HIV+, 10+

HIV is a virus that claims many innocent lives when children do not have access to antiretroviral medications. Fortunately, it is treatable and the children who have access to medication and adhere to their treatment can live indefinitely without developing AIDS and can live long and full lives. HIV is now considered a chronic but manageable disease, even easier to treat than pediatric diabetes.

HIV can NOT be spread through casual/household contact. HIV is not spread through hugging, kissing, shaking hands, sharing toys, sneezing, coughing, sharing food, sharing drinks, bathing, swimming or any other casual way. It has been proven that HIV and AIDS can only be spread through sexual contact, birth, breastfeeding and intravenously (such as used needles and blood transfusions).

Children born to women with the virus have a chance of becoming HIV positive due to mother-to-child-transmission. These children are innocent carriers of the virus. The children you see below are currently living in institutions. Sadly, if they end up aging out of institutional life, there is a high likelihood they will be ill on the streets in a life of crime.

Recent laws in the US and Canada allow for these children to be adopted. Being in a loving family helps them access medical care and gives them the opportunity to have a normal, healthy, productive life. They can go to college, get married, give birth to healthy babies and live long enough to meet their grandchildren.

Here is an overview of the medical aspects of living with a child with HIV.

HIV

From a family who met him, May 2014:
Raul is a very engaging young man.  He is full of smiles and really likes learning English.  He has a few words and some sentences already his belt.  He will try to have a conversation with you and will repeat what you say in an effort to understand you.  He prefers to be in the presence of adults verse many of his peers.  He is very professional in a business-like manner when he speaks with you and how he dresses.  You will often find him in his school uniform.  He loves to carry around his green brief case with a frog on it.  He is ready to make a deal.  He is not one to be found playing sports or soccer on the field but engaging in conversation or helping the adult supervisors in the boarding school.  He is very well liked by the staff and helpful to them.  He loves swimming and just being near you.  He is very receptive to hugs and willing to give and take them.  He is one to grab your hand, hold it while you walk and it just makes his day!

Devora

Devora

Girl, born February 2002
Mental delay, HIV

Creative, eager

Devora is a real sweetie pie! She loves to have her head rubbed, and enjoys being tickled. Her smiles and giggles are absolutely heart melting! She does not talk, stand, or walk as far as I could tell. Her idea of mischief is to kick off a shoe or hide her arm inside of her sweatshirt, and she’d giggle as these things were corrected.

She seemed to find it very amusing when I would ask her where her hand was, then say “There it is” as I removed it from inside of her shirt. This became a game, and she would giggle as she hid her arm again as soon as I removed it from inside of her shirt. She is a very content little girl, and something as simple as a spiky ball could put a big grin on her face. I never saw her upset as long as she was allowed to play in either her bed or her chair, but she would become upset if I tried to move her to a more unfamiliar area to play.

Zebadiah can walk, run and jump freely, understand adults directions and has good self care skills. He studies in Grade 3 and has average marks. He likes to draw, knows simple English letters and has a good sense of observation.

Jeanette

JeanetteGirl, born 2003
HIV, strabismus, congenital cataract (blind in right eye)
Mild to moderate mental delays, FAS, tuberculosis of the lymph nodes

Update March 2013:

Jeanette was exposed to alcohol prenatally.  She has issues with impulsivity/understanding consequences.   She is well-liked where she is, but needs additional support to succeed in school.  It’s recommended that Jeanette would do great with older children whom could help correct her behavior and could model appropriate behavioral for her.

She is very sweet and loves to draw, and color.  She pays great attention to detail in her drawings and when she is doing something she like to do like drawing she can sit still for a very long time doing it. She is also very funny and dramatic. She loves to act and dance and sing and make goofy faces and act silly to make people laugh. She could do well in a family but they would need to be prepared for FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).

Ethan

Ethan Oct 2013 (3)Ethan 2013Boy, born November 1999
HIV, astigmatism

Pics from 2013 – he wants to be adopted!

Ethan is in the same orphanage with several other available children. Interested and approved families could adopt multiple children together.

From a family who met him in Nov. & Dec. 2013:
Ethan is older than our daughter and so wasn’t in her group. However, he clearly enjoys interacting with the younger kids, and he came into her group room at least two or three evenings each week to play-wrestle and to play games/video games with the younger kids. We met him our first weekend with our daughter, when Ethan came outside for about 2 hours on Saturday to play with the younger kids. He impressed me immensely in that short amount of time. He was gentle and kind with them, laughing and joking. Not once did he display any mean or bullying behavior, which some of the other older boys did. He was very respectful and polite to my husband and me, as well as toward the teachers. That behavior continued every time we saw him for the next six weeks. He especially likes play wrestling with the younger boys, although he is always very gentle with them. Many times he would be play wrestling with one of the younger, much smaller boys, and I’d see him get to a position where he could have easily taken the play too far and hurt the younger boy, but not once did he do so. He always gently set down the younger boy with a big smile. As a result, he is a favorite with the younger boys. He’s also a bit goofy, in an understated way. For example, he likes to wear silly clothing combinations just to get a reaction from the other children. Once he was walking around with his skinny jeans rolled up his legs to look like shorts, but with huge gigantic cuffs. The other kids thought it was hilarious! Ethan told our daughter how much he wants a family. He will be a huge blessing and a wonderful addition to the family that chooses him.
