Julia

2015

2015

julia-2016Girl, born 2002

FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome), probable secondary CP

Julia has such happy, giant brown eyes and a smile that lights up a room!

Listed:  January 13, 2013

Update from August 2016:  Last year Julia got operated on, on her feet. This year she is walking like a queen! She gets therapy where she learns to walk in a straight line, jump, etc. It was amazing to see what she was capable of. She was talking a lot this year. It’s very hard to understand her, even if you speak the language, but the girls that she has been in a group with for many years understand her completely and are capable of having conversations together. She loves to go on the swing, she hates to get off again. 😉

It is hard to tell what she does and doesn’t understand. She hardly responded to any question that was asked. She only answered question about whether or not she wanted to walk around the building, go on the swing, play with the ball. It was hard to tell if she wasn’t interested in answering other questions or that she didn’t understand the other questions or didn’t know the answer.

This year she showed less harming behaviors, but they were not totally gone. See does bite herself or other smaller children around her sometimes. There doesn’t seem to be a specific reason for it. It happens on random moments. But she is totally not an aggressive girl, she is so cheerful and enthusiastic. She has been a hero in her rehab therapy. It makes me think that she can achieve a lot if she gets the chance and sets her mind to it. I would really look forward to see how she’d thrive in a family!

UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 2015: “Julia is a very enthusiastic girl. I don’t know how else I should put it in words. Meeting Julia is an experience. She is one blast of fun and energy and happiness. When I met Julia I called her my little monkey, because as soon as your within reach, she will grab you (whereever she can) and she will climb on you. And she will hold on so tight that you don’t even have to hold her. She won’t fall. She is really strong. She loves to be hold This spring Julia got operated on her feet. Before her feet were shaped like how ballerinas hold their feet while dancing. This summer she was wearing casts and one of our last days the casts were taken off and her feet are straight. Even with the casts she was already walking on her own, without the casts she did the same. Walking was very hard for her before the operation. She could amaze me sometimes by getting up and walking a couple steps to reach something she really wanted, but now she was really capable of walking, not just a couple steps. She is still in a wheelchair most of the time though. Julia is potty trained and will tell if she has to use it. She can dress (or at least undress) herself. She can play accurate with toys, like dolls, or pretend play with kitchen tools. She also tries to brush hair and put a band in it. She is really careful when she does that. She can drink from a cup and eat by herself. Julia can say some words, she doesn’t speak in sentences. She understands what is being said to her. Julia is pretty social if you compare her to many of the other children in her group. She is willing to share toys sometimes. She likes to show you around and show you beautiful things, like flowers. She has a hard time sharing personal attention though. She just wants someone for her own. Someone that she doesn’t have to share. She wants someone who has time for her, sees her, likes her. And it’s not hard to like her. With her big smile, her beaming eyes and her loving hugs it’s easy to fall in love with this girl. Last year we think she was sedated many days that we were there. She would hardly respond to anything. She would only hold my hand, but she wouldn’t even try to hold it when I walked away. We expect that they sedated her because she is such an energetic girl and there was a lack of staff last year. This year we didn’t see that anymore. Things are better in her facility than last year. She will most likely also get some kind of physical therapy now that her casts are taken off. I’ve seen some self-harming behaviors in Julia. Sometimes she bites herself or pinches herself. She can do this so badly that she starts to bleed. She can also bite and pinch others when she is upset. This is not regular behavior for her, but I’ve seen it happen. Julia is a loving girl who desperately needs a family. She has a sweet character with a lot of fire in her spirit as well. She needs someone to get her out there, before she loses the fire in her eyes.”

From a volunteer who visited with her in July 2014:  “I know Julia as a big Drama Queen. She loves attention and she’ll do anything to draw your attention. But not this year. I don’t know if she was on heavier sedatives or that she lost her strength to fight for attention. The only thing she’d do was take my hand as I walked by. Normally she’d wheel after me and try to climb on me, but it seems like there was no strength left. I missed my Julia as I know her, my little monkey. I want her to find back her energy to get out of life what’s in there. She’s an amazing girl and she deserves a loving family. She Always has a big smile on her face and she’s really caring. She takes care of dolls as if they are real babies. She feeds them, changes their diapers. She loves to play with my hair and she actually tries to put the band in it. She is amazing! She would be such a good daughter! “

From someone who met her:   Julia is a girl that I know as the girl with the big smile.  Somehow she just seem to smile almost always. She’s a little monkey. Whenever somebody enters her group she would crawl up to that person and just start to climb on him/her. She doesn’t even need you to give her a hand, she’ll just climb up without any help and then she hangs on your neck, looking around, proud, as if she wants to say ‘Did you see that? Do you see where I am?’

Guardian AngelHer favorite toy is a doll. She plays with it as if it is a baby. Keeping the doll up straight, putting her down carefully. She feeds and clothes the doll. One of the nurses showed her how she should put a cotton diaper on the doll, she totally loved it. She even sings lullabies for the doll and she’ll ask visitors to do the same. She also loves to play with long hair. She really tries to make ponytails or braids.

Julia is able to walk, but her legs are really crooked, and she needs help to keep standing or to walk.  Julia is described as curious and enthusiastic.

Evelyn

Evelyn (1) Evelyn (2)Girl, born August 2003
PRC
Developmental delays

Listed:  September 10, 2013

Evelyn is a pretty little girl who was abandoned at age 5 in a rural area. She had received no education and therefore is now a 10 year old trying to catch up with her peers. She is one of the favorites at the center. Several nannies take her home with them so she can experience family life. In the center she is in a room with 4 girls and 1 nanny. She is very shy especially around strangers. Evelyn attends the special class at school and is now able to count to 100 and on her own told me “thank you” although they say she does not understand many words in English. Her writing is excellent. She also loves to sing and is very talented.

Evelyn’s favorite foods are apples and chicken wings. Her favorite color is pink. She truly wants to be adopted and go to America….QUICKLY! (as stated in her own words!)

From an agency that previously had her file:  “We brought her to the USA for hosting last summer and her behavior was uncontrollable and violent at times.  She was very unhappy to be here, cried a lot, was very demanding of her host family, and had tantrums every day.  We are not saying this child should not be adopted, but it will take a very patient family and they will need to be well-trained in how to deal with older children who have experienced trauma and who may have an attachment disorder.”

tess-photo-1-june-2015-nov-2016-cropTess was born in February 2004. She has been diagnosed with spina bifida (for which surgery has been done), hydrocephalus, mild cerebellar ataxia, and delayed physical and cognitive development.

Tess walks independently for short distances with a distinctive gait, although she prefers to crawl. She can climb up and down stairs holding the railings, and can throw and kick balls. Tess scribbles with a pencil held in a fisted grasp, stacks blocks in a tower, threads objects onto a fixed stand, and holds scissors but cannot use them functionally. She needs assistance with dressing and bathing and wears diapers.

Mara

Mara-1596Girl, born 2005
T-G
neurodegenerative disease (encephalomyelopathy), scoliosis, global developmental delay (mild-mod.), leg length discrepancy w/low muscle tone, low muscle tone in right hand

Listed: August 3, 2016

Total sweet heart alert! The agency’s team got to see Mara for the second time when they visited in May!

With total politeness she asked for a pack of gummy snacks. A girl that knows what she wants. Soon she was showing off her talent to color! Wow does this girl have skill. Colors all out and organized, color page tilted ever so slightly, and bent into the coloring pose she started her master piece. As we watched she made the most deep-in-thought faces as she decided exactly how she wanted the final product to be.

Mara is such a gentle soul. She has an adorable smirk and wise, knowing eyes. She loves drawing, puzzles and going to school. And she was very, very pleased with her new haircut– she “likes it short because it’s easier to fix and much cooler”. She is so incredibly persistent, such as hard worker. Her foster mom said “She is always like this. She comes home from school and does her work, I never have to remind her. She doesn’t even stop to eat her snack until she has completed all her work.” What an amazing kid!

Mara has a neurodegenerative disease — that is an umbrella term for the progress loss of function of her nervous system. She also has scoliosis. She gets occupational and physical therapy weekly and her foster mom says it has really helped her posture and endurance. Mara walks, goes up and down stairs and can even jump. She has weakness in her arms and legs, but she really impressively compensates when doing daily activities. She is independent with dressing, bathing, and eating.

Unfortunately, we don’t know specifics about Mara’s disease or how fast it will progress. She was seen by a neurologist in 2010, but they were not able to reach an official diagnosis. They refer to it as “encephelomylopathy” in her official paperwork, which is, again, an umbrella term for any disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. Sweet Mara is such a joy. She deserves a family who will be detectives and help determine what is causing her weakness. She deserves a family that will challenge her with puzzles, math problems and lots of therapy. She deserves a family that will be there, whether the disease progresses rapidly or very slowly. She deserves love. She deserves her family.

Mara is a go getter. She is sweet. She is looking for her forever family. Could that be you?

Listed: June 2016

Tamarix is a strong willed girl who is 12 years old. Tamarix came into care as a baby, and was found to have a CHD (ASD – already repaired), a cataract of her right eye (post surgery), and congenital deafness. Tamarix is quite able to care for her own needs. She attends a school for the deaf, where she has learned sign language (CSL). Tamarix prefers to do things her own way (remember the strong willed part?), and can be very stubborn. Tamarix has 2 years to find a family before she ages out. It is difficult to say if Tamarix understands adoption, and what it will mean for her life. We know the great difficulties she will face as she becomes an adult with hearing loss in her country. The agency has videos from January 2016. While videoing, she asked a lot of questions and made sure to watch the video to ensure she looked good before allowing the photos and videos to be seen. She demonstrated an inquisitive nature and a sense of humor during the interaction.

Meet 10 year old Meredith! Meredith is a strong and resilient little girl. She is diagnosed as having right cross foot and a Congenital Heart Defect. Her file does not mention the specific type, but does say- Suggestion: Aneurysm of ventricular septum, no defect; Mild eccentric aortic regurgitation; Right heart larger with tricuspid regurgitation (mild-medium); PH (severe). Meredith is self-sufficient and sweet. She loves to draw and play with others. She is described as lively, talkative, and cheerful. Meredith’s favorite subject in school is English. When Mariah was younger she received a two-way Glenn operation and recovered well. She had a complete ASD; double outlets of right ventricle; severe pulmonary artery stenosis(under the valve), VSD(secondary), AO right arch right descending; and a formation of collateral circulation. She may need another surgery next year.

Listed:  June 18, 2013

Mixed hemangioma of face and neck, Chronic viral hepatitis C, Other specified deforming dorsopathies (carriage defect), Astigmatism, Iron deficiency anemia

Susana is a friendly and sociable girl!  From a family who visited her during hosting:  “She’s a sweet girl, clung to her host mother a lot. Went through the dr appointments like a champ, very brave. Host mom said sometimes it would seem like she would shut down when she’d get upset or things wouldn’t go her way. The tumor is made up of blood vessels and requires more testing but is not cancerous to their knowledge. It will continue to grow if nothing is done and it has already caused problems with her jaw and she’ll require dental work.  Surgery to reroute the blood vessels is needed.”

Daisy

Girl, born July 2006
PRC
Cerebral Palsy, congenital heart disease

Listed:  September 29, 2012

Daisy was already 2 years old at the time of her arrival to the institute. She could neither walk nor speak at the time. She was also very skinny with a large head. Following an initial physical examination, it was found she had a congenital heart disease. She had lackluster complexion and dull eyes. The caretakers thought it was a miracle that she would survive. She has a strong will to live and has a healthy appetite. She eats three meals a day and is not a picky eater.

After a period of care, she slowly gained weight and colored returned to her complexion. Even more encouraging is that she began to speak. She will call the caretaker often, which made the caretakers very happy. She took her first step in May 2009 and surprised everyone when she started walking. Most fortunately is in all this time she has been in our institute, her heart disease has never surfaced. She has been living happily.

Cecily

FAS, Mixed developmental disorders; congenital malformations of ribs; Coloboma of optic disc; strabismus; Mild protein-energy malnutrition

NEW PHOTO DECEMBER 2016

Cecily should be getting ready for kindergarten, not an institution!

Update March 2014:
I LOVE this girl!!!! She is so poised and smart and sweet and totally impressed me when I would interact with her. She’s very formal and polite when she meets new people, but as soon as she would go back into her classroom, she would be playing and laughing and giggling with her friends. She and Cara are friends and play together often. She’s a very typical kid, and often took a leadership role when playing with the other kids. One day, she was playing with my daughter, doing some kind of pretend play, and it was quite fun to watch! She’s in a groupa that does a lot of preschool type work, and and is set up like a classroom so the kids come home with more age- appropriate skills. Our just-turned-3 year old daughter knows how to work puzzles, hold a crayon/pencil properly to write (and is showing pre-writing skills already), understands the concept of counting, etc- not the “norm” for orphanage life! So, kids from this groupa will likely come home knowing how to play appropriately with toys but also prepared to learn in a school-type setting as well.
