Britt and Jaime first heard about the needs for parents of children with Down syndrome two years ago. As they looked through the faces of the children on Reece’s Rainbow, they knew they could never pick one child more worthy than the rest. One short year later, and they realized that you don’t “pick” the child most “worthy,” but you pursue the child you can’t get out of your head. And that’s how they came to find Mac (“Thadius”) on Reece’s Rainbow.
After 7 months of paperwork, their dossier accepted in-country, and preparing to go on their first trip, the unthinkable happened. Mac’s country closed to adoption on January 1. His region closed all out-of-region adoptions 7 weeks later. The family was finally able to accept the wait would not be short. They are not pursuing adoption to grow their family, but to give this one child a chance at the life he deserves. The Vanchuras are still waiting for Mac. The matching Christmas jammies and monogrammed family backpack are still waiting. They will never give up on “Thadius”.
While the adoption ban is something they cannot change, there are still things that can be changed. The paperwork and preparations the Vanchuras have made for Mac can be used to bring another child home. In their mourning this change of plans, a new little girl has touched their hearts and given them hope. When they found out that her first adoptive family lost her due to missing paperwork in-country, Britt and Jaime saw a little girl who needed a family who was ready to get her now.
This little girl is precious Libby. She’s very young, though age or a Reece’s Rainbow angel isn’t something the Vanchuras are worried about now. It’s just who their homestudy is written for. While mama is in love with all the kids and could only see Mac in every one, Papa saw her sweet chubby cheeks and little chubby belly, and was in love. With her.
And then Jaime could see it, too. Not a little girl to fill the space left by Mac, who they cannot hold. A little girl to be loved for who she is. Precious. Beautiful. Chosen. And perfectly made with designer genes.
The Vanchuras are learning how to love in the middle of their pain, following God’s call to be Mama and Papa to sweet Libby. Her big brothers and sisters, Cal, JR, Lumpy, and Hoss, as they are known on the family’s blog, Big Little Days, can’t wait to play ninjas and dress-up and smother her with love.
And someday soon, the Vanchuras hope to be on the “already home” page with all six of their blessings in the same picture, together where they belong.
