Janie (26)

Janie  (26)

Girl, Born March 8, 2006

So glad to have an updated picture of Janie!  She is blessed to still be at the baby house, but she will remain bedridden for the rest of her life is she is transferred.
Janie is a beautiful little girl who struggles with the effects of FAS.    She also has CP and some effects of hydrocephaly.   She is not able to walk on her own, and will need the loving and patient care of a family to help her achieve her potential.

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.

Noel

Girl, Born October 2004

Oh, Noel!  ;((  Noel was born with hydrocephaly and severe CP.   She has had surgery and has a shunt for her hydrocephalus, but she is still just "existing" for right now.  She is blessed to still be at the baby house….the director can't bear to send her on.

There is no way to know her potential until she is out of an orphanage and in her own family setting.  She will likely require 24 hour care.   But she deserves a family of her own!

Because of her severe special needs, any family considering a commitment for Noel should be home study approved and have experience caring for a child with these significant needs.

Victoria

Guardian Angel

Girl, Born December 12, 2002

I can’t wait to see Victoria with long, flowing hair!
Miss Victoria was born arthrogryposis, which only appears to affect her legs/feet.   She has a glowing personality and is a caregiver favorite.    Will be wonderful to see her, after surgery and therapy, walking on her own!!   If she is not adopted, she will spend the rest of her life bedridden.
From her medical records:  congenital arthrogryposis, divergent squint.
From our facilitator:   Victoria is happy and affectionate.  She loves to play with her dolls and to pretend to be mommy.  She is a very pretty girl.  She is a rather smart girl, the care-givers love her. She cannot support herself and needs assistance. She does not walk but she is a very active girl.  She is moving herself somehow, using mostly her hands.
As with all children living in these difficult conditions,  this child’s cognitive development has regressed significantly since he/she was younger.  It is of crucial importance that any family considering the adoption of an older child from the mental institution setting be well prepared for what to expect with regards to how the neglect and lack of adequate medical care and nourishment has affected this child.    These children all have TREMENDOUS potential for improvement, and deserve to have a life outside these four walls.
These children are truly living on borrowed time, and families should be home study approved before an official commitment can be made for this child.

Valerie

Girl, Born February 16, 2004

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Isn't Valerie cute??  She is diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  She also has strabismus (crossed/lazy eyes).    She is diagnosed with developmental delay, and shows many of the facial characteristics of a child with FAS (Fetal Alcohol syndrome).  But she is a darling girl, very active, loving and affectionate!   She is facing the institution soon.  I hope a family is out there waiting just for her!

Sweet carrot-top Margaret!  This little one has so much life in her, but she is destined to be bedridden the rest of her life if she is not adopted.

Natalia

Girl, Born March 6, 2003

YAY, a new photo of Natalia!!   Natalia is a GORGEOUS little girl with brown hair and giant blue eyes.   She is 6 years old.   She is a very smart little girl, but her medical records show cognitive delay and some epileptic issues.   Her seizures are infrequent, and she does take medication to control it.   Her cognitive delay is likely a result of the seizures though.   She also has some strabismus (crossed/lazy eye), but this can be corrected in the US.  Natalia does show many facial features of FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome), although this is not listed in her medical records.

Natalia is able to speak, and when our missionary asked her if she would tell us something , she was trying to rehearse a little poem!  Natalia is not able to walk on her own.  She is carried everywhere.   The staff there tell us that she once broke her leg/hip, and it was not set/casted properly, so it is deformed now.    Not sure this is the entire extent of her needs, but regardless, she is a very nice little girl, happy and friendly and beautiful.   She will truly thrive in a family environment.

What a stunning, happy little girl!  Berkeley has long blonde hair and beautiful brown eyes.    She was born with clubbed feet, but is able to walk holding on to a fence or hands or the wall.  She is very determined and tries to do everything on her own.  Surgery and therapy could change this little girl's life!

Berkeley does have strabismus (crossed eye), her records indicate hydrocephaly, but she certainly seems to be doing fine and not showing any signs of cognitive difficulty from that.  She also has hypoplasia of her right kidney.

From her medical records:  The girl had spinal hernia like,  the hernia was successfully operated, that is why the girl can walk now.   As the result of that hernia the girl has incontinence of urine.   Hydrocephaly.   She has shunt in the brain which should be there for few more years.   She is very kind and loving and has lots of friends. "

Lexi (L)

has siblings (not available for adoption)
FAS; Mixed specific developmental delays; short-stature; strabismus; hypertrophy; flat-foot; repaired hernia.

Lexi was born prematurely at 34 weeks gestation weighing 1530g. She has had trouble gaining weight. She has a history of bronchitis and otitis. She started walking at the age of 2. In March 2011 she weighed 15kg and was 103cm tall. Delay of speech comprehension, expressive speech, general motor, audio attention memory, and visual attention memory. Suzy

C-W
Girl, born 2005

Suzy is an outgoing little girl who enjoys playing games with other children. The other children at her institute like her very much and she is very good at socializing. Suzy was born with ichthyosis, a skin disease that covers her entire body. The orphanage staff treats her ichthyosis with ointment once a day. Her skin itches due to her condition and her caregivers say that it also makes her “afraid” of the sun. In the wintertime, the condition tends to worsen. When we asked how her condition affected her in other ways, the nannies said that in the past her gait has been abnormal, but now it is better although she still can’t run as fast as the other children. She is described as a talkative girl who speaks well and speaks a lot.

She is able to walk with one foot in front of the other, stand on one foot, and she is able to name animals and know what their sounds and behaviors were. The orphanage staff say that they haven’t sent her to school yet because she is too young, but she appears to be on target and able to complete tasks that other 5 year olds can do. She is able to do basic self-care tasks such as toileting, washing her hands, and dressing herself. What she could really use is a family who could give her the love and care that she needs and who would help her get appropriate treatment for her skin condition.

There is a total of $9800 in financial aid (made up of a $4,200 Promise Child grant for eligible families for this adoption and a $5600 waiver for the orphanage fee) — details available through the agency.

Winnie is a very sweet girl.  She is always smiling and is very outgoing. The nannies love her because she is an excellent helper! Cleaning the table, mopping the floor, making beds, folding clothes and feeding babies are all fun and games for Winnie. She has a little humpback (a frontward curving of the spine that causes a bowing of the back), but it is said to not be too serious. Winnie walks very well, although occasionally she is a little unsteady. She expresses herself well but has difficulty articulating some of her words.

Autumn

Guardian Angel

Girl, born March 2004
Diagnosis:  deformity of lower limbs, cognitive delay
C-KB

She is introverted and quiet. She likes to play with adults and likes to listen to people talking and likes being talked to even more. If you get familiar with her and you talk to her, she would ask you many questions. She can walk with hand on support and she can stand for several seconds. Taught by staff, she can say sentences of 3-5 words and she knows the function of daily utilities. If you ask her what her name is, she can tell you.  She is cooperative when nannies put on clothes for her. She can take off clothes and unbutton; she can hold the bowl and feed herself and she can drink from a cup. She can read a picture book and can turn page after page. She can play blocks by herself and can make buildings with blocks. She is very polite and when she sees staffs here she would call them dad and mama, or aunty and uncle for younger ones. She sings to the younger children, songs she has learned. She likes most to sing the “Mama hao” (good mother) song. She likes read picture books very much and she likes clothes and dresses in bright colors. She cleans her face and hands every morning. She can keep her clothes neat and clean even after one or two days.

She is a good girl and she learns hard. We all like her and wish her happiness.

Isn't she lovely?  Cate is said to be a very nice girl who desperately needs a family.
Cate has heart issues, and her diagnoses are as follows:  discordant atrioventricular junction, corrigent transposition of magistral vessels, coronary-left ventricle fistula, complete atrioventricular heart block

Cate does have some facial features of FAS, families considering her adoption should be educated on the spectrum effects of fetal alcohol syndrome and the challenges of adopting older children.

Iryna 8W

3l4g-8W

Girl, Born December 2003

An article from December 2006 states “Now urgent problem with one of our patients Iryna who is nearly 3 years old. She is HIV-positive but she does not need special treatment; the virus can sleep in her body for many years (slow progressor). It was disturbing her underlying disease – cerebral palsy and she needs a qualified neurological treatment which we cannot provide in our hospital. The children with this pathology go to the orphanage for children with central nervous system damage and mental disturbances (the mental institute). We are working in this direction but it’s hard to say how long the girl will be in our center. Frankly, we are scared to send the child to people suffering from phobias about HIV. It is excusable for an uneducated man, but should never be in health care workers. A year ago, she held her head badly, could not sit there and just not realized was smiling, but now she crawls, stands, leans on the barrier and is beginning to talk. The children at this hospital are loved, they are neatly dressed and well trimmed” (photo taken between August ’06-December ’06.)

Please be flexible if inquiring about the little girl Iryna mentioned in the article as we are somewhat sure this is her picture, yet there is a chance we may get a different photograph of her. We understand this is a leap of faith and are asking for an open and flexible family.

The hospital Iryna was in at the time the article was written seems to be a decent place, but we believe she has been transferred to the mental institute. It is our hope to find a special family very soon who can help with her HIV, CP and also with any emtional help she may need. Please help to find a family for this little girl. This is her only chance.

Look at Janna's long lovely fingers!

Janna has a congential anomaly of the brain.  Both pictures we have of her she is lying down — she desperately needs a family to rescue her.   Once she is transferred, she will likely be left in bed for the rest of her days.

There are many children in this orphanage who could be adopted together.

Sweet girl, I love her curly hair!  Olive is listed as having a mild-to-moderate mental delay.  She is small, about the size of a typical 4-year-old.    She has made  good developmental progress being in this orphanage.   Olive does show significant facial features of FAS, although this is not documented in her medical records.

URGENT:   This is a new orphanage for us to work with. These children are older, and will be transferred at the end of summer and it will be extremely hard to adopt them once they are transferred.

Erin

Girl, Born August 2002

Cerebral palsy (CP), spastic diplegia G 80;   pseudobulbar dysarthria; concomitant strabismus;  Mixed specific developmental disorders F 83

Erin is a very friendly, pretty girl who is hoping for a forever family.   Married couples only.

From a family who met her in Feb 2012:   Oh, Erin is my sweetheart! Seriously. She’s just adorable. Right now, she’s gone to another region, getting her leg braces adjusted after a growth spurt. She is very mobile. When we first met her, she was sitting in the floor putting her shoes on. She speaks some English and is in the highest level of classes they offer, which includes a foreign language option, so I know she must be very smart. This picture does NOT do her justice.

She is nine, nearly 10, and is like a thin 8 year old. She has personality like you would not believe, and is very polite and friendly. She was so helpful to us the first few days when we were new. Everyone really seemed to like her as well. Honestly if it weren’t for the fact that she had a Russian accent, Erin looks like any other American preteen. She would fit right into a family and school and church! Her diagnoses on paper seem pretty serious but in real life, they did not. Her CP did not appear severe; it primarily affected her ankles and feet from what we saw and it didn’t impair her mobility hardly at all. Her eyes had a mild pulling in of what appeared to be the left eye. I have no idea why they listed developmental disorders, because as I mentioned, she’s in the highest level of classes and is considered to be very smart.
