Alex

AlexBoy, born December 1999

Moderate mental retardation, nonverbal, congenital malformation cleft of hard and soft palate, cleft lip (operation in February 2007).

ALEX will age out in DECEMBER 2015!!

This boy deserves the love of a family. We just can’t watch him age out! Everyone who knows him agrees he would make a FABULOUS son. He is such a helper! Last summer, when the weather was nice, we would take the smaller boys outside and some of the big boys who have more freedom would join us. Alex was always in that group. He would run to help us push wheelchairs, or gently take our blind boys by the hand. Every week when bananas are being served he is sure to be seen helping the less capable boys with their bananas, making sure no one steals from anyone else. PRECIOUS. Please someone see Alex. He is amazing.

Stephan

Stephanboy, born 2002

Central nervous system lesions, spastic tetraparesis, severe mental retardation, Vitreous Fibrosis, Horizontal Nystagmus, overbite.

Stephen is such a treasure. We want a family for him so desperately. He is about the size of a 6 or 7 year old- just an itty bitty thing. The nannies say that he is blind, but we believe he can at least see shadows. He always wants to be near the window- especially on sunny days. There are two places you can usually find Stephen- either standing under the window at the end of the hall, or sitting on a chair in the kitchen, waiting for the next meal.

Stephen is extremely sensory-seeking and needs to feel the world around him. He loves to spin, flap his arms, spin some more, run, spin, you get the idea. He has absolutely no sensory input at the institution- so he has to create it himself.

He does not speak and displays many institutional behaviors. He is NOT harmful or aggressive to himself or others. He is absolutely adorable and has so.much.potential. He is more than a diagnosis.

Jonathan

Jonathanboy, born 2002

Moderate mental retardation, cerebral dysfunction of movement, functional cardiomyopathy CH-0.

Jonathan is kind to the other boys and cheerful. He smiles so easily! He is nonverbal at this time. I heard from one volunteer that he always helps the nannies clear the table after meals. The only issues that is easily noticed regarding his “dysfunction of movement” is that he walks on the tips of his toes and kind of lumbers along that way. He is curious and loves to be outside.

To know him is to love him. Our volunteer team has absolutely fallen in love with him over the past month. He is so funny! He speaks and always says “thank you” and “goodbye”. Somehow he is super polite.

Very nice, affectionate child. Helps caregivers, participates in orphanage performances, likes to study.

Can you look into this smiling face and NOT smile back?!

From a family who met him: Charlie is a real sweetheart. He is friendly to all, well behaved, well mannered and follows directions well. He loves to draw and color. He gets along well with the other children in his groupa. He can talk and feeds himself and dresses himself. He would fit in well with younger or older children! He was reserved around us but lit up when I started talking to him. His hugs are precious. He is well-loved by the other children and the workers.

Ben

benBoy, born 2009
Deep mental delay, Failure to Thrive

From a family who has met him many times:
This sweet boy is very beautiful, serious, and fragile. He is very thin, and even though with careful feeding he is finally able to hold his food down, he still is not gaining weight. He is able to sit up on his own and stand, while holding on to the rails of his crib. He can walk while holding on to someone’s finger. No one at the institution has ever seen him smile and he is nonverbal. We aren’t sure what is going on inside him, but we long to see some sort of response in his face. One great thing we have noticed in the past couple of months is that he now cries when his special nanny leaves the room. When she comes back in the room and calls his name he quiets instantly! He loves to be held and cuddled, and he really likes being outside. He simply cannot thrive in the institutional environment. He needs medical treatment and therapy, , but most of all he needs the love of a family. He needs somewhere where he can be safe and loved with abandon.

*** $1000 MATCHING GRANT!  When fund reads $1067, an additional $1000 gift will be added to Ben’s adoption fund ***

Isaiahu

isaiahBoy, born 2009
Deep mental delay, Cerebral palsy

From a family who has met him many times:
This little guy came to the institution at the beginning of last summer and we have seen him blossom under the care of a specially hired nanny. He is nonverbal, but he has the best laugh. He giggles and smiles very easily. The only time we hear him cry is when he is jealous that he doesn’t have his nanny’s full attention. He loves to be taken outside, and he loves to play with his mobile that hangs above his crib. He has a good appetite and is learning how to better eat by spoon instead of by bottle. He is slowly learning to hold his head up, but cannot sit or roll over, as he has had no therapy of any kind. He would absolutely thrive with the love of a family. He is pure sunshine!

Aaron

aaronBoy, born 2003
Waiting on medical diagnoses

From a family who has met him many times:
This boy is absolutely exploding with energy. He’s really unsteady on his feet so he’s constantly roaming the halls half-running/half-falling. He loves to touch and craves physical contact. Sometimes we can get a glorious moment of quiet when he will just let us hold him and wrap our arms around him. He really does love that and it does wonders for his brain development. It’s just a matter of getting him still enough to realize he likes it!

He loves any kind of sensory play, like feeling the dirt outside and holding his hand under a running faucet. He likes to sit in a wheelchair and be pushed around, even though he doesn’t need a wheelchair! The best thing we can do for him is take him on walks. He likes to be outside so sometimes we just get him outside and follow wherever he leads. He doesn’t have any words, but when he gets excited he gives his signature shriek to let us know he’s excited. He needs a family who can provide him with a lot of structure. Right now he is constantly seeking sensory input, and getting into a lot of trouble doing that. We believe he would thrive within the structure and love of a family.

She is very happy, loves to take pictures of everything especially selfies! She speaks some English and has been hosted before. I think she would LOVE to help cook and clean as long as she had a mom to do it with! She liked dressing up and had skirts on most days. She clung to me often and even kissed me when she said goodbye for the last time. She was very bouncy possibly even a little hyper but not totally obnoxious. I was also told she can be bad but I didn’t see any inappropriate behaviors while I was there.

Blessing

BlessingGirl, born 1999
Down syndrome

Blessing AGES out in June 2015!! A Family MUST file their I600A before her birthday in June or she will be LOST forever!!!

From a family who has met her:  She is very small physically and needs to be adopted right away while she still has time to grow and benefit from good nutrition and affection!! She appears very alert and bright, with a sweet personality!

From another family who met her:  This precious girl stole my heart. Whenever I saw her she was always so quiet, calm and very much to herself. I did not see her interact with other children but given the opportunity she will flourish!

From someone who met her in 2013: I met Blessing in 2013 while on a mission trip. I didn’t interact very much with her, but from what I saw of her she is extremely delayed. When she was not receiving physical therapy or in her Montessori-type class she was always in her little chair stimming by herself. I think she has institutional autism on top of her DS. She really needs a lot of love and care, and a family who understands how extensive her needs really are.

Blessing can be adopted with Kristopher, Brayden, Jett, Cambria, or Dylan.

A family with previous adoptive experience, of older children out of institutional settings, would be the best choice for Blessing.

Girl, born late 2002
Slight mental delay, simple astigmatism

From a family who met her in 2014:

This young lady is very sweet! She is in school and just finished the 3rd level. Betsy likes to color, read, run, swing on the playground, and dance. When we were able to talk to her she seemed slightly shy but very calm and gentle. Betsy is articulate and seems only slightly delayed. She and my daughter hugged and cried when they had to say good-bye. Betsy really wants to come to America. She would be a wonderful addition to any family!

I would love to share more with seriously interested families.

From a family who met him in 2014:
This boy is an absolute treasure! He is kind-hearted and thoughtful of others. Brock enjoys dancing in school productions, doing school work on the computer, shooting hoops, playing soccer, reading books, painting and cutting out art projects, and sliding down slides. He is one of my daughter’s really good friends. They hugged and cried when my daughter left the orphanage. Brock desperately needs a family to rescue him and give him a joyful life full of love.

Brandi

BrandiGuardian AngelGirl, Born August 2007
brain malformations, bilateral hearing loss, significant cognitive delays, heart condition strabismus, anemia

Brandi is a beautiful 7 year old girl. She is listed with bilateral hearing loss, but can definitely hear, as she will turn around and look for the person calling her name, and does respond to commands given if she chooses (if she doesn’t, she screams/attempts to run/swats at the caregiver). Cognitively, she is very delayed, more like a toddler, in ability to understand what’s going on around her, and in her responses, and appropriateness. She also has strabismus in both eyes, and has both a heart condition and anemia. She does NOT have CP, nor microcephaly. She does have brain malformations, significant developmental delays, and many stimming behaviors that are typical of lower functioning autism. She is completely nonverbal.

Families interested in Brandi should be aware that she appears to have autism, and that it impacts her significantly. She is a “runner” and will bolt and run unless contained or restrained and potential families need to be aware that this is common in autism, and that they will need to take appropriate measures to keep her safe in a home and family. She has a history of aggression when changes occur, such as a move, or unexpected event, which include biting peers and adults, and she struggled for at least a year after her last orphanage change four years ago, but is doing better now. However, as many with autism thrive on routine and predictability, families need to be aware that she may handle a transition poorly, especially at first. She has excellent mobility, and is very typically sized for a normal 7 year old in weight and height, and when she resists, it is challenging for a grown woman to hold her back. She has been in a school for the deaf, however, she knows no sign language nor does she read lips. She is very much in her own world in many ways. She enjoys music and will sometimes clap, but remains disconnected from the group and does not interact with adults (was not seen with peers).

Brandi attempts to smell/lick everything that is handed to her and when she realizes it isn’t food, she is not typically interested. The nannies report that she has an excellent appetite, and that she enjoys eating. She stims by rocking, throwing herself back and forth, sucking all four fingers on her hand, grunting, and moaning/shrieking. She walks with a lurching gallop. She flaps her hands often. A potential family should be aware that she has no awareness of danger, no fear of strangers and is very much like a very young child emotionally and cognitively, but physically is strong and very mobile. She currently takes psychiatric medications to assist in sleep and behavior.

She is a lovely little girl, with beautiful blond hair and clear complexion. She is in a good orphanage where she is well cared for. Families need to research autism, and be comfortable and familiar with caring safely for a child with the issues mentioned above, in order to provide Brandi with a safe, loving home.

Paige had previously been living with her mother until she lost her rights.

She can sit independently and can crawl! Her speech is not well developed but she can partially understand what you are saying.  She has a very short attention span.

Update June 2013:
Lovely Paige has hair now!  She broke my heart.  She was just sitting on the couch rocking back and forth and didn’t respond at all when I came over to her. Poor, sweet thing!! The nannys love her, but she needs more than they can give. I am not sure if the move was hard on her or what but she just rocked and rocked.

Shayla

 shayla june 2013Girl, born 2004

Diagnoses: deep mental delay. Cerebral paralysis- double spastic form, microcephaly. Strabismus, divergent squint, and Optic atrophy. First degree anemia.

Sweet little Shayla could tremendously use a family and medical attention to help her thrive. She has already been living in this orphanage for 3 years and risks soon having to be transferred to a place where adoption will be next to impossible.

Her speech is not well developed, she holds toys in her hands for brief periods of time (but she sure does love to hold stuffed animals!), she has a reaction when you say her name but she is not able to communicate back but she smiles. She walks with support- can”t walk independently. Children in this orphanage need families! They do not receive enough interaction/therapy to help them thrive. They are seen as hopeless but we know that is not true!

Update June 2013:
This is not a great picture [on the right] but she would NOT sit still. She was wanting to move!! She thought it was so funny and would not stop laughing and rocking back and forth about the camera. The nannys also were laughing with her- her laugh and happiness is very infectious.

Lauren is a super-sweet and active little girl.  She is very social and affectionate, and will do well in a family setting.

As with all children living in these difficult conditions,  this child’s cognitive development has regressed significantly since he/she was younger.  It is of crucial importance that any family considering the adoption of an older child from the mental institution setting be well prepared for what to expect with regards to how the neglect and lack of adequate medical care and nourishment has affected this child.    These children all have TREMENDOUS potential for improvement, and deserve to have a life outside these four walls.

ALIVE and WAITING!

A question was raised about whether Kiersten had passed away, but this photo was taken March 14, 2012 ;) She still needs a family!

Isn’t Kiersten beautiful? She is 15 years old but is still very much a toddler. She is not able to walk on her own. There is nothing in her medical records to indicate why she is so delayed, and she does not show obvious facial features of FAS…her needs are quite unknown.

From her medical records: significant mental delay, congenital hypothyroidism

Chrystyna

Guardian Angelchrystyna2015-croppedGirl, Born 2002

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Chrystyna is a beautiful, brown haired, brown eyed girl who deserves a chance at a better life!  Her official orphanage papers say she has developmental delays/difficulties from birth, but nothing more specific than that.  It is possible she has FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome).  Her biological mother  was deprived her parental rights in December 2004, and the biological father is not known.  Chrystyna has so much potential, and will be a precious gift to any family who adopts her.

Chrystyna is already living in an institution, so we need a family for her right away!

UPDATE:  God has been watching Chrystyna.  She was recently transferred out of the institution into a wonderful facility, where they teach these children, work with them, and they appear very well cared for.  The difference in the few girls who were transferred OUT of the institution is incredible!   Please give these girls a second chance for a loving family!

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.

From a family who met her, Sept 2012:
She is getting settled into her new environment. She seems to be very comfortable in her groupa. She is very beautiful and still has a lot of potential.  She deserves a chance!

From someone who met her, June 2013:
During the music performance, she was constantly stimming really fast (like it looks like she is being fast forwarded) and after they finished she was taken out by a nanny. Not sure what is going on with her;  If interested families want to see the videos they are welcome to! I know a family tried to take pictures of her last year but couldn’t get a good one because she moved so much!

Soleil

Soleil June 2013Girl, born 2001

Soleil comes very highly recommended from the orphanage director. She has shown great progress since she entered the orphanage.

She is running out of time — a family must be found for her before she turns 16!

Update June 2013:
Soliel really stands out.  She is a helper. She was helping the younger children stand up and dance and they were watching her to mimic what to do. She seems to be one of children that helps the orphanage staff as she is able to follow directions. She can read and speaks very clearly when asked questions. It is unclear why she is in this specific orphanage and they pointed her out specifically as needing a family! She is a very sweet girl who said she has dreamed about having a family but isn’t sure if she will ever have one- it just about broke my heart. There is also video available with her in it!

From a family that spent time with her January 2015:50102223008 Reilly (2)

Very sweet girl who loved to practice English with me. Very tight scissor gait but walks with walker and up and down stairs. She also can hop a bit like a frog on hands and feet when she doesn’t have her walker. She is polite and likes chocolate! She seems a little shy but not so much she wouldn’t talk to us. I have tons of photos because there was a whole bunch of selfies with my daughter.

Rebecca

Down syndrome

From an adoptive family who met her in Jan 2015:  ”I sat next to Rebecca today at an orphanage Christmas concert. She is SO cute! When she came in to sit down, she was SO excited to be there. She saw a boy in the row in front of us that she knew, and they greeted each other warmly. Her smile lit up her whole face.

We were sitting in the last row, so she stood quiet and attentive during the concert, her hands on the back of the chair in front of her, peering between adults’ shoulders to see her friends and classmates perform. Her hair was elaborately pulled back into a series of little ponytails on top of her head, which were then braided together. The caregiver sitting next to her obviously likes her quite a lot. At the end, of the concert, all the kids who are mobile were taken up to dance around the Christmas tree, and she and little Wetherby (who really is quite little)! danced next to each other in the circle. ”

*** Rebecca can be be adopted with WETHERBY, if a family is interested and approved in their home study.  ***

Wetherby

Down syndrome

Update April 2015: He is little and really cute, and we are told he is smart and very high functioning

From a family who met Wetherby in Jan 2015:

He is a sweet little kid! He loves to dance and loves music. He is incredibly tiny for his age and definitely needs a family’s love and care to help him grow. He is in the same group as Rebecca. They frequently dance together to music the caregivers will play for them on the TV.

*** Wetherby can be be adopted with REBECCA, if a family is interested and approved in their home study.  ***
