Sweet Cherie …. she needs a family desperately!

Picture on the left is from December 2012, on the right is from summer 2012.  Additional pictures available.

Guardian AngelCherie needs a family fast!  From her medical records:  congenital anomaly of the skull, feet and  hands. Cleft hard palate, UPU, LLC, aortic defect.  Hydrocephalus

UPDATE OCT 2014:
She was born end of 2009. She was born via c-section and a full term baby with Aperts Syndrome and Hydrocephalus. She has had multiple surgeries to include a separation of both her pinkies from her other fused fingers. She uses her hands and feet very well to get what she wants. She had a shunt placed for her hydro as well. Soon after her first surgery the shunt failed and after some time they did a second surgery. The surgery did not go well and a significant amount of brain damage was sustained and the second shunt was not able to be placed as a result of the damage. She also has difficulty with sight. Mostly though she threw any toy or object near her. She crawls and scoots to get around and does not speak but makes noises. She seems to know her name but does not make eye contact when her name is called. We were told she likes “baby toys”- things with bright lights, colors, noise, and also that she likes music. She is able to eat regular soft foods but is spoon fed, she is able to use a sippy cup. She currently spends most of her time in her stroller. We were told that she is developmentally around 18 months but we think more like 8-10 months from what we saw in 3 hours. She is a very sweet wonderful little girl who needs a family who can meet her needs and love her well.

Ethan

Ethan Oct 2013 (3)Ethan 2013Boy, born November 1999
HIV, astigmatism

Pics from 2013 – he wants to be adopted!

Ethan is in the same orphanage with several other available children. Interested and approved families could adopt multiple children together.

From a family who met him in Nov. & Dec. 2013:
Ethan is older than our daughter and so wasn’t in her group. However, he clearly enjoys interacting with the younger kids, and he came into her group room at least two or three evenings each week to play-wrestle and to play games/video games with the younger kids. We met him our first weekend with our daughter, when Ethan came outside for about 2 hours on Saturday to play with the younger kids. He impressed me immensely in that short amount of time. He was gentle and kind with them, laughing and joking. Not once did he display any mean or bullying behavior, which some of the other older boys did. He was very respectful and polite to my husband and me, as well as toward the teachers. That behavior continued every time we saw him for the next six weeks. He especially likes play wrestling with the younger boys, although he is always very gentle with them. Many times he would be play wrestling with one of the younger, much smaller boys, and I’d see him get to a position where he could have easily taken the play too far and hurt the younger boy, but not once did he do so. He always gently set down the younger boy with a big smile. As a result, he is a favorite with the younger boys. He’s also a bit goofy, in an understated way. For example, he likes to wear silly clothing combinations just to get a reaction from the other children. Once he was walking around with his skinny jeans rolled up his legs to look like shorts, but with huge gigantic cuffs. The other kids thought it was hilarious! Ethan told our daughter how much he wants a family. He will be a huge blessing and a wonderful addition to the family that chooses him.

Dillon

dillon2014-4dillon2014-1Boy, born 2000
Down syndrome

From a missionary who visited in August 2014:    Dillon loves cuddles and attention. He also loves getting his photo taken with other people, then takes his own “photos” with his hand. He grabs you and says “cheee” and takes a selfie with his hand. So adorable!  He has a killer laugh.  He is smart and helps out the caregivers.  He doesn’t speak but verbalizes sounds and makes his needs known. He will be a lovely son.

From a family who visited with him in 2014:  In all my interaction and time with Dillon, I never saw the slightest sign that he was aggressive or had the ability to hit children. In fact, out of all the boys there, Dillon is the most gentle, softhearted, and kind. I did see some horse play and pinching between the other boys, but never Dillon. Dillon is calm, extremely happy, and joyful, and very soft and slow with his movements.

From another family who met him:
He is beautiful! absolutely a treasure. a teddy bear my hubby says. When he first met me, he kissed my hand to say hello, and then he kissed (my husband’s) hand.  He has a beautiful smile! We visited him again later that night. He gave me a huge hug. He just wraps his arms around you very tight! He is quiet, but sat next to me and loves to spend time with you. Today, when we arrived and gave the kids cookies, he was so happy. We have a video where he sets down what he has in one hand just to say hello to the camera. He is full of smiles. When we left, I went up to him and he put the world’s hugest smile on his face and put his arms out in a straight “t”, armed and ready for a tight hug! An absolute treasure is the best way to describe him He is more than that.  He loves to play soccer. He runs and plays and laughs. He will be a huge blessing to a family! Also very gentle!

When we were able to talk to her she seemed slightly shy but very calm and gentle. Betsy is articulate and seems only slightly delayed. She and my daughter hugged and cried when they had to say good-bye. Betsy really wants to come to America. She would be a wonderful addition to any family!

He is one of my daughter’s really good friends. They hugged and cried when my daughter left the orphanage. Brock desperately needs a family to rescue him and give him a joyful life full of love.

Clarice

Clarice 2014 2 Clarice 2014Girl, born July 1999
Down syndrome

Clarice’s pictures are so fun to see – she seems to be all sunshine and motion!   She has such an amazing grin!

Clarice is so tiny; and she has many facial features of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, in addition to her Down syndrome.

She has the personality of an impetuous toddler- very high energy and eager to try everything life has to offer. She too needs a family, and the sooner the better. The possibilities for a child to thrive when they reach a family are endless. She will definitely need medical attention, as you can tell from just seeing her teeth, and lots of patient instruction and guidance.

Update from May 2014:
CClarice has a sunshine smile, twinkling eyes, and a unique set of needs, as she is the victim of at least one confirmed type of maternal substance abuse in addition to having Down Syndrome and scoliosis. She has spent the entirety of her almost-15 years of her life without the essential and nurturing maternal and paternal bond. She is a sweet-natured, not loud, strong, and curious child who is the size of a slender six year-old. She is cognitively about two years old. She IS able to obey the stern orphanage nannies, and enjoys massage, stroller rides, sensory activities if she is offered, joint stimulation, and can walk. Clarice can engage in purposeful play and follow basic instructions. She bear-crawls (think Jungle Book) many times, and really has a gentle disposition. Her eyes are innocent and kind, and her personality is gentle and sweet. It is not fair to expect a child in this condition to “perform” for a room full of adults, and she is enamored and thankful with any offers of play or stimulation. She has a self-stimming habit of pushing on her private parts under her underpants, but as I have learned in the DS community, this is probably a result of a lack of sensory input. So, if given the right redirection through sensory play, her habit could be redirected. Clarice has the strength of a man when she wants you to hold her, and it is my opinion that it is unsuitable for her to have several physically smaller siblings. However, that is not legislated. There are several telling videos and photos of Clarice to share for the right family. She needs a family ASAP! I was told by a national regarding the kind of place she goes next — that “most children live for only one year at most once transferred.” Please pray for precious Clarice. Could you love her as a daughter? God knows her name, and he will provide her needs.

Multiple congenital malformations, condition similar to CP.

Nevermind the pink — Easton is a boy!

Easton smiles, reacts to familiar adults, toys.  Look at that gorgeous smile — are those dimples?

From a family who met him in March 2014:

Easton is an incredibly cheerful little boy. The nannies told us that he is smart and talks with them, though we were also told that he is delayed. In fairness, Easton spends almost all of his time in a crib. He would either be sitting or laying when we saw him.

Easton always seemed to be very aware of what was happening around him. One day when a nanny was getting our son ready for his visit, we did a little dance behind her and Easton laughed. He would often smile brighter when we would wave at him across the room while picking up our son on our visits. I believe Easton would flourish in his own family.

Tessa (Lora)

Girl, born August 2008

We were recently informed LORA is actually Tessa!

What a little doll Tessa is!  She really needs a family — she has a whole host of medical issues.

Mental delay, rickets, strabismus (crossed eyes), epilepsy, and a speech delay. She does not talk at all.  She prefers to be alone.  Some of her behaviors remind autism but she was not diagnosed with it.  Her epilepsy is well controlled by medications.  It has been suggested that Tessa may have Angelman Syndrome, but this is not confirmed.

She is able to stand and walk independently. She does not have a diagnosis of CP but she walks unsteadily.   She was previously diagnosed with microcephaly.

She deserves a loving family and a chance to reach her potential, not to be hidden away in a mental institution.

Stephen

Stephen30421111111 (3)Guardian AngelBoy, born June 2006
Minimal brain dysfunction, pyramid insufficiency, secondary cardiomyopathy, anomalous chord of the left heart ventricle, hypermobility of hip joints, concomitant alternating convergent squint.

From a family who met him in late 2013:
Stephen was in Riley’s groupa.  We saw him a lot during our 7 weeks of visits.  He stood out because he’s 7 yo and taller than the other kids in his groupa of mostly 4-5 yo’s.  He is a SWEET, sweet boy.  He has a great smile with dimples.    He’s not overly active (not hyper).  Very obedient/cooperative and follows instructions and the flow of the groupa well.  An easy going kiddo.  He doesn’t seem to have very significant needs.  He functions very “typically”, maybe just mild delays.  One thing I’ll never forget about Stephen…  one time when we were invited to watch a performance the kids were putting on, we were one of the only people in the audience.  He stood there, singing and doing the body motions to the production just as well as could be.  He kept looking right at my husband and I like he was performing just for us.  He just seemed to love having someone be there for him and encourage him, and nod and smile and let him know he was doing a good job.  He was working so hard to do his best and he did so well!  It was sweet and sad all at the same time….knowing we weren’t his mama and papa and he didn’t have anyone there to give him that recognition forever, that he so appreciated.  He would make such a delightful son!  We would have brought him home too but were only homestudy approved for one boy.   He’s in a good orphanage that provides good care and services.  But who knows where he’ll be transferred to when they no longer have space for him (he’s already over age.)  I have pictures and video of him.  Such a kind, happy little boy….he needs a family!!!

Large families welcome; married couples only.

Kayla

Guardian Angel

Girl, born August 2007

Diagnosis info coming soon.

She cannot walk and her mental development is normal.

From a family who met her in late 2013:
Kayla is about the sweetest child you could ever imagine. She is full of smiles and giggles. We saw her everyday for several weeks and I was able to play with her a few times. We played a game in which I would hand her a block and she would put it into a bag. She loved it. 40303182538 Kayla (1)She prefers to use her left hand although if I’d put the block out of reach of her left hand she could use her right. She is constantly in a stroller. I never saw her anywhere else. I did notice she seemed to have good control over her legs. I bet she could walk with PT and some love! She is small for her age. She needs dental care now. She made good eye contact and watched what I was doing. I was able to give her simple instructions despite the language barrier and she followed them. I truly believe she would absolutely thrive in a family. And a family would be beyond blessed by her sweet little self.

Harley

Harley-2014Girl, born Jun 2000

Down syndrome

From one of our adoptive families who met her in August 2014:  ” Harley was so sweet and gentle.   She reached for my hands several times and is very aware of her surroundings. She is walking and just a gentle little love. However, she knows how to express her dislikes as well.   One of the other children was crowding her and she did not like it so she let her know in no uncertain terms that she was not pleased.  She really is a doll!”

From someone who met her in 2013:

It is so difficult to believe we celebrated Harley’s 13th birthday when we visited the orphanage. She’s so very tiny and still very much a baby. She is very loving and sweet. She clings to you when you hold her and always smiles when you bounce her up and down and tickle you. She doesn’t walk or talk, and is very limited. Harley is capable of walking with assistance and can take a few steps on her own if you push her hard enough! She can babble a little bit.

Harley walking

Update March 2014:
This little girl has spunk! She is now walking while holding hands with the nanny, and has opinions of her own about exactly who she will walk with and when she will do it. She may look like a 5 year old in size, but she has a ton of personality and independence! She seemed quite obedient, as they asked her to sit in her bed for a bit while they got her things together.

She doesn’t speak that I heard, but is very observant and watched everything that was going on. Her receptive language skills seem much better than her expressive ones, since she nodded and complied with everything they asked, even though she had just woken up and seemed a bit bleary eyed. The staff said she has a very good attention span. She is very cute – so tiny for her age- she looks just like a kindergartner, not a 14 year old.

Brayden

Brayden eating31209224312 (3)Boy, born September 2004
Mental delays; he does not talk. He is very active.

From someone who met him in 2013:
Brayden looks to be about 4 years old, not 9. He’s a very energetic and happy little boy. He would always run up to the missionaries. He is in the same groupa as Collier. He loved it when we went outside, and when the older boys swung him around. He also loved swinging on the bench swing and on one of the bouncy cars. He has some speech sounds, but it is very difficult to understand. Brayden is also very caring, and has the most infectious smile. I believe he would be a very good fit in a family.

Update March 2014:
He is a very enthusiastic and high energy little guy with obvious microcephaly. He spoke, but very minimally, and makes a lot of other noises- squeals and such. he is very assertive, especially when it comes to getting something he wants (like candy and fruit!) and seems to have poor proprioceptive input, and is unaware of how frequently he bounces into people and things lol (very common with FAS, and typically addressed through an improved sensory diet and occupational therapy, for more info, read about the Out of Sync Child). He seems like a sweet little boy.

Gideon

Gideon4 Gideon6Boy, born 2002
mental delays, cardiopathy and microcephaly

Every person – be it a child or an adult – wants to get attention and recognition. Gideon is not an exception: he speaks loudly so that adults couldn’t ignore him. He is persistent too. Once the goal is set, he tries to achieve it. He likes to interact with others and join the children in their activities: playing outside, drawing – if it’s what the other children do, or swinging even if there is already somebody on the swings.

However he can also play calmly on his own. He doesn’t like to draw or to paint for a long time but he tries to make the best piece of art he can. And of course if there is a chance to play in sand or to throw pebbles into seawater – this is the biggest fun for the energetic boy!

Gideon also likes to watch children’s movies and sing songs. And even if his singing is not perfect and sometimes you cannot make out some words, with his loud cheerful voice and a lively smile Gideon brings joy and genuineness into this world.

Additional pictures available.

Gideon has a matching grant of $100!  When his grant reaches $277.25, he will receive an additional $100!

Clayton and Caleb

31009173432 update 31009112817 UpdateTwin boys, born August 2010

Clayton has Cerebral palsy.
Caleb has been diagnosed with Flail legs, superior spastic paraplegia, focal symptomatic epilepsy.

Please help us find them a family, where they can grow up together and reach their full potential!

From someone who met them in 2013:
(Brother 1)  He is in with a much younger groupa. He goes outside twice daily when it is nice, and this orphanage does physical therapy five times a week. He makes eye contact, but is in his own little world until you talk directly to him. He appears kind of zoned out, and then I said his name and stroked his cheek and his whole body came to life, just longing to be touched and tickled. He arched his back and smiled, but I wasn’t allowed to pick him up. He has grown too long for his stroller. I put a velcro wrist rattle on him and he purposefully moved his left arm to interact with it immediately. He is well nourished there, but he will really need a mama’s touch to help him grow. His teeth look like they are in great shape. He uses his arms, but I did not see him move his legs, though he was certainly wiggling from one side to the other and is a kid who would really like to be on the move! He is not in the same groupa as his brother. Kids are generally grouped by what they are eating, and his brother was in the groupa for kids doing formula and purees. I think he may be on only formula still. It was so hard to leave him behind!

31009173432 G31009112817 B

(Brother 2)  Several days later, I saw who I thought was the same child in a different stroller, but the nannies corrected me when I called him by his brothers name, slowly communicating that this was his twin brother. They look SO much alike! The first day I saw him, he was badly in need of a diaper change and I showed the nannies. He was laying flat on his back in the outdoor playpen, and when I came back to return my daughter to the groupa, he was still there an hour later, unchanged in diaper and position. The next day I saw him, though, one of the sweet nannies was playing music on her ipod, and he was laying close to her in a stroller. Although he didn’t interact with the music, he was very quick to respond to my voice. The second I stopped talking, he stopped smiling and zoned out again. But, he was so responsive to touch and baby talk!  He pushed his body around in the stroller with his legs AND arms, and had a lot of good neck strength. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he is only being limited by the assumptions of his diagnosis. As we left our daughter’s groupa for the last time, we saw him being lovingly carried down to his physical therapy appointment. I think it was a sign of good things to come for these boys!

Neither boy is using meaningful speech, though both babble. Videos available. Wonderful region to adopt from, especially if one parent needs to stay alone for a time.

Luca

LucaBoy, born 2005
Autism

Luca is all boy!  He adores mechanical devices and toys, with any action involved.  He can spend a long time concentrating, studying the secrets of mechanics.  Most of the time he plays alone as it isn’t easy for him to interact with others. When he gets tired of talking he goes to a corner and sits there for a long time. There are not many chances for him to be alone at the orphanage.

Luca prefers routines; it’s hard for him to deal with changes in his surroundings. The usual routine, having the same people around and things in usual places create for him an illusion of steadiness and reliability in his world. It calms him down and gives him some confidence. Unfortunately, soon Luca will have to drastically change his life. But, it would be better for him if he gets used to a foster home than to the institution.

Although he is a thin boy, he likes to eat. His mood changes like the weather on a spring day. He could be crying one moment and the next moment laughing. Classes are not always interesting to him but. He appreciates when some adults help him with his homework.

Handsome Kelvin is 7 years old, and waiting for his family!

From a family who met him in June 2014:

40626124650 Philip (1)

This calm little guy came up to me with pleading eyes for attention and is just so polite. God has heard his prayers, and now he is listed for adoption! He is not overbearing or competitive at all. Rather, he is observant and inquisitive. He is about the size of a six year-old and just so gentle. I would take him home in a heartbeat if he was available before. He takes turns riding the red wagon around the orphanage grounds as the bigger boys pull him, and he gestures politely for fresh fruit when he sees it is available. He is kind to other children. He says a few words in his native language, and listened carefully when I was giving descriptions of my family photos. I have confidence that he would do wonderfully in any kind of family, and it is obvious– he can surely reciprocate love! He enjoyed throwing balls, going on walks, playing see-saw, and listening to English descriptions. Whoever adopts this little love will be so blessed to call him a beloved son.

URGENT!  CHANTELLE IS FACING TRANSFER

Sweet Chantelle has a list of diagnoses, but her main need is a loving family!   A family could help her reach her potential and save her from a life in a crib.

From a family who met her in fall 2013:
Chantelle is mostly kept in a laying room although I did seen her out in the main groupa room laying down in a gated play area. I believe she can roll around. I saw her holding things in her hands as well. She has a calm, sweet spirit and I had her smiling in the first minute of seeing her. I touched her precious little face and told her I loved her and she smiled. The other kids seem to love her and they liked going into the laying room to take pictures of her with me.  Chantelle so needs a family now! She won’t be kept at the baby house much longer. She is soooo beautiful, the pictures really don’t do her justice.
