Violet likes to listen to music and loves when her caregivers tell her stories. Her favorite toy is her cloth doll. She is a bright, happy 8 year old girl and has been diagnosed with a limb deformity. She has a Hemangioma on her left leg, and also has bending in the left tibia and fibula bones. She was brought into care around 4 months of age. She can peel fruit and pick out the seeds, but she usually eats rice, vegetables, and milk.

Hydrocephalus
Layne is a beautiful little 1 year old girl with mild hydrocephalus. She has not suffered from any serious other diseases. Her mental level, actions and language are the same as other children her age. At 5 months she could roll to both sides while lying on her back on a cushion, kick the cushion with her feet, and could raise up her head by using both hands for support. At 8 months, she could lie on one side while supporting the ground with one hand and use the other to play with toys, and could even sit alone for a while. She also babbled while she played and smiled when called. Now, she can crawl, stand a little while holding onto railings, sit and play with toys, and likes to look at herself in the mirror. She can also make baba sounds and likes to play with her aunt and other children. When she cries or laughs, you can see that her lip slightly leans to the left, and when she eats, her tongue is not very coordinated and tends to droop to the right side. She is an active, happy little girl that loves to laugh and play.

This 10-year-old boy is in good physical and neuropsychological development, despite his congenital bone malformations. He has several innate bone malformations: narrow shoulder girdle; distanced asymmetric mammillas; left arm – forearm aplasia with two finger rudiments; rights arm – hypoplasia of the wrist with syndactyly; legs – his feet are underdeveloped. He is very friendly and enjoys drawing and telling stories.
He is expressive, ambitious, sensitive and has a sense of dignity. At times he might be stubborn. He has a very charming sense of humor.
He keeps on asking everyday if there is finally an adoptive family for him and he looks forward to meeting his Mommy and Daddy.

Nettie was raised by her family after birth. She was placed in an orphanage at 13 months old and transferred to another orphanage for older children when she was 4 years old. Her gross motor skills are well developed. She walks, runs, kicks a ball and plays sports. She can dress and undress herself and put her shoes on and off. She folds her clothes and is learning to make her bed. She washes her hands and brushes her teeth. She feeds herself, but does not yet clean up after herself after meals. She plays appropriately with toys and participates in games with other children. She sometimes have a difficult time understanding the rules of the games. She colors with colored pencils. She understands everything that is said to her and follows simple verbal directions. Her speech is significantly delayed and her inability to communicate with the staff and other children cause great frustration. She is hyperactive and moves quickly between activities. It is difficult for her to learn due to her lack of focus and hyperactive behavior. She is described as impulsive with non-purpose driven behaviors. She has a difficult time “warming up” to strangers and is very attached to familiar staff. A very detailed psychological report is available.
UPDATE 2013:
She has moderate mental delay. Her physical development is normal. She walks stably and takes part in the gymnastics activities. She goes up and down the stairs stably. Good coordination of the legs and the arms.She can dress and undress, put on and off her shoes. She also tidies up her clothes on a chair. She has delayed speech development. She understands the meaning of words and sentences but it is difficult for her to pronounce sounds and words, She can’t yet focus her attention on a given object even for a short time; she doesn’t have the required discipline.

At the age of 4 years, Ty could climb up the ladder, put on his shoes, and think of questions independently. At the age of 5 years, he could tie his shoelaces and count several numbers. At the age of 6-7 years, he does easy house work: sweeping the floor, wiping the tables, washing the dishes, etc. Ty is also interested in listening to stories.
It is reported that Ty is extroverted and restless. He likes playing with other kids, is excited to go to new places and looks around curiously. He is not afraid of strangers, but doesn’t talk with them. In kindergarten, he respects his teachers, gets along with classmates, goes to school on time and finishes homework after school, writes simple words and does easy addition and subtraction. Ty likes all the work staff in the orphanage and loves the group life.

Fallon spent the first 3 years of her life in an orphanage that was known to provide very minimal care to the children. When she was 3 years old, she was transferred to an orphanage for older children. Then, at age 5, she was placed in foster care with an older couple.
Fallon’s report indicates that she has global delays. She walks. She can say a few words that are difficult to understand and communicates her wants/needs using gestures. She follows verbal instructions. She imitates other children and enjoys music and dancing. Her report indicates that she now wears glasses. She has no health concerns.

Kate has had rehabilitation for some time and made great progress. Recently, she can sit, stand by holding the railings on her own, walk slowly for about 20 steps, reacts when someone calls her name, and crawls to you.
She likes to smile and play with other children. She likes toys with sounds and she can play them for a long time by herself and doesn’t feel bored. She also likes to be cuddled; every time she is being cuddled, she will laugh happily, sometimes she will fall asleep quietly slowly.

Kyle was born with a heart condition and anal atresia, but both have been surgically corrected and he is now perfectly healthy. However, he still shows a desire to learn and interact.

Fiori was 8 months old when found abandoned and was able to lift her head gently, was unable to roll over or sit and was not able to communicate with eyesight. She was admitted to the rehabilitation center. She did rehabilitation training everyday in the hospital with massage. Now her health is improved. She can raise her head high, still can not turn over and sit alone, her limb motion is poor, her language is delayed compared to other children of her age, she can make some simple sounds. When you call her name, she can search for the origin. She is introverted, afraid of strangers, cries when strangers hug her; stays still when familiar people hug her. She has good appetite.

TB damage to spine (post surgery) – recovered
Erik is a very handsome little boy who is almost 4 years old. He was found abandoned in front of a hotel near a train station when he was 3 years old. They discovered a bulge on his back, and it was causing him pain. He also had some weakness of his lower legs. Tests showed he had TB, and it had spread to his spine. Treatment began immediately, and they repaired the damaged vertebrae with titanium mesh and plate. The pain was gone, the strength in his legs returned, and he was on his way! Erik will take the TB meds for a full year (finishing this fall), with a re-check every so often.
He is doing great now…he is active, normal intelligence, very verbal very mischievous…and just a wonderful little boy! Erik would do well with siblings of all ages, and with his generous nature, will be a son to be proud of! Please open your heart to this little boy!

Gideon is a very handsome 3 year old boy who has been in care since he was an infant. He has been diagnosed with CP, which seems to affect his lower legs. He is able to stand while holding onto something (as of last August), so walking is a good possibility! Gideon’s development improved greatly when he began receiving rehab from a hospital in March 2011. With his improvement in that period of time, who knows what he will be able to do with one-on-one therapy here in the States?
Gideon’s fine motor skills are good, his gross motor still needs some work, and his speech will need work, too. Gideon does not need any help, however, with his personality! Grace has been diagnosed with Postoperative ASD (CHD). Grace has recovered well after her operation from 2010.
Grace is outgoing, smiles often, and likes playing with other children. She is a beautiful girl and is curious about the outside world. Of all the other boys there, Frank was the one who stole our hearts. He’s little. About the size of a 7 year old. And he’s smart. He is in a groupa with teenage boys ages 16-24. He does puzzles and we believe we saw him reading and writing. They have a very basic school room at his orphanage and he attends. The boys in his groupa are given chores and he does his chores diligently. He was very kind to the younger children. Frank is friendly and engaging. He likes being with the boys, but is happy being alone too. He plays appropriately with toys and is all boy. He’d come with us on walks and talk to us, and then just as quickly, run off to go play. Honestly, we have no idea why Frank is where he is. I think he could very easily function in a family. If someone does not go get him, his future looks very very bleak. Please someone, make Frank your son. He is as awesome as he looks. He’s a curious, busy, dirty, fun, happy, bright little boy who somehow got sent to the wrong place. He desperately needs someone to get him out.

What a looker, Dylan is! Blonde hair and striking blue eyes, and an awesome personality to match. Dylan is blessed to live in a very nice orphanage, and he attends school as well. Diagnosis: developmental delays
Randy was removed from his parents care by child services when he was 4 years old. He has some basic developmental delays that are classified as mild. He is attending school and making progress. He speaks in simple sentences and has developed basic self-help skills such as dressing himself, feeding himself and making his own bed. He is toilet trained with only occasional night time accidents. He’s been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and also has a prescription for glasses. He can walk and go up and down stairs. His movements are uncoordinated at times. His fine motor skills are a little more delayed and it is more difficult for him to perform fine motor tasks. He plays appropriately with toys and interacts appropriately with the other children. He does not have any behavior problems. He enjoys playing with cars and balls and prefers to play by himself instead of in a group of children.

From a family who met him, Oct 2012: Vytas needs someone to love him! He cried when I first held him but once he felt the warmth of a mama he just melted. I am sure he was upset because he and Orion shared a one seater stroller and they were both so crammed, literally on top of each other. Had I not taken him out of the stroller, he would have never gotten out I am sure of it. I am sure that they don’t get to wander about like the other kids. I am not even sure if he can walk. He had sores on his hands and I am sure it is his way to self soothe, to bite or chew on his hands. He just needs love! Beautiful little boy! These children are blessed to be in an excellent orphanage, however this region typically requires 3 trips. This is a great orphanage and the children receive excellent care, and there is minimal travel in-country. This orphanage is close to the Capital city, so it’s fantastic for sight-seeing.

What a stunning, happy little girl! Berkeley has long blonde hair and beautiful brown eyes. She was born with clubbed feet, but is able to walk holding on to a fence or hands or the wall. She is very determined and tries to do everything on her own. Surgery and therapy could change this little girl’s life!
Berkeley does have strabismus (crossed eye), her records indicate hydrocephaly, but she certainly seems to be doing fine and not showing any signs of cognitive difficulty from that. She also has hypoplasia of her right kidney.
From her medical records: The girl had spinal hernia like, the hernia was successfully operated, that is why the girl can walk now. As the result of that hernia the girl has incontinence of urine. Hydrocephaly. She has shunt in the brain which should be there for few more years. She is very kind and loving and has lots of friends. ”

Damion was born premature and had a shunt placed when he was a year old. Testing in 2012 indicated that the shunt is no longer operational and is not needed. Since it was not needed, no repairs to it were done. Damion is also reported to have strabismus and is taking medication for ADHD.
Damion is about to celebrate his 8th birthday. His wish is to have a family of his very own.
Damion currently lives in a family style group home where he is thriving. Recently, an American family went there to visit the child that they are adopting and Damion requested a meeting with them, during which he asked them to please help him to find a family just for him. He even wrote a letter to his future family.
Damion has lived in the group home for over a year. Since being in this setting he’s made tremendous progress. IQ testing indicates that he is in the “average” range of intelligence though he is considered mildly delayed. He has been receiving intensive therapy and instruction to assist him in catching up on the skill areas that were delayed. He walks, runs, rides a bicycle, talks in complete sentences, asks and answers questions, takes care of self-help related tasks independently (washing hands, going to the bathroom, etc). He enjoys writing letters and the director reports that he enjoys spending time in his room working on his handwriting, practicing his numbers, drawing and watching TV. There are 2 adults at the group home that he is particularly bonded to. He spends a great deal of time with these adults and talks often with them about his hopes and dreams for his future. He goes on errands with these adults to go shopping and such. He acts very appropriately in public settings. The director reports that he is now much more able to control the hyper active behaviors that he initially demonstrated when he moved in to the group home. He understands the difference between good/bad and right/wrong and can appropriately explain the consequences for certain actions.

He is very creative, smart, motivated and friendly. He loves to act like a grown up and help the director of his group home with daily tasks. He is the oldest child in his group home, so the director and other staff enjoy taking him on walks and to run errands. He wants a family very badly and asked if we could help him find a family. He did say he loves speaking his native language, but thinks he could learn a new language too. When I asked him what he would want his new family to know, his first response was “I like ice cream.” He quickly followed that up with liking fruit and rice. He wants to be a police officer and a doctor when he grows up. He would make an amazing son to any family. He likes dogs and would love to have one of his own. He had my translator write a letter to his future family “I want to have a family because I love the family. I would like to have a mummy and a daddy who I will love.” Then he signed it to make it official.

An adoptive family met her in May 2011 and reports that she seems to be of healthy weight and she is about 6 inches shorter than the other girls her age. The family says that Naomi seems to have strabismus. They interacted with her out on the playground and she seems to be a happy, playful girl with no apparent physical or behavioral problems. Update Fall 2012:
Margit just turned 11 years old. She has been in a mental institution for over 4 years. She walks, runs, jumps, climbs and has very little difficulty with most gross motor tasks. Her report indicates that she is very “active”. She is a very healthy weight and height for her age. Her fine motor skills are also good. She puts puzzles together, stacks and arranges legos and looks through books. She plays with play dough, glues items onto paper for art projects and paints with water colors. She holds a pencil correctly and can trace some of her letters. She can identify the numbers 1 and 2, some of her body parts, a few animals and other basic objects from her environment. Her self-help skills are also well developed. She is toilet trained, feeds herself and puts away her dishes, picks out her own clothes and folds her clothes and puts them up. She likes to listen to music and watch TV. Her receptive language is very good and she can say a few words. She enjoys playing games and likes to take over the role of the leader. Her attention is easily diverted.
Additional information: Margit has been observed by an experienced adoptive family and members of an adoption team well experienced in observing children with special needs. During the observations, she exhibited very controlling behaviors, some “wild” behaviors, deliberate defiance and other difficult to manage behaviors. She acted very compliant when a particular staff member was present in the room. When that person was not there, her attitude and behavior changed. She will need a family willing to provide a lot of structure, routine and consistency in behavior management.

Sebastian will turn 16 THIS MONTH (April 2013). A family must have paperwork filed for him with USCIS PRIOR to his birthday — so, it must be filed on 4/25/2013.
Sebastian is available for adoption. However, the process *MUST* be started with USCIS (US Immigration) prior to his 16th birthday, for an American family to adopt him.
Sebastian so badly longs for a family and to belong. He is shy, and has a very calm demeanor, slow to think and respond and soft spoken. He is not the ”in your face” kind of young man. He has ran away from the school on several occasions because he is sad living at the school and just does not fit in. With him being shy he is often picked on and accused of things he does not do and becomes a target because he does not fight back. Anything he was asked to do or help with the mission team he did not hesitate to help. When activities came up and he was asked to participate he had no problem engaging and playing. He has a slight stutter that comes out at times but nothing that will enable him or his future to achieve any goals. He is a precious young man. He says at times he has a hard time remembering things . He stated that he believes in God.
He loves to read the encyclopedia and to learn. He loves animals and like to look them up and read about them. He loves all animals and would love to be in a family with any kind of animal. He loves mashed potatoes and chicken and he does not care much for fish soup! He enjoys sports like Futbul (soccer), basketball, running and swimming. He enjoys drawing cars.
Although Sebastian is shy he can be funny and talkative at times. If he had a choice to be in a calm and quiet place, alone or with friends he would rather be with friends and not alone. He would prefer to be one to follow a good leader verse being the one to lead others. If he had some free time he would love to wind down by reading a book. He wants to build houses and that is the one trade he would love to learn. If he had three wishes he said to come to have a family in America, live in America and live near his other friend named Sasha or be able to talk to him. If he could be like anyone in the world he said he likes himself the way God made him. If he could visit anywhere in the world it would be America. He said he has visited a camp in Greece and he liked it there. When he went he thought he was going to be adopted and it did not happen it was just a camp so he was heart broken. He would love to visit an athletic gym in America and look at houses (architecture). He loves to look at church buildings and study how they are built and what they look like and enjoyed seeing them in Greece. He said he does not smoke or drink like many in his school and his favorite color is yellow. His favorite school subjects are Math, drawing and PE and his least favorite is Chemistry. He states he is an average student. When asked if he could visit a family in America would he like to be the oldest or youngest he said he did not care he just wanted to be part of a family. This young man is running out of time and it was so clear he just wants a family. He wrote a letter to a member of the team, asking for her help to find a family and thanking her for being willing to find him one.

Ianto so badly wants to have a forever family! That is on his brain non-stop it is clear as day. He himself has even said he does not fit in at the boarding school and just wants to have the love of a family. He is scared and uncomfortable at the school, basically out of his element and is just trying to fit in enough to do what he has to do to survive and be accepted but with the hopes of a family coming for him. He so badly longs for a family that when our mission team left he was in such emotional tears he could almost not breathe. The fears and loss of hope came tumbling back in his mind as we pulled away. It was written all over his face.
He has great eye contact and is affectionate. He has some speech slurs but not significant. He can speak clearly and gets caught up on a word every now and then especially when nervous. If he could change one thing is would be to not have friends that smoke and drink. Almost all the kids in his specific school do this so it is rare to find a friend that is not, sadly. His favorite foods are dumplings, meat, apples, salads….really everything. The boy likes food! When our team took him out for dinner he wanted to look his very best so he put on his class school suit. It was adorable!
He likes hip-hop music and enjoys sports. When asked what if your parents do not approve of your hip-hop music what would you do, he responded with then I won’t listen to it anymore. Some of his favorite sports are Futbul (soccer), football, basketball, running, running, ping pong , swimming, boxing and volleyball. He enjoys art, knitting, beading, clay art and dancing. If he could describe himself he would say he is a little shy, funny and talkative and I would have to agree. If he had a choice he would like the atmosphere around him to be sometimes quiet and calm and sometimes busy. He can handle both. When asked if he would rather be alone or with friends or a little of both he said he would rather be with family. He would prefer to follow verse a lead. He said he enjoys playing on the computer but more then 20 minutes hurts his eyes so he does not spend much time on one. He would love to become a cook and learn how to make desserts. If he could learn to do something it would be to learn a trade that he could make money at in order to care and help the kids in orphanages. If he had three wishes it would be to have a family, fly to the US and never return to an orphanage. If he could be like anyone in the world he would be like himself. He is happy with how God made him. He has visited Greece at a camp and liked it there but said it was very hot. He would love to come to America and learn English, help his parents and swim. If he could choose a family with siblings he said he would like to be the middle child. If he could not then the oldest is ok. He loves cats and dogs.

Diagnosis: cerebral palsy, mental delay, secondary cardiopathy, was born with partial optic atrophy of both eyes, bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Unable to walk.
We have had several successful adoptions from this institution, and this region often waives the 10 day waiting period. Married couples only, no family size or parent age restrictions. Families should be HS approved (or nearly so) prior to committing for Bobby.
From a missionary who visited with him in September 2012: “Today I was in our local central hospital. Bobby is there now, because he has anemia. At the orphanage he eats just semolina porridge, no wonder that he has problems with his blood. The nurse, who spent 8 days with him, says, that she tried to give him other food too. But firstly he didn’t want to have something other, just his white porrige. She put some rice in his porrigde and he tried to throw it away with the napkin. But in a few days the nurse put other kinds of porridge in his milk and he can eat it, just she needs much time to feed him. She also told me, that he still needs attention and still tries to tear off the catheter from his arm”
From a missionary who visited with him in March 2012: Bobby was simply beautiful! Quieter than the other children who became quite intense trying to get attention, Bobby sat back and watched. His eyes that are most striking…they are like dark brown pools and theyare very knowing. I pulled him into my lap and our eyes connected, there is real potential within his eyes. He smiled, i just wanted to carry him out…this gentle soul with the slow curving smile…happy to be pulled into my lap and rocked and cuddled and spoken to in a language that he couldn’t understand. I loved him…he would be a wonderful son for somebody! He couldn’t walk at all but moved himself around independently on his knees. His face was a yellowish color that was alarming and may possibly hint at other issues. He really needs to find a family soon.

Sue is a charming little 3 year old girl diagnosed with recurrent postoperative sacroiliac joint tuberculosis with abscess. In May of 2012, Sue’s foster parents found a mass on her left hip, and the leaders of our institute arranged her to have resection performed. Soon after, there was another mass found on her left back. After a long hospitalization, her foster family took good care of her and she has now recovered well.
She is active, likes to imitate, and has good language competence. She is a clever, pretty, outgoing girl that always says hello to others. She has not been vaccinated because of her special physical condition. She loves to go shopping and play outside, and her favorite toy is dolls. Sue is very extroverted and loves running and jumping.

Lexi enjoys being in noisy environments and watching older children chasing and playing together. Since she has hearing impairment, she is not able to talk as other children and she always sensed the laughter of other children via eyes. Her happy smile along with the children’s happy playing in the room together make the room as warm as the weather in spring. At 14 months old, the teacher took her to the playroom for fun in the morning everyday. She always happily dashed to the teacher via a baby walker with a smile when seeing her. She liked listening to music and nursery rhymes. She could hum while nodding head along with rhymes. She liked being like a spoiled child and crawling close to the teacher to snuggle with her with a smile. At 15 months old, she has a good friend. They often look at teach other cross the bed and smile, hold hand in hand, play the same toy together. When a caregiver takes her to the playroom, she knows where is it. She often eagerly dashes to the playroom when coming out from the baby room via walking and crawling.

Zeke is such a happy little guy. He loves to sit outside and watch the leaves blow in the wind. His eyes light up each time he is given attention. He loves to be held and even more loves to be tickled. Zeke has the cutest little dimples and a beautiful smile that can melt any ones heart! He is always in a good mood and very rarely cries. Even though his name was given to him recently, he already response to it! Zeke is a picky little guy and often requires special meals made for him as he doesn’t like what the other kids are having. He has only been here with us a short time, but has already touched many people’s lives. He is such a joy to be around and is loved dearly by his nannies, volunteers, and the other children!
Zeke has very little control of his muscles. We are hopeful that with the right therapy he will improve in these areas.

Kamdyn is now 3 years old. She’s been registered for adoption for over 2 years, during which time her development has been followed closely. She continues to make significant developmental progress as her medical needs are addressed and corrected.
Kamdyn has Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome. She is affected by this syndrome in the following ways: She has an additional finger on her right hand; her uterus and right ovary has been removed; Hydronephrosis of the left kidney that has been surgically addressed and astigmatism. She is receiving excellent medical care and remains under the supervision of doctors to ensure that all her needs are addressed as they arise. The surgeon has recommended additional minor surgical procedures, but feels that this could best be done in the US and has recommended that a suitable adoptive family be found for the child in order for her final medical needs to be addressed.
Developmentally, Kamdyn continues to make progress in all areas of her development. She spent the first year of her life confined to a crib while her medical needs were addressed. Since then, she’s made rapid progress. She is walking, goes up/down stairs, climbs on play structures, runs and dances. Her fine motor skills are at age appropriate levels. She grabs with pincer-pliers grip; picks up petite objects, puts them in a bottle with a narrow opening and after that takes them out of it; builds a tower of 7-8 blocks and fits in rings and squares while adapting according to the form. She leafs through the pages of a book with hard covers. Her visual-motor coordination are also on target for her age (hand/eye, hand/hand, hand/eye/mouth). She imitates actions she’s told to copy, points to requested items, gives kisses when asked, finds hidden objects, enjoys “hide and seek” games, and plays appropriately with toys according to their function. She participates in organized activities with the group of children that she lives with. She exhibits leadership skills and appropriate social behaviors when interacting with other children. She stands up for herself and will say “no-no-no” to the other children if they try to “invade her space” or take things from her. She follows verbal directions and responds to her name. She can say several words and phrases. She waves “bye-bye” and blows kisses. She has a good attention span. She feeds herself and is learning to dress herself without assistance. Despite her kidney problems, she is in the process of potty training too.

Dana was given for adoption at 6 months old. There is no background about her biological mother nor the reason for her abandonment. She was a 29 weeks premature baby, from a pregnancy of twins. She had intrauterine growth restriction. She was born with:
• Heart malformation: absence of the left pulmonary vessels
• Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
• Severe Pulmonary hypertension
• Brain Ultrasound: left arachnoid cyst
Dana assists every day to physical, speech-language and occupational therapy, plays adequately with her toys. Speech and language development are delayed.
She follows with her eyes and hears well. Understands simple orders and follows them; repeats words and says many different words, sometimes only the last syllable. She does not make phrases.
Regarding her gross motor activity, muscle strength and tone: she moves all limbs in an asymmetric way due to her right sided motor deficit. She grabs objects with her left hand and helps herself with her right hand. Hemiplegic gait, she drags her right foot and her right upper limb is flexed at her body side. Higher tone on her right body side, slightly retraction of her right foot flexion. Dana is a girl that will need a lot of time in rehabilitation and a right hemiparesis will remain, but only in the time it will be possible to establish her gross motor and cognitive disability.

Maxwell is a clever and happy child. In kindergarten, he is intelligent and fond of study. His speech is as good as other children his age. He likes to color. He can hold the crayons well. He can hold a pencil. I asked, “What are you doing?” He replied, “Making dots. Now I’m doing a circle.” He knows the colors, the shapes, the type of car, the weather and the difference of the ball. He can speak clearly.
He can walk and he can really jump! He cannot walk on tiptoe. “If I walk that way I’ll fall.” He walked into the interview well. He was good at running. He walks with a slight limp. He is self-sufficient in daily skills.

Update Jan 2013: The child has made huge progress in development as you can see from updated pictures. Orphanage doctors say his right side starts to atrophy slowly (his face starts to distort and one leg gets shorter). He was examined by local neurosurgeons and they say it is possible to correct everything but the orphanage has no possibility to provide for his rehabilitation. The child is very much loved by everyone in the orphanage and they beg us to find a family for Gannon because this is his only chance to get medical care that he so much needs. Pearl is a beautiful 10 year old girl who has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy that impacts her legs. Her mobility has improved with practice and she is able to walk 5-10 meters on her own, further with support. She can pick up a bean with chopsticks and use a spoon to feed herself, dress herself and tie her own shoes, wash her hands and face, take a bath, help other children, and help the caretaker clean the table. She loves artistic activities like drawing, painting, and handcrafts. Pearl has not been able to go to school due to her condition, so she will need to catch up academically. Still, she is hardworking. She can count from 1 to 10; can count from 1 to 100 under hints; can finish addition and subtraction within 10; can recognize some common colors like red, yellow, black, purple, blue, etc. Pearl can express herself in sentences of 8-10 words. Myra is a 6-year-old girl who has been diagnosed with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
She can pick up a toy by herself and plays with it. She makes random inarticulate screams and sounds. Sometimes she pronounces sound combinations. She likes communicating with familiar people: the staff at the orphanage and the other child in her room. She cries and sulks when an unfamiliar person enters the room. She laughs aloud when teased. The child can sit in bed independently for a while. She reaches out and takes a hanging toy to play with it. When given a toy from an adult she takes it and manipulates it. She likes listening to a rotating musical toy. She is fed with a bottle.

Wilson stands so proud and serious for his picture — hoping his parents will find him. Wilson is a very good boy who needs a family and will match to any family which loves children and is open to HIV child.
He is smart and well-behaved, kind and patient. He is doing very well with other children. He is open and friendly.
From his medical records we know that he has 4th clinic stage of HIV. He does NOT have any mental retardation but speech and psychological delay (common to all orphans). He has congenital abnormal development of gallbladder which does not bother him but was found due to regular ultrasound diagnostic. He also has protein deficiency so he is a kind of skinny.
He is an orphan, all his close family died. Before the orphanage he lived in his birth family. in his medical record he has residual effects of TB due to his birth family history of TB. He never had active TB but got adequate medical treatment because of his TB contact.

Sadie is a beautiful little girl who has suffered in pain for most of her life due to her medical condition. Her bones are very fragile and she’s suffered many broken bones over the years. She is not receiving the treatment options that would be available to her if she were in a family. She is a very sweet and smart little girl who makes the best of her physical condition. She talks very well and enjoys having conversations with the staff. She goes to the day care center each day and she is described as the “mother hen” because she will remind care givers that they need to change a child’s diaper or feed a child his bottle or that they need to pick up the crying baby. She tries to keep them all in line! She can identify her colors, some animals and shapes. She’s receiving instruction from a special education teacher that comes to an orphanage. In an effort not to cause her physical harm, the staff limits her movements and how much they carry her around. She spends most of her days in a stroller. She can use one of her arms to hold on to items and wave hello. She has recently learned to feed herself and she’s very proud of this accomplishment. She has a very good personality and is very friendly to all of the children and staff at her orphanage.

From someone who met Nash in 2012: Nash is a wonderful little boy. He is always quick to excitedly greet visitors with happy squeals and a formal hello, and is quite insistent visitors take a seat in the chair he brings over to them 
He is very helpful and obedient, and will sometimes bring toys over to the smaller kids in his group who cannot get toys for themselves. He is very talkative, but a lot of what he says is sort of like “Nash”-ese. He has no problem getting his point across, however, if it is important to him that you understand him! He likes to play with just about any toy; balls, legos, cars, light up toys, you name it he will play with it. He enjoys being silly and laughing, and especially thrives with one on one attention. He is generally a happy little guy, but does not like messes or rule breaking, and is not afraid to tell the other children “No” or try to right their wrongs if they are misbehaving. He very much aims to please! I feel Nash would adjust easily to and thrive in a family!

Stellan has Cerebal Palsy. He’s another one who will greatly benefit from being part of a family!
From a family who met him in 2012:
Despite his obvious lack of proper nutrition he was very strong. He stuck his feet out of his crib on the floor and pulled himself to a standing position. He cannot walk but with help he can take some steps. I strongly suspect this is due more to lack of opportunity than actual loss of ability. He is able to sit up and pull up on his crib. He vocalized vowel sounds and made good eye contact. I believe that given a chance and some therapy he would be able to walk and be at least semi-independent.
I really cannot speak to his mental ability because I just did not get to spend enough time with him. There was one special day that visitors came to the orphanage so the staff let him out of his crib. That’s how I got a picture of him in a stroller. It was very hard to get a picture of him because he was very near a toy and he was obsessed with getting to it and playing with it. I could not get his attention as he was fixated on the toy. Who could blame him? I would do the same thing for a toy too if I was never allowed to play with one. So I do not know if his obsessive behavior was again due to the institutionalization or connected to some ‘special need’, I just want to mention it so that a family that considers him has a good picture of him and his behavior so that can prepare to help him. He seemed to just pull and toss toys. Like most institutionalized children he has not learned how to play purposefully with toys. No one has taught him so he does not know any better.
I did notice Stellan licking his hands a lot. When you are in an environment that is void of sensory stimulation you will find ways to get it. His oral sensory seeking can be corrected rather easily with things like chewy vibrating toys, chew sticks, vibrating toothbrushes, crunchy foods, etc. His licking really just speaks to his level of neglect and it is just so sad to me.
The one thing I will always remember about Stellan is that he had a very sweet demeanor. Despite his lot in life he was very happy and very sweet. No child EVER deserves a life sentenced to a mental institution but especially a child like Stellan, who really has the chance to blossom with some opportunity to work on his abilities. I just know in my heart that with some therapy and some love, he could be a completely changed boy. Please…someone…rescue Stellan.

Heath is a sweet little boy who desperately needs a family.
Heath is a twelve year old boy with Down Syndrome. He is tiny in stature. His feet hardly reach the edge of his shared wheelchair. Because of his age, he has already been transferred from the stimulating environment of his baby house to a dull and underfunded mental institute for boys ages 6-18. He is no longer the youngest boy in his group, but he is certainly among the smallest.
Heath is not a recent transfer. He has lived in the stifling boredom of institution life for a long time. He has lost the vivacity of life at the baby houses. In his three years at the institute, he has been given nothing of his own. He has not seen a book or a toy. He has never been gathered into anyone’s loving arms. He is a very lonely little fellow in desperate need of love and comfort.
We have few other details on Heath. He has been seen in a wheelchair, so he may not be able to walk. We don’t know if or how well he talks, or any other details on his medical condition. We do know that he is a cute, chubby-cheeked, dirty and neglected lonely little lost boy who needs a mother more than almost anyone else in the world.

Gianna is such a lovely, active, and well behaved child. Although she has Down syndrome, she has nearly the same level of mental and motor skills developments as her peers. She is very healthy and she has barely gotten sick since 1 year old. She is in a foster family for the past year, and goes to a school program.
She has good friendship with other children. Whenever playing toys, she could share with others or exchange with them to enjoy the happiness of share. When she comes to school in the morning everyday, she dashes to her teacher’s cuddle kissing her face, then she holds hands with other children one by one. Can you believe those eyes? And that impish look on his face? You can tell by looking that this child is fun to be with. Elliot is described as well-behaved, kind, caring, and gentle. When another child from his group was adopted, Elliot became teary and wished the child good luck. He has no delays and lives in a facility that is reported to provide excellent care. From a family who visited with Elliot during a hosting session here in the United States: “ He was happy to play alone, and equally happy to interact and play with us. Little Junie is so sweet! She is very patient with her younger foster sister, teaches her how to play with toys.
Junie has very good gross motor skills. She enjoys playing on the sporting equipment at her local park and also loves to ride her bicycle. Physical activity comes quite easily to her. Her favorite food is watermelon; she eats the same food as her foster family and has been in excellent health.

Diagnosis: delays in all aspects of development
Chad has lived his entire life in an orphanage where he has received very little medical care, therapy,education or intervention to help him to learn and grow. He’s very small for his age and delayed in all aspects of his development. In June 2012, he tested positive for TB and has been taking medication to treat it.

Laura is a sweet girl who is waiting for her forever family. She was legally separated from her typical brother, who was adopted by another family. But she has been seen by American doctors and therapists, and they provided several observations about Laura.
From her medical records: Low spastic paraparesis Y81.1 with dysfunction of statics and walking; delay of mental and speech development F83; convergent squint H 50.1; partial atrophy of optic nerve H 47.2; hydrocephalus G 91.
One pediatrician wrote: Laura is a very attractive child, but has significant delays. I wonder about her eyesight because she was not searching out objects and she was not making good eye contact. I did hear some good babbling so I am less concerned about her hearing. She has obvious gross motor delays, (can’t walk and I ‘m not even sure if she sits alone which is a 6 month skill) fine motor delays ( no manipulation of toys were shown) and speech delays.( At 2 years 7 months she should be speaking in short sentences.) I plotted Laura on the growth charts and she is at the 1st percentil for ht and wt and her hc is at the 85th percentile. With that large a head and a small weak body it makes it difficult to make any gross motor progress.
Another pediatrician wrote: I bet she just has hydrocephalus and CP. I would think it would eventually be fatal if not shunted, but I don’t know b/c I never see HC not treated! I’ll bet if she came here and got surgery, she’d make huge strides. She would never be normal – but I bet big improvement.
An occupational therapist who works with autistic children wrote: She has some self-stimulatory behavior (shaking head back and forth and moving body back and forth) that could be indicative of 1)autism 2) visual defects 3) severe cognitive deficits. She’s making some noises but it didn’t sound much like a babble to me.

Charlotte is such a baby doll! She has brittle bone disease and spent the first 4 years of her life in a crib. She was able to get transferred last September and she is thriving. Mabel is a delightful little girl. Literally little. Though she is almost eight years old, she is about the size of a three year old. She can both walk and run, expresses joy and sadness and greatly enjoys affection. Though non-verbal, she can make sounds and use gestures to make her desires known. Sadly, in the orphanage at this time, she is unable to get any therapy. Imagine her potential and what she could do if she was getting physical, occupational and speech therapy! Mabel truly needs someone to adopt her soon, and help her become all that God has intended for her to be!
From one of our adoptive families who met her in 2012: “She really is a beautiful sweet little girl. She has the most infectious giggle and her eyes can read your soul. She is the size of a 3yo and non verbal, but loves to play and be silly. I spent a lot of time playing with her and fell completely in love.”
MABEL can stand for “Mothers Always Bring Extra Love,” and if ever a child needed extra love, it is this precious girl. She has no one to love on her- so she’s chewing on her hands and sleeves. Her little hands look raw. What a horrible way to have to comfort yourself- to just be a darling baby and no one love on you because you happen to have an extra chromosome. She’s tiny, no bigger than a 3 year old. Her cheeks are raw, from her having her wet hands against them, and the cool air of winter hitting them. Somewhere, this child has a mom that will bring “extra love” for this precious child of God with an “extra chromosome”. Mama? Do you see me?

Brad cannot walk and uses a wheelchair. Brad is a kind and gentle child who makes friends easily. Diagnosis: Down syndrome
Micah has Down syndrome, but is otherwise physically healthy. He had heart surgery in 2011 to correct an AV canal defect. Isn’t he darling!?
His most recent developmental report is from January 2012. At that time, he was “Army crawling” to get around on the floor and able to get around in a walker. He reaches for toys and desired objects and will hold on to them for long periods of time. He plays with toys, transfers them from hand to hand
Feb 2013 update:, shakes them and puts them in his mouth. He maintains eye contact and interacts readily with adults. He understands what is said to him and follows some simple directions such as “give me your hand”. He is starting to babble and say repetitive syllables such as “ba, ba, ba”. He smiles at familiar people, gives hugs and enjoys being cuddled.
Micah recently went for his annual heart check up and received the “all clear” after a year of post surgery monitoring. He’s now off all medications.
Developmentally, he is walking around in the walker and is almost taking steps completely independently. He crawls, gets himself from tummy to a sitting position and can pull to a stand. He babbles (ma-ma, ba-ba, etc) in an attempt to say purposeful words. He plays with toys and seeks out interactions with preferred care givers. He visibly cheers up when preferred staff members enter the room.

Down syndrome
Alex can sit alone and stable. When standing, he can stay like that for a short time with some support. He plays continuously with a toy; he can take a toy himself. He can hold two cubes with both hands simultaneously, but taps them to the side or with his right hand on his chin. Overall the way he manipulates toys is nonspecific.
Alex enjoys contact with an adult, reacts cheerfully. He looks at his reflection in the mirror. He is calm, does not cry a lot. Currently, he does not imitate demonstrated movements. He often pronounces different syllables; does not yet repeat.

Diagnosis: Freeman-Sholden Syndrome (a form of arthrogryposis)
Drake has made significant improvements in the past year. His physical strength has greatly improved. He’s now sitting up independently, pulling up onto his knees in the bed and is working hard to learn to get himself to a complete stand position. When placed against support, he can stand and hold on to something. He can get around independently in a walker and wheelchair. He is working with a physical therapist and learning to crawl. He drinks from a cup independently and eats from a spoon. He plays appropriately with toys and will mimic any action that he’s shown. He still prefers to use his left hand, but he is beginning to manipulate objects with his right hand as well. He enjoys playing board games with other children. He differentiates between familiar adults and strangers. He responds appropriately to praise and to correction. He repeats words that are said to him and is beginning to spontaneously talk. He understands what is said to him and follows verbal directions.
The agency has several photos and videos from January 2013. In the videos, Drake is walking in a gait trainer, standing up at a PT bar, following verbal directions and interacting with staff. Drake is in a very nice orphanage that has many resources. The orphanage’s location allows for easy travel for adoptive parents and also allows for the adoption trips to be shortened.

Diagnosis: Marfan Syndrome
Ian was raised by his birth family until he was 19 months old. He was placed in a baby orphanage at that time. When he was 3 years old, he was transferred to an orphanage for older children, where he still lives.
Ian has Marfan syndrome, which is a hereditary condition passed to him through his birth mother’s side of the family. He has left-convex scoliosis, a prescription for glasses and is slightly anemic. He has no other physical symptoms associated with Marfan syndrome at this time. At 6 years old, he weighs 41 pounds and is 44 inches tall. Psychological testing does not indicate any significant delays or disabilities.
When he entered the orphanage, he had a very sad and depressed personality. After being transferred to the orphanage for older children, he began attending a mainstreamed daycare program in the local village and his mood and personality quickly improved. He is now much more confident and follows the directions of the staff. He enjoys being a helper and will assist the younger children with tasks. He enjoys helping out at the orphanage as well and will help pick up toys and set the table for meal time. He interacts well with other children at the orphanage and at the daycare. He loves to draw and has recently become interested in memorizing poems and songs. He likes to watch cartoons. He knows all his colors and can count to 10. He knows the seasons and the days of the week.

Fredrick is very joyful, radiant and sociable and interacts with children and adults with ease. He is always aiming at a presentable appearance, he dresses and undresses independently. the child is skilful and likes helping the adults with everyday chores; he is playful and joins other children in their games.
Although the child was born with an impaired left arm, this does not interfere with his self-service skills, he can take good care of himself and he is doing even better than many other children in this regard. The experts’ opinion is that this definitely is a child who has potential and would achieve great results provided that he receives more attention and care and the best way for that to happen is to find his adoptive family as soon as possible.

Gillian was given a ball as a gift and when we returned I asked her where her ball was and signed to her in American Sign Language. She responded that it was inside and pointed. She is very active and was playing ball with the boys. When one boy took the ball she let him know that she was playing with it. She can certainly hold her own in a non-aggressive way. She is just lovely and so considerate. She watched us play with our girls from afar and when I called her over to play she was elated. She will do so well with a family and siblings!

Elijah has been diagnosed with Hemophilia.
He is extroverted, outgoing, social, and fond of listening to music and playing pretend. He likes animals and plants as well as new toys and games. Because he has hemophilia, he often has bruises on his skin and bleeds a lot if the skin is broken. Although he must be careful not to hurt himself, he is your typical five year old little boy!
