Autumn #380 OD

380 AutumnGirl, born October 2005
Blind (fourth degree of Retinopathy), Delayed physical and neuropsychological development

This 7 years old girl can walk independently. She attends special school and follows simple instructions. She likes the adults and wishes to spend most of her time in the group with children. She is calm while traveling or when visiting a place she hasn’t been to before. She likes musical toys. She knows her name and react to it but doesn’t always like it when someone addresses her directly. She makes sounds which might be interpreted as joyful or expressing displeasure. She doesn’t speak, she repeats syllables in imitation – “pa-pa”, “ma-ma-ma”, “da-da-da”, “o-pa”.

She shows preference to food – she likes sweets, pudding, and chicken and already tries to eat independently but needs adult’s assistance. She is fed by a spoon. She hasn’t yet mastered her skills to get dresses and undressed. She takes her shoes off.

Danielle

danielle2Girl, born July 2004
PRC
Diagnosis: Pigmentation of skin

From her latest updates received from China, it was reported that she is currently in foster care and is getting along well with her foster parents and other family members. In school, she is described as a very well-behaved student who follows the classroom rules and gets along nicely with her classmates. Danielle enjoys playing hide and seek, bean-bag games, singing, and dancing. Danielle’s special need is a large pigmentation on her face. We think she is beautiful!

Danielle appears to be a very typical little girl, dealing with an unusual skin condition.   The condition appears to interfere with her hair growth as she has some alopecia as well. A dermatologist looked at her pictures and file and believes her condition is just nevus. A plastic surgeon looked at her file and he said the area in and on the side of her mouth could easily be removed and should be removed as to not interfere with her eating.

Her phyical development is normal, as well as her language development. She enjoys talking with people she knows. She likes imaginary play, and playing with baby dolls. She is active, smiling, and likes watching TV.

Janna

Girl, born January 2005

Look at Janna’s long lovely fingers!

Janna has a congential anomaly of the brain.  Both pictures we have of her she is lying down — she desperately needs a family to rescue her.   Once she is transferred, she will likely be left in bed for the rest of her days.

There are many children in this orphanage who could be adopted together.

FACING IMMINENT TRANSFER!

From a family who met her in 2012:
I did not see her moving much but she would arch her back occasionally and make a few noises.  She desperately wanted to move though.  Desperately!  She was the only child I ever saw that was given toys (I would suspect it was because the other kids would likely throw them out of the crib but Janna would keep them in the crib and play with them).  The fact that she would play purposefully with toys speaks volumes about her cognitive ability.  She would dangle the toys over her face and wiggle them around.  She could move all of her limbs but did not seem to have enough strength to sit up on her own (although she almost did it).  I do not know if she can roll herself over but when she did move she seemed to have more trunk and upper body strength then I expected.  She was given one opportunity to sit up and be on her tummy and SHE LOVED IT!  She reached for toys and enjoyed looking at herself in the mirror.

If I had to guess (and again it’s just a guess) I would guess that she has hydrocephalus and seizures.  If that is true, I believe the care takers are hesitant to touch or move her.  They may not understand hydrocephalus and seizures and are afraid to trigger one.

What touched me the most was every time I would rub her head or hands she looked at me like it was the most soothing thing that had ever happened to her – I will never forget that look.   It was as if years of horrible memories were released and she soaked up the gentle attention.

My heart is absolutely broken for her… Janna is 7 years old and is living at the orphanage on borrowed time.  It is believed that she will be transferred to a mental institution in September 2012.  However if a family commits to adopt her the orphanage director may keep her at the orphanage until they come.  I cannot even bring myself to think of her life in a mental institution, she is far too sweet and too gentle to deal with what she would experience.  Please…someone…rescue Janna

Daisy

Girl, born July 2006
PRC
Cerebral Palsy, congenital heart disease

Daisy was already 2 years old at the time of her arrival to the institute. She could neither walk nor speak at the time. She was also very skinny with a large head. Following an initial physical examination, it was found she had a congenital heart disease. She had lackluster complexion and dull eyes. The caretakers thought it was a miracle that she would survive. She has a strong will to live and has a healthy appetite. She eats three meals a day and is not a picky eater.

After a period of care, she slowly gained weight and colored returned to her complexion. Even more encouraging is that she began to speak. She will call the caretaker often, which made the caretakers very happy. She took her first step in May 2009 and surprised everyone when she started walking. Most fortunately is in all this time she has been in our institute, her heart disease has never surfaced. She has been living happily.

Lanie (L)

Girl, born August, 2006
Developmental delays; moderate level of hearing loss
Monitored by cardiologist:  auricular septal defect, but no restrictions.  History of tuberculosis of lymphatic nodes in her babyhood.

Lanie is very quiet, deliberate, she likes to play individual games. She builds towers from the toy-blocks, puts the pyramid from the rings, likes to play with Legos, flips through books, tears to pieces sheets of paper, she takes items from one box and puts into another.  The functional playing dominates in her games.  She is interested in various toys and activities. She explores the surroundings, likes to smell the objects. The focus of attention is not sufficient, she gets quickly distracted.

From 2011 Report:  She is eager to communicate with adults. She does not differentiate between familiar people and strangers. Her language is incomprehensible. She likes to look over and notices the details of the clothes and jewelry  She watches her surroundings and actions of the other people. She says some meaningful words: “bye”, “mummy”, “what’s here”, “I want to poop”. She tries to repeat the words and movements: clapping “katu-katu”, “viru-viru kose” (it is the game played counting the fingers). She understands some of the words, which describe the movements. She can show the clothes, which she wears, and some parts of the body also. She tries to take off and put on her shoes and socks, to button the buttons. She performs simple tasks. She feeds herself and drinks from the cup independently. She draws the lines on the paper and is very interested in these lines. She has started playing story-games: she carries and cradles her dolls, makes the porridge and tea on the sand, offers to drink it and etc.

Shayla

 Girl, born March 2004

Diagnoses: deep mental delay. Cerebral paralysis- double spastic form, microcephaly. Strabismus, divergent squint, and Optic atrophy. First degree anemia.

Sweet little Shayla could tremendously use a family and medical attention to help her thrive. She has already been living in this orphanage for 3 years and risks soon having to be transferred to a place where adoption will be next to impossible.

Her speech is not well developed, she holds toys in her hands for brief periods of time (but she sure does love to hold stuffed animals!), she has a reaction when you say her name but she is not able to communicate back but she smiles. She walks with support- can”t walk independently. Children in this orphanage need families! They do not receive enough interaction/therapy to help them thrive. They are seen as hopeless but we know that is not true!

Alisha

Girl, Born March 24, 2003

Alisha was born with Penn-Sjogren Syndrome.     We do not have any other info indicating why she may be cognitively and physically delayed.  She has cognitive delays, and a divergent squint.

As with all children living in these difficult conditions,  this child’s cognitive development has regressed significantly since he/she was younger.  It is of crucial importance that any family considering the adoption of an older child from the mental institution setting be well prepared for what to expect with regards to how the neglect and lack of adequate medical care and nourishment has affected this child.    These children all have TREMENDOUS potential for improvement, and deserve to have a life outside these four walls.

Update 2012:
Little Miss Alisha’s eyesight has regressed significantly.  She needs a family!
She can’t move by herself but she tries to sit. Her speech is not developed. Mental processes are not formed. Ideation is not developed.  Alisha is friendly and quiet. Her emotional world is poor.  She needs care constantly.

Irina

Irina2012

Girl, Born March 5, 2005

Irina is a beautiful girl with dark hair and big dark eyes.  She has a cleft palate.  She is cognitively delayed, likely as a result of FAS.  She is a precious and happy little girl, and will do great in a family.  She can be *assertive* at times, but responds very well to individual attention and will really thrive as the “baby”.  She is facing the institution soon, and she needs a family quickly!
If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.
Irina has been transferred to the older child internat now.

Noel

Girl, Born October 2004

Oh, Noel!  ;((  Noel was born with hydrocephaly and severe CP.   She has had surgery and has a shunt for her hydrocephalus, but she is still just “existing” for right now.  She is blessed to still be at the baby house….the director can’t bear to send her on.

There is no way to know her potential until she is out of an orphanage and in her own family setting.  She will likely require 24 hour care.   But she deserves a family of her own!

Because of her severe special needs, any family considering a commitment for Noel should be home study approved and have experience caring for a child with these significant needs.

Jessica

Girl, born July 2004
PRC
cerebral palsy

Jessica is currently 8 years old. She is a shy and sensitive little girl. She is also timid.

Jessica was abandoned by her parents in front of our institute in 2005 due to her cerebral palsy. At the time, her complexion was dark and she was skinny. She could neither walk nor talk. In the institute, she is a very good girl who did not cry without reason. We all treasure her. When she interacts with other children, she likes to hold hands with them and touch their faces. Most interestingly, she takes very good care of her toys as they are always the cleanest and complete after she plays with them. For all of this, she is constantly praised by our caretakers.

Because of her cerebral palsy, Jessica has limitations in movement and speech. She received rehabilitation treatment in the institute for a period of time. From July 2011, she received rehabilitation treatment  for half a year. Currently, she can walk slowly when holding onto something. She can also say some simple words. For example, she can say the names of all the children in the institute. Because she is timid, she cannot walk freely for fear of falling. She’s afraid to step forward and would sometimes just sit on the floor. We would tell her encouraging words everyday, for Jessica is a child in need of much encouragement.

Janie (26)

Janie  (26)

Girl, Born March 8, 2006

So glad to have an updated picture of Janie!  She is blessed to still be at the baby house, but she will remain bedridden for the rest of her life is she is transferred.
Janie is a beautiful little girl who struggles with the effects of FAS.    She also has CP and some effects of hydrocephaly.   She is not able to walk on her own, and will need the loving and patient care of a family to help her achieve her potential.

Olive

Girl, born March 2004

More pictures available.

Sweet girl, I love her curly hair!  Olive is listed as having a mild-to-moderate mental delay.  She is small, about the size of a typical 4-year-old.    She has made  good developmental progress being in this orphanage.   Olive does show significant facial features of FAS, although this is not documented in her medical records.

URGENT:   This is a new orphanage for us to work with. These children are older, and will be transferred at the end of summer and it will be extremely hard to adopt them once they are transferred.

If you are considering this child, please do not delay!

Moderate mental delay; congenital heart defect, has had surgery to repair; developmental delays; farsightedness. She is currently receiving speech therapy and physiotherapy.

From 2010 report: Maddie is alert and likes to engage. She is helpful, likes to help with the younger children. Her walking in unsteady and is described as “crooked”. Understands simple orders, but in various activities she does not fully understand what is being asked of her. Maddie is determined to be independent and tries to perform everything herself. She enjoys helping others, likes to clean up when she sees a mess. Her fine motor skills need improvement. She seeks out attention. She likes to observe and then imitate. She is protective of her toys. Speech is significantly delayed at this time. She says few words (thank you, bye, this, no, uncle, mom). She enjoys singly loudly in her own little language.

Isn’t Maddie adorable? She would fit right in as “Mommy’s little helper”

Macayla (L)

Girl, born January, 2007
Has siblings (one adopted, one not currently available for adoption)
Mixed developmental delays; Suspicions of autism.

Macayla was matched with a family, but they decided not to continue the adoption.

Update July 2012:

Eats, undresses, dresses, takes care of the clothes, button and unbutton clothes, uses the WC, washes hands, face and etc. without help.

Macayla is eager to play musical and active games. More communicates with the children of her age then with adults. Takes care of her toys without help. Sometimes she plays alone with her toys she likes. While communicating with children and adults, she is seeking for more independence and initiative. Started to perform self-control ability, follows the rules, emotions are expressed in a proper manner. Likes to draw, but not always it comes out properly. Still the tremor in her hands is observed. Listens to the fairy tales, learns to sing, read poems, to watch the Children‘s programs on TV. Knows the colors and can name them. Likes to read the books, likes to be an observer. Likes to ask and raise questions about things are not clear for her. Is interested in the surrounding world and examines it. Slowly by slowly the girls is learning the social skills as how to recognize her‘s and the other peoples feelings and to name them, the understanding of the differences and acceptance, ability to share, ability to take the responsibility, to help others to solve the problems. She would give a toy to a younger child, would comfort the crying child and takes him/her by hand.

She has no aggression or tantrums. Just sometimes is stubborn. If she takes away a toy from somebody or she wants something already it is possibly to negotiate with Macayla. She no longer is falling on the floor and does not scream. It is very important that she needs to know what rules, behavioral norms and consequences are going to be in place for her behavioral monitoring. This is what provides Macayla with stability.

Macayla is a sensitive and affectionate little girl. She loves to cuddle and give hugs.  She is shy around new people.

Kathleen

Kathleen2-croppedKathleen3Girl, born 2004
Unrepaired cleft palate

Kathleen is described as broadminded and cheerful.

From someone who met Kathleen in 2010: Kathleen is a very loving and social little girl who loves getting attention from adults. Whenever I was in her group, she was always right beside me, participating in whatever I was doing and engaging me in her own favorite activities. Kathleen has kept that silly, playfulness that most institutionalized children seem to lose. She was definitely a little mischievous getting into everything, but was also very quick to follow direction and obviously eager to please. I truly believe she would thrive in a family where she was showered with all the attention she deserves and allowed to simply be the fun-loving, silly little girl God created her to be.

From someone who met Kathleen in 2012: Kathleen is a happy little girl who would love to be able to communicate, but cannot because of an unrepaired cleft palate. She makes noises to communicate to the best of her ability. She is a very sweet little girl, and loves to play outside. Many missionaries who have met her loved her and spoke highly of her!

One of our adoptive families has met her, and has video of her for inquiring families. They said she was begging for attention, desperately needing love.
