HIV+, 10+

HIV is a virus that claims many innocent lives when children do not have access to antiretroviral medications. Fortunately, it is treatable and the children who have access to medication and adhere to their treatment can live indefinitely without developing AIDS and can live long and full lives. HIV is now considered a chronic but manageable disease, even easier to treat than pediatric diabetes.

HIV can NOT be spread through casual/household contact. HIV is not spread through hugging, kissing, shaking hands, sharing toys, sneezing, coughing, sharing food, sharing drinks, bathing, swimming or any other casual way. It has been proven that HIV and AIDS can only be spread through sexual contact, birth, breastfeeding and intravenously (such as used needles and blood transfusions).

Children born to women with the virus have a chance of becoming HIV positive due to mother-to-child-transmission. These children are innocent carriers of the virus. The children you see below are currently living in institutions. Sadly, if they end up aging out of institutional life, there is a high likelihood they will be ill on the streets in a life of crime.

Recent laws in the US and Canada allow for these children to be adopted. Being in a loving family helps them access medical care and gives them the opportunity to have a normal, healthy, productive life. They can go to college, get married, give birth to healthy babies and live long enough to meet their grandchildren.

Here is an overview of the medical aspects of living with a child with HIV.

Raul

HIV

From a family who met him, May 2014:
Raul is a very engaging young man.  He is full of smiles and really likes learning English.  He has a few words and some sentences already his belt.  He will try to have a conversation with you and will repeat what you say in an effort to understand you.  He prefers to be in the presence of adults verse many of his peers.  He is very professional in a business-like manner when he speaks with you and how he dresses.  You will often find him in his school uniform.  He loves to carry around his green brief case with a frog on it.  He is ready to make a deal.  He is not one to be found playing sports or soccer on the field but engaging in conversation or helping the adult supervisors in the boarding school.  He is very well liked by the staff and helpful to them.  He loves swimming and just being near you.  He is very receptive to hugs and willing to give and take them.  He is one to grab your hand, hold it while you walk and it just makes his day!

Devora

Devora

Girl, born February 2002
Mental delay, HIV

Creative, eager

Devora is a real sweetie pie! She loves to have her head rubbed, and enjoys being tickled. Her smiles and giggles are absolutely heart melting! She does not talk, stand, or walk as far as I could tell. Her idea of mischief is to kick off a shoe or hide her arm inside of her sweatshirt, and she’d giggle as these things were corrected.

She seemed to find it very amusing when I would ask her where her hand was, then say “There it is” as I removed it from inside of her shirt. This became a game, and she would giggle as she hid her arm again as soon as I removed it from inside of her shirt. She is a very content little girl, and something as simple as a spiky ball could put a big grin on her face. I never saw her upset as long as she was allowed to play in either her bed or her chair, but she would become upset if I tried to move her to a more unfamiliar area to play.

Handsome Zebadiah was found when he was 4 years old. He likes to play with other children and he know how to share. He can express his needs, but has difficulty with pronunciation. He doesn’t speak too often and has difficulty expressing his ideas, but he does get along well with others, respects his teachers and is popular with his caretakers and other children. Zebadiah can walk, run and jump freely, understand adults directions and has good self care skills. He studies in Grade 3 and has average marks. He likes to draw, knows simple English letters and has a good sense of observation.

Zebadiah is a good kid who is praised by his foster parents and teachers. He is waiting for his forever family to find him and help him reach his full potential.

Jeanette

JeanetteGirl, born 2003
HIV, strabismus, congenital cataract (blind in right eye)
Mild to moderate mental delays, FAS, tuberculosis of the lymph nodes

Update March 2013:

Jeanette was exposed to alcohol prenatally.  She has issues with impulsivity/understanding consequences.   She is well-liked where she is, but needs additional support to succeed in school.  It’s recommended that Jeanette would do great with older children whom could help correct her behavior and could model appropriate behavioral for her.

She is very sweet and loves to draw, and color.  She pays great attention to detail in her drawings and when she is doing something she like to do like drawing she can sit still for a very long time doing it. She is also very funny and dramatic. She loves to act and dance and sing and make goofy faces and act silly to make people laugh. She could do well in a family but they would need to be prepared for FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).

Alexandra

AlexandraGirl, born 2003
Slight mental delay, HIV

Information from the family who adopted her close friend:

According to our daughter she is very sweet, she is neat (as in keeps things organized and clean), she loves to help, and she was a very loyal and good friend. I do know that after a while, the way she was treated at the orphanage caused her to cry often and thus they sent her to a different school. My daughter was similar and is doing wonderfully … her aunt has gone to see her once or twice and worries about her condition there.

Eloise

EloiseEloiseGuardian AngelGirl, born August 2004
HIV+

From a family who met her in 2014:

Eloise is such a lovely girl, inside and out! The pictures truly don’t do her justice. She is absolutely beautiful and just has the sweetest personality. She is a little shy, but also very open to interacting and you can tell she is just aching for connection.

She was probably the oldest child at this orphanage. We are certain she is still there because of how amazing she is with the little ones. She would do awesome in a family with young children! She was like a doting older sister to all the other children and seemed especially fond of the babies and toddlers.

We saw her learning to cross stitch and she also has some pretty awesome gymnastics moves she’s come up with on the swing set! We hope she can find a family quickly because we aren’t sure how much longer they’ll let her stay at the baby house and older child internats can be absolutely awful and traumatic.

My husband and I both felt she would be a fantastic daughter for anyone and wished we could bring her home too! She will bring such joy and love to a family! More pictures and video available for seriously inquiring families.

Sabin

Boy, born October 2004

HIV-infection, IV clinical stage, no signs of AIDS, biochemistry test is good; congenital hydrocephaly (shunting); myatonia disorders; disco-visual nerve subatrophy; myelinic cone fibers; hypertrophy of palatine tonsils; two anomalous chords of ventricle; biliary dyskinesia; slight mental delay with minimal behavioral disorders, night enuresis, organic emotional instable disorders. Probable FAS.

He is said to be very careful and orderly, so he is probably a kid who does very well with routines and structure.  He is also described as very helpful.
