Down Syndrome, 6-9 Girls

Reece’s Rainbow is dedicated to rescuing orphans abroad with Down syndrome. The ugly truth of the matter is that once these children reach a certain age, especially growing up in institutional/orphanage settings, they get to a point where they are no longer likely to be adopted. Effective September 1, 2011, all older children will be able to carry their grants as they grow (until they turn 10), instead of being combined in a general older child fund.

You are also invited to send a check (no Paypal fees) to Reece’s Rainbow, PO Box 4024, Gaithersburg, MD 20885

“Your gift will serve ALL of the children, as 10% of each waiting child donation is shared with our Voice of Hope fund as well!

Gemma

C-KB
Girl, born February 2006
Down syndrome

At the age of 2 years, Gemma was sent to a foster family.  She learned to walk, likes to ride children’s slide.  At the age of 3 years, she can eat with a spoon and cooperate when dressing.  At the age of 4 years, she received education in a kindergarten near the institute. Under the guidance of the teacher there, she has improved much in language and can say phases of 3-4 words like “I want to be cool” and “I want a car.”  At the age of 5 years, she likes to imitate adults.  Now with the increasing of age and knowledge, she does well in other aspects but is a little delayed in mental development due to Down syndrome. She can use mandarin and Hakka to express her needs or wills. She can basically take care of herself. She has learned to take on or off clothes and shoes. She can point out her five sense organs and she is a very good child.

Gemma is active, outgoing and lovely.  She likes to be with familiars and likes to be cuddled and play with toys or games. Sometimes, she would be tender. Like if she is not happy, she would cry. But she would calm down after comforting or being alone for a while. If you give her little snacks, she would be very happy. When she is happy, she would share food and toys with other children. But when she is naughty, she would also rob other children of their toys. She gets on well with other children and everyone adores her and we hope she would have her own family as soon as possible.

Anjelica

Girl, Born 2003

Anjelica was half-orphaned by her mother who died of heart attack. She was then cared for by her maternal grandmother who later died due to old age. With the latter's death, the custody of Anjelica went to her maternal grandmother's brother and sister-in-law, who subsequently referred her to the orphanage considering that they are also old with no sufficient income. While at the orphanage Anjelica's father appeared and signed the deed of voluntary commitment relinquishing Anjelica to the care of the state. Anjelica's father claimed incapability to provide for the child's needs.

In 2007, Anjelica was diagnosed with congenital heart disease and ventricular septal defect. She also had TB in the same year. She was also as born with Down syndrome.

Anjelica is undernourished and is continually provided with Pediasure milk twice a day to supplement her food intake and improve her weight. She measures 85 centimeters in height and weighs 9.2 kilograms. Due to her congenital heart disease-ventricular septal defect, Anjelica takes lanoxin, aldactone, and furosemide.

At her age she can sit, stand alone for several minutes and make 3 to 5 steps without assistance. She can walk sideways holding on to the rails but most of the time she prefers to crawl than walk. She can hold objects and make actions like clapping, waving good-bye, and do flying kisses to familiar persons. She knows her name and understands simple instructions. She can also feed herself with snacks and drinks in a training cup without assistance. She can say bi-syllable words and uses body language or gestures to communicate what she wants. She easily cries if she does not get what she wants but is easily pacified. She is not yet toilet trained and needs assistance from her caregivers.

Anjelica enjoys and dances to music. She also loves playing with toys and participates in the activities provided by her caregivers. She is also comfortable even with strangers. Anjelica was referred to the Philippine Heart Center and is still under observation by her pediatric-cardiologist.

Kennedy 2H

Girl, Born February 2005
Eyes: Gray
Hair: Dark
Character: sociable

HELP!  I HAVE ALREADY BEEN TRANSFERRED!

Kennedy is a very sociable girl and an active player. She is strong and likes all kinds of sports activities provided to children by the orphanage. Also she is musical. Though she doesn't talk yet she totally understands what the others say to her. She has good everyday skills (can put on and take off her clothes, can wash her hands and face, is toilet trained and uses it when she needs it, she eats by herself).   Kennedy   Kennedy will really benefit from having a loving family to encourage her, provide her with the therapies she needs, and help her be all she can be!   There is no place for her in her country.

At the moment of the child's birth the mother was 27 y.o.,she  abused drugs, had hepatitis B and C.   Kennedy's birth weight was 3,300 gr, her birth length was 51 cm. APGAR 7/8  Down Syndrome was revealed and confirmed right after the girl was born.   Her present diagnosis:  Down syndrome, significant speech retardation, delay in growth, moderate mental deficiency, congenital heart disease, planovalgus deformity (flat feet), atopic dermatitis (dry cheeks), hypermetropia of the both eyes of medium degree.

Tania (50)

Girl, born August 2002.

She is said to be independant and active, and she especially loves to swing.  She is shy with other children, and seeks attention from adults, cuddling up when hugs and affection are available.

From her medical records:  Down syndrome, esotropia, flatfoot, secondary  cardiomyopathy.

From a missionary who visited with her in March 2012:  One time the care giver made her sit with other children she was so desperate for me all to herself shecried! she really didnt want to share me.   This is seriously one child who wants a Mama!   She seemed so bright, there is so much potential here being wasted.   She whacked the other children to keep them away from me but I could tell she was not an aggressive child.  Tania is fiesty and able and just desperate for love!  I loved her!!!   I wanted to bring her and Katarina home.  Tania is always active and she loves playing with her swing set, unlike the other kids who rather just play with their toys. The child is a bit shy around the children of her age.  However, she is very brave and courageous when dealing with new visitors.  The girl suffers from a lack of motherly care and gentleness, so she is attracted to everyone who is nice and kind to her.   She hides her lonely soul behind the wall of her active and independent lifestyle.   But as soon as she receives a warm hug and a little love, the mischievous girl suddenly becomes docile and calm.

Larger families, older parents welcome.  Travel required.   This region does often waive the 10-day waiting period!

Mabel

Girl, born May 2005
Diagnosis:  Down syndrome

Mabel is a very shy, calm natured little girl.  Right now, she does not appear to be walking at all.  In the pictures, she had been brought in from another groupa and was in an unfamiliar place, so she was a little nervous in a new environment.  Sadly, in the orphanage at this time, she is unable to get any therapy.  Imagine her potential and what she could do if she was getting physical, occupational and speech therapy!  Mabel truly needs someone to adopt her soon, and help her become all that God has intended for her to be!

Poor, sad little Mabel — she’s been chewing on her sleeves and hands for self-soothing.   She’s such a tiny little bird — please help her find a family so she can reach her full potential!  She has the most beautiful eyes, let’s help put the shine back in them!

MABEL can stand for “Mothers Always Bring Extra Love,” and if ever a child needed extra love, it is this precious girl.  She has no one to love on her- so she’s chewing on her hands and sleeves. Her little hands look raw. What a horrible way to have to comfort yourself- to just be a darling baby and no one love on you because you happen to have an extra chromosome.  She’s tiny, no bigger than a 3 year old. Her cheeks are raw, from her having her wet hands against them, and the cool air of winter hitting them.  Somewhere, this child has a mom that will bring “extra love” for this precious child of God with an “extra chromosome”. Mama? Do you see me?

Additional pictures available.   Interested families should be homestudy approved (or close to it) prior to commitment.  Large families welcome, older parents welcome, married couples only.   Travel required.
