From an adoptive family in summer 2012:
We saw Denis three different times at large group events at this orphanage, and he is a very cute little boy. He is small for his age, and he was in a wheelchair the times I saw him (that may have been just for transport). But he was alert and following what was going on (a puppet show once, and a musical performance another time) with real interest.  He looked content and in a good mood every time we saw him.

This region typically waives the 10 day waiting period for children with special needs.

Update March 2014:
Denis is a very handsome little guy. He is nonverbal, but makes a high trilling/singing sound or squeals when he is happy or trying to communicate. He looks like he is about the size of a 4 year old, however his abdomen is quite large (barrel shaped) while his arms and legs and hands are very thin and tiny. He is in a wheelchair and does not walk. His little body shakes often, from his head to his toes, which may be seizure activity. He’s very alert and watches what goes on, but does not appear very interested in interacting with people specifically. He is in a room with many other older, more mobile boys, so he may simply feel overwhelmed with the activity and constant movement.

Kristie

Kristie (1)Girl, Born 2001
Kristie was born with Klippel Feil syndrome, as kyphosis and 6 of her vertebrates are fused together.   Despite this, she is completely mobile and totally functional/self sufficient.  She is also of typical development cognitively.  Kristie’s older sister was recently adopted into another family (separated legally), so Kristie is still waiting for her own “forever family”.

Kristina, on the right:  cognitively delayed, physically capable, helpful, friendly, likes to play, good girl.
The girls are currently NOT in the same orphanage, but are in the same region and we could love for them to be adopted together.

Alicia

alicia6Girl, Born 2004

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!  ALICIA HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED.

SO THANKFUL FOR A NEW PIC OF ALICIA!!   Miss Alicia is a beautiful little girl who needs a loving family.  Her other two typically developing sisters were adopted by other families already.

Alicia was born to an HIV+ mother, and is HIV+ herself.  She has also has significant delays and challenges associated with her FAS.  (fetal alcohol syndrome).  We are waiting to learn if she has any medical complications, but she is cognitively delayed and does show signs of attention deficit and hyperactivity.    Alicia will do best where she can be the focus of attention and have her Daddy wrapped around her finger :)     Alicia has SO much potential, and deserves a family as much as her other sisters do.   I know there is a family out there for this little girl!  She is facing the mental institution soon, but has grown up in a loving and well kept orphanage so far.  A committed family now can prevent her transfer!

From an adoptive family who visited with her in July 2010:  “ Alicia absolutely LOVES one on one attention. she is front and center if you are handing out kisses and hugs. You can see she wants a Mama all her own, and it will be so hard on her to have her sister leave to be adopted, as her other sister was already adopted.   (Their mother is deceased, most likely from AIDS).   She likes to swing.   She loved to lay her head in my lap while we were both on the bench swing and I would stroke her hair. The other kids didnt like to share my attention but Alicia was ok with it.   I could have two in my lap and she didn’t mind, but she didnt like being crowded out when the other child decided they wanted me all to themselves.  She likes sensory input.   She kept rubbing her arm across my husband’s unshaved face and shivering and making the funniest face and then immediately doing it again.  She likes to go down the slide again and again.   She really likes to be in the  middle of whatever is going on, and be included. But often she is excluded, even by attendants.  For Alicia it’s a vicious circle. She is delayed, she gets frustrated, they don’t let her do things the others are doing, she gets more delayed and more frustrated. She is VERY VERY SWEET AND LOVING.  She needs a family that has only a couple kids, not ten. She has HIV.   If you want a little girl to hug and kiss, she will GLADLY take all the hugs and kisses you can hand out. She isn’t afraid of men but isn’t inappropriate either. I saw her with my husband as well as another couple of young men who visit regularly.  Alicia is on the small side, like maybe size 4.  The children are valued and loved at this orphanage.   The grounds are visually stimulating and the kids get outside for a couple hours in the morning as well as afternoon.   They even go swimming in the pool they have there.   Hope someone will come for Alicia very soon!”   Alicia is toilet-trained and able to say when she needs to use the restroom.  She has tremendous potential if someone would take her home and love her!

Kiersten

Guardian Angel
Girl, Born April 1, 2000

ALIVE and WAITING!

A question was raised about whether Kiersten had passed away, but this photo was taken March 14, 2012 ;) She still needs a family!

Isn’t Kiersten beautiful? She is 12 years old but is still very much a toddler. She is not able to walk on her own. There is nothing in her medical records to indicate why she is so delayed, and she does not show obvious facial features of FAS…her needs are quite unknown.

From her medical records: significant mental delay, congenital hypothyroidism

As with all children living in these difficult conditions, this child’s cognitive development has regressed significantly since he/she was younger. It is of crucial importance that any family considering the adoption of an older child from the mental institution setting be well prepared for what to expect with regards to how the neglect and lack of adequate medical care and nourishment has affected this child. These children all have TREMENDOUS potential for improvement, and deserve to have a life outside these four walls.

Valerie

Girl, Born February 2004

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!  Valerie has been transferred.

Isn’t Valerie cute??  She is diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  She also has strabismus (crossed/lazy eyes).    She is diagnosed with developmental delay, and shows many of the facial characteristics of a child with FAS (Fetal Alcohol syndrome).  But she is a darling girl, very active, loving and affectionate!   She is facing the institution soon.  I hope a family is out there waiting just for her!

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.

Donations will be accepted for this child when further information is received.

Justine

Girl, Born June 11, 2001

Alisha was born with Penn-Sjogren Syndrome.     We do not have any other info indicating why she may be cognitively and physically delayed.  She has cognitive delays, and a divergent squint.

Update 2012:
Little Miss Alisha’s eyesight has regressed significantly.  She needs a family!
She can’t move by herself but she tries to sit. Her speech is not developed. Mental processes are not formed. Ideation is not developed.  Alisha is friendly and quiet. Her emotional world is poor.  She needs care constantly.

Update June 2013:
Look how good she looks! When I saw her she was sitting on the floor with another child, and she reached out and tugged on my pant leg almost like “look at me!”  I said her name, and she gave me a big grin.

Chrystyna

Chrystyna 2013

Guardian AngelGirl, Born Jan 17, 2002

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Chrystyna is a beautiful, brown haired, brown eyed girl who deserves a chance at a better life!  Her official orphanage papers say she has developmental delays/difficulties from birth, but nothing more specific than that.  It is possible she has FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome).  Her biological mother  was deprived her parental rights in December 2004, and the biological father is not known.  Chrystyna has so much potential, and will be a precious gift to any family who adopts her.

Chrystyna is already living in an institution, so we need a family for her right away!

Chrystyna does have a sister, Karen.   Karen does not have any diagnosed special needs.   If you are interested in adopting both girls, you can do so, or Chrystyna is free to be adopted separately.   Please inquire!

UPDATE:  God has been watching Chrystyna.  She was recently transferred out of the institution into a wonderful facility, where they teach these children, work with them, and they appear very well cared for.  The difference in the few girls who were transferred OUT of the institution is incredible!   Please give these girls a second chance for a loving family!

From a family who met her, Sept 2012:
She is getting settled into her new environment. She seems to be very comfortable in her groupa. She is very beautiful and still has a lot of potential.  She deserves a chance!

From someone who met her, June 2013:
During the music performance, she was constantly stimming really fast (like it looks like she is being fast forwarded) and after they finished she was taken out by a nanny. Not sure what is going on with her;  If interested families want to see the videos they are welcome to! I know a family tried to take pictures of her last year but couldn’t get a good one because she moved so much!

This picture makes him seem to have vision problems, but I think it’s just a bad picture.

He is diagnosed with hydrocephaly, but this is a result of the FAS. He is not in need of a shunt to correct (the doctors say).

As you can see from this updated picture, Kenneth is doing GREAT! He wants a mama and papa of his own.

Jason

Jason (1)Boy, Born April 10, 2003

HELP!  I have been transferred to a remote institution, with no hope of finding my family without you!

Jason spends his time either in a crib or in a stroller, sitting outside.

He needs a lot of love and attention … He is a good, sweet child, but he has a lot of self-injuring behaviors.  Unfortunately, he is often restrained because he hits himself really hard.

Update Nov 2012:  Jason is learning to walk with support!

From a  family who visited with him in June 2013:   I saw Jason this morning. I got to take him for a walk in the stroller, play with him, feed him (twice!), and get him ready for his nap. He is wonderful. He loved it when I made my hand crawl up his belly and tickle him under the chin. I was rewarded with loud laughing and a huge smile. He liked to have me rub his feet, and whenever I would stop he would stick his little foot up for more. He makes noises but he does not talk. He can walk if he holds both of your hands, but he prefers to crawl as he can go faster. He is the king of the bouncy seat. He sits in it whenever he can, and he shooed away another child who came too close. ;) He is about the size of a four year old and is in a 4/5 shirt. He’s heavier than I thought he would be, but I can carry him easily. I’m totally in love.

10 day wait often waived here.  Married couples only, larger families welcome.

Please give this little guy a chance to fulfill his potential!    One of our own adoptive families who visited with him in March 2008 shared this with us:  “This little guy did NOT want to be photographed!  He was quite happy doing whatever he was doing before being brought into the room but having his picture taken was not high on his priority list.  He has “deep mental delay” (understand that this is according to Eastern European standards — he was more aware and alert than a child with Down syndrome might be at the same age).  I can’t tell you his eye color because he down-right refused to look at me, but those blonde curls sure were cute!”

Ruslan

Boy, Born November 12, 2002

Down syndrome

ALREADY TRANSFERRED, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Ruslan is a handsome young man who is in desperate need of a family right away.  He has strabismus, and is also a CARRIER of Hepatitis B.  (www.webmd.com) He is asymptomatic at this time.   We are trying to get more details on his Hep B….he is living in the general population of children, so they don’t appear to be very concerned about him transmitting it to other children.   (Typically, children with blood-born viruses such as Hep B and HIV are isolated in special orphanages and never available to be adopted, so we are thinking that maybe he tested positive at birth and hasn’t been retested, or he isn’t showing any outwards symptoms).

From a nurse in the infectious disease unit in a pediatric hospital:  *** Hepatitis B is something that children in the USA are routinely vaccinated for.   If parents have not received the vaccinations, they can easily go to their physician and receive the series.  With these vaccinations transmission is extremely minimal as vaccinated parties can have immunity to Hepatitis B. Titers (simple blood test) can also be drawn after taking the vaccines to make sure immunity has been acquired. Hepatitis B is also treatable with medications and people can also just be carriers of the virus.  This health condition is labeled chronic, but with proper medical treatment and simple precautions it is very treatable and the risk of transmission is minimal at most. ***

Ruslan has already been transferred out to the institution due to his age, but he can still be adopted!!    Please open you heart to little Ruslan….he needs you!

Vlad

Boy, Born September 1999
HIV

From our facilitator who has visited with him: Vlad is very healthy and has the most striking green eyes! His life story is very typical. The boy doesn’t have brothers and sisters, the mother died. Super boy. Physically developed perfectly well. By the fact very healthy, practically never ill. He is very fond of English, reads children stories without a dictionary, speaks good English. The boy is very communicative, always optimistic. He is very supportive with friends and very polite and obedient with the teachers and caregivers. Dreams about obtaining a family.

***Vlad is also an OLDER CHILD, and will have no opportunities if he ages out. His “orphan and HIV status” will follow him the rest of her life. Please give Vlad a chance to grow up knowing the love of a family and having basic the opportunities that he deserves. ***

Irina

Irina2012
Girl, Born March 5, 2005

Irina is a beautiful girl with dark hair and big dark eyes. She has a cleft palate. She is cognitively delayed, likely as a result of FAS. She is a precious and happy little girl, and will do great in a family. She can be *assertive* at times, but responds very well to individual attention and will really thrive as the “baby”.

Irina is a child who keeps to herself. Usually, if she plays with others, she prefers to stay in small groups, but she also can be okay with larger groups of children.   She prefers playing with children younger than she is.   Irina is a good listener and is a sweet and sensitive child.

Irina has been transferred to the older child internat now.  She is with Juri and Jefferson.

HELP! I HAVE ALREADY BEEN TRANSFERRED!

Daniel is facing a bedridden life in the mental institution without your help!   Poor Daniel struggles with many health complications, but he can truly reach his full potential with a loving family.  He has CP and hydrocephalus, along with some symptoms of epilepsy.

From his medical records:  congenital hydrocephalus, spastic tetraparesis, movement disorders, symptomatic epilepsy, severe mental delay, partial optic atrophy.

Jared

Jared (26)

BOY, born May 1, 2007

This handsome young man, with dark hair and dark eyes, was born with a rare genetic condition called Stickler Syndrome.  His medical records also indicate microcephaly, a common symptom of SS.

Individuals with Stickler syndrome experience a range of signs and symptoms. Some people have no signs and symptoms; others have some or all of the features described below. In addition, each feature of this syndrome may vary from subtle to severe.

A characteristic feature of Stickler syndrome is a somewhat flattened facial appearance. This is caused by underdeveloped bones in the middle of the face, including the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose. A particular group of physical features, called the Pierre Robin sequence, is common in children with Stickler syndrome. Robin sequence includes a U-shaped or sometimes V-shaped cleft palate (an opening in the roof of the mouth) with a tongue that is too large for the space formed by the small lower jaw. Children with a cleft palate are also prone to ear infections and occasionally swallowing difficulties.

Many people with Stickler syndrome are very nearsighted (described as having high myopia) because of the shape of the eye. People with eye involvement are prone to increased pressure within the eye (ocular hypertension) which could lead to glaucoma and tearing or detachment of the light-sensitive retina of the eye (retinal detachment). Cataract may also present as an ocular complication associated with Stickler’s Syndrome. The jelly-like substance within the eye (the vitreous humour) has a distinctive appearance in the types of Stickler syndrome associated with the COL2A1 and COL11A1 genes. As a result regular appointments to a specialist ophthalmologist are advised. The type of Stickler syndrome associated with the COL11A2 gene does not affect the eye.

People with this syndrome have problems that affect things other than the eyes and ears. Arthritis, abnormality to ends of long bones, vertebrae abnormality, curvature of the spine, scoliosis, joint pain, and double jointedness are all problems that can occur in the bones and joints. Physical characteristics of people with Stickler can include flat cheeks, flat nasal bridge, small upper jaw, pronounced upper lip groove, small lower jaw, and palate abnormalities, these tend to lessen with age and normal growth and palate abnormalities can be treated with routine surgery.

Another sign of Stickler syndrome is mild to severe hearing loss that, for some people, may be progressive (see hearing loss with craniofacial syndromes). The joints of affected children and young adults may be very flexible (hypermobile). Arthritis often appears at an early age and worsens as a person gets older. Learning difficulties, not intelligence, can also occur because of hearing and sight impairments if the school is not informed and the student is not assisted within the learning environment.

Stickler syndrome is thought to be associated with an increased incidence of mitral valve prolapse of the heart, although no definitive research supports this.
