Mild to moderate delays, Cerebral Palsy

Listed: October 29, 2012

Update June 2013:
Frieda is also very sweet but is delayed. She is shy when you meet her but she loves lollipops and will smile for one 🙂  There is video also available with her in it, for interested families. She knew the words to the lyrics to the songs they performed and also tried to dance along to the music. She does like to rock a little bit when she sits more than likely to self-soothe.

Another lovely young lady, still waiting for her forever family.

Update June 2013:
This picture does not show off her true beauty! She loved wearing this dress as when she danced the beads went flying. She has some pretty good dancing moves! I am not sure if she knew the words to the song but her mouth moved the entire time. She also rocks when she sits and does present as delayed.  She has a very sweet, shy smile.

Shia

Shia (2) Shia (1)Boy, born February 2007
PRC
Mild cerebral palsy

Listed: Jan 2015

Shia is being hosted in the US this winter (2015)!

Shia is a little introverted, but he is friendly and willing to connect with others after a while. His health and intellectual developments are average. However, his motor abilities are somewhat behind those of other children. When he moves about, the left side of his body is a little limited due to his minor cerebral palsy.

Shia now attends school. He gets along with the children in his class. He likes to play with children the same age and he likes a variety of toys. He is currently in special education in his foster family. A particular note from the head of the foster family: Shia is afraid of small animals. We hope Shia finds a forever family soon!

Updated: Jan 2, 2015:  Shia is a happy, sweet, affectionate, and playful boy who is easy to get along with. He is a bit shy, but he is beginning to open up more. He enjoys reading, drawing, playing with his host sisters, chasing them with a squirt gun, and playing video games. He is becoming more talkative and more outgoing. He loves to be tickled and enjoys laughing with his host sisters. He is very calm; he has not had any tantrums and has not yelled or screamed at all. He is a bit fearful of animals, but is starting to pet the host family’s dog. He is a great eater and is not picky at all; he likes pizza, fruit, vegetables, rice, meat, and pasta; he actually does not like using chopsticks. The host family is trying to teach him that he can use his weaker hand.

Limb differences-hands and feet deformity

Listed: Nov 2014

6.5 year old Warner is diagnosed with deformity of hands and feet. He has one toe on each foot and one finger on each hand, but he does not let that stop him from doing anything…he’s one amazing and resilient kid!

Warner’s file is outdated, so his current agency is trying to get an update. From his Oct. 2011 file: Warner has good common sense and can sing songs he sees on TV. He takes his quilt and goes to bed when the caretaker tells him to. He can play and eat with his hand holding the toy or bottle just like any other child, even if the toy is small. His intelligence and language development are normal. Warner likes imitating the grown-ups’ behaviors and he is curious about everything. Warner is described as a lovely character and as optimistic. He is an intelligent child who has great ability to learn new things and he is happy to play with others. His favorite thing to do was play in the ball pit. Look at all the things Warner can do! He is not going to let anything get in his way or stop him. Will you be the lucky family who makes Warner your son?

Halden

Halden (2) Halden (1)Boy, born December 2007
PRC
Congenital meningocele

Halden really loves car toys that make sounds. Every time he picks out a toy, he will first take a big car, run wildly all around the room, and laugh happily! He is able to speak a lot and his ability to take care of himself is very strong. Before he goes to bed, he will take his clothes and neatly fold them in a pile. He will share his toys and food with other children. He is very sensible. When other children feel wronged, he will take the initiative to run to the other children, comfort them and say: “No problem, don’t be afraid!”

In his early education classes, he has completed many craft projects. He can paste simple pictures and color in animal coloring books. After class, he will tidy up his own learning materials. He is also very intelligent and can recite “student rules, three character words” etc., as well as children’s songs.

Nelton

Nelton (2)

Nelton (1)Boy, born August 2007
PRC
Brain damage

Listed: Nov 2014

Nelton underwent a comprehensive assessment and joined a special education program inside the institute. We have a specialized teacher that plans specific content for him to learn every day. Since he began the special education class, Nelton has greatly improved. He is very interested in learning mathematics, art, and music. Everything that he studies, he is able to really know. Now, Nelton has learned how to count from 1 – 20 and he can write Arabic numerals from 1 – 10. He has even learned how to sing children’s songs, dance, and draw. His passion is drawing. One time when he went to class with good behavior, the teacher rewarded him with a watercolor brush. After he returned to his room, he first showed it off to everyone, and then he started to paint on the wall a house, sun, clouds, grass, kittens…After a while, when he was finished with his “great composition,” even though he drew on the wall, we had no choice but to say Nelton’s painting is truly very good, and therefore the nannies still praise him. He is the “Little Artist” of the Children’s Department, but he never brags about it. He usually takes the initiative to teach the other children.

Nelton’s comprehension abilities, language organization abilities, and expression abilities are all very good. He is capable of understanding adults, and is even able to fluidly express his own opinions, and at times, he runs into differing opinions with the nannies. He will “argue strongly on just grounds” and he can even persuade the nannies. He also understands politeness. When he sees someone he will take the initiative to greet them, and when he sees someone off, he will say “good-bye.”

NEW PIC OF FRANNIE!

Listed: October 24, 2014

From reading 6.5 year old Frannie’s file, it is clear that this girl will do very well in a forever family! And speaking of files, hers is full of information! Frannie likes to play with other children. She also likes to play with dolls, games, and do puzzles. Her favorite foods are apples and eggs and she like to drink milk. She also loves snacks.

At the age of 6, Frannie began going to a special school. She quickly became a favorite. Frannie quickly learned to follow the teachers and learned some sign language. She is learning more gestures, such as one for her name, the numbers 1-10, and a sign for toilet. She has learned to write many numbers and some words. She is an active student in school and she enjoys games and crafts. Frannie won two awards at school- one for “good child prize”, and one for “small pacesetter who helps others prize.” The awards made her very happy and proud. Her overall performance is excellent! Even when she loses a game, she will smile. Frannie needs some help when it comes to fine motor skills, but she is fond of learning and can imitate quite well. She seems to be very interested in gymnastics and can do many tricks. She is flexible and has talent in dancing. Frannie is enthusiastic, outgoing, and fond of learning. All the caretakers in the orphanage love her very much! It is clear that with the love of a forever family and some guidance, this child will make huge gains and will soar!

Tobias

Tobias (2)Boy, born August 2007
PRC
Delayed mental development

Listed: Sept 2014

Sweet Tobias was found abandoned at the approximate age of six. SIX..can you even imagine? Tobias has only been in the care of this orphanage for about a year and he recently turned seven years old. At the time he came into care, he was not communicating with anyone, was not potty trained, and had trouble dressing and undressing himself. Most likely a part of that had to do with his profound sadness of losing his family at that age. With the help of his caretakers, now he can look at books, use a spoon to eat independently, can tell the teacher when he needs to go to the bathroom, and he can cooperate with people when they help him get dressed. He sometimes likes to play with other children and he is currently receiving language rehabilitation. Tobias was sent to live in a foster family but attends the school in the orphanage during the daytime hours, where he plays games with the other children and the teacher.Tobias is introverted, but has a ready smile. He does not like to communicate with people. He can complete some simple instructions given by the teacher. He has no facial expression or reaction to strangers. A potential family should be open to speech and language delays. It’s hard to know how much of his needs are true needs versus issues from being abandoned at six at this point. What this child needs most is a family who is open to some unknowns and one who will love him unconditionally for who he is and what he can do!

Kristopher

2015

2015

Boy, Born May 2007

HIV+, FAS,  heart defect, vision issues (blind in one eye), moderate mental delay

Relisted: Feb 28, 2014

Kristopher finally available again!!  Kristopher is a handsome young man with blonde hair and brown eyes.   He is very active and is said to be always happy, but he is quite delayed.  Kristopher has significant vision issues, which may or may not be correctable.  He shows many facial and medical features of FAS.

***He can be adopted with Jessica and/or Emerson if a family is interested and approved in their home study ***

From a family who met him in early 2014:  Kristopher is such a sweet boy, and I think he would have so much potential in a loving home! He is very small for his age; he was 6, but looked like about 4 years old. He was definitely more mentally delayed than the other boys in his group, but he could answer questions appropriately, followed directions, could eat by himself and get dressed to go outside with little help. One time we played a game like ring-around-the-rosy, and he knew the words to the song and how to play along. He loved when my husband lifted him up high in the air. His eyesight is poor, and they said he is blind in one eye. He had trouble doing a puzzle, but we weren’t sure if it was a cognitive issue, or because he couldn’t see the pieces well. They told us he has some sort of heart condition, which might require surgery. We did see him showing rocking behavior at times. He got along well with the other kids, although he often played by himself, probably because of cognitive differences. He is so precious and really needs a family!

From a family who met him in October 2012:  Kristopher is a super-sweet boy who is 5 but looks 2 and is happy ALL the time.  He needs to live near a large medical facility, have heart surgery (unless it’s too late), and probably needs a small family that can commit to pretty full care for him. He is darling!

From a family who met him in spring 2014:   Kristopher is such a sweet boy, and I think he would have so much potential in a loving home!

From an adoption advocate who met him summer 2013:
I met this 6 year old boy with CHD. This little guy had so much energy and was ALL BOY running around and playing and showing off for us. I was alone in a stairwell with him and nearly fainted when he jumped from the halfway point on a flight of stairs to beat me to the bottom! I tried to scold him but he gave me one of those smiles that led me to believe he was gonna do it again on the next flight…yep… This little guy is so full of life and just adorable!!! I imagine he keeps his foster mother on her toes! He was very curious about us and followed us all over the orphanage building.

He has a lot of energy, but he listens well to the nannies. They often reminded him to behave in passing – though it was more of a reminder that they were watching than because he was acting up. He interacts well with other children though he did not engage me (adult) very much. He is delayed, but has potential in a family. Super cute. He needs a family, there is so much hope and potential for him that he will not get in an orphanage. He would do well with older children to set an example.

After arrival the boy had attachment difficulty to the other children, had hard time while sleeping, was angry and upset, would not play with other children, his language was not clear, would cry without reason, would not eat and only chew the food, had difficulty walking.

Now Jovan’s language is clear, he has learned to dress himself, and washes himself without help.  His walking skill improved very much, his walk is good, runs, walks up and down the stairway, but due to the delayed development he sometimes makes movements with his hands and it seems that it is hard to control this.

Jovan is very good boy, likes to be closed to a person, communicates with social worker, is sensitive. He has good memory, likes to tell stories and is very happy when the care giver is listening to him and asks questions as he likes to answer the questions. Is able to learn a short poem by heart, likes to play and participate at the musical activities. Has a very good sense for rhythm, dances. Likes to work with puzzles, and coloring books. Can name animals, colors, knows letters and numbers, is very noticeable and polite. But sometimes is upset and stubborn, it is observed if communication with him is gentle his stubbornness disappears and he becomes of a very good mood.

CP dystonic-dyskinetic type, rough delay of static and locomotor activity, mental delay, umbilical hernia, congenital cataract, crossed eyes

URGENT!  CHANTELLE IS FACING TRANSFER

Sweet Chantelle has a list of diagnoses, but her main need is a loving family!   A family could help her reach her potential and save her from a life in a crib.

From a family who met her in fall 2013:
Chantelle is mostly kept in a laying room although I did seen her out in the main groupa room laying down in a gated play area. I believe she can roll around. I saw her holding things in her hands as well. She has a calm, sweet spirit and I had her smiling in the first minute of seeing her. I touched her precious little face and told her I loved her and she smiled. The other kids seem to love her and they liked going into the laying room to take pictures of her with me.  Chantelle so needs a family now! She won’t be kept at the baby house much longer. She is soooo beautiful, the pictures really don’t do her justice.

Mental developmental delay, postoperative left oblique inguinal hernia

Levi is active, social, fond of listening to music and he can get along well with other children. He enjoys musical or movable toys, playing balls, clapping hands and swaying his hips along with music. He is curious about new things and delicious food makes him happy. Levi has attached stable and close relationships with the caregivers. Levi is attending the center’s preschool and loves participating in the class games. He has some difficulties paying attention, but he will listen to someone close to him or someone he knows well. He is very polite and greets everyone he meets. This sweet boy is waiting for a family who will provide him with structure, love and the opportunity to continue his progress.

A $5,000 agency grant is available, and his orphanage donation has been reduced and could possibly be waived completely.

Nash

Nash 2015Boy, born 2004

Hydrocephalus

Listed: August 20, 2013

July 2016: NASH HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE INSTITUTION :(

From a volunteer who visited with him in July 2014:  ” Nash is still this very small boy. He has the size of a pre schooler. He is really cute though. He loves to have a man around. He showed my boyfriend all around the place. He loves to blow little wind mills and play games together. He doesn’t really speak the language they speak in his country, but he does make all kinds of ‘words’. He actually tries to make you understand and every now and then there will be an actual word in it, which makes it easier to understand what he says. He is potty trained and he understands language and knows quite well how to read the body language of the nurses. He’s a big help for the nurses, he carries toys inside and pushes wheelchairs. We suspect that he has some kind of visual impairment. He had the glasses of my boyfriend on for a moment and he seemed to be able to see much more, but I’m no eye doctor, so I can’t say for sure. All I can say is that this boy desperately needs out. He is quite healthy and he needs a family where he can blossom. He is an amazing boy and I have tons of pictures and a couple videos of him, where he shows his own goofy self. So please don’t let this boy wait any longer. Many of his friends from the orphanage have been adopted, but he is still listed. I want him out there! I want someone to see his potential and love him all the way home!

From a family who met him in Dec 2013: He seemed to be rocking more persistently. I noticed when music was being played or when we would actively engage him play he would rock nervously. However, he is a wonderfully sweet spirited child and is eager to please. He would always great us with a formal, “hello” and then lead us to take a seat. He never missed an opprotunity to rush out of the groupa and jump in our laps or include himself in whatever game we were playing with our boys. He so desperately wants to be loved. He called me, “Mama” and it broke my heart…how I wish I could have taken this precious boy as well. There were many days that we noticed him strapped to a chair or straight jacketed; I am not sure why because I never saw any self injurious behavior from him. He is very impulsive and easily excited but his joy simply radiates a room. He desperately deserves to be loved, valued and wanted….he only aims to please. The first thought that came to mind upon meeting him was, “He does NOT belong here”….he is so smart…though his speech is often slurred; but only slightly. He seems to be minorly effected by his hydrocephaly and gets along very well. His poor little hands do shake though; probably as a result of the pressure on his brain. I am unsure if he has been shunted or not; I felt around his head one day and did not feel the bump that would indicate he has. If he has not been shunted then that makes his case even more urgent. He desperately needs out! This boy has ALL the potential in the world…he just needs the right parents to break him free!  I also have a video with him in it, if a family is interested.

From someone who met Nash in 2012:  Nash is a wonderful little boy. He is always quick to excitedly greet visitors with happy squeals and a formal hello, and is quite insistent visitors take a seat in the chair he brings over to them 🙂  He is very helpful and obedient, and will sometimes bring toys over to the smaller kids in his group who cannot get toys for themselves. He is very talkative, but a lot of what he says is sort of like “Nash”-ese. He has no problem getting his point across, however, if it is important to him that you understand him! He likes to play with just about any toy; balls, legos, cars, light up toys, you name it he will play with it. He enjoys being silly and laughing, and especially thrives with one on one attention. He is generally a happy little guy, but does not like messes or rule breaking, and is not afraid to tell the other children “No” or try to right their wrongs if they are misbehaving. He very much aims to please! I feel Nash would adjust easily to and thrive in a family!

From a missionary who visited in August 2014:  ” this tiny little lady is always on the go and is a total thrill seeker. She likes being spun around and tipped upside down. She has the cutest little giggle! She likes taking turns sitting on everyone’s knee.  “

From someone who met her:  I loved this child but she seemed so lost…she had only just arrived at the institution when I visited and she was bewildered! She is TINY. She is the child we all talk about, the child plucked from the baby house at 5 and left in a cot! She is the child forgotten and alone!miriam-2016-1

I was told she could walk, in fact she is the only child in the bedridden building who can walk, and then without warning she was swooped from her cot and paraded in front of me. A recent update says she is still moving and can still walk and she cries if she doesn’t get her walk! And she is still laughing and playing; but for how much longer?

She needs OUT! She needs a Mama, NOW!  10 day wait often waived here. Married couples only, larger families welcome.

From an adoptive family who met him:  I met Garrett in May 2012 and I will always remember how sweet he was.  He was usually the first one to greet me with a hug when I visited.  He was always so excited to show off for me.  When the care-taker announced that they were all going outside he promptly put his shoes on and helped some of the other kids with their shoes as well.  He and the other boys in his group (Troy and Sammy) are very well loved by one of their care-takers and it shows.  It is obvious that they have been taught manners and cooperation and they are very kind to one another.  They are taught at least several days a week so do not let the diagnosis deceive you, they are fairly smart boys.  They all have obvious delays but never had any problems following instructions and they understood everything they were told and all seemed to love to be helpful.  When I show our son (who was adopted from this group) their pictures he remembers their names and tells me they were his friends.  He told me he wants them to be adopted and to come to the U.S.  How I pray that happens for Garrett and the other boys!  Garrett is so sweet and innocent, I hate to see what will happen to him if he ages out of the orphanage.

Amelia

Amelia photo 2Girl, born August 2007

Tuberos Sclerosis — Congenital Bourneville-Pringle Syndrome

Listed: April 2013

Amelia likes to dance, listen to stories, read picture books, and play hide-and-seek. She came into care around 8 months of age and was sponsored by Half the Sky Foundation’s nurturing program for infants. At 9 months, she could sit steadily alone for a few minutes, grab her feet with her hands, and hold her hands up to be held. At one year of age, she could hold toys and stand when leaning on objects. She enjoyed sitting and rocking on the wooden horse. At 15 months, she was more outgoing and could stand for a long time when holding onto a support. She could grasp toys nearby and she could walk slowly with assistance. When it was time to take a nap, she would shake her head “no.” She could pick up objects with her thumb and index fingers.

Her condition became more serious in 2009, and we hope to see her come home soon so that she can receive the best medical treatment for her condition. Her caregivers exercise her daily to improve her symptoms, and say that “she has already taken the first step in life and will do better in the future.”

Cerebral palsy

Listed: April 1, 2013

Update from a family who met her in late 2013:  Lydia is the sweetest little girl! Our kids were in the same groupa, so we got to see Lydia everyday we were in country. She is a joy! Lydia spends her days sitting in a stroller with hardly any interaction. Now that our kids are home, she is the only non-walker left in her groupa, so she is the only one who sits in a stroller all day long. She looks to be about the size of a four year old, but looks like she is a healthy weight. She’s got a little chub on her legs. Her legs are not scissored, but when I lifted her legs up, they were definitely tight.

Lydia

She needs a Mama to stretch her legs! Her legs are always bent at the knee draped over the bar of the stroller (she’s too big for her stroller). I couldn’t tell how much head control she had because her head was always supported by her stroller, but her head was always upright, not bobbing. I never saw her move her body (except to arch her back when tickled), but one day I held both of her hands, and she was able to grasp my hands tightly in hers. Neither hand seemed weak. Lydia’s vision looks pretty good. She could follow me with her eyes, but there’s a good possibility she’ll need glasses. Her poor teeth are rotten. We watched her eat lunch once and she seemed to eat well. She eats pureed food from a bottle. Did I mention she is SO sweet? Lydia seems to be very easy going. Once a child was hanging on her and pushing on her and she didn’t respond except to make a face showing that she didn’t like it. Lydia was my favorite child to interact with in the groupa. All I had to do was say hi to her and smile and she would light up EVERY single time and reward me with a big smile. We tickled her lots and she giggled away. One time she was left in a room all by herself and was crying. I peeked my head in the doorway and said hi to her and she immediately stopped crying and started smiling and giggling. She is very responsive when talked to. 🙂 Even though she is non-verbal, she communicates with lots of smiles and giggles. This little lady is FULL of joy! She will truly BLESS any family! Please, please consider this sweet little one. She is still in the babyhouse, but is one of the oldest in her groupa, so she will be one of the next children to be transferred.

She does have an older brother who is eight years old and looks to be typically developing. I’m not sure if they will need to be adopted together or separately.

Listed: October 21, 2012

Update March 2013:

Jeanette was exposed to alcohol prenatally.  She has issues with impulsivity/understanding consequences.   She is well-liked where she is, but needs additional support to succeed in school.  It’s recommended that Jeanette would do great with older children whom could help correct her behavior and could model appropriate behavioral for her.

She is very sweet and loves to draw, and color.  She pays great attention to detail in her drawings and when she is doing something she like to do like drawing she can sit still for a very long time doing it. She is also very funny and dramatic. She loves to act and dance and sing and make goofy faces and act silly to make people laugh. She could do well in a family but they would need to be prepared for FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).

Jinger

Jinger (2)

jinger-2015Girl, born June 2007

Abnormality of the head, hyperdactylia (extra digit) of left hand and left foot

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2015:  “A friend and I met her in September. She has a syndrome of some sort with a facial deformity and extra fingers and toes (6 on each). It doesn’t appear to affect her beyond the visual standpoint. Her hearing and vision are normal. She attends a public special education school where she is in the 3rd grade. Her favorite subject is art. Aspen loves vegetables, but is allergic to seafood. She loves to jump rope and play with balls. Her favorite color is pink.  The orphanage staff described her as shy, kind, friendly to other children, helpful, and obedient. She likes to play with others and is very kind to everyone. Jinger speaks clearly and can communicate just fine, though she was very shy and scared when she first met us. By the time we left, she was more comfortable and full of smiles. She enjoys singing, dancing, playing outside, and helping the nannies. Jinger is a lovely and active girl. She likes listening to music and happy tone could make her happy.

She likes to play house and could imitate putting on clothes for the dolls, feeding and dressing the dolls. She is a girl who likes beauty. She is happy when praised as a beautiful girl. Jinger likes playing games with other children. Sometimes she would help the others to put on socks or shoes. The others are happy to play with her. Jinger is polite and would greet initially with the smile on her face.

Except hyperdactylia (of left hand and left foot) and abnormity of the head she seldom gets sick except occasional cold, but she could recover soon after treatment. She is considerate and we hope that she could blossom like a flower and be happy every day.”

Julia

2015

2015

julia-2016Girl, born 2002

FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome), probable secondary CP

Julia has such happy, giant brown eyes and a smile that lights up a room!

Listed:  January 13, 2013

Update from August 2016:  Last year Julia got operated on, on her feet. This year she is walking like a queen! She gets therapy where she learns to walk in a straight line, jump, etc. It was amazing to see what she was capable of. She was talking a lot this year. It’s very hard to understand her, even if you speak the language, but the girls that she has been in a group with for many years understand her completely and are capable of having conversations together. She loves to go on the swing, she hates to get off again. 😉

It is hard to tell what she does and doesn’t understand. She hardly responded to any question that was asked. She only answered question about whether or not she wanted to walk around the building, go on the swing, play with the ball. It was hard to tell if she wasn’t interested in answering other questions or that she didn’t understand the other questions or didn’t know the answer.

This year she showed less harming behaviors, but they were not totally gone. See does bite herself or other smaller children around her sometimes. There doesn’t seem to be a specific reason for it. It happens on random moments. But she is totally not an aggressive girl, she is so cheerful and enthusiastic. She has been a hero in her rehab therapy. It makes me think that she can achieve a lot if she gets the chance and sets her mind to it. I would really look forward to see how she’d thrive in a family!

UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 2015: “Julia is a very enthusiastic girl. I don’t know how else I should put it in words. Meeting Julia is an experience. She is one blast of fun and energy and happiness. When I met Julia I called her my little monkey, because as soon as your within reach, she will grab you (whereever she can) and she will climb on you. And she will hold on so tight that you don’t even have to hold her. She won’t fall. She is really strong. She loves to be hold This spring Julia got operated on her feet. Before her feet were shaped like how ballerinas hold their feet while dancing. This summer she was wearing casts and one of our last days the casts were taken off and her feet are straight. Even with the casts she was already walking on her own, without the casts she did the same. Walking was very hard for her before the operation. She could amaze me sometimes by getting up and walking a couple steps to reach something she really wanted, but now she was really capable of walking, not just a couple steps. She is still in a wheelchair most of the time though. Julia is potty trained and will tell if she has to use it. She can dress (or at least undress) herself. She can play accurate with toys, like dolls, or pretend play with kitchen tools. She also tries to brush hair and put a band in it. She is really careful when she does that. She can drink from a cup and eat by herself. Julia can say some words, she doesn’t speak in sentences. She understands what is being said to her. Julia is pretty social if you compare her to many of the other children in her group. She is willing to share toys sometimes. She likes to show you around and show you beautiful things, like flowers. She has a hard time sharing personal attention though. She just wants someone for her own. Someone that she doesn’t have to share. She wants someone who has time for her, sees her, likes her. And it’s not hard to like her. With her big smile, her beaming eyes and her loving hugs it’s easy to fall in love with this girl. Last year we think she was sedated many days that we were there. She would hardly respond to anything. She would only hold my hand, but she wouldn’t even try to hold it when I walked away. We expect that they sedated her because she is such an energetic girl and there was a lack of staff last year. This year we didn’t see that anymore. Things are better in her facility than last year. She will most likely also get some kind of physical therapy now that her casts are taken off. I’ve seen some self-harming behaviors in Julia. Sometimes she bites herself or pinches herself. She can do this so badly that she starts to bleed. She can also bite and pinch others when she is upset. This is not regular behavior for her, but I’ve seen it happen. Julia is a loving girl who desperately needs a family. She has a sweet character with a lot of fire in her spirit as well. She needs someone to get her out there, before she loses the fire in her eyes.”

From a volunteer who visited with her in July 2014:  “I know Julia as a big Drama Queen. She loves attention and she’ll do anything to draw your attention. But not this year. I don’t know if she was on heavier sedatives or that she lost her strength to fight for attention. The only thing she’d do was take my hand as I walked by. Normally she’d wheel after me and try to climb on me, but it seems like there was no strength left. I missed my Julia as I know her, my little monkey. I want her to find back her energy to get out of life what’s in there. She’s an amazing girl and she deserves a loving family. She Always has a big smile on her face and she’s really caring. She takes care of dolls as if they are real babies. She feeds them, changes their diapers. She loves to play with my hair and she actually tries to put the band in it. She is amazing! She would be such a good daughter! “

From someone who met her:   Julia is a girl that I know as the girl with the big smile.  Somehow she just seem to smile almost always. She’s a little monkey. Whenever somebody enters her group she would crawl up to that person and just start to climb on him/her. She doesn’t even need you to give her a hand, she’ll just climb up without any help and then she hangs on your neck, looking around, proud, as if she wants to say ‘Did you see that? Do you see where I am?’

Guardian AngelHer favorite toy is a doll. She plays with it as if it is a baby. Keeping the doll up straight, putting her down carefully. She feeds and clothes the doll. One of the nurses showed her how she should put a cotton diaper on the doll, she totally loved it. She even sings lullabies for the doll and she’ll ask visitors to do the same. She also loves to play with long hair. She really tries to make ponytails or braids.

Julia is able to walk, but her legs are really crooked, and she needs help to keep standing or to walk.  Julia is described as curious and enthusiastic.

Penelope

Girl, born 2008
PRC

Listed: Nov 2012

Penelope has been diagnosed as deaf. She is also post-operative for a PDA heart condition and has received treatment for cataracts, which do limit her vision. Penelope can visually perceive light and people moving around her.

Penelope came into care when she was about a year and a half old. She has good development of fine motor skills in that she could do the motions of grasping, holding, picking and putting things down as well as feeding herself. She has a strong sense of curiosity and experiences the world primarily by touch. We hope she can be adopted by a family who can provide her with the special education and care she needs.

Jolina

Girl, born August 2007
Nervous system disorders, mental delays

Jolina is a darling girl, waiting for her forever family!   She has some features of FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).  This is a cautionary disclosure, not a diagnosis.

Update from April 2014: Jolina is a beautiful girl and she is very sweet! Her eyes are mesmerizing and full of hope and excitement. She is attentive to her nannies and seems to follow their instructions well. Jolina longs for attention and it is obvious that she has a desire for a family. She immediately wanted to call me “mama” and she patted the bench to let us know she wanted us to sit down near her. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet but she was walking around the room and she pulled a chair over to sit right in front of us. Jolina didn’t say much while we were in the room, so its hard to say how much she talks. Her orphanage was lovely and we would adopt from there again if given the choice. Jolina’s photo does not do her justice and sadly she seems very overlooked! We can’t wait to see Jolina with her forever family!

Jessica

guardianangelGirl, born July 2004

cerebral palsy

Listed: September 29, 2012

Jessica is a shy and sensitive little girl. She is also timid.

Jessica was abandoned by her parents in front of our institute in 2005 due to her cerebral palsy. At the time, her complexion was dark and she was skinny. She could neither walk nor talk. In the institute, she is a very good girl who did not cry without reason. We all treasure her. When she interacts with other children, she likes to hold hands with them and touch their faces. Most interestingly, she takes very good care of her toys as they are always the cleanest and complete after she plays with them. For all of this, she is constantly praised by our caretakers.

Because of her cerebral palsy, Jessica has limitations in movement and speech. She received rehabilitation treatment in the institute for a period of time. From July 2011, she received rehabilitation treatment  for half a year. Currently, she can walk slowly when holding onto something. She can also say some simple words. For example, she can say the names of all the children in the institute. Because she is timid, she cannot walk freely for fear of falling. She’s afraid to step forward and would sometimes just sit on the floor. We would tell her encouraging words everyday, for Jessica is a child in need of much encouragement.

Daisy

Girl, born July 2006
PRC
Cerebral Palsy, congenital heart disease

Listed:  September 29, 2012

Daisy was already 2 years old at the time of her arrival to the institute. She could neither walk nor speak at the time. She was also very skinny with a large head. Following an initial physical examination, it was found she had a congenital heart disease. She had lackluster complexion and dull eyes. The caretakers thought it was a miracle that she would survive. She has a strong will to live and has a healthy appetite. She eats three meals a day and is not a picky eater.

After a period of care, she slowly gained weight and colored returned to her complexion. Even more encouraging is that she began to speak. She will call the caretaker often, which made the caretakers very happy. She took her first step in May 2009 and surprised everyone when she started walking. Most fortunately is in all this time she has been in our institute, her heart disease has never surfaced. She has been living happily.

Liam

Liam 2014 (2)Boy, born March 2006

Cerebral Palsy, significant mental delays

Listed: August 13, 2012

Not a great picture, but Liam is a cutie!   Even though he has CP, it’s nice to see him in a place that has him up and about.
Large families welcome, married couples only.
From a family who met him in 2014: This little guy tried for 5 minutes to get my attention before I could come over to him. Although he is mostly nonverbal, his receptive language is good, and he was able to follow instructions and respond to our conversation. I asked what he could do physically, and he immediately began pushing the cover back and trying to flip over, to show me he could roll, and pull up on the side of the bed. He is very sweet, and so very much wants OUT of the bed and to be up walking, but without proper medical intervention and regular therapy, he won’t be able to. His outgoing, sunny personality is absolutely wonderful! His biological mother died 4 years ago, and he entered the orphanage then, so he had that solid foundation of a loving mom during the important years. From a CP perspective- all four limbs are involved, and he has high tone in his torso that makes it difficult for him to sit up, because when he gets excited, his tone kicks in and it flattens him back out. He also has significant spasticity in his legs, particularly in his heel cords and hamstrings. That is something that in the USA might be treated with a medicine like Baclofen, which would allow him more flexibility. He’s very affectionate and easygoing, and constantly tries to get up and move around like the other kids. He just really needs a family to help him reach his potential!

Cambria

Cambria smiling March 2014Girl, born January 2005

Anophthalmos (absence of eyes)

Listed: August 13, 2012

What a sweet little girl!  She is walking independently. Married couples only, large families welcome!

Update June 2013:
Don’t let Cambria’s pictures fool you. She is happy and full of life. Usually, she is stuck in bed for her own safety, as the nannies are afraid she could fall or run into something and hurt herself. When I took her out, she was able to walk, run, and dance to the music playing on the TV in the room. She loves dancing! She started laughing when I clapped my hands in front of her face and when I sneezed. She is an absolutely angelic little girl. While I do believe she has some institutional autism, she would be a joy in any family, and with love and proper care will thrive.

Update March 2014:
Although she mostly lays around because she cannot see, she walks and dances; she loves music. She is extremely gentle, and sensitive to noises.  She loves to be swung around and rocked gently, and that also makes her giggle.

What a cutie!  And what a world of different a head of hair would make for her, she needs to be in pigtails!

Update March 2014:
Very sweet and energetic little girl, eager to play and interact. She definitely has cognitive delays, and does not speak but functions within the preschool type setting classroom of her groupa. She communicates by pointing and making sounds. She appears to have something like hemiplegia CP affecting the right side of her body, causing a big of a drag in her leg as she walks, and causing her arm to be stiff on that side as well. FAS, Mixed developmental disorders; congenital malformations of ribs; Coloboma of optic disc; strabismus; Mild protein-energy malnutrition

NEW PHOTO DECEMBER 2016

Cecily should be getting ready for kindergarten, not an institution!

Update March 2014:
I LOVE this girl!!!! She is so poised and smart and sweet and totally impressed me when I would interact with her. She’s very formal and polite when she meets new people, but as soon as she would go back into her classroom, she would be playing and laughing and giggling with her friends. She and Cara are friends and play together often. She’s a very typical kid, and often took a leadership role when playing with the other kids. One day, she was playing with my daughter, doing some kind of pretend play, and it was quite fun to watch! She’s in a groupa that does a lot of preschool type work, and and is set up like a classroom so the kids come home with more age- appropriate skills. Our just-turned-3 year old daughter knows how to work puzzles, hold a crayon/pencil properly to write (and is showing pre-writing skills already), understands the concept of counting, etc- not the “norm” for orphanage life! So, kids from this groupa will likely come home knowing how to play appropriately with toys but also prepared to learn in a school-type setting as well.

Guardian AngelBoy, born May 2007

Cerebral palsy, seizures

Listed: July 21, 2011

-Josiah-

From someone who works with him:  We have had the privilege of caring for Josiah for 3 years. He is the oldest child in our care and has been with us longer than any other child. Josiah was abandoned at a nearby hospital when he was 1. Josiah has cerebral palsy and requires special care and attention. He has limited control over his movement and needs support when sitting. For 3 years, our nannies and staff have cared for Josiah, fed him and bathed him. Ask any person who has cared for Josiah though and they will say that they are the one who was blessed.

When you are with Josiah, it is clear that God’s love resides in Josiah. Josiah can’t talk, but he loves to smile and interact with anyone who will talk to him. Josiah cannot sing like most of us, but each day during nanny prayer and singing Josiah joins in with a big smile. Our deep desire is for Josiah to join his forever family through adoption. We have had difficulty finding that family, but we know that God has a plan for Josiah . We also know that where ever he goes, Josiah will be a blessing as his loved ones bless and care for him.

Update Jan 2015:  Josiah has been with us longer than any other child and is waiting for his forever family. He was abandoned at a nearby hospital when he was a year old. Josiah has cerebral palsy. He can be very interactive and seems to comprehend what is being said to him. He does have seizures that are being controlled with medication. He loves when people sing songs with him. Josiah is a very happy and loving boy. He is always full of smiles.

Josiah can hold his head up, and is practicing learning how to sit, although he has not yet mastered this skill on his own. He prefers the tripod position while someone supports his efforts. Josiah is very strong and his muscles are often tight; he is receiving therapy to help him relax and control his muscles better. Josiah is nonverbal, but can still express several of his needs very well; he will cry if he wants attention and will happily reward you with a smile when you talk with or sing to him.  Our deep desire is for Josiah to join his forever family through adoption. We have had difficulty finding that family, but we know that God has a plan for Josiah . We also know that where ever he goes, Josiah will be a blessing as his loved ones bless and care for him.

Peter

-Peter-Boy, born December 2007
H-C
Cerebral palsy, sickle cell anemia, kerion

Photos available.

From someone who works with him:
Resiliency only begins to describe Peter! This young boy has gone through so much medically, yet still finds the strength to smile through it all. No matter what, rubbing his head will produce a sweet smile of pure contentment and a look of peace in his eyes! Peter certainly has faced more than his share of medical challenges these past months. For quite some time, he was experiencing both scalp and skin issues that were resistant to seemingly all conventional treatments. After a long course of steroids and special mixtures of creams, Peter has finally experienced some relief and his skin is in the process of healing. While he has a history of seizures and is positive for sickle cell, both of those conditions are wonderfully under control with daily medications. Peter enjoys receiving special care and attention and really responds well to being able to attach to certain people he can trust.

Update Jan 2015:  Peter has lived with us for the past several years. He has cerebral palsy and sickle cell anemia. He cannot sit independently, but he can hold his head up in his chair or during tummy time. He has a skin condition called, “kerion,” but this is usually fairly well controlled with special creams and shampoos. He has frequent muscle spasms and is on medication for seizures. In the past several months, we have seen Peter learn to express himself more, and are seeing more of his adorable smile! Peter recently had a g-tube placed and is now getting fed through this. He can also eat soft foods by mouth and these are offered to him regularly. Peter enjoys receiving special care and attention and really responds well to being able to attach to certain people he can trust. His favorite nanny tells us that he calls her, “grandma”.

Update Feb 2018: “Peter” is so alert and aware of everything going on around him. He is great at visual tracking and watches everyone carefully. He’s also starting to use eye gaze to communicate between choices and his new special education teacher has learned through this method that he knows his letters and numbers. He can’t control his movements well but can sometimes communicate on the yes/no board using eye gaze. Even though he is one of the oldest boys in the house, he still enjoys some cuddle time and will really relax if we hold him in the right position.
