Because every family deserves the blessing of a child with Down Syndrome... |
![]() |
Asia General Information
The orphan crisis for children with Down syndrome and other special needs crosses every political and continental border, extending through the countries of Asia. Although many reside in foster homes, they are still discarded and need a forever family of their own.
China, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines all do an outstanding job of documenting each child’s social history, as well as providing thorough medical history and updates for potential adoptive families. The process to adopt in these countries is very straightforward and predictable. We have outstanding agency partners serving these children. Length of travel and other requirements have been markedly relaxed over the last year, and even allow for single moms and larger families to adopt.
Despite all of these positive features, our Asian children are often the last to be chosen. Please help us raise awareness and find adoptive families for them!
Bradley
Boy, born June 2010
PRC
Congenital heart disease, cerebral palsy
Bradley arrived at our institute when he was 1.5 years old. In the beginning, he could not stand, is very quiet and his cries were not loud. He slept well through the night. His eyes could not follow the movement of toys and could not find the source of noise. He has limited awareness of his surroundings.
His motor development is delayed. He cannot speak and is a timid and quiet little boy.
Donnie
Boy, born Oct 2010
PRC
Donnie is 2 years old and has complete vision loss. He is very sensitive to his surrounding environment. He would tilt head on one side to listen sound, especially he is talked to by a familiar caregiver. He has very sensitive touching and he could know the familiar toys via touching and smelling. He likes touching stuffed animals nearby, at which time he touches them gently as if exploring new things. He likes listening to music and sometimes he claps hands indicating he is happy. He tends to play on his own. Donnie exhibits some language and motor delays in addition to his diagnosis of blindness. He would benefit from some additional intervention and services for visually impaired children. We hope a family will be able to do this for him.
Franklin
Boy, born March 2008
PRC
Cerebral palsy, High tension in four limbs, and congenital heart disease
Emmaline
Girl, born June 2002
PRC
Down syndrome
Emmaline is well behaved, lovely and cute. Sometimes when she feels injustice from other children, she would act as a spoiled child in the cuddle of a teacher. As she grows up everyday, we feel happy yet we worry about her, because she is very sensitive and is able to understand what the teachers tell her. Sometimes she could do something out of predict. She has a good friend and they are called “golden partners” just because they are always together whatsoever playing or eating. They share things well and they even do things together such as cleaning floors.
We remember that once she found one shoe on the air conditioning, and she wanted to get it down, however, she was not tall enough and she babbled telling her friend. The friend took a chair, Emmaline stepped on the chair in order to get the shoe, and finally, she made it. She really surprised us at that time. She is really amazing. She could think of using a chair to help to get the shoe to finish her goal.
Unfortunately, she seldom speaks, which is the thing that we worry about her the most. Only give her more stimulate of language skills such as doing some oral gym to help her learn simple words, could she incorporate herself into this society well.
Tessa
Girl, born November 2010
PRC
Down syndrome, Cleft lip and palate
Tessa was sent to a foster family for care the same day she was admitted. Due to her severe cleft palate, feeding her was extremely difficult.
A comprehensive physical was done in spring 2012. The diagnosis was severe cleft lip and palate and down syndrome. At the time, the doctors examined her heart beat and found everything to be normal.
In May, she received cleft palate repair surgery; the surgery was successful and her recovery went well. Tessa’s outer appearance improved.
Tessa is a timid and shy little girl who recognizes people. She is closest to and dependant on her nanny. She sleeps with her nanny every night. When she sees the nanny carry another child and not her, she will feel slighted and start to cry. Tessa can understand our words. She will turn her head to look around. If you ask her whether she wants milk, she will respond with a smile. She can say “nana”. When interacting with strangers, she will look at you quietly and will not respond to questions. Only after a period of time of interaction will she start to warm up. She also likes to look pretty and likes to wear pretty clothes. When you praise her and tell her how pretty she looks, she will immediately smile happily.

Annie
Girl, born 2009
PRC
cerebral palsy, epilepsy
Annie was found abandon at 1 yr old. Her evaluation in July 2012 stated….. During the test the patient can smile when teased, muscular tension of whole body is high, can not keep her head vertical stably, when held to stand her feet is crossed, when lying on stomach she does not use her forearms to support, she can not roll over, can not sit alone. She can not get things on her own initiative, can not evaluate her adaptability.
From someone who knows her:
She’s doing really well. She’s on medication to control her seizures and it’s working fine. I have never seen her have a seizure, but I believe it has happened occasionally when she has been febrile with a cold or virus. Of course, does need her medication to keep her stable. She loves her wheel chair.
Annie’s personality is loving and sweet. She is happiest if somebody will just spend time with her – laughing playing and cuddling her. But she is not whiny when other kids are getting the attention either, so she would be a great fit for a large family. She just enjoys movement and action, whether it involves her, or is going on around her. One of her favorite games is when you push her wheelchair really fast between two people – she laughs so much at this!
She’s bright and has a great understanding of everything, but cannot communicate verbally.
Her disability is definitely severe, but she is emotionally very healthy. We would so love to see her in a family. Eventually she will need to leave our home, as she is absolutely not palliative, and we desperately want to see that move take her to a loving home! She is really such a beautiful child. She is like sunshine, she warms everyone around her. Even though she is trapped inside a body which will not do what she needs it to do, the beauty of her personality will not be contained. If we can find a family who can manage her physical needs, they will be so blessed by this precious daughter. It makes me so sad to think of her future if she has to remain in her birth country.

She can have meals, dress, zip, button and wash face and feet by herself. She loves to be beautiful, likes clothes with colorful background instead of just one color. She likes to play in the park, she cheers, jumps like a happy bird when she reaches the park. She doesn’t like to stay home and watch TV, when she is upset, she pouts her lips and ignore others; when her requirements are satisfied, she smiles immediately. In the kindergarten, she performs good and cooperate with the teachers actively.

When foster mom takes him to pick up his older foster brother from school, he raises his head in his stroller, looks at the sky, and laughs heartily. He is curious about everything. ”
Update in July 2011: Jimmy, now four years old, has been on the shared list for a long time … At the time his file was submitted, he didn’t even walk yet! Now he runs. When the file was prepared, he didn’t speak at all. At the age of 6 years and 7 months, Xander did well in all aspects of taking care of himself: he eats food himself, washes the dishes after meal and takes shower, puts on clothes, socks and shoes, goes to washroom and occasionally he helps caretaker to do works within his abilities. At the age of 6 years and 1 month: he is active, restless and unquiet, able to greet familiar people and call “teacher, aunt, uncle, brother, sister”, he’s really naughty and played on class, he didn’t like to be restricted, playing is the nature for boys, however the teacher demanded him to keep classroom discipline and he couldn’t affect other kids, he’s acceptable to teacher’s words. At the age of 6 years 7 months, Xander behaved well on classes and he was praised many times by teacher, however his expression ability was not good enough and couldn’t express himself with whole sentences, so most of the time he needed the gestures, teacher said he had made big improvements, we trust he would express himself fluently and naturally.

Jessica
Girl, born July 2004
PRC
cerebral palsy
Jessica is currently 8 years old. She is a shy and sensitive little girl. She is also timid.
Jessica was abandoned by her parents in front of our institute in 2005 due to her cerebral palsy. At the time, her complexion was dark and she was skinny. She could neither walk nor talk. In the institute, she is a very good girl who did not cry without reason. We all treasure her. When she interacts with other children, she likes to hold hands with them and touch their faces. Most interestingly, she takes very good care of her toys as they are always the cleanest and complete after she plays with them. For all of this, she is constantly praised by our caretakers.
Because of her cerebral palsy, Jessica has limitations in movement and speech. She received rehabilitation treatment in the institute for a period of time. From July 2011, she received rehabilitation treatment for half a year. Currently, she can walk slowly when holding onto something. She can also say some simple words. For example, she can say the names of all the children in the institute. Because she is timid, she cannot walk freely for fear of falling. She’s afraid to step forward and would sometimes just sit on the floor. We would tell her encouraging words everyday, for Jessica is a child in need of much encouragement.

The caretakers thought it was a miracle that she would survive. She has a strong will to live and has a healthy appetite. She eats three meals a day and is not a picky eater.
After a period of care, she slowly gained weight and colored returned to her complexion. Even more encouraging is that she began to speak. She will call the caretaker often, which made the caretakers very happy. She took her first step in May 2009 and surprised everyone when she started walking. William is considered to be a sweet and considerate boy, he helps other children clear up their toys and is “the teacher’s wonderful little helper”. William’s foster mother has been working with him on his emotional control and stability, he is becoming more stable through her guidance and comfort. His schooling is helping him to progress in his learning though he continues to receive speech training through a Speech Language Pathologist.
Tommy has adapted very well to his foster family as well. He has developed a close relationship with his foster mother and seeks her attention. His emotions have also stabilized and he gets along well with his foster sister as well. He is very independent and can follow directions and warnings well. He also loves to go to school though he is about one year behind children of his age – it has been recommended that he needs more social stimulations and his therapy seems to be helping him catch up.
William and Tommy are looking for a forever home where they can be cared for and loved together!
