, currently resides in an institution and receives speech and occupational therapy. He loves music and books and enjoys the computer. His adorable face makes him a favorite of his caregivers who report him to be popular with his classmates. It is felt that he would make more progress in learning and development in a family setting with consistent care. Resilience is the word to describe this little boy who grieved hard for his biological family and who now longs for a family to love him as their own.

Brody

Boy, born April 2006

Based on the time that I was able to spend with him, I believe that Brody is autistic. Brody does not make eye contact however he shows no aversion to touch and actually likes to be held. Brody was transferred in December but while he was at the baby house, he exhibited a lot of self-harming behaviours, namely banging his head constantly, harder than I have ever seen before. Nevertheless, Brody is the child I saw the most progress with. During our one-on-one time he was calm and would often go the entire hour without engaging in any self-harming behaviour. He would smile, laugh, and explore his environment and sometimes even make eye contact for seconds at a time. Since being transferred to an orphanage for preschool-aged children (age 4-8) with special needs, Brody is doing much better. While at the baby orphanage Brody had what I thought were permanent bumps on his head the size of half a ping pong ball as a result of banging his head on the ground. Brody has since nearly stopped banging his head and when I last saw him in January those bumps had gone down considerably. The orphanage Brody is currently in is one of the good ones. Small with a good staff-to-child ratio (there are 6 kids to 2 workers in Brody’s group). It is clear that the workers care about the children very much and show them plenty of love and affection. Brody can walk independently, is being toilet trained and is learning to feed himself. He does not speak and it’s hard to tell what, if anything, he understands. Brody responds well to music (i.e. me singing to him) and his absolute favourite thing is playing with someone’s hands – clapping them together, watching the fingers wiggle back and forth, etc. If you work at it a bit you can get plenty of smiles out of him and he has the best laugh when you tickle him.

Unfortunately, if he is not adopted by the time he is eight-years-old, Brody will be transferred to an institution. I know that Brody will become more and more troubled in an institution setting however I believe that with a patient, loving family he has the potential to be a truly happy little boy.

Brody has a brother, who is also in the orphanage.   It is not known if the brother is available for adoption, but families should be aware, and consider adopting them together if possible.

Russ

Boy, born August 2005

Russ's profile says "goloproentsephaliy" which is unclear, other than there's some condition with his brain.  It's unclear if it's a physical or mental condition.

It has been suggested that his 'goloproentsephaliy' may actually be holoprosencephaly like Catherine 9HA, but it would be a milder form than hers i.e. lobar or semi-lobar holoprosencephaly, rather than alobar.

We're hoping to get additional information soon.

Ross looks a little forlorn, but he's really chewing a chocolate treat!

His file says he has a seizure disorder, an possibly other mental disorders and brain damage — it is unclear if that all refers back to his seizure disorder.  It does not state that he has a mental delay, but it is possible.

It also appears that he has either a lazy eye or vision issues, from the pictures.

Alan has a cleft palate and hydrocephalus, as well as mild mental retardation.  This little boy does not have a moustache, the children were eating a snack just before their pictures were taken :)   However, he does show strong facial features of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and the cleft palate and hydrocehalus are common conditions associated with this syndrome.  Be sure to research FAS thoroughly so you are prepared for the challenges that come with this special need.

Carter

Guardian Angel

Boy, Born June 2004

From his medical records:  Spina bifida;  congenital defect of central nervous system;  Arnold-Chiari syndrome;  Lower paraparesis;  combined hydrocephaly

From his caregivers:  The boy is very smart, friendly, and communicative. He wants be adopted.

From a family who met him in early 2012:

Carter is pretty quiet, and seems sweet, cooperative and observant.  He’s walking with a walker, now, and focuses on that a lot in the halls … He has the most precious smile I have ever seen on a little boy. He is adorable- he still has some baby fat in his cheeks- and he moves so well. You can’t tell it in the picture, but his feet actually flip completely in. He walks on the side of his feet and his ankle and then flicks his feet underneath him. Give the boy some therapy and braces and he’ll be off. He’s a happy kid- and again, must be smart to be in the class he’s in. He’s a little guy- maybe the size of a 5 year old? Very cute.

Carter’s in the “normal school classes” at the orphanage, meaning that he’s learning the same things the other cognitively typical kids are learning in school … He seems like a very laidback, fun loving kid with a perfect sense of timing for practical jokes. He understands cause and effect, is able to be sneaky when surprising someone (again, a mark of intelligence). He’s pretty obedient, especially compared to most 8 year old boys I know.

He’s the kind of kid that refused to let some labels define him. Most of the kids there with spina bifida are in wheelchairs. He’s walking. Walking well, actually, either pushing his walker or his buddy’s wheelchair. He’s adorable- he has the cutest little chubby cheeks that plump up so sweetly when he smiles (which is often). His eyes have that mischevious little twinkle, it reminds me of the Dennis the Menace character with his cuteness. He talks, is polite, is sweet and funny and smart.

Marcus

Guardian Angel

Boy, Born December 2002

Marcus is a sweet little boy!  He is 9 years old and hoping for his own forever family.  He was born with spina bifida.  He is not able to walk on his own.

From his medical records:  myelocele; Q 5, hydrocephaly;  flail legs with damage of functions of pelvic organs.

From our facilitation team: I personally saw this boy and talked to him. He is a very smart boy. Unfortunately he cannot walk at all, and he uses a wheelchair. I am not sure whether he is toilet trained or wears diapers, because he is a big boy who was uncomfortable with careful attention to him, particularly to his disability.   He told me that he wants to be adopted., and that’s why he allowed to make a picture of him.  He did not want to demonstrate his disability, so he covered his legs with a blanket.

Several kids had been adopted from this orphanage before, and the Director is rather open to foreign adoption. She keeps in touch with all the families who adopted the children from her orphanage. She showed me only the kids who demonstrated their wish to be taken to the family. And when I made pictures all of them confirmed their desire to be adopted. I believe the Director will be very glad if this child is taken to the good family.”

The boy is very smart, communicative, and friendly. He wants be adopted.

Andrew

He has been in 3 different foster homes since birth. He had 2 siblings that were adopted (one domestically and one to another country).
He had laser treatment for retinal detachment and now wears glasses to correct his vision. He receives speech therapy and cognitive therapy. Patrick 2H

Guardian Angel

Boy, Born October 11, 2003

Patrick is a sweet and able boy who is diagnosed with CP.  He does have significant facial features of FAS, although this is not documented in his medical records.  Patrick is able to walk and play on his own, and is very high functioning.  He is the best friend of MICHAELA.  Although they can not be adopted together, they both strongly desire a family of their own and are high encough functioning cognitively to recognize and fear the next transfer.

From our coordinator:  Patrick is the very best friend of Michaela. They spend all the time together: playing together, helping each other. He is a smart, inquisitive, very friendly and kind boy. His dream is to have a family and loving parents.  He knows he is facing a transfer to an institution for disabled children of older age, where he will not have a chance to develop his potential. The orphanage staff advocates for these two children with all their hearts.

From a family who met him in July 2011:   He has strabismus and cerebral palsy. But, as you know, cerebral palsy is a spectrum disorder. He can walk, talk, and play just fine. When he walked, there was a slight halting to each step, but it did not slow him down one bit!! When he came up to us, he looked in my bag and saw “Chutes and Ladders.” He kept pulling at it, and then he opened the game board and let out a squeal of delight. Then he went in my bag to find the pieces. I could tell he really wanted to play the board game, but we were in the hallway and there was no room, so I pulled out the box of playdoh. He managed to pull out one of the containers and open it himself (which is difficult for an adult to do!) I showed him how to work the playdoh, and he was so happy. He was able to play and shape playdoh just fine. He was so creative with the playdoh. I helped him make a duck from the stencil and then he pretended it was swimming through the air. He was telling a whole story about this pink duck in his language. I gave (our daughter) the camera, and they kept taking pictures of each other. He kept making funny faces for most of the pictures. When he was done playing with one thing, he carefully put it back where it came from. When it was time to go, he just said “bye-bye” and left. No fits or anything. Such a happy boy. He might not be the most active child, but I am confident he would be a great child for any family.

Galen is an orphanage favorite!  he has brown hair and brown eyes.  Galen was born with mild CP.  He is very physically active, able to walk on his own with no problems.  The caregivers love him and say he is very friendly, smart and helpful.  He does have strabismus.

Galen seems to be much like our Victor.  He very  much recognizes that he doesn't have his own mama and papa, and wants a family of his own.

Galen is blessed to still be at the baby house.  He needs a family of his own!

NEW PHOTO!  And what a blessing, too!  Look how handsome he is!

Brandon is a sweet little boy who was born with CP.   He is said to have "severe mental delays" and his speech is also very delayed, but he is at least able to get around on his own and is not bedridden.  The change in him, to be in the loving environment of his own family, would be remarkable, surely!

He also has crossed eyes and astigmatism.

Brandon is blessed to still be at the baby house.  He is facing the institution.

Sasha

BOY, born March 8, 2005

I LOST MY FAMILY!!!

Sasha is just darling…handsome, happy, active, and smart!  He was born with a minor VSD (heart condition).  Some of his facial features may indicate FAS, but this is not documented and is only a cautionary disclosure so families are prepared.   It is just as possible that he does NOT have FAS.
If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.

Sasha has already been transferred to the older child internat.  He can be adopted with NIKO.

Sasha also has a grant available through Project Hopeful.

I LOST MY FAMILY!!!

Niko is a handsome devil, isn't he?  Blonde hair and beautiful brown eyes.  He was born with a congenital anomaly of the urinary system, he has extrophia of the bladder (doctor says this is operable).  He is cognitively delayed as well and needs special help with speech.  We do not have info about a potential cause for this cognitive delay, but you would have access to all his medical and social history records once you arrive.   He is very active and capable physically though, and can really benefit from surgery and a loving family.

Niko has already been transferred to an older child internat and can be adopted with SASHA.

Niko also has a grant available through Project Hopeful.

Yuri

Boy, Born April 14, 2003

Yuri is a handsome little boy with incredible potential!    He is officially diagnosed with a cognitive delay and "syndrome of movement inhibition", but this child is happy and active and very independently mobile!     He is a favorite of the caregivers, and has so much potential in a loving, family environment!

Yuri has brown hair and blue eyes.   He is already living in the institution, but has only been there a short time.   He needs a family NOW to prevent any further regression in his cognitive abilities.  Right now, he is quite a bright boy!   Please give Yuri a chance!

Donations will be accepted for this child when further information is received.

Colin

Boy, Born December 16, 2002

Colin has the most striking blue eyes!  He was born with CP and is not able to walk on his own yet.   His upper body seems to be fine, but his legs are affected by the spasticity.  Colin has tremendous potential for improvement with therapy and a loving family.  He is medically healthy outside of his CP.

From his medical records: microcephaly, CP, spastic tetraplegia

As with all children living in these difficult conditions,  this child's cognitive development has regressed significantly since he/she was younger.  It is of crucial importance that any family considering the adoption of an older child from the mental institution setting be well prepared for what to expect with regards to how the neglect and lack of adequate medical care and nourishment has affected this child.    These children all have TREMENDOUS potential for improvement, and deserve to have a life outside these four walls.

Kiril

Boy, Born January 20, 2004

This spunky little angel is ready to melt your heart!   Kiril has blonde hair and hazel eyes, and a smile that can light up a room!  He was born with cerebral palsy.   One of our own adoptive families who visited with him in March 2008 said this about Kiril:  "  I'm a sucker for blondies and this little guy with his green-brown eyes is adorable!  He smiled and wanted to interact with me when I came into the room despite the cries of his neighbor.  His smiles were brief but heartwarming and then he was curious about what I was up to.  Each time the camera flashed he rewarded it with a great grin!  Except it was always right AFTER the flash so I couldn't capture his sweet smile."

NEW UPDATE!:  What a blessing to still have visibility of Kirill, and know he is still fighting for a chance and waiting for his family to come for him.   He is regressing, as he is given little opportunity to stretch or be mobile at all.   He needs help for the strength to sit up now, but even still he wears a smile and a light in his eyes.  There is a loving, forever family out there for this boy!

Bobby

Guardian Angel Boy, Born February 2004

Diagnosis: cerebral palsy, mental delay, secondary cardiopathy,  was born with partial  optic atrophy of both eyes, bronchopulmonary  dysplasia.   Unable to walk.  We have had several successful adoptions from this institution, and this region often waives the 10 day waiting period.  Married couples only, no family size or parent age restrictions.   Families should be HS approved (or nearly so) prior to committing for Bobby.

From a missionary who visited with him in March 2012:  Bobby was simply beautiful! Quieter than the other children who became quite intense trying to get attention, Bobby sat back and watched. His eyes that are most striking…they are like dark brown pools and theyare very knowing. I pulled him into my lap and our eyes connected, there is real potential within his eyes. He smiled, i just wanted to carry him out…this gentle soul with the slow curving smile…happy to be pulled into my lap and rocked and cuddled and spoken to in a language that he couldn’t understand. I loved him…he would be a wonderful son for somebody! He couldn’t walk at all but moved himself around independently on his knees. His face was a yellowish color that was alarming and may possibly hint at other issues. He really needs to find a family soon.

From a missionary who visited with him in March 2012:  Evan is also in the boys new house where just 9 children are.   He was gentle, lovey, cuddly and just so sweet.   He is severely delayed but a gentle delight to be around and he loved stacking blocks with me. He was picked on quite a bit by the others who I saw hitting him.   Felt so desperate for him.

Please give this little guy a chance to fulfill his potential!    One of our own adoptive families who visited with him in March 2008 shared this with us:  "This little guy did NOT want to be photographed!  He was quite happy doing whatever he was doing before being brought into the room but having his picture taken was not high on his priority list.  He has "deep mental delay" (understand that this is according to Eastern European standards — he was more aware and alert than a child with Down syndrome might be at the same age).  I can't tell you his eye color because he down-right refused to look at me, but those blonde curls sure were cute!"

Oh my goodness, he's grown so much!

From a missionary who visited with him recently:  " Artyem is blind.  He was born in March 2003.  He is a very social boy and my name reminded him of some poem/song so he started singing it over and over to me.  He likes to be held and a lot of contact.  He gave me the impression of being smart as he felt my entire face, nose, ears, hair, everything to try to get a picture of what I looked like.  I think he would learn English really fast.  We were trying to color these things we were putting together (and even though he couldn't see it I was trying to help him so it just wouldn't be blank when put up with the other kids).  He didn't want to color it but just put it together and I said you need to color it first.  He started repeating in English to me over and over…..you need to color it first, you need to color it first."

Little Vitaly is so handsome, with his dark hair and eyes!   Vitaly was born with CP and is not able to walk at this time.    He is moderately cognitively delayed, but will regress every day he is in this place.  He is already living in an institution, and he needs to be rescued desperately.   Otherwise he will never have a chance to walk, never have the opportunity for surgery or therapy.

$100.00 is available towards the cost of my adoption!
