Hannah just turned 4 years old. She is walking, feeding herself, learning to dress herself, beginning to mimic syllables in an attempt to talk, responds to her name and plays appropriately with toys. She seeks out caregivers appropriately for attention and is bonded to particular adults. She is described as happy and calm. Her delays are all typical of a child being raised in an orphanage. She is clinically healthy.

Diagnosis: Down syndrome
Danny lives in an area in his country that will allow for very short travel.
From the evaluation done the month of his 2nd birthday:
Danny can sit up unassisted. He crawls and can pull to a stand and take steps next to a stable support. He will roll a ball when playing with an adult. He eats soft foods from a spoon. He claps his hands and is beginning to play with toys. He will push the buttons on the toy piano, take objects out of a box and spin a toy disk. His attention span is increasing and he readily interacts with adults and seeks out interactions with the other children in his group. His speech is developing. He is saying a variety of syllables, including “ma-ma”, “da-da” and “ba-ba”. He loves music and reacts positively to it. He shows affection toward specific adults and reacts with appropriate emotions (he gets upset if people speak harshly and he smiles/laughs when interacted with appropriately). He is physically healthy. At 2 years old, he weighed 19 pounds and was 32 inches long.

Rowan is an easy going, able, kind hearted, intelligent little boy who would love to be adopted. He has some notable items on his medical but after a month long visit on a hosting program in the US, he was evaluated and found not to have anything more than a lazy eye that required glasses and a very mild curviture which requires no surgical intervention, as it was so minor it only causes mild aches. Rowans skull plates fused normally, and there is no physcial sign of hydrocephalus. The neurosurgeon did recommend he stay away from full contact sports such as football and rugby just to be cautionary, though he felt he was developing normally and was generally healthy. An opthomologist agreed he responded age appropriate to his exam, and needed a perscription which would help with his mild lazy eyes but saw no other issues. Rowan makes excellent eye contact, gives hugs when appropriate (truly heart warming hugs where you can feel the love) and is shy around strangers. He shows no unusual physchological behaviors and does very well with new experiences. Rowan is an EXCELLENT traveler, rolling his own bag, hopping on and off the escalator with ease and sitting through a flight with music or video. Rowan does very well physically-rides a tricycle, runs backwards and forwards, skips, jumps, climbs all playground equipement, swings (pumps himself), rides a childs 4 wheeler, etc. He does well on mental tasks as well, he matches like items, reads and writes, does up to 48 piece puzzels, colors in the lines and catches onto age level games quickly such as Candyland. He is at a normal height and weight for his age. He really enjoys pop music and can sing rather well. Rowan plays well with all children but is very guarded around boys his age. After time he warmed up to a father figure in the house and was quickly very trusting and helpful to all females in the immediate family. Any family that pursuses this child should know that it will take him a while to trust and play without his guard on around boys near his age. He sometimes hoards his toys or treats around boys, but this is not un-typical as he is growing up in an orphanage and will subside over time. He responds best to gentle but firm redirection, more stern discipline causes pouting as he really feels he is in really big trouble and is not sure you will include him again so families should be kind, fun and easy going. He is truly a wonderful boy that is clearly mis-labeled and is a diamond waiting to be found!! Host family is willing to discuss this child with homestudy approved seriously interested families. Sadie arrived at the institute when she was around 1 year old. In the beginning, she did not have a set sleeping schedule and her actions were uncoordinated. Her two hands would form fists. After 2 months, she could turn from supine to a prone position, produce basic sounds and move her head to follow a sound. On the third month after she arrived at our institute, she could sit when supported under her arm. Her eyes could follow the movement of toys and she could find the source of a noise. She understood when a caretaker calls her name. At 2 years old, she could waik while using the walker and crawl around on the bed. At 3 years old, she could walk while holding onto the wall. At 4 years old, she could walk and go up and downstairs by herself. But because of high tension on her right side, her balance is off when she is walking. When she walks too fast, she is prone to tripping. She is currently attending preschool and likes to play with the other children. She is especially excited by toys that can move or make sounds. She recognizes basic words and can engage in basic conversation with others.

From someone who met him in spring 2012: Jacob is a precious little guy. He is turning 2 in January but is still very much like a baby. I don’t know exactly how limited he is physically or cognitively [because I only interacted with him while he was laying in a stroller] but his muscles didn’t look tight and he had chub on his arms and legs. He seems to understand what is going on around him and would turn his head and smile when you called his name. When given any bit of attention he would just smile and smile. I fell in love with his smile and wanted to pick him up and run. He is currently in a good orphanage but really needs to get into a family and some therapy. He would thrive with some love and attention but will just keep missing milestones if left in the orphanage. He will be transferred at age 4 if not adopted.

In July 2011, he moved to a foster family. He has such an outgoing personality, and is very active — his foster parents always joke that “our Tate never walks” because he always runs from one place to another. One of his favorite things to do is running around in the playground. He has good appetite, so, he likes any kind of food, but, his favorite foods are meat, dumplings and bananas. He loves bicycles, even the toy bicycle. He is smart with learning things, but, not good at practicing. He does learn songs very fast and sing well. He is doing well at kindergarten, and enjoys school.

From a volunteer who spent several months at this orphanage:
Aiden is visually impaired (I’m not sure if he has some vision or if he is 100% blind). Aiden has some more significant delays however it is difficult to tell if he is cognitively delayed for medical reasons or if his delays are simply a result of institutionalization / lack of stimulation. Aiden engages in a lot of self-stimulation such as poking his eyes, tapping his head on the side of his crib, rocking back and forth, etc. When I first met Aiden he was able to walk around the edges of the crib holding on to the sides, but he would not walk independently, even while holding on to someone’s hands. As I worked with him however and he grew to trust me he began to take his first steps and now he loves to walk! Still, at least while I was there, the workers never let him out of his playpen. Aiden does not speak but he responds to his name and I believe he understands simple directions. He is not toilet trained but he is learning to feed himself. Aiden is difficult to engage. He doesn’t initiate interaction but when you play with him/tickle him, etc. he is full of smiles and laughter. I believe that this boy has way more potential than can be seen right now. Whoever Aiden’s family will need to be persistent about getting in his face in order to force him to engage and patient with what may be slow progress but I believe that with the consistent love and stimulation that a family would bring this little guy has all kinds of potential.
From a missionary who spent several months at his orphanage at the end of 2011:
Aiden is a complicated little boy. His years of minimal attention and probably some sensory issues seem to be the biggest of his struggles. He does at times hit his head or bite his hands to self stimulate. He let me hold and comfort him when he hit his head harder than he meant to one time, which was a great sign as far as attachment and trust goes. I like to refer to Aiden as my “mouthy” boy. He loves to chew on hard toys, and he very much enjoyed holding a slinky in his mouth and shaking his head to make it fly back and forth. He does not seem to have any vision at all. He navigates fairly well despite his lack of sight. His favorite thing ever is to be tickled. He has a wonderful smile and laugh. He will need a lot of attention and stimulation to help him to recover from all he has experienced, but I think he would really blossom with the right family!

Troy is considered to have delayed development. In October 2012, he was diagnosed as hearing impaired. He requires a hearing aide for one ear. As of Nov 30, 2012, he still did not have this hearing aide. The director of his orphanage reported that the aide had been ordered and should arrive in December.
Troy walks, runs, climbs stairs & does front handsprings. His gross and fine motor skills are considered well developed. He prefers to play on his own and he enjoys watching children’s movies on TV. He can dress himself, feed himself, puts on his shoes and holds a pen and makes appropriate lines and marks with it. He can work mosaic puzzles. He plays with toys, He can pronounce some syllables but mostly communicates non-verbally by mimicking actions and gesturing. He enjoys music if it is also accompanied by visual images. It is possible that his delays are primarily due to his hearing impairment.

Garnet is 10 years old. She has spent her entire life in a crib. She can move her head and her upper body some. She smiles at people when they talk to her and responds positively to touch.
She eats blended food from a bottle, though she is learning to eat from a spoon.

Kramer has lived his entire life in an orphanage where he has received very little medical care, therapy, interventions or attention. As a result, he’s significantly delayed in all aspects of his development. He is extremely small for his age, weighing just 25 pounds at 8 years old. In June 2012, he was hospitalized for evaluation and orthopedic medical intervention. A tenotomy was performed in the pelvic area to assist in his ability to better use his legs.
Kramer needs a family willing to provide the physical therapy and other medical/developmental care that he needs in order to reach his full potential. He’s never been given the opportunity to learn or do anything other than lie in a crib all day.

Hunter has some residual hearing and he would benefit from a cochlear implant and hearing aids.
Hunter’s motor development is delayed and does not correspondent to the age norms. He can sit independently. He can stand up by himself when holding onto a fixed support. He grabs and holds toys for some time. He does not always respond to sounds. He focuses his attention for a short time. He recognizes faces and objects from his surroundings. He pronounces random and continuous sound combinations. He expresses his emotions by smiling, laughing and crying. He is calm and rarely cries. He does not demonstrate a great interest in his surroundings. He likes lying on his back, kicking with his legs up and making diverse sounds. In working with the child the efforts are invested in stimulating him to build a relationship with a significant person – an adult caregiver.

She is introverted and quiet. She likes to play with adults and likes to listen to people talking and likes being talked to even more. If you get familiar with her and you talk to her, she would ask you many questions. She can walk with hand on support and she can stand for several seconds. Taught by staff, she can say sentences of 3-5 words and she knows the function of daily utilities. If you ask her what her name is, she can tell you. She is cooperative when nannies put on clothes for her. She can take off clothes and unbutton; she can hold the bowl and feed herself and she can drink from a cup. She can read a picture book and can turn page after page. She can play blocks by herself and can make buildings with blocks. She is very polite and when she sees staffs here she would call them dad and mama, or aunty and uncle for younger ones. She sings to the younger children, songs she has learned. She likes most to sing the “Mama hao” (good mother) song. She likes read picture books very much and she likes clothes and dresses in bright colors. She cleans her face and hands every morning. She can keep her clothes neat and clean even after one or two days.
She is a good girl and she learns hard. We all like her and wish her happiness.

Harrison is a sweet little boy who suffers with hearing loss. He is physically able but is somewhat cognitively delayed from his lack of hearing and living in an institutional setting.

Theodore has spent his life in an orphanage where he’s received very little care for his physical, mental or emotional needs. He’s recently been hospitalized several times to address some of his medical needs.
Theodore is 10 years old. He has CP and due to a lack of therapy, he does currently have contractures in some of his joints. Though he is 10 years old, he currently only weighs 36 pounds. His medical reports indicates that he can stand, feed himself with a spoon, makes sounds but isn’t yet talking, understands everything that is said to him, engages adults appropriately (shakes hands) and plays with toys. He’s described as a very happy little boy.

His speech activity is at a stage of producing sound combinations and sometimes syllables.

Miss Masha is a very special and blessed 8 year old girl. Not only does she have Down syndrome and a personality that lights up a room, she won over the hearts of the ABC News journalists who visited with her in May 2011 when filiming their story about Reece’s Rainbow and the needs of orphans with Down syndrome in Eastern Europe. They followed one of our adoptive families on their journey to Mia, but met Masha and so many others hidden away in mental institutions. Masha stood out, made herself known, and said ” I AM HERE MAMA, DO YOU SEE ME?“.

At around 6 years of age, Hylah tragically lost her mother. After she lived this institute for 10 months, by volunteers introduced she was sent to a foreign foster family to be fostered.
Her language expression ability is good, oral language is fluent… she can also use simple English to communicate with foreign people. Her writing and operation ability (level) is poor, but she can understand the concept of space, such as: up and down, forward and backward, in and out. When seeing pictures and photos, she can understand the content of story, but she can not describe the story according its right orders, she has the fine ability of listening and following read, but the ability of retelling is bad, can not tell story after seeing the pictures, she can not focus her attention. She can go role play very well, can imitate by limbs well, can sing, dance, play games and etc. She can draw abstract painting.

Maelie’s mother wanted her, but she was unable to take care of her.
Her speech is delayed; she had difficulties expressing herself and is better with physical responses. She likes to be with people and reacts with affection. She smiles all the time, sleeps well and eats different meals.
Overall, she is reported to be healthy. She was tested for HIV, hepatitis and venereal deases and all were negative. It doesn’t mention if she has been seen by a cardiologist.
A firsthand report from someone who met her in July 2012:
She was so beautiful. Her hair was short and dark. The look in her deep dark eyes was pure innocence. She wasn’t afraid at all. She had a curious look on her face as she looked at us. Then came that smile. Her smile made your heart skip a beat. She was such a happy little girl. I held her and she kept smiling and touching my face. She probably hasn’t seen a lot of tall white guys before. We sat down and I held her towards the ground to see if she could stand on her own. Not only did she stand but she took off running and giggling. The nun had to chase her down! It was hilarious! … I need to find a family for this little girl. She would be such a blessing to a family. There is something different about her. I could see it in her eyes and felt it when I was holding her. He participates in activities with the other children and is bonding to specific staff members.

Rita is doing very well physically and developmentally. She is considered “clinically healthy”. She is now walking independently. She has worked hard on mastering skills despite her physical limitations. She reaches for toys on her own, picks it up, transfers it from one hand to another. She talks very well. She imitates and uses phrases. She asks appropriate questions. She understands everything that is said to her. She is calm. She initiates contacts on her own and interacts with peers, calls them by their name and touches them. She loves to listen to music. She eats from a spoon and is fed by an adult. She doesn’t regulate her physiological needs completely at this point, but she is telling adults when she needs to use the restroom. She is progressing toward independence. Her attention is more stable. She enriches her active vocabulary. With the help from her teacher she succeeds in movements, drawings, in fitting in and operating with buttons of the toys. She can compare and classify objects. She plays with the other girls in her group. She enjoys going on walks with a caregiver and is very observant of her environment.

Rita is VERY close to “aging out” of her current orphanage. Due to her physical disability, she will be sent to an adult institution when she is transferred if a family does not step forward to adopt her.

He came to the orphanage when he was a year and a half old. Jack is receiving additional care through Love Without Boundaries. He has continued to learn more songs and progress in his studies. Now seven years old, Jack has learned about 100 Chinese characters with which he can write complete sentences. He can count from 1 to 100, has learned addition and is starting to learn subtraction. Another activity Jack enjoys is reciting songs and poems by memory. Jack is a very capable boy who not only has good self-care skills but also helps others in getting dressed or using the washroom. Zack is 11 years old. He is wheelchair-bound due to scoliosis and cerebral palsy. He is a bright and engaging boy that until recently was well loved and sheltered at an orphanage for younger children. He was recently transferred to an older child home for children with physical disabilities. He makes friends easily and is developmentally on target aside from typical orphanage delays.
Zack’s best friend of over a decade was adopted to the United States in June and both children are heart-broken to see their lives so far apart now. Zack’s friend Maria is standing firm in her belief that a family will see her best friend and bring him home to their family. Maria’s family has met Zack and is willing to talk to any interested families about him.
Information from Maria’s family:
Zack is a very sweet boy who has been in a great orphanage. He loves music, cars, Legos (I sent some to him in one of the packages I sent my daughter). He is developmentally and academically on track from what I saw and heard. He is small for his age. I think that both of these kids are doing so well because of the care they got. The orphanage kept them longer that they should have before transferring them. So instead of sending them on when they were about to turn 8 they kept them until the end of June when I picked my daughter up. These two kids had been there since birth or soon after. The staff did lots of special things with them. I know they got birthday and Christmas gifts from the staff. The staff we are in contact with have even said they have called Zack at his new orphanage. Both kids were very sad on the day I picked Maria up….it was quite heartbreaking to be honest. They have a very strong relationship and it extended to the staff at the orphanage. The director even called my daughter princess Mimi. There is also a foundation that has done several things for both children regarding surgeries and equipment. I have Skyped with one of the founders who will be going to visit Zack at the beginning of August. He is a very sweet and kind little boy. They made sure he met me on the first trip because they didn’t want him to worry about who Maria would be adopted by. They staff psychologist also did a lot of work with Zack and Maria about what a family is, family roles, seeing friends adopted and being left behind. She is amazing! She was even one of the staff that took Zack to his new orphanage.

Charity is independent, impulsive and assertive. Charity would do great as the youngest child, so she has lots of attention and love from older siblings!
Update from a family who met her in Aug 2012:
Charity is probably the most “typical” child with Down Syndrome that I’ve met. She has a HUGE personality and is VERY affectionate and loving. She is resilient, as she falls down pretty easily since only walking for a short time, but gets right back up, literally dusts herself off and moves on. She LOVES new clothes and can dress herself. The minute she sees a new item of clothing, she starts to strip before you can pull it out of the bag! She has a hard time expressing herself appropriately. She can get agitated easily if things aren’t her way, or if you take something from her. But we believe that is just part of her age and also living in an orphanage all her life….she has nothing to call her own. When she gets excited, she tends to slap in the face, but not out of anger. She can be redirected pretty easily if you have patience and teach her more appropriate ways to express her excitement. She also shows signs of being potty trained as she can “clean herself”. She learns VERY quickly and was able to learn a few English sign language signs in a matter of a few days, with appropriate context. We believe that Charity will do great in a learning environment, home-school and/or outside schooling. She seems to be very bright and needs to be challenged. She will need to be worked with on feeding. As most children her age that live in orphanages, they tend to hoard and gorge themselves, but this can be corrected with feeding therapies and time at home. Charity is a spunky little girl with a very funny disposition. She would make a wonderful daughter and a very fun sibling.

Peyton was placed in an orphanage immediately after birth. He was then placed back with his birth mother when he was 14 months old. His mother returned him to the orphanage when he was 22 months old. He has been in the orphanage since that time. He lives in an orphanage where he received little medical intervention for his needs until just a few months ago. He has been blessed to receive significant medical intervention due to a special medical fund set up to assist children at his orphanage.
In May 2012, after treatment through the medical fund, he was diagnosed with severe malnutrition. He has been placed on a specific feeding regimen to address this issue. He is currently almost 8 years old and weighs just 17 pounds. He has also received lens implants to fix his cataracts. He has spent the majority of his life in a crib. Diagnosis: Hydrocehalus, head size normal. He had surgery on his feet in 2008 and will possibly need another surgery as well as physical and occupational therapy to begin to walk. He can’t get this help in his orphanage and needs a family to come adopt him!
This little guy is 4 years old and is doing very well in the orphanage! He is described as very calm and has a good sense of humor. His little laugh is said to be very contagious. He is described as overall very happy. He plays with other children in the orphanage and is willing to share his toys. His speech is well developed he is able to use all parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective ect.) and speak in simple and complex sentences. He is able to answer questions about fairy tales and stories that are read to him. He also knows some of the words to his favorite books. He also knows the words to some songs.
He is able to play by himself for long periods of time. He plays imaginary games as well as playing with his toys. He knows his colors, shapes and sizes (i.e. big, small). He is right handed and can hold a pencil and a paint brush. He also likes to play with play-dough.
He can not walk independently but he moves with an adult or a walker. He can crawl, he can stand alone at the table and in his crib. He can climb up and down the stairs without the help of adults.

Thad’s disabilities are a result of trauma that he experienced while being abused. He was removed from the abusive environment and placed in an orphanage where he still did not receive the proper level of care for his needs. He’s considered significantly delayed and is extremely small for his age.

He plays with toys, stacks blocks, and likes to play hide and seek. He claps when cheered by adults. He can say a few words and understands everything that is said to him. Diagnosis: delays in all aspects of development, behaviors consistent with severe Autism
Presley is almost 3 years old. We have recent reports from a doctor and a child psychologist not affiliated with the orphanage that includes their opinions based on observations and a review of her medical history. Presley does not walk, talk or have any self-help skills. She does not play with toys and avoids interactions with adults and children. The reports indicate that Presley’s physical growth is significantly delayed, both her height, weight and head circumference. Her weight is comparable to an 8 month old baby. The doctor’s report indicates the following: “The child presents anti-social behavior, lack of adequate human contact, willingness to remain isolated and elements of aggressiveness- Autism”. The psychological report indicates that Presley avoids contact with other people and will withdraw if contact is initiated, avoids eye contact and does not play with toys nor attempt to manipulate them at all (bang them together, etc) when they are given to her. Her responses appear to be only sensory related. She does have self-stimulating behaviors. Her cognitive development is listed at a 5 month old level and her social and communication development at below 3 months old.
Presley was born premature and has spent her entire life in an orphanage that is known to have sub-par care. It is possible that some of her delays are a result of her environment. Interested families should be prepared for the fact that the behaviors noted do indicate more than basic “orphan delays” per the reports. Both the medical and psychologist reports are available for families interested in adopting Presley.

Beau does not make an impression of a child who lives in an orphanage from his birth. Beau is very well developed, already knows how to read by syllables and is able to spell, write and count. The child loves to learn more and will be a promising student in a future. He is kind and friendly with the children and polite with the adults. He can be left alone in a room and will play with puzzles and mosaics for hours. He also likes to draw and is interested in technologies. He is a very accurate boy and likes cleanliness and order. He goes to the bathroom by himself and never forgets to brush his teeth and comb the hair. Beau walks without help but has spastic paraparetic gait.
Beau’s grant of $452 was gifted to Iris, by request of the family who had committed to him. They are patiently waiting and hoping to adopt Beau in the future.

Diagnosis: Apert Syndrome
Serenity is 2 years old. She has Apert syndrome and many of the accompanying physical features: a soft palate, fused fingers and toes and skull malformations. She has no other health conditions. She is small for her age, weighing just 15 pounds. She is fed 6 times a day, but has difficulty gaining weight. She is walking and making progress in all aspects of her development. She plays with toys and scribbles on paper when given crayons. She enjoys interacting with other children. She can take her socks and shoes off independently and tries very hard to put her own bib on without assistance. She waves “hi” and “bye”. She eagerly enters into interactions with adults and seeks out their attention. During interactions with adults, she stares at their hands and puts her hands (which have fused fingers) next to theirs for comparison. She follows verbal directions and is beginning to make word approximations and to mimic sounds.

Diagnosis: head and facial malformations
Anita has malformations on her head and facial areas. She has seen several doctors for this, but none of them will agree to operate on her. She was born prematurely and lags behind in all aspects of her development. She can sit up independently and enjoys sitting in a walker. She is not yet walking on her own. She recognizes familiar adults and pays close attention to everything going on around her. She’ll hold and manipulate toys when they are given to her to play with. She eats from a spoon and then receives additional nutrition from a bottle. She is beginning to make sounds, but does not have meaningful speech at this time. She has formed a bond with one particular staff member.

Isaac is a handsome 6 year old boy. He has great potential and needs a family eager to help him reach it!
Isaac is HIV+, currently on ARV’S, and doing quite well. Isaac is orphaned and is legally free for adoption. Isaac has a number of siblings not available for adoptions as they live with their fathers. Isaac lived with a kind woman until recently when the financial strain became too much. He was then taken to a rescue home.
To review Isaac’s file, one must have a pre-application filled out with the agency. Families have 5 business days to review a file. At the time of commitment, applicants must be interviewed by the agency’s Adoption Coordinator to ensure a good match.

Rylee is a spunky 5 year old who was born with spina bifida and a club foot. She was transferred to a foster home when a family accepted her file for adoption – both the orphanage and the adoption agency wanted her to have the best possible care while she waited for her family to travel. Unfortunately, that family was not able to proceed with the adoption, so Rylee is still waiting.
In the meantime, she has made incredible progress. She’s adjusted to her foster family and they love her dearly. Her foster home is wonderful, but she really needs a family that can provide for her medical needs.

Bella suffered from congenital spina bifida and meningocele on her back, with hydrocephalus, uronephrosis and strephenopodia of both feet. Now she has had surgery for the meningocele and hydrocephalus; when she is older, she will have surgery for uronephrosis. After her coming to the foster home, at the beginning she has bad appetite because of her disease; after surgeries she recovered well and her food intake increased. She always has good physical state after surgeries, as well as good appetite and sound sleep.
Bella is such a sweet natured girl. She rarely cries or shows any signs of discomfort, unless she is hungry and sees someone else with food that she wants – in that case, she will let out a bit of a soft growl or whimper to let you know she’s hungry! Bella loves close contact with people. She especially loves to grab fingers and play with them. Sometimes she will grab your hands and pull you close to her – this is a game that she likes to play. She enjoys close face-to-face conversation and loves to imitate some facial expressions, like opening her mouth wide, or sticking out her tongue. Bella’s favorite thing to do is make kissy faces. She does this often, to anyone who pays attention to her and it’s probably the most adorable thing anyone has ever seen. Bella loves to be held. She will begin smiling and laughing as soon as she is picked up. Bella also makes a lot of babbling noises when she is happy. Although she doesn’t know any words yet, she certainly likes to talk!
Bella has a wheelchair that she sometimes uses. She is still a bit too small and young to move herself around, but she loves to be pushed around in it. It is also giving her the opportunity to develop some new skills. She can pick up small objects in her hands, like a ball, or a crayon. She doesn’t colour yet, but loves to pick up the paper and crumple it. She is also able to pick up small pieces of fruit, like a banana, and put it in her mouth – this might take her a few tries because she seems to like the feel of the banana, and sometimes plays with it first, so she might need a bit of help guiding it to her mouth! Bella is a great eater; she will open her mouth for anything on a spoon. She is a wonderful child with a great personality, that just needs some love and care to help her grow and develop!
Bella is a clever, beauty and lovely little angel. Her caregivers hope she can have her own family soon – a father, mother and more siblings who would love and care for her. Her health and happiness is their greatest hope.

He is very active and capable physically though, and can really benefit from surgery and a loving family.

Everett is just darling…handsome, happy, active, and smart! He was born with a minor VSD (heart condition). Some of his facial features may indicate FAS, but this is not documented and is only a cautionary disclosure so families are prepared. It is just as possible that he does NOT have FAS.
If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition. Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively. This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much. There is no way to know this ahead of time.

Mary Grace is 5 years old and doing well developmentally. She walks independently, goes up and down stairs and can even run. She can feed herself with a spoon with her left hand and drink from a cup. She can put her shoes on and off and undress herself. She still needs some assistance with dressing. She speaks in complete sentences, answers questions appropriately and understands everything that is said to her. She has been attending a mainstreamed daycare 2 days a week in 2012 and is doing very well there. She also works with a resource teacher. She plays with other children, plays appropriately with toys and will assist in cleaning up after play time. She has a 1:1 caregiver that spends time with her and she responds well to this individualized attention.
Medically, she had a seizure when she was 3 years old. She was immediately placed on seizure medication and has not had another seizure episode since. The seizure was primarily on her right side. After the seizure an Arachnoid cyst was found on the left side of her brain. This could account for the seizure episode. Current recommendation is not to treat the cyst and to continue the seizure medication since no further seizures were observed. She has right side hemiparesis (weakness to her right side) and as a result, a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. She is allergic to egg whites. She’s undergone extensive testing and evaluation from a neurologist and her medical information is available for interested families

Gabe was born via cesarean due to hypertension and fetal hypoxia. When he was 4 months old he was diagnosed with a muscle tone disorder, physical therapy was provided. In February 2009 moderate bronchial asthma was diagnosed. He has had bronchitis six times, chicken pox, ear inflammation, tonsillitis, and rhinopharyngitis. He began crawling at 13 months, sat independently at 14 months, he could stand holding on to things at 15 months, and was walking with assistance at 17 months. He had a heart defect of the auricle wall but when reevaluated by a cardiologist in 2010 it was found that it had closed and only an open oval hole remained. Gabe’s physical development corresponds with his age and is described as normal and harmonious. He prefers to play alone. He was evaluated for autism and there was not enough information to confirm the diagnosis.
Update from December 2010: Gabe is walking independently and can climb up stairs holding an adult’s hand. His coordination and balance are insufficient. Interaction with adults depends on his mood, sometimes he cuddles, smiles and wishes for affection and touch. He does however avoid eye contact. He does not interact or play with other children, does not participate in collective activities and shows no interest in them. He likes toys that make noise, play music, moving toys (beads, trundles, whirligigs), and blocks. He frequently puts toys in his mouth and licks things. He enjoys spinning the wheels on the toy cars. During individual activities he does try to imitate elementary actions and will seek out help from an adult if he is struggling, however he gets tired quickly and becomes irritable. His behavior is sporadic and he gets angry quickly when his wishes (to leave group, open closets and doors) are ignored. When he gets angry he falls down, cries, and calms himself down slowly. He shows stereotypical hand movements: he twiddles his fingers, puts them into his mouth, knocks with his fingers on various surfaces, and scratches them. Gabe does not understand what is told to him and does not perform tasks that are asked of him. He reacts to his name episodically. He does not speak, only spontaneous sounds caused by him playing with his lips and tongue, he sometimes laughs loudly. He does not eat by himself, he is spoonfed. He does not take the spoon himself and he does not chew, he sucks on harder food. He drinks from a bottle and holds it himself. His appetite is good, he does not select food, prefers to drink a lot of drinks. He has trouble sleeping and will chew the side of his crib. He sleeps sensitively and wakes up frequently. Has no interest in sitting on the potty.

From someone who works with him: Jeremiah is such a happy go lucky little boy. He is always in a good mood and loves to play. His nannies often brag about how good of a baby he is. They say he eats well, sleeps well, and plays well. They all love him dearly! Jeremiah recently (Aug 2011) learned how to crawl. I didn't think it was possible for Jeremiah to be any happier, but now that he is mobile he appears to be even happier than I have ever seen before! He can pull himself up to stand and loves to bounce. I'm sure it won't be long before Jeremiah is walking and talking! He already babbles nonstop and loves to make noise. He listens and takes the word of his educators. He is happy to talk about school, about games, how he went to the circus and rode the rides at the zoo. He is said to be similar to a “home child.” He asks mature questions, and his voice breaks in tears when he asked a family why they had come for a younger child and not for him? He asked “what do I need to do for a Mom to come? Do you know where she is? Is she looking for me?” He has enough mental strength to maintain his positive outlook on the world. He is getting older, but he is still a defenseless child in need of care and family warmth. As of December 2011 he was in 4th grade. His teacher said that his intelligence is intact and he can learn well. Unfortunately his efforts are only average as he does not have anyone encouraging him to try any harder. With big, dark eyes and a full head of hair, this little girl is easy to love. She was born by caesarean surgery to a woman with gestational diabetes, and was hospitalized for ten days from her birth on January 16, 2010 for respiratory difficulties. Since then, she has struggled to develop in a predictable manner, but doctors are not sure why. All her tests (MRI, heart, vision, hearing, Down syndrome) have been normal. Also a karyotyping showed normal chromosomal patterns. She previously was living with a foster family who described her as a child with a huge smile and happy nature. She was transferred to a care center where she could receive regular therapies for her development delays. She is now reportedly able to walk on her own and seems to be on target for her motor skills. She still has delayed speech development. Since receiving therapy her house mother, whom she goes home with every night, has reported that she no longer avoids eye contact or pushes her body back when held.
She is a happy and smiling child who likes being with others. She is ready for a family who is open to developmental delays, and has access to ongoing medical treatment, including physical therapy. The best family will be one with flexible expectations of her abilities when she is older. He loves music and watches the children shows on TV with great pleasure. He eats independently and learns with ease – he is very perceptive. He puts on and takes off his shoes independently, eats independently and drinks from a glass. He knows the children and serves them from bowls. He is able to scratch within the boundaries of the paper and likes to draw. He is able to pronounce syllables but he is not able to speak and articulate separate words yet, but the staff believes that he can learn to do this. Knowing the other children, when being told “bring Georgi”, he stands up and brings the child. He knows the difference between the clothes and the shoes of the other children, takes and arranges objects and as he is very impressionable he examines them with great interest.. He smiles, hugs the adults and is very communicative.

Landon has had surgical treatment for GI issues and a ventral hernia. He wears glasses 2-3 hours a day. He walks, pushes toys, runs and climbs. He actively participates in games with other children and imitates what he sees the other children do. He turns the pages in a picture book, stacks blocks and places rings on a stick (a stacking toy). He enjoys music class and will mimic the motions along with the other children.Landon is described as "very social". He answers to his name and will come when called and follows simple verbal instructions. He is making sounds and saying syllables but is not yet using words to communicate. Allen has frequent respiratory infections, but after extensive testing, no medical reason was found for the infections. He was born with 6 toes on one foot. He has some developmental delays. However, the orphanage director said that he is overcoming these and appears to be developing at a normal rate. She believes that all Allen needs is family to love him and raise him in a family environment. He does not require any type of specialized care.

It is so painful to see these kids whose mothers drank during their pregnancy (( Artem's mom was clearly not interested in giving him the best chance in life. This was her first pregnancy, he was born at 38 weeks, but she smoked and drank throughout the pregnancy. His mother kept him home until he was nearly a year old, so there is no telling what other damage she may have caused him during that time. Despite his difficult beginnings, he is described as a good natured boy, and will thrive in a loving family. He does have a minor myocardiopathy that should be followed once home, but he is active and doing much better now that he is in the orphanage.

Marcus is a healthy and active little boy. He’s described as communicative, friendly, emotionally warm and compassionate. He walks, runs, and enjoys dancing along to music and children’s songs. He repeats one syllable words. He does not exhibit any aggression toward himself nor toward other people.

His guardian reports that he is an extremely positive child. He gets along well with all the other children and the adults that care for him. The orphanage puts on numerous plays through out the year and he participates in all of them independently. He is a leader in his group. He is living with healthy, typically developing children. She is a sociable and happy girl. The reason for lack of parental care “the act of the lack of education of the child within 6 months”, and no biological father was named on her birth certificate. Anya is a talkative and expressive girl, although she does not pronounce all of the words clearly yet. She is very sincere, and “her whole soul is wide open”. All of her emotions are always visible on her face. She is so proud and excited when she is praised, due to the lack of attention and affection.

Oh Andrew…..Andrew was born with cataracts in both eyes. He is completely blind, and has little opportunity to try to manage his surroundings and learn anything but darkness and loneliness in his current environment. He most likely has other cognitive and physical delays, but what a difference a loving family will make for him!!
Families considering Andrew should be well versed in the effects of institutional life on a child like Andrew, who has had little stimulation of any kind.

From what I saw, Andrew is a very smart little boy who is very much in need of a family to rescue him from orphanage life. There was one nanny who really liked Andrew, and she would actually let him out of his crib to walk around the room (very rare for this to happen in this room). He navigated the room very well, was very stable in walking, and very confident in his abilities. There was one time that Andrew was in the big play crib, and when I walked near the crib, he felt my presence (or perhaps he could see me), and he walked around the edge of the crib until he got to me. I patted him and he smiled from ear to ear. I had to stop touching him because the nannies on duty that day didn’t want me near the children, and when I walked away, he just cried and cried. It broke my heart. He’s a precious little boy in desperate need of rescue.

Health Condition: Benji was born prematurely at 30 weeks gestation. His birth mother is an AIDS carrier and a drug abuser. Tests have shown that Benji does not have HIV/AIDS, even though his birth mother does. He suffered from Staphylococcus aureus infection and Retinal Detachment. He received laser treatment and a follow-up examination showed normal results. Benji was diagnosed with speech developmental delay when he moved to the third foster family. As of August 2007, he began receiving speech therapy and cognitive therapy weekly. After two years, his developmental assessment revealed that he could attend kindergarten and did not need extra training since.

Suzy is an outgoing little girl who enjoys playing games with other children. The other children at her institute like her very much and she is very good at socializing. Suzy was born with ichthyosis, a skin disease that covers her entire body. The orphanage staff treats her ichthyosis with ointment once a day. Her skin itches due to her condition and her caregivers say that it also makes her “afraid” of the sun. In the wintertime, the condition tends to worsen. When we asked how her condition affected her in other ways, the nannies said that in the past her gait has been abnormal, but now it is better although she still can’t run as fast as the other children. She is described as a talkative girl who speaks well and speaks a lot.
She is able to walk with one foot in front of the other, stand on one foot, and she is able to name animals and know what their sounds and behaviors were. The orphanage staff say that they haven’t sent her to school yet because she is too young, but she appears to be on target and able to complete tasks that other 5 year olds can do. She is able to do basic self-care tasks such as toileting, washing her hands, and dressing herself. What she could really use is a family who could give her the love and care that she needs and who would help her get appropriate treatment for her skin condition.

Gemma was raised by her birth mother until she was 2 years old. At that time, she was placed in an orphanage where she received very little medical intervention or care for her development. She’s now almost 5 years old and weighs just 18 pounds. She is delayed in all aspects of her development and spends a majority of her time laying in a crib. Due to problems with her intestines, she often gets bloated after eating and possibly experiences reflux as well.
Update June 2012:
Gemma can sit up unassisted and crawl. She shows interest in things that are happening around her. She responds to her name. She is on a special feeding program to increase her calorie intake so that she can gain weight. She plays in the play room at the orphanage and will pick up toys and hold them. She has formed a bond with the 1:1 caregiver that spends time with her each day.

Noel is 7 years old and has such potential given the support of a family.

Aleigh has strabismus that may need to be surgically corrected. She does not have any official medical diagnosis. However, while her muscle tone is normal, she does have “unstable support” in her legs. She can crawl, pull to a stand and walk while holding a care giver’s hand. We do have a photo of her standing up. She reacts to speech and tactile stimuli. She reacts to her name. She pronounces some words and simple sentences. She seeks out contact from adults, though she rarely tries to interact with other children. She needs support to complete tasks. With support, she can trace lines on paper and string rings. She hums children’s songs. She does not like to be alone.

He speaks, sings songs, loves listening music and plays with toys. With the help of Mom and Dad this child might be the future computer genius. Martin needs family badly, if not adopted; he will be transferred to a mental institution due to his physical disability.

William has constant alternating strabismus (crossed eyes). He has experienced one seizure during his time at the infant care facility. He is being treated with anti-seizure medication but would benefit from testing to properly diagnose these seizures. Wilson's knees hyperextend making it difficult for him to balance, but he has recently learned to walk.

William is doing so well developmentally. I cannot believe how much he has changed in the year that I have known him. None of us knew if he would ever be able to walk, and we are now all amazed at the fact that he is not only doing that, but other developmentally appropriate tasks as well! William is beginning to interact with the other children and adults here. He used to be in his own little world, but now actually notices them and what they are doing. The other day at ball day, I was observing William and was amazed at what I saw. He was watching one of the other children who kept picking up and throwing balls. Each time this child threw a ball; William would laugh in delight and clap his hands. He also likes to cuddle and interact with adults more than he used to. During prayer and singing time, he will walk over to adults, lay his head in their laps, and stay with them through the entire thing. William loves to explore and is always on the go. When the other kids are out playing on the playground, William is normally walking all over the compound. Someone is constantly chasing after him to bring him back. He will often sneak out of the baby house and make his way over to the volunteer house, coming right in as if he were invited! William's motor movements seem to be improving as well. He seems to have better control over his hands. He loves balls and if there is ever one around William is playing with it. He loves to kick them. I could see him playing soccer some day. William still crawls occasionally, normally backwards and with his head on the ground, but not nearly as often as he used to. Now he mainly walks when he wants to go somewhere. The changes he has and is continuing to make are an inspiration to us all. I can only dream about how much he will improve in his skills when he gets appropriate therapy and someone who knows how to work with him every day! He is such a sweet heart and is always so happy and laughs and smiles all the time!

Abel is very tiny for his age and weighs 17.5lbs and is 30 inches tall. He came to us very malnourished and seems to be taking a really long time to catch up in weight and developmental milestones. We do not have access to the right medical care to figure out what is causing his failure to grow and his delayed development. Abel can now crawl and because of a wonderful gift from a visiting medical group, Abel was gifted with AFO’s. They were able to assess his low muscle tone and said that he should wear the AFO’s for 6 hours as day to help his weak ankles. He showed immediate improvement and was able to stand unassisted for a few moments (while holding on for balance). He even took a few short steps!

Calvin is such a sweet talkative little boy. For living in a biolingual environment, we are daily amazed by how well his language skills have improved over the short time he has lived here. He loves to play and is all boy. Some of his favorite activites are pool days, playing on the play ground, and ball day. He loves to get dirty and have fun. Calvin is not scared of the water at all and puts his face right down in it! He radiates with joy as he plays! He has a beautiful little smile and cute dimples! Calvin loves to help people. If you ask him where someone is he will walk you around the baby house until he helps you find them. Calvin has made many improvements in the time we have known him. He still has fits, but they are few and far in between. When he does have them they don't last nearly as long as they used to. A lot of his fits revolve around food. Calvin gets along great with the other kids here. He plays well and loves to include everyone. Calvin loves to go to preschool and can't seem to learn enough! He also loves nanny prayer and singing time. We love watching him clap his hands to the beat of the music and dance up and down the hallway as his nannies sign loudly in Creole! Calvin loves to sing. It's not uncommon to hear him leading the other kids his age in songs. They sing in both English and Creole and will even do the hand motions occasionally! Calvin is so much fun to be around and we just love him dearly! He's incredibly intelligent and always up for an adventure.

Sergey will be transferred to an institute in September 2011. He can be adopted alone or with other children in his group. These children are in a 'psychoneurological baby house' although we are not sure if he will go to a mental institute or a regular older-child orphanage. In the baby house he has access to outdoor play, physical therapy play equipment and a sensory room. He is in a small group of 7 children, so the caregiver to child ratio is good. He receives plenty of food, but minimal fruits and vegetables. The children here do have access to ARV meds and see a specialist doctor twice per year. Sergey has strabismus and HIV and is cognitively normal. He is physically active and developing well. His caregivers describe him as being a kind boy, never aggressive.
