Warren

Boy, Born July 1, 2010

Blind and cleft palate

ID: HO-B11_124
DOB: 07/01/2010

This resilient little boy is estimated to have been born on July 1, 2010. He was very small and weak at intake and was diagnosed with cleft lip and palate and blindness when he came into care at approximately 2 months old. The orphanage decided to move him to a therapeutic care facility in a different city to receive more specialized treatment. Once there he gained weight quickly and after just one month his overall health and development improved.

Warren is now able to sit in a baby seat, hold his head up for several minutes, and turn over without help. He smiles when played with or his name is called, and he can hold a toy and grab a hand. He likes to kick often too, and his arm and leg development is reported to be good. He is now an excellent eater and is not picky with food. His caregivers are hoping to schedule him for cleft lip and / or palate repair surgery soon. Further assessment on his vision impairment is needed. This child needs a family that has experience with vision issues, access to appropriate resources for vision impaired children and cleft lip and palate services and resources, and understands the social impact of blindness.

To adopt this child, applicants must be 30-54 years old and meet an income requirement of $30,000 plus $10,000 per additional family member, with $80,000 net worth.  More than 4 children in the home may be accepted.*  Single moms welcome.  Only one parent must travel.

Peter

Boy, born December 2007

Peter is 3 years old and has been at this home for almost 2.5 years. Peter has cerebral palsy and sickle cell anemia. His sickle cell anemia is being closely monitored and he receives medication for this. He also has a history of seizures. He responds with smiles and movements when being spoken to or held. Peter seems to really enjoy time spent in the swimming pool. He cannot sit, hold his head, or roll over unassisted.

From someone who works with him:

Resiliency only begins to describe Peter! This young boy has gone through so much medically, yet still finds the strength to smile through it all. No matter what, rubbing his head will produce a sweet smile of pure contentment and a look of peace in his eyes! Peter certainly has faced more than his share of medical challenges these past months. For quite some time, he was experiencing both scalp and skin issues that were resistant to seemingly all conventional treatments. After a long course of steroids and special mixtures of creams, Peter has finally experienced some relief and his skin is in the process of healing. While he has a history of seizures and is positive for sickle cell, both of those conditions are wonderfully under control with daily medications. Peter enjoys receiving special care and attention and really responds well to being able to attach to certain people he can trust.

Aiden

Guardian Angel

Boy, born May 2007

From a volunteer who spent several months at this orphanage:

Aiden is visually impaired (I'm not sure if he has some vision or if he is 100% blind). Aiden has some more significant delays however it is difficult to tell if he is cognitively delayed for medical reasons or if his delays are simply a result of institutionalization / lack of stimulation. Aiden engages in a lot of self-stimulation such as poking his eyes, tapping his head on the side of his crib, rocking back and forth, etc. When I first met Aiden he was able to walk around the edges of the crib holding on to the sides, but he would not walk independently, even while holding on to someone's hands. As I worked with him however and he grew to trust me he began to take his first steps and now he loves to walk! Still, at least while I was there, the workers never let him out of his playpen.  Aiden does not speak but he responds to his name and I believe he understands simple directions. He is not toilet trained but he is learning to feed himself.  Aiden is difficult to engage. He doesn't initiate interaction but when you play with him/tickle him, etc. he is full of smiles and laughter. I believe that this boy has way more potential than can be seen right now. Whoever Aiden's family will need to be persistent about getting in his face in order to force him to engage and patient with what may be slow progress but I believe that with the consistent love and stimulation that a family would bring this little guy has all kinds of potential.

From a missionary who spent several months at his orphanage at the end of 2011:

Aiden is a complicated little boy. His years of minimal attention and probably some sensory issues seem to be the biggest of his struggles. He does at times hit his head or bite his hands to self stimulate. He let me hold and comfort him when he hit his head harder than he meant to one time, which was a great sign as far as attachment and trust goes. I like to refer to Aiden as my "mouthy" boy. He loves to chew on hard toys, and he very much enjoyed holding a slinky in his mouth and shaking his head to make it fly back and forth. He does not seem to have any vision at all. He navigates fairly well despite his lack of sight. His favorite thing ever is to be tickled. He has a wonderful smile and laugh. He will need a lot of attention and stimulation to help him to recover from all he has experienced, but I think he would really blossom with the right family!

Josiah

Boy, born May 2007

Josiah has cerebral palsy. He can be very interactive and can comprehend what is being said to him. But he cannot sit, hold his head up, or roll over unassisted. He also has seizures that are being controlled with medication. He loves when people sing songs with him.  Josiah is a very happy and loving boy. He is always full of smiles.

From someone who works with him:

We have had the privilege of caring for Josiah for 3 years. He is the oldest child in our care and has been with us longer than any other child. Josiah was abandoned at a nearby hospital when he was 1. Josiah has cerebral palsy and requires special care and attention. He has limited control over his movement and needs support when sitting. For 3 years, our nannies and staff have cared for Josiah, fed him and bathed him. Ask any person who has cared for Josiah though and they will say that they are the one who was blessed.

When you are with Josiah, it is clear that God's love resides in Josiah. Josiah can't talk, but he loves to smile and interact with anyone who will talk to him. Josiah cannot sing like most of us, but each day during nanny prayer and singing Josiah joins in with a big smile. Our deep desire is for Josiah to join his forever family through adoption. We have had difficulty finding that family, but we know that God has a plan for Josiah . We also know that where ever he goes, Josiah will be a blessing as his loved ones bless and care for him.

Jeremy-CH

Age: 1 ½ year old boy

Diagnosis: Post-surgery meningocele (congenital meningocele at his lumbosacral area), Phimosis, and Left foot turned inward.

Location: China

Jeremy’s surgery for the meningocele went smoothly and his post-surgery recovery was good. Currently his left lower limb’s strength is relatively poor compared to his right lower limbs. He has symptoms of a slightly turning in foot. Jeremy can stretch and contract it. While leaning on something to stand, he has little strength in his left leg. His right leg can stand well. Jeremy has a good appetite. It is reported that not long after his surgery, he grew much plumper. Jeremy’s personality is relatively introverted. He does not love to smile, but will with people he is familiar with. While playing, he can tend to go “wild”. It is reported that this little guy has “very lazy hands”. Regardless of what he’s doing, he is unwilling to use his hands to grab something unless it is something he wants and then he will happily go to take it. When there is no one around, he will not fuss. He often puts his two little hands in front of his face; and then he spreads out all ten fingers, and turns his hands from palm to back, back and forth, looking at his hands, as if he is counting his fingers. It is especially cute!!

There is a $1500 grant available through the agency for Jeremy.

Nicholas

BOY, born November 9, 2006

Nicholas is officially diagnosed with FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).  His delay is considered significant. He needs a loving family to help him achieve all he can be.  He does not appear to have any asdditional medical complications from his FAS. This picture makes him seem to have vision problems, but I think it's just a bad picture.

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.  This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.  There is no way to know this ahead of time.

Jared (26)

Jared (26)

BOY, born May 1, 2007

This handsome young man, with dark hair and dark eyes, was born with a rare genetic condition called Stickler Syndrome.  His medical records also indicate microcephaly, a common symptom of SS.

Individuals with Stickler syndrome experience a range of signs and symptoms. Some people have no signs and symptoms; others have some or all of the features described below. In addition, each feature of this syndrome may vary from subtle to severe.

A characteristic feature of Stickler syndrome is a somewhat flattened facial appearance. This is caused by underdeveloped bones in the middle of the face, including the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose. A particular group of physical features, called the Pierre Robin sequence, is common in children with Stickler syndrome. Robin sequence includes a U-shaped or sometimes V-shaped cleft palate (an opening in the roof of the mouth) with a tongue that is too large for the space formed by the small lower jaw. Children with a cleft palate are also prone to ear infections and occasionally swallowing difficulties.

Many people with Stickler syndrome are very nearsighted (described as having high myopia) because of the shape of the eye. People with eye involvement are prone to increased pressure within the eye (ocular hypertension) which could lead to glaucoma and tearing or detachment of the light-sensitive retina of the eye (retinal detachment). Cataract may also present as an ocular complication associated with Stickler’s Syndrome. The jelly-like substance within the eye (the vitreous humour) has a distinctive appearance in the types of Stickler syndrome associated with the COL2A1 and COL11A1 genes. As a result regular appointments to a specialist ophthalmologist are advised. The type of Stickler syndrome associated with the COL11A2 gene does not affect the eye.

People with this syndrome have problems that affect things other than the eyes and ears. Arthritis, abnormality to ends of long bones, vertebrae abnormality, curvature of the spine, scoliosis, joint pain, and double jointedness are all problems that can occur in the bones and joints. Physical characteristics of people with Stickler can include flat cheeks, flat nasal bridge, small upper jaw, pronounced upper lip groove, small lower jaw, and palate abnormalities, these tend to lessen with age and normal growth and palate abnormalities can be treated with routine surgery.

Another sign of Stickler syndrome is mild to severe hearing loss that, for some people, may be progressive (see hearing loss with craniofacial syndromes). The joints of affected children and young adults may be very flexible (hypermobile). Arthritis often appears at an early age and worsens as a person gets older. Learning difficulties, not intelligence, can also occur because of hearing and sight impairments if the school is not informed and the student is not assisted within the learning environment.

Stickler syndrome is thought to be associated with an increased incidence of mitral valve prolapse of the heart, although no definitive research supports this.

Simeon

Born October 2007

Simeon is a beautiful Roma child with dark hair and big brown eyes.  He is significantly delayed, and diagnosed with cerebral palsy.  We are trying to get more information on his social history.  Simeon is a fraternal twin, whose sister has already been adopted.

Simeon is described as mostly non-verbal, and is not able to walk on his own.  There just seems to be so much potential for him in a family environment.  He is already an outcast because of his darker skin and will be left institutionalized – and likely bedridden — if not adopted.

From a family who visited with him in 2011:  "Simeon" is barely responsive to stimuli, but I believe that could change if he received regular, loving attention.  I didn't observe any of the orphanage workers spending much time interacting with him.  There were times that I was able to get him to smile and grip my hand.  After a few days, he was even able to clap!  But most of the time he is staring off in any direction and seems completely unable to control most of his movements.  He was always either lying down or propped up in a sitting position.  I never heard him speak.  I also never heard him cry or fuss. Overall, a very calm child. "

Married couples only, larger families and older parents welcome.  Travel required.

Neil

Boy, born March 2009

Photo from May 2011 (More photos available)

Neil has hydrocephalus.  In January of 2010 a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt was placed to drain the fluid that would otherwise collect in his brain.  Neil also has a history of seizures and is receiving anti-seizure medication.  He is currently experiencing excellent health and is gaining weight steadily.  He does not sit unassisted due to the weight of his head.  When laying flat he can roll himself from side to side.

From someone who works with him:

Neil truly is a joy every day to interact with! He captures the essence of innocence with the way he sweetly watches the world around him and smiles in response to conversation. Though he does experience extremely painful headaches due to hydrocephalus, he responds well to simple Tylenol and can get back to enjoying the rest of the day. Neil absolutely loves to be carried around to look at the blue sky and will laugh and giggle as he sees its beauty. Other than the occasional headaches, Neil stays extremely healthy and his seizures are completely under control on Phenobarbitol. He enjoys holding his own bottle and playing around after he is finished waving it around to amuse himself in an adorable fashion. We are in the process of getting Neil a new special chair that will help him better interact with his environment!

Owen 3G

Owen (egxb-3)

Guardian Angel

Boy, Born December 2007

This darling little boy is waiting for his forever family, and we believe his condition to be one called Saethre-Chotzen Syndrome.

Also known as Acrocephalosyndyldactyly Type Chotzen or Saethre-Chotzen Syndrome. Chotzen Syndrome is a dominant genetic condition. They have a tower-shaped skull (acrocephaly), fused fingers and/or toes (syndactyly), asymmetric face, widely spaced eyes, droopy eyelid (ptosis), strabismus (crossed or "wall-eyes"), beak-like nose, small upper jaw, and jutting out lower jaw (prognathism).   Some plates in their skull close early.   This is called craniosynostosis.   Often people with Chotzen Syndrome are mildly hard of hearing. Sometimes they're unusually short.   Occasionally the closing of the plates in their skull can compress their brain and slow their development.   Sometimes boys with Chotzen Syndrome have undescended testicles.

Darren

BOY, born September 2007

UPDATE!   Darren has been visisted by a group of therapists, and they have such wonderful progress news about him!  " Our team has gotten to know this happy little guy over the past several years. When we saw him in April 2010 we were able to work with him during a presentation at the orphanage in front of doctors, staff, and caregivers. We watched then as Darren attempted to take his first assisted steps using a walker we brought with us on the trip. He was very weak, and tired very quickly, but those beginning steps happened with the assistance of our physical therapists.

This year when we returned in October, our first view of Darren was him in his walker, moving about his room! It made our hearts so full to see the change in him over the months since we had seen him last! He can pull himself up to standing position when he is holding on to something. He is currently very vocal, but is not using words. He plays with sounds, smiles, and laughs and has a very expressive face! He enjoys engaging in play while laying in the floor, fun toys, and we worked on reaching and pointing to things he liked while in a seated position.  Our occupational therapists say that Darren has good visual tracking skills and has full movement of both arms. He was able to hold toys and objects and was beginning to drop things into buckets during play.  Darren’s smile definitely stole our hearts, and we are praying that his family finds him soon! We would love to share more about this lovable little guy!"

From his medical records: Multiple congenital defects of development, CNS, eyes, locomotory apparatus, congenital bilateral clubfoot, strabismus

Darren is significantly delayed cognitively and physically.   He is typically a content child.  he is able to stand, but only with help.   Physical therapy and surgery can do wonders for him.   He is facing transfer this year, and will remain bedridden for life if he is not adopted.

Austin 3G

Austin  (16ka1-3)
Boy, Born June 2006

This darling little boy is waiting for his forever family. He has very unique facial features, but I am unfamiliar with the condition that causes these.  One of the possible diagnoses we have been made aware of *may* be a form of Russell Silver Syndrome  (RSS). This most recent photo shows he is growing well, and seems to be active and relatively happy.   After what we learned about RSS, it seems much more likely than the previously supposed progeria, which is good for Austin!  Please consider adopting Austin and helping him be the best that he can be! There will never be a place for him in his country outside the walls of an institution, just like our children with Down syndrome.

This darling little boy is waiting for his forever family.   He struggles with significant cleft issues and facial deformities.   He also struggles with kidney problems.   From his medical records, they indicate that he has Edwards Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 18.    This is quite a challenge, and most children do not survive past birth.   We do not know if he has any of the other complications, but he clearly has many of the facial features and cognitive delays.

Gabe (L)

Boy, born April 2008
has older half siblings (not available for adoption)
Shaken baby syndrome; Asthma; low muscle tone; open oval window; suspicion of autism spectrum disorder

Gabe was born via cesarean due to hypertension and fetal hypoxia. When he was 4 months old he was diagnosed with a muscle tone disorder, physical therapy was provided. In February 2009 moderate bronchial asthma was diagnosed. He has had bronchitis six times, chicken pox, ear inflammation, tonsillitis, and rhinopharyngitis. He began crawling at 13 months, sat independently at 14 months, he could stand holding on to things at 15 months, and was walking with assistance at 17 months. He had a heart defect of the auricle wall but when reevaluated by a cardiologist in 2010 it was found that it had closed and only an open oval hole remained. Gabe’s physical development corresponds with his age and is described as normal and harmonious. He prefers to play alone. He was evaluated for autism and there was not enough information to confirm the diagnosis.

Update from December 2010: Gabe is walking independently and can climb up stairs holding an adult’s hand. His coordination and balance are insufficient. Interaction with adults depends on his mood, sometimes he cuddles, smiles and wishes for affection and touch. He does however avoid eye contact. He does not interact or play with other children, does not participate in collective activities and shows no interest in them. He likes toys that make noise, play music, moving toys (beads, trundles, whirligigs), and blocks. He frequently puts toys in his mouth and licks things. He enjoys spinning the wheels on the toy cars. During individual activities he does try to imitate elementary actions and will seek out help from an adult if he is struggling, however he gets tired quickly and becomes irritable. His behavior is sporadic and he gets angry quickly when his wishes (to leave group, open closets and doors) are ignored. When he gets angry he falls down, cries, and calms himself down slowly. He shows stereotypical hand movements: he twiddles his fingers, puts them into his mouth, knocks with his fingers on various surfaces, and scratches them. Gabe does not understand what is told to him and does not perform tasks that are asked of him. He reacts to his name episodically. He does not speak, only spontaneous sounds caused by him playing with his lips and tongue, he sometimes laughs loudly. He does not eat by himself, he is spoonfed. He does not take the spoon himself and he does not chew, he sucks on harder food. He drinks from a bottle and holds it himself. His appetite is good, he does not select food, prefers to drink a lot of drinks. He has trouble sleeping and will chew the side of his crib. He sleeps sensitively and wakes up frequently. Has no interest in sitting on the potty.

Tucker

Boy, born September 2010
Congenital malformations of cardiac septa

Hello, cutie!  Isn’t Tucker a doll?

We don’t have any additional health history – families should be prepared that Tucker may need heart surgery once home.  He also appears to have crossed-eyes in this picture.

From a family who met him in April 2012:

Oh, this sweet, playful boy was so much fun! He would come over to us and play peek-a-boo and then run away laughing! He was very kind and played well with the other children, he was much loved by the nannies, and would make a wonderful son and brother!

Talbot

Boy, born December 2009

Developmental Delays, feeding issues, failure to thrive, left congenital ptosis, laryngomalacia and supraglotoplasty

T-GLAD

Talbot entered foster care as a result of being removed from his home due to his parent’s inability to provide a safe and stable, loving home for him.  He has resided with a foster family since July 2011.  He is growing and developing in his foster family’s care.

Talbot likes toys that make sound.  When he hears music, he dances and laughs out-loud.  He enjoys taking walks with his foster family.  He is able to say Thank you, Auntie, Mama, and Papa.

Talbot was diagnosed at a few months of age as  having feeding issues, failure to thrive, left congenital ptosis, laryngomalacia and supraglotoplasty. According to a October 2011 developmental report, he was delayed in cognition, language, & gross and fine motor skills.  He attends weekly occupational and language therapy classes, showing improvement in the past few months.  He is able to walk on his own and at the time of the assessment, he was working on climbing stairs.  His appetite has picked up and he enjoys eating noodles and biscuits among other foods.

Talbot will do well in a family who is patient, has time to work on developmental growth through play and exploration, and able to access early intervention services.

Kody #1-7

Guardian Angel

DOB: 2008
Diagnosis: developmental delays
Kody was born premature at 27 weeks gestation. His birth mother smoked during the pregnancy and her amniotic sac ruptured 3 days before delivery. He was breech and delivered via C-section in poor condition and weighing just 2 pounds. Many of his delays are consistent with a child born at this early gestational age.

Today, Kody is healthy, though he has occasional respiratory infections. He’s had eye surgery for strabismus. His motor skills have been delayed as a result of being premature, but he is now walking well independently. He reaches for objects, tracks them with his eyes and has good visual motor skills. He picks up objects and studies them intently. If he is unfamiliar with an item/toy, he will shake it, turn it and check it out in detail to attempt to figure out what it does. He is using combinations of sounds and putting syllables together to make simple words. He does not have any true purposeful speech yet , which is a source of frustration for him when he’s trying to communicate his wants/needs. Sometimes he gets upset and other times, he just shuts down and won’t communicate at all. He enjoys interacting with adults and laughs loudly when being played with. He has a good attention span and will focus on the adult interacting with him or what he’s playing with. He initiates games with adults. He drinks from a cup unassisted and eats with a spoon. He has difficulty with chewing. He has a 1:1 caregiver that spends time with him daily.

We have several updated photos and a video clip of Kody.

Neville 3F

Guardian Angel

oawp-3
Boy, born December 2010

Eyes of Gray
Hair light brown

From his medical records:  Congenital communicating hydrocephalus.

The first surgery was unsuccessful, the second surgery was performed but the shunt is still not operating properly on one brain hemisphere.  Neville shows very little physical activity, is not crawling and not walking, sits with support.  Unfortunately, the child is not getting proper attention and care, as an orphan — he truly needs a family!    Neville was born a twin, but the family only took the healthy child home :(     The child is very calm, loves attention and always smiles and so happy when being held.

Tobias 2H

Boy, born Jun 2007
Brown hair, brown eyes
The nature of bad eating, not sleeping, smiling, playing with children, interested in toys
Diagnosis:  HIV+, completely blind

He is very joyful, he has a normal intellect, he can amazingly well orient himself in his groupa room: he knows where the toys are, where the dining table and his particular place is, he follows the caregiver being led by her voice only, he “drives” the toy car around the room. The caregivers say he can go to the restroom by himself, he eats himself, he is learning to get dressed himself.

Andrew

Guardian Angel

Boy, Born May 2007

Oh Andrew…..Andrew was born with cataracts in both eyes.  He is completely blind, and has little opportunity to try to manage his surroundings and learn anything but darkness and loneliness in his current environment.  He most likely has other cognitive and physical delays, but what a difference a loving family will make for him!!

Families considering Andrew should be well versed in the effects of institutional life on a child like Andrew, who has had little stimulation of any kind.

From a family who met Andrew in January 2012:

From what I saw, Andrew is a very smart little boy who is very much in need of a family to rescue him from orphanage life. There was one nanny who really liked Andrew, and she would actually let him out of his crib to walk around the room (very rare for this to happen in this room). He navigated the room very well, was very stable in walking, and very confident in his abilities. There was one time that Andrew was in the big play crib, and when I walked near the crib, he felt my presence (or perhaps he could see me), and he walked around the edge of the crib until he got to me. I patted him and he smiled from ear to ear. I had to stop touching him because the nannies on duty that day didn’t want me near the children, and when I walked away, he just cried and cried. It broke my heart. He’s a precious little boy in desperate need of rescue.

Eric

Guardian Angel

Boy, born Dec 2008

Eric is a smiley little fellow who likes to feel his caretaker’s heartbeat or pulse, because it comforts him. He would be a wonderful little brother in a household of older children.

Eric has arthrogryposis and compensated hydrocephalus. He has had a surgical repair of spina bifada. Overall, he is healthy and would do well in a family without smaller children. His upper body is quite strong and he has full use of his hands, fingers and arms, but he has little control or movement in his lower limbs and they are significantly smaller than his upper body. He can squeeze very tightly with his hands, and reach a full arm’s length with no problems even though his resting position is the one you see in the pictures. He does not talk, according to the caretakers but does make sounds to communicate. Cognitively, he has significant delays due to his history of spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He is very much still an infant in many ways.

The picture in the orange shirt was taken at age 18 months, and the second picture was taken at 3 years old. He may have a sister a few years older in a different region who possibly could also be available for adoption or he could be adopted separately. She also has special needs.
