Francis

Boy, born Oct 2004

This young man has a deep mental delay, and cerebral palsy.

Listed: November 11, 2011

From a family who met him in 2011:

Sweet Francis needs a family.  He does not currently sit up, but I think he probably could if he were given an opportunity to be out of his chair and get stronger.  Overall, Francis seems to be physically healthy, aside from his CP.  I suspect his cerebral palsy affects his upper and lower body.  He is very tight.  More concerning is his emotional well being.  Francis does not get much mental stimulation or interaction, outside of his immediate basic needs.  The caregivers are kind and do love him, but are unsure what to do with him.  He gets good basic care.  He is fed and is clean.  He is not left in a crib.  He sits in his orange chair all day long.  I tried to talk to Francis and touch him.  He is very uncomfortable with touch, but he has the sweetest blue eyes and I know that the right family could draw this little boy out of his shell.  Please someone, take a chance on Francis.  He will thrive with the proper care and stimulation.

Lincoln

Boy, born March 2007
PRC
Down Syndrome

Since July 2007 he has been with a foster family. Per report written in 2010: At the age of 36-39 months he can walk alone quite steadily, and when he was walking he can stoop down to pick up the toy on ground and then go on walking. At present he can only call “baba”, but he can express his desire in body language, and if he wanted to drink water he will put his hand beside his mouth and look up. When he wanted to defecate or urinate he will make the sound and show actions familiar to his mother. Since he had learned to walk he had been very interested in outdoor activity, and he went to play games with other children in community every evening. He liked pulling his mother to go to the supermarket near to their home, and when they got there he will point at what he liked. He was very close to his father, and when his father came back home he will go out to welcome him.

At the age of 40-42 months he was very active, liked going out to play, even in cold days. He still did not speak much, besides father and mother he can say other words unclearly with the help of adults. He had to be fed, but he can drink water alone with cup with suction tubes. 43 months-present it has been too cold and he stays in house for most of the time. He likes to watch TV, and if there are children dancing in the program he will learn from them. He likes eating meat and is not choosy to food. He naps for 1-2 hours and has deep sleep. Sometimes he sleeps with adults, and sometimes he sleeps alone on his own bed. If he wants to go to toilet he will crouch and pull his trousers to tell adults sometimes. If adults remind him of going to toilet he will do so but they have to help him take off the trousers. He is very strong and seldom falls ill.

Andrue #16-4

andrue-2016Age: 12 years
Special needs: prematurity; Down syndrome; severe mental delay

Listed: October 9, 2011

NEW PHOTO NOVEMBER 2016!

Andrue was raised by his birth family until he was 9 months old. At that time, he was hospitalized for genetic testing and when the diagnosis of Down syndrome was confirmed, he was left at the hospital. He was then transferred to an orphanage and later on, to an institution for children with mental disabilities, which is his current home.

Update 2016: Andrue makes and maintains eye contact. He laughs aloud and vocalizes. He knows and recognizes his name.  The child understands the meaning of words as part of his everyday life. He understands one-step instructions that are related with everyday activities. He participates in group activities in his class mostly as a spectator. He joins simple games of imitation with his teacher and classmates (such as clapping hands). He becomes very relaxed when he hears a favorite melody of his.

His expressive speech is underdeveloped. He doesn’t yet use language for communication. He expresses his needs and desires through vocalizations.

Andrue initiates interactions with familiar adults by laughing, vocalizations, handing them objects, etc.
He eats independently and uses utensils. If he hurts himself and is in pain, he would look for help. He is relatively independent when using the bathroom, washing, etc. He announces whenever he needs to use the bathroom.

Dylan

Dylan-2015Boy, born March 2003
Down syndrome

Listed:  October 7, 2011

NEW PICS OF DYLAN!   Lots more available, please inquire.

This handsome little guy has eyes that cross, so an opthamologist visit will be in order when he gets home.  He’s looks pretty small for his age!   Doesn’t he look like he needs a Mama to scoop him up & snuggle?

Update June 2013:  Dylan is an energetic, smart, and goofy little boy. Physically, he looks about 5 or 6 years old, but has the attitude of a teenager. He can be extremely aggressive – he shoved other children out of the way when I was holding them to try and get to me and hits other children. I can’t tell you how many times he headbutted me in the face. But he can also be very loving – one of the other missionaries was crying and he just sat in her lap and hugged her until she stopped. Dylan is also very smart. When he wanted to go outside, I told him he had to have shoes on…I didn’t expect him to go bring his shoes to me! He also has an extensive vocabulary and loves his Montessori classes at the orphanage.

Update March 2014:  Dylan has a lot of personality! Dylan would do well in a family with older children, especially teen boys that love to roughhouse and wrestle! He’s quite the clown, and extremely verbal and capable. As someone mentioned before, he is also rather aggressive in getting what he wants, not only because he seems oblivious to personal space, but also because he will not hesitate to grab what he wants and assert his strength over weaker ones. He’s 11, and is strong, stands about the height of a typical 9-10 year old. He also seems to have a mischievous streak and is very impulsive, which can result in him pinching people unprovoked. Although he has a lot of potential, he definitely needs the right environment and very patient and experienced parents in order to thrive.

Josiah was abandoned at a nearby hospital when he was 1. Josiah has cerebral palsy and requires special care and attention. He has limited control over his movement and needs support when sitting. For 3 years, our nannies and staff have cared for Josiah, fed him and bathed him. Ask any person who has cared for Josiah though and they will say that they are the one who was blessed.

When you are with Josiah, it is clear that God’s love resides in Josiah. Josiah can’t talk, but he loves to smile and interact with anyone who will talk to him. Josiah cannot sing like most of us, but each day during nanny prayer and singing Josiah joins in with a big smile. Our deep desire is for Josiah to join his forever family through adoption. Teagan

Teagan update-001Boy, born January 2007

PRC
Down syndrome

Listed: June 17, 2011

Because Teagan has Down syndrome, his physical development, intelligence and mental development developed slowly and was delayed compared to kids of similar age obviously, especially motion and flexibility of his limbs were slightly poorer. In recent years, with the efforts of this institute and foster parents, he can stand by holding onto objects, walk slowly. Now according to his growth foster parents offered him speech rehabilitative and limb training every day.

Teagan is shy, has a ready smile, likes to listen to music very much. When music plays all of his attention is attracted. When being glad he will swing his body following the musical rhythms. He likes to play toys very much, in particular toy cars are his favorite toys. We hope that he who is shy could become more and more active.

UPDATE 2013:
Teagan can sit, can understand simple language. His life is regular, has 3 meals per day, has dinners and goes to bed on time. Every day he tells stories, plays games and has outdoor activity under the guide of the foster parents.

Corban

Corban-001Boy born March, 2009
PRC
Down syndrome

Corban’s physical capacity and mental development are delayed comparatively, due to his Down syndrome. As he grows older he has learned to roll over, crawl, stand by holding onto supports and walk by holding onto rails. Now he can walk forward with one of his hands led, he can distinguish familiar people and strangers. Seeing familiar people he can smile and greet them. He knows to be cooperative when dressed, give the clothes when asked, is a lovely little boy.

Corban is gentle, quiet, has a ready smile. He has Down syndrome, but it does not influence his happy life. He likes to play with toys, listen to music, can wave arms following rhythms which looks very adorable. He is willing to play games with kids, likes toys making sound, will laugh aloud when playing happily. Seeing strangers he will cry noisily because of being unfamiliar with them in the beginning. He can play with you gradually, is integrated into the games you bring to him, is a sensible good child!

Tania

tania-2014tania-babyGirl, born August 2002.

Listed:  May 13, 2011

She is said to be independent and active, and she especially loves to swing.  She is shy with other children, and seeks attention from adults, cuddling up when hugs and affection are available.

From her medical records:  Down syndrome, esotropia, flatfoot, secondary  cardiomyopathy.

From a missionary who visited in August 2014: ” she is full of energy, she’ll keep you on your toes. She eats very well and can feed herself. She can walk, run and jump. She doesn’t talk but she makes sounds. She is very boisterous and on the go, she needs big brothers in her life!

From a missionary who visited with her in March 2012:  One time the care giver made her sit with other children she was so desperate for me all to herself shecried! she really didnt want to share me.   This is seriously one child who wants a Mama!   She seemed so bright, there is so much potential here being wasted.   She whacked the other children to keep them away from me but I could tell she was not an aggressive child.  Tania is fiesty and able and just desperate for love!  I loved her!!!   I wanted to bring her and Katarina home.  Tania is always active and she loves playing with her swing set, unlike the other kids who rather just play with their toys. The child is a bit shy around the children of her age.  However, she is very brave and courageous when dealing with new visitors.  The girl suffers from a lack of motherly care and gentleness, so she is attracted to everyone who is nice and kind to her.   She hides her lonely soul behind the wall of her active and independent lifestyle.   But as soon as she receives a warm hug and a little love, the mischievous girl suddenly becomes docile and calm.

Larger families, older parents welcome. This region does often waive the 10-day waiting period!

From a family who met her, summer 2014:
Tania is such a tiny little cutie! I can’t believe she is still waiting! She was also a good friend of one of our boys. Every time he sees her picture he will call out her name.We saw her with the other kids from her home at a concert at the orphanage. She was watching everything and danced to a few of the songs. She was the size of a petite five year old, but proportionally small, not too skinny. Her hair is just starting to grow out and is so pretty. She waved and smiled at us a couple times while we were there with our sons. When everyone walked back to the homes after the concert, she got mixed in with our group as her caregivers were pushing wheelchairs and going more slowly. When our group pointed back to where her group was, she turned and walked back very agreeably. She had no trouble walking the fifteen minutes in each direction. We didn’t hear her talk, but she did seem to understand what the caregivers were saying.

She would do so well in a family. The home she is in now is more of a family setting with fewer children and more individual attention, but it is not the same as a real family and they can’t stay there forever. It will give her a great head start to transitioning to a family though!

Troy

TroyBoy, born September 2003Troy-001

mild mental delays

Listed: May 6, 2011

Troy has been transferred to the local Internat.  He is listed as having a mild mental delay.  (His eyes look odd here because of the red eye reduction used on the photograph.)  Troy does not speak, but understands speech addressed to him.

From a family who met him in 2012:  The profile says he is non-verbal and that is true, he did not talk at all while I was there.  However he was extremely gentle, kind, and had a very sweet demeanor.  I took bubbles one day and all the kids mobbed me wanting to play, Troy just stood there patiently smiling at me and waiting his turn.  I don’t think I ever saw him without a smile on his face.  He would sit next to me at the table and would stare very sweetly at me and when I would make eye contact he would put his arms out to give me a hug.  I do not know about his cognitive ability because I just did not get to spend enough time with him but he did understand the instructions he was given by his teacher and care taker at the boarding school with no problems, obeying them and following all their instructions (with a smile on his face).  Physically he had no problems.  I do not know if his lack of speech is due to trauma or an actual inability to form words.  I will absolutely never forget how gentle and loving he was, he lives to be hugged and he loved what little one-on-one attention I was able to give him.  He was so patient and kind to the other kids.  A family would be blessed to have this precious boy as their son!

Brody and Auggie

Brody (on the left) born April 2006-FAS

Auggie (on the right) born March 2005
Rough mental delay, partial atrophy of eye nerves, cerebral palsy, Epilepsy-FAS

Listed: May 6, 2011
From someone who met Brody in 2011 and Auggie in 2012:  Brody and Auggie are sweet little boys who appear to have some sort of genetic disorder that causes developmental delays and self-harming behaviors. They are not aggressive towards others, only towards themselves, and these behaviors can be halted temporarily by picking either boy up and spinning him around. Brody is able to walk, and can drink from a cup without help. He is not quite able to feed himself, but is willing to try. Auggie was in a laying room for over a year, but after only 3 months of physical therapy is now sitting independently and working on learning to stand. Both boys have wonderful, heart stealing smiles. Brody appears to be in his own world much of the time, and loves things that crinkle or light up, and things shaped like sticks, as well as hands, gloves, feet and socks. He shows numerous signs of autism, which may or may not be environmental. Auggie loves things that crinkle or light up, slinkies, music, and tv. He is more interactive than Brody, and appears to lift his arms up to indicate he would like to be held. This is the only form of communication I observed from either of the boys. The boys are currently living in separate orphanages. I pray a family will reunite these brothers together in one family, where they can receive all the love and attention they need to meet their full potential!

We hope a family will consider adopting them TOGETHER.

Russ

Boy, born August 2005

Listed: May 6, 2011

Russ’s profile says “goloproentsephaliy” which is unclear, other than there’s some condition with his brain.  It’s unclear if it’s a physical or mental condition.

It has been suggested that his ‘goloproentsephaliy’ may actually be holoprosencephaly like Catherine 9HA, but it would be a milder form than hers i.e. lobar or semi-lobar holoprosencephaly, rather than alobar.

Travis

Travis2Boy, born November 2006

Travis is listed as having congenital defects of the Central Nervous System (CNS).  We don’t have additional information yet on how that affects him overall.

Listed May 2011

From a family who met him in 2012:
When I saw Travis my heart completely broke.  I remembered his picture where he was sitting up, and it was obvious that in the time since that picture was taken his health and any ability he once had had deteriorated.  He laid nearly lifeless, covered with blankets (mind you it is very hot in the room).  I only have the one picture of him  because his position never changed.  He rarely moved and seemed to be asleep all the time.  The only time I ever saw him move he just rocking his head from side to side very slowly as he grinded his teeth…and grinded…and grinded.  My instant feeling was that Travis had given up on life, and it breaks my heart.

Every time I saw him there was vomit on the blanket next to his mouth.  I suspect it is due to improper feeding.  Like Janna, Travis is living at the orphanage on borrowed time.

Please friends, let’s not let Travis give up on life.  I don’t know what his future ability would be in a family but even if it never changed isn’t he deserving of the love of a family?  Please…someone…rescue Travis.

Update March 2014:     He is not doing well. He appeared very drugged. He just rocked his head back and forth and ground his teeth. He occasionally would moan and he was salivating a lot and drooling on himself. He did not respond to me when I approached at all, he just kept rocking his head back and forth…which is why the picture is a little blurry…he never stopped.

Noel

Guardian AngelGirl, Born October 2004

Oh, Noel!   Noel was born with hydrocephaly and severe CP.   She has had surgery and has a shunt for her hydrocephalus, but she is still just “existing” for right now.  She is blessed to still be at the baby house….the director can’t bear to send her on.

Listed: February 21, 2011

There is no way to know her potential until she is out of an orphanage and in her own family setting.  She will likely require 24 hour care.   But she deserves a family of her own!

Because of her severe special needs, any family considering a commitment for Noel should have experience caring for a child with these significant needs.

Immobilized.  Broken.  PLEASE help us by sharing these children and helping them find families.  It doesn’t have to be this way!

Brandon is a sweet little boy who was born with CP.   Brandon is socially and emotionally delayed. Whether his delays are simply from institutionalization or have a congenital basis is unknown. Isabelle #2-2

Isabelle Sept 2013 (1)Girl, Born February 2002
Down syndrome

Listed: September 27, 2010

From her medical records:   The child is in a very good general condition. Elementary thinking processes are observed. She can’t speak but pronounces sounds and combinations of sounds: ba-ba, etc. that are completely random. She knows her name and reacts when called. She carries out elementary orders. She is not oriented for place and time. Her attention is unstable, her memory is mechanic.

In emotional aspect the child is calm, merry and playful. She enjoys the attention that she is paid and actively seeks it. She easily enters into interaction with the children and the adults in the orphanage. She has friends among the children and prefers to play with them. She reacts actively in musical classes – makes rhythmical movements, but almost doesn’t play with toys and prefers to put them in her mouth or toss them.

The child walks independently and carries out the orders of the physical therapist – crouches, stands up. She already eats by herself. She doesn’t signal about her physiological needs and is taken care of entirely by the personnel of the orphanage.

The child is being taught to put her clothes on and take them off on her own. The training for gaining life skills continues.

Single moms and large families welcome, easy travel!

Denis

DenisBOY, born July 2006

From his medical records:  epilepsy, frequent seizures therapeutic resistant, spastic tetraparesis, craniostenosis, gastroesophogeal reflux, congenital endogastritis

More photos available

From an adoptive family in summer 2012:
We saw Denis three different times at large group events at this orphanage, and he is a very cute little boy. He is small for his age, and he was in a wheelchair the times I saw him (that may have been just for transport). But he was alert and following what was going on (a puppet show once, and a musical performance another time) with real interest.  He looked content and in a good mood every time we saw him.

This region typically waives the 10 day waiting period for children with special needs.

Update March 2014:
Denis is a very handsome little guy. He is nonverbal, but makes a high trilling/singing sound or squeals when he is happy or trying to communicate. He looks like he is about the size of a 4 year old, however his abdomen is quite large (barrel shaped) while his arms and legs and hands are very thin and tiny. He is in a wheelchair and does not walk. His little body shakes often, from his head to his toes, which may be seizure activity. He’s very alert and watches what goes on, but does not appear very interested in interacting with people specifically. He is in a room with many other older, more mobile boys, so he may simply feel overwhelmed with the activity and constant movement.

From a missionary who visited with him in August 2010:  “Sean was found abandoned by the riverside at the age of 4 months.  Sean is doing super and is well loved by his nannies!” Update from 2012: After his rehabilitation we feel his physical development is very good, he can clearly call father and mother, can sit alone, stand alone, can walk with holding something. He can not walk alone steadily, can feed himself snacks without help, good appetite, likes playing with other children sitting on the floor, occasionally he will challenge his favorite toys with other children. Alicia

alicia6Girl, Born 2004

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!  ALICIA HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED.

SO THANKFUL FOR A NEW PIC OF ALICIA!!   Miss Alicia is a beautiful little girl who needs a loving family.  Her other two typically developing sisters were adopted by other families already.

Listed: August 7, 2010
Alicia was born to an HIV+ mother, and is HIV+ herself.  She has also has significant delays and challenges associated with her FAS.  (fetal alcohol syndrome).  We are waiting to learn if she has any medical complications, but she is cognitively delayed and does show signs of attention deficit and hyperactivity.    Alicia will do best where she can be the focus of attention and have her Daddy wrapped around her finger 🙂    Alicia has SO much potential, and deserves a family as much as her other sisters do.   I know there is a family out there for this little girl!  She is facing the mental institution soon, but has grown up in a loving and well kept orphanage so far.  A committed family now can prevent her transfer!

From an adoptive family who visited with her in July 2010:  ” Alicia absolutely LOVES one on one attention. she is front and center if you are handing out kisses and hugs. You can see she wants a Mama all her own, and it will be so hard on her to have her sister leave to be adopted, as her other sister was already adopted.   (Their mother is deceased, most likely from AIDS).   She likes to swing.   She loved to lay her head in my lap while we were both on the bench swing and I would stroke her hair. The other kids didnt like to share my attention but Alicia was ok with it.   I could have two in my lap and she didn’t mind, but she didnt like being crowded out when the other child decided they wanted me all to themselves.  She likes sensory input.   She kept rubbing her arm across my husband’s unshaved face and shivering and making the funniest face and then immediately doing it again.  She likes to go down the slide again and again.   She really likes to be in the  middle of whatever is going on, and be included. But often she is excluded, even by attendants.  For Alicia it’s a vicious circle. She is delayed, she gets frustrated, they don’t let her do things the others are doing, she gets more delayed and more frustrated. She is VERY VERY SWEET AND LOVING.  She needs a family that has only a couple kids, not ten. She has HIV.   If you want a little girl to hug and kiss, she will GLADLY take all the hugs and kisses you can hand out. She isn’t afraid of men but isn’t inappropriate either. I saw her with my husband as well as another couple of young men who visit regularly.  Alicia is on the small side, like maybe size 4.  The children are valued and loved at this orphanage.   The grounds are visually stimulating and the kids get outside for a couple hours in the morning as well as afternoon.   They even go swimming in the pool they have there.   Hope someone will come for Alicia very soon!”   Alicia is toilet-trained and able to say when she needs to use the restroom.  She has tremendous potential if someone would take her home and love her!

Isn’t Valerie cute??  She is diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  She also has strabismus (crossed/lazy eyes).    She is diagnosed with developmental delay, and shows many of the facial characteristics of a child with FAS (Fetal Alcohol syndrome).  But she is a darling girl, very active, loving and affectionate!   She is facing the institution soon.  I hope a family is out there waiting just for her!

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.

Jason (1)jason-2016Boy, Born April 10, 2003

Listed: August 4, 2010

NEW PHOTO JUNE 2016

Jason spends his time either in a crib or in a stroller, sitting outside.

He needs a lot of love and attention … He is a good, sweet child, but he has a lot of self-injuring behaviors.  Unfortunately, he is often restrained because he hits himself really hard.

From a  family who visited with him in June 2013:   I saw Jason this morning. I got to take him for a walk in the stroller, play with him, feed him (twice!), and get him ready for his nap. He is wonderful. He loved it when I made my hand crawl up his belly and tickle him under the chin. I was rewarded with loud laughing and a huge smile. He liked to have me rub his feet, and whenever I would stop he would stick his little foot up for more. He makes noises but he does not talk. He can walk if he holds both of your hands, but he prefers to crawl as he can go faster. He is the king of the bouncy seat. He sits in it whenever he can, and he shooed away another child who came too close. 😉 He is about the size of a four year old and is in a 4/5 shirt. He’s heavier than I thought he would be, but I can carry him easily. I’m totally in love.

10 day wait often waived here.  Married couples only, larger families welcome.

Brett #19-1

Boy, Born August 23, 2001

AGING OUT

Diagnosis: Down Syndrome, Severe lagging behind in his development, Alopetio areata

Listed: June 23, 2010

Brett was born premature at home and taken to an open field, where he was abandoned. He was there for 6 hours before being rescued and taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for shock, hypothermia, bug bites all over his body and difficulty breathing. Once released from the hospital, he was placed in an orphanage and later transferred to a mental institution, where he lives today.  From a physical standpoint, he suffered several bouts of bronchitis and other sicknesses as a young child. He does have alopecia (hair loss), but does not have any other health problems at this time. Based on one of the video clips, it appears that Brett is able to pop his hip out of socket, as his can turn his leg at an unnatural angle.   He can walk and move freely around in his environment.

Brett suffers from many delays as a result of spending over 10 years in an institutionalized setting.   He walks, plays with toys, communicates using gestures and interact with adults at will. He is NOT aggressive.   The staff cares for all his basic needs and he is not receiving any academic instruction or any noted therapies at this time.  Several photos and videos of Brett from December 2012 are available.

Marlowe #18-1

Marlowe (1)

Marlowe (2)Boy, Born August 2001

AGING OUT

Down Syndrome, Inborn cardiac malformation – persisting arterial channel, Lung hypertonia, Severe lagging behind in his development.

Listed: June 23, 2010

UPDATE MAY 2015:  Marlowe was born in 2001. At the birth the child was with atresia of the esophagus and tracheoesophageal fistula due to which a surgery was performed on the third day after the birth. There was clinical data for Down Syndrome. Congenital cardiac malformation – persistent arterial canal and pulmonary hypertension. Persistent ductus arteriosus; Eisenmenger Syndrome. Infantile cerebral palsy – spastic quadric paresis, moderately expressed; Hypotrophy; Hypothyroidism; Cryptorchidism; Severe mental delay.

Marlowe walks with the help of an adult and makes several steps on his own. His physical development doesn’t correspond to his age. He doesn’t speak. Marlowe would hold a toy given to him for a short time; he demonstrates interest in the objects and studies them; he makes eye contact and follows an adult if he is appropriately stimulated. Tanner #31-1

Tanner 2014tanner-2017-1Boy, Born July 2001

AGING OUT

Down syndrome, deafness, strabismus

Listed: June 23, 2010

NEW PIC FEBRUARY 2017!  Tanner was transferred to a group home in 2014. He is very small for his age and has delays in all aspects of his development. While he has an official diagnosis of deafness, he does respond to some sounds, so it is thought that he has some degree of hearing loss, but that he is not completely deaf. He does not have any speech, but he does respond to some basic commands and also to hand gestures. It is possible that many of his delays could be compensated for once his hearing issues are addressed.

Tanner attends a school for children with special needs. He doesn’t have problems following the rules in class and at school. He is calm and usually smiling. He is the favorite of the children at school. He is not aggressive and doesn’t get irritated by the other children. His expressive speech is not developed. He carries out simple commands – “stop”, “sit down”, “give me”, and “take”. He knows his place in the classroom – he has a favorite spot in each classroom. He is oriented in the rooms and partially in the school building. He opens and closes the closets. He can lock and unlock the doors of the closets if the key is put in. He tries to put in the key (rarely manages) and is happy if he succeeds. He likes to look at books with pictures. He has a favorite book in each classroom, picks it up and manipulates with it. He observes the other children while they work. He shows interest in pictures of animals. He works with desire in the classes for physical education.

Photos and videos from December 2014 are available through the agency.

Irina

irina2015-3irina-2016Girl, Born March 5, 2005

Listed: prior to 2010

Cleft palate, possible FAS

From a volunteer who visited with her in August 2016:  Irina’s update from last year is still very accurate. Her introvert and shy behaviors got more though. She prefers not to interact at all. It took me half of our trip to get her to trust me enough to walk around the building with us and she would still not look at me. She avoids any eye contact. She did enjoy the attention though. She still loves to sit on someones lap. She has grown even more than last year. This year she had become too heavy for me to carry her.

I think Irina wants to get out of the facility. She was transferred to this facility a couple years ago. Before she lived here, she lived in a ‘normal orphanage’ with a special needs group. When they lost their funding she was transferred here. When we take her for a walk she walks to the gate and she just stares at the world outside of those gates. She realizes there is an entire world out there. One day the nurses saw us at the gate though and they yelled at us for minutes. We were not allowed to take Irina there, she could walk away. The gate is closed and locked and we were there with her, so there was no way she’d walk away, but from that day on Irina was even more closed and she lost most of the initiative while walking. She even lost her interest in the swing. She needs someone she can trust, someone who she’ll know will stay and will love her. She has already been listed for so long! She needs a family!

From a volunteer who visited with her in July 2015:  ” Irina is a beautiful girl with dark hair and big dark eyes. She has a cleft palate. She is a precious and happy little girl. She loves personal attention. She is craving attention and physical touch. If it was up to her she’d be held and hugged all day. She can react really shy to people who talk to her and especially when yelled at, she will become really introvert. She is a really sweet girl. Irina is a physically quite healthy girl. She is well nourished, she can walk, run, swing, etc. Her physical development is good, compared with the other children in the same facility. She seems to have a strong body. She knows how to use a swing properly and can swing by herself. She enjoys it a lot. She can play accurate with toys, like dolls, or pretend play with kitchen tools. She knows how to walk stairs. She can dress and undress herself. She can drink from a cup and eat by herself. She is potty trained and will tell if she has to use the bathroom. She doesn’t talk, most likely because of her cleft palate. She doesn’t make noises, but her eyes express a lot about how she feels. And her smile will tell you when she enjoys something. She understands what is being said to her and she can follow orders. When Irina is in the group, she’ll try to stay away from the others. She prefers to play by herself, but she is also capable of interacting with other children or adults. She prefers to play with children who are smaller or younger than her, probably because they are no threat to her. Last year I saw how she was being bullied by other (bigger) children. She tries to flee from bullies (and from yelling), but there is nowhere to go. This year she is doing much better. She has grown physically, which made her less of a target for the bigger children. Maybe also because new smaller children are in the group now. Sometimes she’s still the target of bullying and harming behaviour, but at other moments she will show these behaviours herself. She can be a bully to the smaller children herself. I think this is her way of showing that she is stronger now, but this is no good development. The longer children are in this facility, the more harming behaviour they show. Irina is still able to receive love, but time is ticking away. She needs a family. She would thrive in a family where she could be ‘the baby’.”

Irina has been transferred to the older child internat now.   Elinor, Devora, Julia,  Sullivan, Artemur, Duane, Abner and Irina may all be in the same region.
