HIV is a virus that claims many innocent lives when children do not have access to antiretroviral medications. Fortunately, it is treatable and the children who have access to medication and adhere to their treatment can live indefinitely without developing AIDS and can live long and full lives. HIV is now considered a chronic but manageable disease, even easier to treat than pediatric diabetes.

HIV can NOT be spread through casual/household contact. HIV is not spread through hugging, kissing, shaking hands, sharing toys, sneezing, coughing, sharing food, sharing drinks, bathing, swimming or any other casual way. It has been proven that HIV and AIDS can only be spread through sexual contact, birth, breastfeeding and intravenously (such as used needles and blood transfusions).

Children born to women with the virus have a chance of becoming HIV positive due to mother-to-child-transmission. These children are innocent carriers of the virus. The children you see below are currently living in institutions. Sadly, if they end up aging out of institutional life, there is a high likelihood they will be ill on the streets in a life of crime.

Recent laws in the US and Canada allow for these children to be adopted. Being in a loving family helps them access medical care and gives them the opportunity to have a normal, healthy, productive life. They can go to college, get married, give birth to healthy babies and live long enough to meet their grandchildren.

Here is an overview of the medical aspects of living with a child with HIV.

Deric L24

boysillouettenophotoBoy, 5 years old
HIV, Thrombocytopenia (a blood clotting disorder)

Listed: February 24, 2016

This adorable sweet boy is doing well with his medication regime. He has weekly blood tests for the Thrombocytopenia. He takes meds twice a day for HIV. His levels are now normal and the virus is apparently undetectable. He has those blood tests every 2 wks. He likes swimming (he can swim underwater), building with blocks, and playing with cars. This child is naïve, very trusting, and has no fear of strangers. He is good with other kids, but timid & afraid of rough/big kids. There are no limitations on his activity due to his health. He can run, jump, and swim. He uses knee pads & a helmet when riding a bike in order to prevent injury. He is a gentle boy who use to cry often but he has gotten much better and more confident. He had some significant issues with decay in his front teeth; he saw the dentist in fall 2015 and had his teeth fixed.   Now that his teeth are no longer a source of constant infection, his platelet levels have dropped within normal range!

He lives with a foster mother who works very hard to prepare her foster children for adoption.

Cody and Caren

[pullquote]From a family who met Cody spring 2014:  we were able to spend a good amount of time with him. He was delightful! He loved holding our hands when we went for walks outside, and he loved playing ball with my husband. He seemed healthy, smart, well-behaved, and kind to the other kids. We often saw him acting kind of like a big brother, helping some of the others with things like zipping their jackets. I think he would do great in a family with other kids. We were sad to say goodbye to him, and he asked us when his mom and dad were coming.[/pullquote]CodycarenBoy, born 2007 and girl born 2013

Cody:  Mild mental delay, Atrial septal defect, HIV disease resulting in encephalopathy, Hypertrophy of tonsils

Caren:  HIV

They must be adopted together. She is in a different orphanage because of her age, but in the same region, pretty close to each other. It will be the same court for both children.

He changed 3 orphanages already and this summer he will be transferred again because of his school age; he is scheduled to be transferred before school starts in September. Where is he going is NOT good! He needs OUT!! He is a very good and friendly boy and needs a family asap!
