Diagnosis: Cerebral palsy, general delay of psychological and speech development, seizures.  Natalee also has vision issues, having both a Convergent squint (right-sided) and Partial atrophy of eye nerves.

This darling girl needs a family, or she’s destined to spend the rest of her life closed off from the world in a laying room.

How sweet to see her all dolled up for her picture — someone must care very much for her!

Natalee was previously listed as Diana!

From a missionary who has visited with her:  ”Diana is indeed a beautiful little girl with stunning blue eyes, despite her visual impairment. I would say however that she defintely has CP or some form of muscular disease. She is unable to stand, sit, roll over by herself or even hold her head up … She is almost completely unresponsive however over time she seemed to grow more peaceful as I held in my arms and sang to her. Diana’s needs are severe, nevertheless, she is a princess who deserves the love of a forever family and who knows the potential she may have in a loving environment. If she is not adopted soon she will without a doubt spend the rest of her life bedridden and alone. ”

$139.00 is available towards the cost of my adoption!

Andrew

Guardian Angel

Boy, Born May 2007

Oh Andrew…..Andrew was born with cataracts in both eyes.  He is completely blind, and has little opportunity to try to manage his surroundings and learn anything but darkness and loneliness in his current environment.  He most likely has other cognitive and physical delays, but what a difference a loving family will make for him!!

Families considering Andrew should be well versed in the effects of institutional life on a child like Andrew, who has had little stimulation of any kind.

From a family who met Andrew in January 2012:

From what I saw, Andrew is a very smart little boy who is very much in need of a family to rescue him from orphanage life. There was one nanny who really liked Andrew, and she would actually let him out of his crib to walk around the room (very rare for this to happen in this room). He navigated the room very well, was very stable in walking, and very confident in his abilities. There was one time that Andrew was in the big play crib, and when I walked near the crib, he felt my presence (or perhaps he could see me), and he walked around the edge of the crib until he got to me. I patted him and he smiled from ear to ear. I had to stop touching him because the nannies on duty that day didn’t want me near the children, and when I walked away, he just cried and cried. It broke my heart. He’s a precious little boy in desperate need of rescue.

Additional pictures and a video available.

Clarice

Girl, born July 1999
Down syndrome

Clarice's pictures are so fun to see – she seems to be all sunshine and motion!   She has such an amazing grin!

Clarice is so tiny; these pictures were taken recently, at age 12, and compare her height to the chair behind her to see how petite she is.  She is more the size of a 4 year old than her actual 12.5 years.  She has many facial features of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, in addition to her Down syndrome.

She has the personality of an impetuous toddler- very high energy and eager to try everything life has to offer. She too needs a family, and the sooner the better. The possibilities for a child to thrive when they reach a family are endless. She will definitely need medical attention, as you can tell from just seeing her teeth, and lots of patient instruction and guidance.

Interested families should be homestudy approved prior to commitment.

$2284.00 is available towards the cost of my adoption!

Greta

Girl, born November 1998
Down syndrome

Mama, are you out there?  Please come get me!  We are so happy for the chance to help sweet Greta find her family.

Greta is very petite; more the size of a 5 year old than the 13 year old she actually is.  Developmentally, she is quite delayed, probably closer to a 3-4 year old.  In many ways, she is toddler like. Greta is missing out on the essential things in life- a mama and daddy to teach her the things she needs to know, school lessons to maximize her potential for learning, and hope for a future.

$2293.14 is available towards the cost of my adoption!

Donations are tax deductible.

Mabel

Girl, born May 2005
Diagnosis:  Down syndrome

Mabel is a very shy, calm natured little girl.  Right now, she does not appear to be walking at all.  In the pictures, she had been brought in from another groupa and was in an unfamiliar place, so she was a little nervous in a new environment.  Sadly, in the orphanage at this time, she is unable to get any therapy.  Imagine her potential and what she could do if she was getting physical, occupational and speech therapy!  Mabel truly needs someone to adopt her soon, and help her become all that God has intended for her to be!

Poor, sad little Mabel — she’s been chewing on her sleeves and hands for self-soothing.   She’s such a tiny little bird — please help her find a family so she can reach her full potential!  She has the most beautiful eyes, let’s help put the shine back in them!

MABEL can stand for “Mothers Always Bring Extra Love,” and if ever a child needed extra love, it is this precious girl.  She has no one to love on her- so she’s chewing on her hands and sleeves. Her little hands look raw. What a horrible way to have to comfort yourself- to just be a darling baby and no one love on you because you happen to have an extra chromosome.  She’s tiny, no bigger than a 3 year old. Her cheeks are raw, from her having her wet hands against them, and the cool air of winter hitting them.  Somewhere, this child has a mom that will bring “extra love” for this precious child of God with an “extra chromosome”. Mama? Do you see me?

Additional pictures available.   Interested families should be homestudy approved (or close to it) prior to commitment.  Large families welcome, older parents welcome, married couples only.   Travel required.

Katrina (50)

Girl, Born December 2001

Oh what a miracle, to have an updated photo of Katrina!!!    And there is the light I  knew had to be there!   She doesn’t realize it, but now that she has a profile here on Reece’s Rainbow, Katrina has a CHANCE…a chance for a new life, a family of her own, to get out of these four walls and to have something to smile about.

From her medical records:  Down syndrome, significant cognitive delay (coupled with FAS), flatfoot, partial atrophy of optic nerves, esotropia, secondary cardiomyopathy.

From a missionary who visited with her in March 2012: the most beautiful pictures of Katrina!   Oh my heart…I so wanted to bring her home!   She is a giggly soft hearted darling…she needs a mama!

Katrina and Tania can be adopted together if a family is approved and interested.   Families should be HS approved (or close to it) prior to commitment.   10 day wait often waived here.  Married couples only, larger families welcome, travel required.

Eric

Guardian Angel

Boy, born Dec 2008

Eric is a smiley little fellow who likes to feel his caretaker’s heartbeat or pulse, because it comforts him. He would be a wonderful little brother in a household of older children.

Eric has arthrogryposis and compensated hydrocephalus. He has had a surgical repair of spina bifada. Overall, he is healthy and would do well in a family without smaller children. His upper body is quite strong and he has full use of his hands, fingers and arms, but he has little control or movement in his lower limbs and they are significantly smaller than his upper body. He can squeeze very tightly with his hands, and reach a full arm’s length with no problems even though his resting position is the one you see in the pictures. He does not talk, according to the caretakers but does make sounds to communicate. Cognitively, he has significant delays due to his history of spina bifida and hydrocephalus. He is very much still an infant in many ways.

The picture in the orange shirt was taken at age 18 months, and the second picture was taken at 3 years old. He may have a sister a few years older in a different region who possibly could also be available for adoption or he could be adopted separately. She also has special needs.

John Mark

Boy, born July 2010

Look who is back!  Love this little munchkin!

John Mark was listed previously — and he's eligible again for adoption!  He has Down syndrome.

From a missionary who met John Mark, fall 2011:

I cannot brag about this little man enough. First of all he has the most beautiful red hair and blue eyes. Second of all, he is developing very very well. He plays with toys. He is very interactive. The only times I ever played with him were when he was sick and in the hospital, yet he was as happy as can be! He also appeared to be teething one of the days, as he was trying to gnaw on my hospital gown, but again it didn't take the smile off of his face! One day while we were visiting with him the door opened and three nurses came in just to play with him for a minute while they were on break. They told us he was their favorite patient! Man did he love having 5 girls' full attention! He stole my heart, and I know he would steal yours too!! He will make an absolutely wonderful son for somebody!!!

These new photos were taken through the window by one of our adopting families.  “Oh my goodness, is someone looking at me?  Is that my mama?  Could it be?  Oh….no.  Why do I get my hopes up?   :(  ”

Stacy is in a region where the 10 day wait is often waived.  Married couples only, large families and older parents welcome.  Stacy can be adopted with several of our other children.

Ollie

Boy, born October 2010

Baby Ollie has Down syndrome, and is still so young!  What a great opportunity to find him a family to provide the care and medical attention he needs.

Ollie does have a heart condition and should see a cardiologist as soon as he’s home.  His condition is listed as “heart murmur – ventricular septal defect, open arterial canal,  peripheric pulmonary artery stenosis.”

More photos available, large families welcome!   Ollie can be adopted with Keegan if a family is interested and approved.

From a family who met him in May, 2012:

We had the pleasure of meeting sweet Ollie today!  Day after day, we kept seeing this sweet boy brought out by the same nanny and we finally went over and introduced ourselves.  The nanny allowed us to talk to him and he smiled the sweetest smile!  We extended our hands out to him because we have learned that the nannies teach all of the children to shake hands, and he shook each of our hands.  The nanny put him in the swing and started singing to him and we could tell that he was listening to her and enjoying the song and the attention.  He interacted very well with his nanny and another child nearby.  A very peaceful, handsome little boy!

Tania (50)

Girl, born August 2002.

She is said to be independant and active, and she especially loves to swing.  She is shy with other children, and seeks attention from adults, cuddling up when hugs and affection are available.

From her medical records:  Down syndrome, esotropia, flatfoot, secondary  cardiomyopathy.

From a missionary who visited with her in March 2012:  One time the care giver made her sit with other children she was so desperate for me all to herself shecried! she really didnt want to share me.   This is seriously one child who wants a Mama!   She seemed so bright, there is so much potential here being wasted.   She whacked the other children to keep them away from me but I could tell she was not an aggressive child.  Tania is fiesty and able and just desperate for love!  I loved her!!!   I wanted to bring her and Katarina home.  Tania is always active and she loves playing with her swing set, unlike the other kids who rather just play with their toys. The child is a bit shy around the children of her age.  However, she is very brave and courageous when dealing with new visitors.  The girl suffers from a lack of motherly care and gentleness, so she is attracted to everyone who is nice and kind to her.   She hides her lonely soul behind the wall of her active and independent lifestyle.   But as soon as she receives a warm hug and a little love, the mischievous girl suddenly becomes docile and calm.

Larger families, older parents welcome.  Travel required.   This region does often waive the 10-day waiting period!

Orion

Boy, Born January 2009

MORE PHOTOS available.   Orion has Down syndrome and a patent foramen ovale – which is a small hole between the chambers of the heart.  This is common in childhood, and often closes without any medical intervention.  But it is clear that Orion needs a loving family to get him up out of this chair and living his life!

These children are blessed to be in an excellent orphanage, however this region typically requires 3 trips.  This is a great orphanage and the children receive excellent care, and there is minimal travel in-country.  This orphanage is close to the Capital city, so it's fantastic for sight-seeing.

Orion is in the same orphanage with Chandler, Robert, and Nadine, among others, and could be adopted with them if a family was interested in doing so.

We have had many successful adoptions from this orphanage, and families are willing to share their experiences.

Girl, born March 2007

Harriet has a cleft hard and soft palate.   She has many facial features of fetal alcohol syndrome, please research this condition as a preparation for her needs.  There are several children in this orphanage who could be adopted together!

From an adoptive family who visited with her in Jan 2012:  We saw Harriet (3) today. She has the thickest, dark curly hair and beautiful eyes! She snuck out of the groupa room to come see us. I got to hold her for just a moment. She's really tiny. Working on pictures.

 Boy, born January 2005

Jordan is waving hello!

Brody

Boy, born April 2006

Based on the time that I was able to spend with him, I believe that Brody is autistic. Brody does not make eye contact however he shows no aversion to touch and actually likes to be held. Brody was transferred in December but while he was at the baby house, he exhibited a lot of self-harming behaviours, namely banging his head constantly, harder than I have ever seen before. Nevertheless, Brody is the child I saw the most progress with. During our one-on-one time he was calm and would often go the entire hour without engaging in any self-harming behaviour. He would smile, laugh, and explore his environment and sometimes even make eye contact for seconds at a time. Since being transferred to an orphanage for preschool-aged children (age 4-8) with special needs, Brody is doing much better. While at the baby orphanage Brody had what I thought were permanent bumps on his head the size of half a ping pong ball as a result of banging his head on the ground. Brody has since nearly stopped banging his head and when I last saw him in January those bumps had gone down considerably. The orphanage Brody is currently in is one of the good ones. Small with a good staff-to-child ratio (there are 6 kids to 2 workers in Brody’s group). It is clear that the workers care about the children very much and show them plenty of love and affection. Brody can walk independently, is being toilet trained and is learning to feed himself. He does not speak and it’s hard to tell what, if anything, he understands. Brody responds well to music (i.e. me singing to him) and his absolute favourite thing is playing with someone’s hands – clapping them together, watching the fingers wiggle back and forth, etc. If you work at it a bit you can get plenty of smiles out of him and he has the best laugh when you tickle him.

Unfortunately, if he is not adopted by the time he is eight-years-old, Brody will be transferred to an institution. I know that Brody will become more and more troubled in an institution setting however I believe that with a patient, loving family he has the potential to be a truly happy little boy.

Brody has a brother, who is also in the orphanage.   It is not known if the brother is available for adoption, but families should be aware, and consider adopting them together if possible.

Aiden

Guardian Angel

Boy, born May 2007

From a volunteer who spent several months at this orphanage:

Aiden is visually impaired (I'm not sure if he has some vision or if he is 100% blind). Aiden has some more significant delays however it is difficult to tell if he is cognitively delayed for medical reasons or if his delays are simply a result of institutionalization / lack of stimulation. Aiden engages in a lot of self-stimulation such as poking his eyes, tapping his head on the side of his crib, rocking back and forth, etc. When I first met Aiden he was able to walk around the edges of the crib holding on to the sides, but he would not walk independently, even while holding on to someone's hands. As I worked with him however and he grew to trust me he began to take his first steps and now he loves to walk! Still, at least while I was there, the workers never let him out of his playpen.  Aiden does not speak but he responds to his name and I believe he understands simple directions. He is not toilet trained but he is learning to feed himself.  Aiden is difficult to engage. He doesn't initiate interaction but when you play with him/tickle him, etc. he is full of smiles and laughter. I believe that this boy has way more potential than can be seen right now. Whoever Aiden's family will need to be persistent about getting in his face in order to force him to engage and patient with what may be slow progress but I believe that with the consistent love and stimulation that a family would bring this little guy has all kinds of potential.

From a missionary who spent several months at his orphanage at the end of 2011:

Aiden is a complicated little boy. His years of minimal attention and probably some sensory issues seem to be the biggest of his struggles. He does at times hit his head or bite his hands to self stimulate. He let me hold and comfort him when he hit his head harder than he meant to one time, which was a great sign as far as attachment and trust goes. I like to refer to Aiden as my "mouthy" boy. He loves to chew on hard toys, and he very much enjoyed holding a slinky in his mouth and shaking his head to make it fly back and forth. He does not seem to have any vision at all. He navigates fairly well despite his lack of sight. His favorite thing ever is to be tickled. He has a wonderful smile and laugh. He will need a lot of attention and stimulation to help him to recover from all he has experienced, but I think he would really blossom with the right family!

Russ

Boy, born August 2005

Russ's profile says "goloproentsephaliy" which is unclear, other than there's some condition with his brain.  It's unclear if it's a physical or mental condition.

It has been suggested that his 'goloproentsephaliy' may actually be holoprosencephaly like Catherine 9HA, but it would be a milder form than hers i.e. lobar or semi-lobar holoprosencephaly, rather than alobar.

We're hoping to get additional information soon.

Elaine has a sweet smile, and a HUGE hair bow!  She was all dolled-up for her pictures, and brought a favorite dolly along.

She has a moderate mental delay, flat feet, and may have tuberculosis.  Elaine does show significant facial features of FAS, although this is not documented in her medical records.

UPDATE FEB 2012:

Elaine's diagnosis has been changed to MILD mental delay.  She is making good progress in her mental development.  She is happy and healthy, polite, and plays well with other children.  Elaine is also very tender, and helpful.

Ross looks a little forlorn, but he's really chewing a chocolate treat!

It also appears that he has either a lazy eye or vision issues, from the pictures.

Carter

Guardian Angel

Boy, Born June 2004

From his medical records:  Spina bifida;  congenital defect of central nervous system;  Arnold-Chiari syndrome;  Lower paraparesis;  combined hydrocephaly

From his caregivers:  The boy is very smart, friendly, and communicative. He wants be adopted.

From a family who met him in early 2012:

Carter is pretty quiet, and seems sweet, cooperative and observant.  He’s walking with a walker, now, and focuses on that a lot in the halls … He has the most precious smile I have ever seen on a little boy. He is adorable- he still has some baby fat in his cheeks- and he moves so well. You can’t tell it in the picture, but his feet actually flip completely in. He walks on the side of his feet and his ankle and then flicks his feet underneath him. Give the boy some therapy and braces and he’ll be off. He’s a happy kid- and again, must be smart to be in the class he’s in. He’s a little guy- maybe the size of a 5 year old? Very cute.

Carter’s in the “normal school classes” at the orphanage, meaning that he’s learning the same things the other cognitively typical kids are learning in school … He seems like a very laidback, fun loving kid with a perfect sense of timing for practical jokes. He understands cause and effect, is able to be sneaky when surprising someone (again, a mark of intelligence). He’s pretty obedient, especially compared to most 8 year old boys I know.

He’s the kind of kid that refused to let some labels define him. Most of the kids there with spina bifida are in wheelchairs. He’s walking. Walking well, actually, either pushing his walker or his buddy’s wheelchair. He’s adorable- he has the cutest little chubby cheeks that plump up so sweetly when he smiles (which is often). His eyes have that mischevious little twinkle, it reminds me of the Dennis the Menace character with his cuteness. He talks, is polite, is sweet and funny and smart.

Marcus

Guardian Angel

Boy, Born December 2002

Marcus is a sweet little boy!  He is 9 years old and hoping for his own forever family.  He was born with spina bifida.  He is not able to walk on his own.

From his medical records:  myelocele; Q 5, hydrocephaly;  flail legs with damage of functions of pelvic organs.

From our facilitation team: I personally saw this boy and talked to him. He is a very smart boy. Unfortunately he cannot walk at all, and he uses a wheelchair. I am not sure whether he is toilet trained or wears diapers, because he is a big boy who was uncomfortable with careful attention to him, particularly to his disability.   He told me that he wants to be adopted., and that’s why he allowed to make a picture of him.  He did not want to demonstrate his disability, so he covered his legs with a blanket.

Several kids had been adopted from this orphanage before, and the Director is rather open to foreign adoption. She keeps in touch with all the families who adopted the children from her orphanage. She showed me only the kids who demonstrated their wish to be taken to the family. And when I made pictures all of them confirmed their desire to be adopted. I believe the Director will be very glad if this child is taken to the good family.”

The boy is very smart, communicative, and friendly. He wants be adopted.

Erin

Girl, Born August 2002

Cerebral palsy (CP), spastic diplegia G 80;   pseudobulbar dysarthria; concomitant strabismus;  Mixed specific developmental disorders F 83

Erin is a very friendly, pretty girl who is hoping for a forever family.   Married couples only.

From a family who met her in Feb 2012:   Oh, Erin is my sweetheart! Seriously. She’s just adorable. Right now, she’s gone to another region, getting her leg braces adjusted after a growth spurt. She is very mobile. When we first met her, she was sitting in the floor putting her shoes on. She speaks some English and is in the highest level of classes they offer, which includes a foreign language option, so I know she must be very smart. This picture does NOT do her justice.

She is nine, nearly 10, and is like a thin 8 year old. She has personality like you would not believe, and is very polite and friendly. She was so helpful to us the first few days when we were new. Everyone really seemed to like her as well. Honestly if it weren’t for the fact that she had a Russian accent, Erin looks like any other American preteen. She would fit right into a family and school and church! Her diagnoses on paper seem pretty serious but in real life, they did not. Her CP did not appear severe; it primarily affected her ankles and feet from what we saw and it didn’t impair her mobility hardly at all. Her eyes had a mild pulling in of what appeared to be the left eye. I have no idea why they listed developmental disorders, because as I mentioned, she’s in the highest level of classes and is considered to be very smart.
