Corban

Corban-001Boy born March, 2009
PRC
Down syndrome

Corban’s physical capacity and mental development are delayed comparatively, due to his Down syndrome. As he grows older he has learned to roll over, crawl, stand by holding onto supports and walk by holding onto rails. Now he can walk forward with one of his hands led, he can distinguish familiar people and strangers. Seeing familiar people he can smile and greet them. He knows to be cooperative when dressed, give the clothes when asked, is a lovely little boy.

Corban is gentle, quiet, has a ready smile. He has Down syndrome, but it does not influence his happy life. He likes to play with toys, listen to music, can wave arms following rhythms which looks very adorable. He is willing to play games with kids, likes toys making sound, will laugh aloud when playing happily. Seeing strangers he will cry noisily because of being unfamiliar with them in the beginning. He can play with you gradually, is integrated into the games you bring to him, is a sensible good child!

Tomas is in urgent need of a family!  He is already 7 years old and needs to get HOME.  He has heart disease and recently needed a pacemaker installed.  He can stand a little with a walker but cannot walk. He can sit up on his own. He can only babble and cannot talk. He does smile a little bit at his caregivers. I don’t believe he is able to feed himself. He needs 100% help with all his activities.   Tomas would thrive in a family setting, with access to all the medical care and therapies he really needs!

Meet darling Douglas! Douglas has down syndrome, a Congenital Heart Defect- PDA (funnel shape), and possible CP. Douglas came into care at the age of five and has only been living in the orphanage for a little over a year. At the time he came into care, he was walking independently, but was not speaking. Douglas can now eat independently with a spoon and drink from a cup. He can go up and down stairs on his own as well. Douglas is not toilet trained yet and he does need help getting dressed, but he will cooperate and hold up his hands when the caretaker help dress him. He can make sounds, but cannot say specific words. When Douglas is not happy, he will sit on the ground and cry. He loves to be cuddled and snuggled and that usually cheers him up pretty quickly. He recently started attending pre-school in the orphanage and is said to be able to sit nicely and quietly listen to the teacher. Douglas is described as an introverted boy who loves to walk around the living area and take walks with his caretakers after supper. He loves to bounce balls back and forth with his caretakers and friends, though he does have difficulty catching the ball sometimes. Douglas is waiting for a family to see him, bring him home, and love him forever!

Down syndrome, specific mixed developmental disorder, features of autism, farsightedness, atopic dermatitis, functional heart murmur, hydrocephalus. Due to a difficult birth, he was born with pneumonia, and intubated for a few days.

Listed: July 7, 2013

From a family who met him in 2015:  “Heinrich ran right up to me and asked to go up, and then enjoyed a play session full of jumping. He definitely has a lot of energy, and I was amazed at his gross motor skills. He loved the play area’s rocking horse!”

UPDATE as of June 2015:  Heinrich continues to make great improvements. He is communicating and asked to be picked up. He is strong, happy, and loves attention.

Update as of April 2013:  His development is delayed; he recently started to walk without help, but not yet steady. Emotions are weak, play activity is primitive, throws away toys, turns them around, puts into the mouth, sucks his fingers, makes stereotypic movements with his head, swings.

He’s not yet speaking, and it’s possible he has a hearing delay.  He eats with help, does not yet holds a spoon or the bottle, still it is hard for him to chew a hard food. The level of understanding is low, does not have motivation to make an activity.

Colby 2016ColbyBoy, born August 2008
PRC

Listed: Feb 22, 2013

Colby is a precious boy who has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (Congenital Heart Defect). From observation, the heart condition has no obvious affect on daily life.

Colby is active, extroverted, and smiles often. When Colby hears music on the radio, he dances with joy. He does well in dance class and has a good sense of rhythm. Colby also enjoys playing games with other children and likes to watch cartoons.

Update 2016:
Colby is very good at imitating; in his music and dance class, he learned a whole entire dance routine after being shown the first time! He has come a long way since his early days at the orphanage. At first, he was withdrawn and did not actively engage with others. Nowadays, he’s quite active and extroverted—he actively participates in all classroom activities. Although he was diagnosed with Down syndrome and has cognitive delays, his language ability has greatly improved. Every day before school, he’ll wave and say goodbye to his foster mom. When he comes home from school, he’ll say “hello mother” and “hello father” in his native language. Colby knows all the names of his foster family members, and can name common objects and foods. He has some challenges with expressive language but he’s quite good at understanding others. He has great self-care skills such as putting on his clothes and shoes, using the restroom, brushing his teeth, washing his face, and feeding himself. Colby gets along well with other children and likes to play games with them. His report states that he has a congenital heart defect but that it does not have any obvious effects on his day-to-day life; he hasn’t received surgery for his heart as of May 2016. An agency staff member met him on a recent Journey of Hope trip to China and found that he’s quite talented and showed off his martial art and rollerblading skills! He can speak words and simple sentences, but also communicates through pointing, touch, and body language. He’s been living with his foster family for about 5 years and they shared that he’s a great helper around the house and loves outdoor activities.

Codey

CodeyBoy, born June 2008
PRC
Down Syndrome

Date of Observation: May 2014

Codey is a cute little almost 6 year old boy with Down Syndrome. His functioning, described as “medium” by a caregiver, was corrected by his teacher, who described him as “better than medium”! He can learn, and he speaks in meaningful language.

Codey is very cute, although he was very shy with us, strangers. He needs some physical help. He wears diapers and he needs some help dressing but he is making progress. He is described as having “good focus”, “curious”, and “naughty”. The latter has a very positive connotation in China, where naughty means, smart, funny and clever. He plays very well and interactively with the other children. It is obvious that he is really loved by the staff and his teacher. Codey has been healthy, with no significant medical history or surgeries. He looks clean, well dressed, well nourished, and well cared for. The most touching part of Codey is his attachment to another child in his group, Sasha, a little girl his age who also has Down Syndrome. They have a very close bond with each other. Cody attends a special class in the orphanage where her is taught by a special ed teacher, along with a group of peers who have DS. This little boy appears to have a lot of potential. There are videos of Codey.

The agency has a $2000 grant available for Codey.

Robinson

Boy, born June 2009
PRC
Down syndrome

Robinson is diagnosed with down syndrome. His file reports that he does go to a kindergarten- likely in the orphanage. If he doesn’t go to school, his foster mom takes him out to eat breakfast, where he will eat noodles and steamed stuffed buns. If the weather is nice, he plays in the yard. He takes a two hour nap each day. After he wakes up, he watches cartoons or will play with other children in the yard. He then eats dinner and some fruit after that. He has deep sleep. His foster mom watches his facial expressions to determine if he needs to use the bathroom. She then asks him if he needs to go. If he says yes, she will take him to the toilet. He can take his pants off by himself, but needs help putting his pants back on. Now that he goes to school, his language is better than before. He has good imitating ability. Every morning he sings children’s songs he learned at kindergarten. He can put on and take off clothes with help, can go up and down stairs by himself; and he can eat without help (though he eats slowly since he can easily spill). He likes to smile at acquaintances. Sometimes he will call mama or nana and then continue to do his things. if you ask him to share his food, he will feed you and smile at you. Neighbors always say he is a quiet boy who has a ready smile. During summer vacation, his foster mom often takes him outside to let him experience more fresh things and to see and learn new things.

Alan

Alan-update2Boy, born January 2010

Down syndrome

Alan just turned three years old, and although he can stand by himself and crawl all over the furniture, he is not quite yet able to walk. His foster father has been taking him on tricycle rides to strengthen his legs and improve his balance. Alan seems to be enjoying himself immensely!

Alan-update

Alan is speaking some family words such as “mama,”, “uncle,” and “sister” and is learning his colors and how to build a tower. Also, Alan can turn the pages of a book and is quite curious. Based on our reports, we can just imagine this handsome little guy snuggling on the lap of a mom or dad of his very own and read book after book. He will surely be a happy addition to some very lucky family!

Update 2014:
Alan has truly blossomed! He is very smart and also very clever! With his foster mother’s assistance he can count to ten; she is also teaching him colors and shapes. With his new found knowledge, Alan believes he is now a teacher and he can often be found teaching his younger foster sister a school lesson.

One of Alan’s favorite things to do is to play outside. Although he wishes to play outside everyday, he knows when it rains he has to stay inside and always lets his foster mother know this. Alan has great physical strength and he can run and jump. His favorite game to play is hide and seek. Alan is also a little ham and whenever the camera comes out, he will stop what he is doing and pose. He also has some pretty impressive dance moves. As soon as the music starts playing he will start dancing by shaking his hips.

Liam

Boy, born 2008
PRC
Down syndrome, Heart Disease

This playful, adventurous, sweet boy is Liam! He is 8 years old and will absolutely steal your heart. Liam can be quiet and introverted at times, but he is generally a very friendly kid! Whenever volunteers come to the orphanage he cannot wait to take pictures with them. He seems to have an eye for photography – he loves being in pictures and taking pictures of others. He especially likes to come up with funny poses! He can play games cooperatively with other kids, and he has a lot of fun building all kinds of structures out of blocks. Liam likes to be creative and has quite the imagination!

Liam had the opportunity to visit the US as part of the Winter 2016 China Hosting Program! He spent 3 weeks playing, learning, and laughing with his host family. Here is what they shared with us:

“Liam is a very happy little guy with the most contagious giggles you’ll ever hear, and I have no doubt that he’ll bring much joy to his forever family.  He is a very energetic and active little guy who enjoys playing outside (at the playground, swinging and going down the slide are favorite activities), but he also is great at entertaining himself indoors by looking at books or “writing” (making marks on paper). He has a great imagination and especially loves to pretend to cook! He plays well with others but just as often seems to enjoy playing independently.

Liam also has a bit of a mischievous streak — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but he does sometimes need help redirecting some of his energy to a more positive activity. I did see improvement throughout his time here with his ability to be redirected, and discipline-wise, short “time-ins” where we sat together quietly on the floor seemed to be most effective.

Liam LOVES to eat…And would eat ALL the time if I let him. He is not picky at all; he’s eaten everything I’ve given him — fruit, veggies, yogurt, meat, pasta, etc. The hardest thing for him is being done with a meal/snack — even if he has had plenty to eat, he still wants more. This does seem to be getting a bit better, though.

It was fun having Liam here & seeing him come out of his shell! He definitely keeps me on my toes because he is very active/into everything, but he has a great imagination that has been fun to watch. He also really has done a GREAT job transitioning into family life/life in the US.”

You can see more photos and videos from Liam’s time in the US on his advocacy page.

Liam’s nannies tell us he is learning self-care skills. His recent health has been good, and he is not currently showing any symptoms of heart disease. Could you be Liam’s forever family?

Blaine

Boy, born 2009

Downs Syndrome, right cryptochordism,  inguinal hernia with  undescended testicle

Listed: May 2017

A family recently met sweet Blaine while adopting their son:  My son came home in December (2016) and talks non-stop about his friend. He talks about how this little one was nice to him, gave him food and shared his blanket, etc. He also talks about how mean the nannies are to this little boy. My son doesn’t have anything to say about anyone else there except they aren’t nice. Initially I took it with a grain of salt but there is another little girl adopted from there in the last year who has told her family the exact same thing. Can you imagine the heart on this little one? I adore him. I am more than willing to talk to anyone about him!

update: He has strong self-care skills!

Blaine is described by the other children from his SWI as sweet, kind, caring and helpful. Several children who are home now continue to speak about his kindness and hope that he finds a family soon. He is a gentle soul who is said to have “strong self-care abilities”. Everyone in his orphanage calls him, “good baby”. According to his SWI, he likes to communicate with people and is kind to people and he likes music and dancing. He is very tiny and was timid in person when several families met him. He patiently waited to see his little friend who had just been adopted. Blaine has Down syndrome, right cryptorchidism and a right inguinal hernia but is reported to be otherwise healthy. A family will be so blessed to add this treasure to their family!

Down syndrome and missing fingers on left hand

From a family who met him:  “Sweet Olivier! I had so much fun with him when I was in his orphanage and am saddened that his family hasn’t found him yet. This little guy was just incredible!!! Oliver was born in March of 2011 and completely stole my heart. This little boy has Down Syndrome and a partial left hand. As the mother of a child with a similar limb difference I can tell you missing a few fingers isn’t going to slow Oliver down at all! Just by spending a few hours with him I got the feeling he is a very bright and curious little boy. He even tried to imitate me speaking English by repeating the word “book.” You can see for yourself by clicking watching this video:http://vimeo.com/78018326

Rhylan is a curious baby boy with rosy red cheeks! He has been under the care of a foster family who is very active with therapy and making sure he is loved and cared for. He has just turned two and loves the outdoors this summer. He also enjoys playing with colorful toys!

He seems to be in a family that
genuinely cares for his well-being and is very interested in helping him achieve his milestones. Careful, you don’t fall in love with his impish grin!
