Montgomery #

Boy: 2001

Diagnoses:  Triventricular internal hydrocephalus; evacuation of a hematoma; Posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations (AVM); mild to moderate mental delay.

AGES OUT IN JULY 2017!!!

Listed: April 2017

A family must file the I-800A Immigration application before his 16th birthday

His medical diagnoses include Triventricluar internal hydrocephalus; evacuation of a hematoma; Posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations (AVM); mild to moderate mental delay.  Montgomery’s physical development is normal for his age. His psychomotor development does not  correspond to his age. Montgomery moves around by himself but exhibits some clumsiness in his gait due to the underdeveloped gross motor skills. His fine motor skills are not developed – the coordination between arms and legs is compromised.  Montgomery understands and carries out simple instructions. He maintains adequate eye contact and recognizes familiar people from strangers. His abstract thinking does not correspond to his age and he lacks concentration. He has difficulties in reproducing words and concepts. His memory is short-termed and he has difficulties in storing information related to quantity and time.

Montgomery’s emotional development does not correspond to his age as he has a low degree of emotional intellect. No aggression is observed in his behavior. His frustration level is average having in mind that he is a teenager. Sometimes affected behavior is observed when he is unable to complete a task and often he just refuses to complete a given activity.  Montgomery has problems with articulation and has poor vocabulary. He communicates with his peers and adults via verbal and non-verbal means of communication. He prefers to play individually, but he is also willing to take part in group activities and maintains good relationships with his peers and the staff. He seeks emotional warmth and makes physical contact with the others – taking somebody by the hand and hugging. His speech is hard to understand – he uses short and simple sentences that are badly constructed.  Montgomery is interested in creative activities – modeling and drawing. He is motivated and willing to acquire everyday self-service skills.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, he will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for him.

Kevin

KevinBoy, born March 2007
PRC
possible muscular dystrophy

Kevin’s story is so heartbreaking. He was brought to the orphanage when he was 4 years old; scared, lonely, and confused. They decided to give him an IQ/DQ test just a few months after he arrived; he did not score very high (not surprising at all, given the trauma of the past few months!). He appeared to be in good health overall. Kevin came to the U.S. as part of an agency’s host program. At that time, he was active, healthy-looking, and doing well. When he returned to his orphanage, his physical health began to decline. Currently, Kevin is unable to walk any distance at all without falling. He requires help to get up off the floor, or from the toilet. He can only eat soft foods that are easy to chew. There is a strong possibility that Kevin has muscular dystrophy. Throughout it all, Kevin has remained a positive outlook, a loving nature, and a great compassion for others. Kevin is now 8 years old. He is currently in a foster home at the orphanage, and takes care of the younger children there. Kevin needs a family of his own, in an area that can provide him the care and treatments he will need.

He has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, bilateral second to third degree neuro-sensory hearing loss, strabismus, left-sided cryptorchidism, and absence of speech. Ashton has been fitted with hearing aids for both ears that allow him to hear speech and sounds at louder volumes, but unfortunately, Ashton does not like to keep his hearing aids on.

Ashton’s overall development is delayed. He recently moved to a new orphanage where he now receives regular speech and physical therapy and is showing progress. In 2013, Ashton has learned to walk a few steps independently, due in large part to own his determination and desire to be mobile. He understands what he is told and can follow instructions. Ashton’s social skills are not well developed and he struggles to participate in group games, but he is described as a smiley and friendly boy.

Update February 2017: Ashton attends a boarding school for hearing-impaired children where he has learned to communicate perfectly using sign language. He wears hearing aids. Ashton is potty-trained, can dress and undress without assistance, and his ability to walk has improved considerably over the last few years. Ashton is a tidy, sweet and smiley boy.

Mild cerebral palsy

Shia is being hosted in the US this winter!

Shia is a little introverted, but he is friendly and willing to connect with others after a while. His health and intellectual developments are average. However, his motor abilities are somewhat behind those of other children. When he moves about, the left side of his body is a little limited due to his minor cerebral palsy.

He is currently in special education in his foster family. A particular note from the head of the foster family: Shia is afraid of small animals. We hope Shia finds a forever family soon!

Updated: Jan 2, 2015:  Shia is a happy, sweet, affectionate, and playful boy who is easy to get along with. He is a bit shy, but he is beginning to open up more. He enjoys reading, drawing, playing with his host sisters, chasing them with a squirt gun, and playing video games. He is becoming more talkative and more outgoing. He loves to be tickled and enjoys laughing with his host sisters. He is very calm; he has not had any tantrums and has not yelled or screamed at all. He is a bit fearful of animals, but is starting to pet the host family’s dog. He is a great eater and is not picky at all; he likes pizza, fruit, vegetables, rice, meat, and pasta; he actually does not like using chopsticks. Nigel

nigel-video-still-feb-2017-feb-2017Nigel Photo 2 Oct-2014Nigel was born prematurely at 29 weeks gestation in February of 2007, weighing 1500g. At the age of two months, Nigel was diagnosed with hypertensive syndrome and deformation of the head. A neurologist has also stated that his cerebellum is small and that is why he had some problems with coordination (in the past).

Nigel was brought to the orphanage when he was 5 months old and lived with his parents until that time. At the orphanage his issues with coordination improved and at present there are no concerns. He is able to walk, run and is very active. After being placed in the orphanage it was also found that he has a hearing impairment. He has not had a full hearing screen but it has been suggested that his impairment is rather severe. His caretakers are apprehensive of anesthesia needing to be used to check the issue further and will wait to see if there are other options. Nigel also has vision impairment, but he does not wear glasses at this time as he ends up breaking them. He is described as a happy boy, who is also very neat. He does not like when something is not in its place or the table is dirty or his clothes are dirty. He lets the caretakers know about it and ask them to clean it. He does not speak and does not say sounds, but is able to let his caretakers know what he wants by gestures. He loves going outside and is also very friendly.

Update February 2017: Nigel has come a long way since transferring to his current orphanage. He wears hearing aids, follows instructions, is described as neat and clean, and participates actively in games. He especially enjoys his occupational therapy sessions and crafts. In new video, Nigel can be seen answering questions with sign language and counting.

He is very small for his age; he was 6, but looked like about 4 years old. He was definitely more mentally delayed than the other boys in his group, but he could answer questions appropriately, followed directions, could eat by himself and get dressed to go outside with little help. One time we played a game like ring-around-the-rosy, and he knew the words to the song and how to play along. He loved when my husband lifted him up high in the air. His eyesight is poor, and they said he is blind in one eye. He had trouble doing a puzzle, but we weren’t sure if it was a cognitive issue, or because he couldn’t see the pieces well. They told us he has some sort of heart condition, which might require surgery. We did see him showing rocking behavior at times. He got along well with the other kids, although he often played by himself, probably because of cognitive differences. He is so precious and really needs a family!

From a family who met him in October 2012:  Kristopher is a super-sweet boy who is 5 but looks 2 and is happy ALL the time.  He needs to live near a large medical facility, have heart surgery (unless it’s too late), and probably needs a small family that can commit to pretty full care for him. He is darling!

From a family who met him in spring 2014:   Kristopher is such a sweet boy, and I think he would have so much potential in a loving home!

31112181246 EmeryBoy, born July 2007

Convergent squint (operated), slight mental delay, fetal alcohol syndrome, epileptic reaction (affective-respiratory seizures), nanism of somatogenic genesis, poor speech

November 2015:  *** Emery facing imminent transfer.  He urgently needs a family!  ***

Listed: December 6, 2013

Info from a family that met him 10/15:
He has a lot of energy, but he listens well to the nannies. They often reminded him to behave in passing – though it was more of a reminder that they were watching than because he was acting up. He interacts well with other children though he did not engage me (adult) very much. He is delayed, but has potential in a family. Super cute. He needs a family, there is so much hope and potential for him that he will not get in an orphanage. He would do well with older children to set an example.

Joel

JoelBoy, born March 2007
PRC
cerebral hypoplasia and epilepsy

Joel’s motor and intellectual development at present:- he can walk alone, go upstairs and downstairs holding the wall, and can put on pants and shoes by himself. Joel is quiet, gregarious, and very curious. He is very fond of playing toy cars with partners and most interested in playing games with adults. He feels safe, happy, and satisfied in the institute with the caretakers’ careful nursing. He has close and intimate relationship with the caretakers. Agency staff recently met him and said this about him: Joel is a happy child. He has lived in the orphanage for several months and does not attend school. He can count to 3. He has not learned English. He likes to watch television and sing along with people on TV. When he entered the orphanage they believed he had epilepsy, but he has never had a seizure. They also said he had hydrocephalus but even without any treatment, it appears to have cured itself. Even his hair has grown in and is much healthier since his arrival. Two things noted were that he runs slower than the other children and when he gets a high fever, he can’t even stand up. He is potty trained.

Rupert

Rupert (2)

Rupert (1)Boy, born July 2007
PRC
Blind, Autistic Tendencies

Rupert is blind and participates in a program that provides high quality care and education for orphans who are blind or visually impaired. Every child has an individual education plan and the goal is to allow them to be independent and live life to the fullest. Rupert is a lovely little boy who has autistic tendencies and learning needs. He is in a primary school class for children with special needs where he gets lots of one-on-one time with his teachers and he has speech therapy classes where he has been making incredible progress. Rupert is a very active little boy who loves exploring his environment. Like most children, he can turn anything into a toy! He really enjoys meeting new people, and will often grab the hand of a visitor and twirl around, or pull an adult to the floor so he can climb all over them. He loves to be tickled and cuddled. He is also a good dancer and gets really excited whenever his Ayi puts on Chinese music. His little legs and feet move to the rhythm! Rupert prefers one on one contact, and has a hard time sitting still for activities. He is very active and prefers to run around and play. He enjoys being snuggled at night and read a children’s story before he goes to sleep. Rupert has a beautiful smile with adorable, mischievous dimples.

Jovan (L)

Jovan B262Boy, born June 2007
mixed developmental disorder and FAS

Listed: September 24, 2013

Update from Dec 2012:
After arrival the boy had attachment difficulty to the other children, had hard time while sleeping, was angry and upset, would not play with other children, his language was not clear, would cry without reason, would not eat and only chew the food, had difficulty walking.

Now Jovan’s language is clear, he has learned to dress himself, and washes himself without help.  His walking skill improved very much, his walk is good, runs, walks up and down the stairway, but due to the delayed development he sometimes makes movements with his hands and it seems that it is hard to control this.

Jovan is very good boy, likes to be closed to a person, communicates with social worker, is sensitive. He has good memory, likes to tell stories and is very happy when the care giver is listening to him and asks questions as he likes to answer the questions. Is able to learn a short poem by heart, likes to play and participate at the musical activities. Has a very good sense for rhythm, dances. Likes to work with puzzles, and coloring books. Can name animals, colors, knows letters and numbers, is very noticeable and polite. But sometimes is upset and stubborn, it is observed if communication with him is gentle his stubbornness disappears and he becomes of a very good mood.

Josiah

Cerebral palsy, seizures

Listed: July 21, 2011

Josiah can be very interactive and can comprehend what is being said to him. He also has seizures that are being controlled with medication. He loves when people sing songs with him.  Josiah is a very happy and loving boy. He is always full of smiles.-Josiah-

Josiah can hold his head up, and is practicing learning how to sit, although he has not yet mastered this skill on his own. Josiah is very strong and his muscles are often tight; he is receiving therapy to help him relax and control his muscles better. Josiah is nonverbal, but can still express several of his needs very well; he will cry if he wants attention and will happily reward you with a smile when you talk with or sing to him.

From someone who works with him:  We have had the privilege of caring for Josiah for 3 years. He is the oldest child in our care and has been with us longer than any other child. Josiah was abandoned at a nearby hospital when he was 1. Josiah has cerebral palsy and requires special care and attention. He has limited control over his movement and needs support when sitting. For 3 years, our nannies and staff have cared for Josiah, fed him and bathed him. Ask any person who has cared for Josiah though and they will say that they are the one who was blessed.

When you are with Josiah, it is clear that God’s love resides in Josiah. Josiah can’t talk, but he loves to smile and interact with anyone who will talk to him. Josiah cannot sing like most of us, but each day during nanny prayer and singing Josiah joins in with a big smile. Our deep desire is for Josiah to join his forever family through adoption. We have had difficulty finding that family, but we know that God has a plan for Josiah . We also know that where ever he goes, Josiah will be a blessing as his loved ones bless and care for him.

Jared

jared-2016BOY, born May 2007
This handsome young man, with dark hair and dark eyes, was born with a rare genetic condition called Stickler Syndrome.  His medical records also indicate microcephaly, a common symptom of SS.

Listed: June 3, 2010

Update May 2016: Jared has been transferred a while ago from his baby orphanage.

Individuals with Stickler syndrome experience a range of signs and symptoms. Some people have no signs and symptoms; others have some or all of the features described below. In addition, each feature of this syndrome may vary from subtle to severe.

A characteristic feature of Stickler syndrome is a somewhat flattened facial appearance. This is caused by underdeveloped bones in the middle of the face, including the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose. A particular group of physical features, called the Pierre Robin sequence, is common in children with Stickler syndrome. Robin sequence includes a U-shaped or sometimes V-shaped cleft palate (an opening in the roof of the mouth) with a tongue that is too large for the space formed by the small lower jaw. Children with a cleft palate are also prone to ear infections and occasionally swallowing difficulties.

Many people with Stickler syndrome are very nearsighted (described as having high myopia) because of the shape of the eye. People with eye involvement are prone to increased pressure within the eye (ocular hypertension) which could lead to glaucoma and tearing or detachment of the light-sensitive retina of the eye (retinal detachment). Cataract may also present as an ocular complication associated with Stickler’s Syndrome. The jelly-like substance within the eye (the vitreous humour) has a distinctive appearance in the types of Stickler syndrome associated with the COL2A1 and COL11A1 genes. As a result regular appointments to a specialist ophthalmologist are advised. The type of Stickler syndrome associated with the COL11A2 gene does not affect the eye.

People with this syndrome have problems that affect things other than the eyes and ears. Arthritis, abnormality to ends of long bones, vertebrae abnormality, curvature of the spine, scoliosis, joint pain, and double jointedness are all problems that can occur in the bones and joints. Physical characteristics of people with Stickler can include flat cheeks, flat nasal bridge, small upper jaw, pronounced upper lip groove, small lower jaw, and palate abnormalities, these tend to lessen with age and normal growth and palate abnormalities can be treated with routine surgery.

Another sign of Stickler syndrome is mild to severe hearing loss that, for some people, may be progressive (see hearing loss with craniofacial syndromes). The joints of affected children and young adults may be very flexible (hypermobile). Arthritis often appears at an early age and worsens as a person gets older. Learning difficulties, not intelligence, can also occur because of hearing and sight impairments if the school is not informed and the student is not assisted within the learning environment.

Stickler syndrome is thought to be associated with an increased incidence of mitral valve prolapse of the heart, although no definitive research supports this.

Jared may be available with Nate and Janie.
