Troy

TroyBoy, born September 2003Troy-001

mild mental delays

Listed: May 6, 2011

Troy has been transferred to the local Internat.  He is listed as having a mild mental delay.  (His eyes look odd here because of the red eye reduction used on the photograph.)  Troy does not speak, but understands speech addressed to him.

From a family who met him in 2012:  The profile says he is non-verbal and that is true, he did not talk at all while I was there.  However he was extremely gentle, kind, and had a very sweet demeanor.  I took bubbles one day and all the kids mobbed me wanting to play, Troy just stood there patiently smiling at me and waiting his turn.  I don’t think I ever saw him without a smile on his face.  He would sit next to me at the table and would stare very sweetly at me and when I would make eye contact he would put his arms out to give me a hug.  I do not know about his cognitive ability because I just did not get to spend enough time with him but he did understand the instructions he was given by his teacher and care taker at the boarding school with no problems, obeying them and following all their instructions (with a smile on his face).  Physically he had no problems.  I do not know if his lack of speech is due to trauma or an actual inability to form words.  I will absolutely never forget how gentle and loving he was, he lives to be hugged and he loved what little one-on-one attention I was able to give him.  He was so patient and kind to the other kids.  A family would be blessed to have this precious boy as their son!

Cullen has been through WAY too many living situations and he needs a true *forever family*.  The agency can provide more details on this for you.

Cullen was born prematurely at 32 weeks gestation and was kept alive on an incubator for 4 days. His birth mother reported that she used amphetamine weekly since 16 weeks gestation, but Cullen was not reported to have any withdrawal symptoms. Cullen was diagnosed with cerebral hypoplasia. Francis

Boy, born Oct 2004

This young man has a deep mental delay, and cerebral palsy.

Listed: November 11, 2011

From a family who met him in 2011:

Sweet Francis needs a family.  He does not currently sit up, but I think he probably could if he were given an opportunity to be out of his chair and get stronger.  Overall, Francis seems to be physically healthy, aside from his CP.  I suspect his cerebral palsy affects his upper and lower body.  He is very tight.  More concerning is his emotional well being.  Francis does not get much mental stimulation or interaction, outside of his immediate basic needs.  The caregivers are kind and do love him, but are unsure what to do with him.  He gets good basic care.  He is fed and is clean.  He is not left in a crib.  He sits in his orange chair all day long.  I tried to talk to Francis and touch him.  He is very uncomfortable with touch, but he has the sweetest blue eyes and I know that the right family could draw this little boy out of his shell.  Please someone, take a chance on Francis.  He will thrive with the proper care and stimulation.

Irina

irina2015-3irina-2016Girl, Born March 5, 2005

Listed: prior to 2010

Cleft palate, possible FAS

From a volunteer who visited with her in August 2016:  Irina’s update from last year is still very accurate. Her introvert and shy behaviors got more though. She prefers not to interact at all. It took me half of our trip to get her to trust me enough to walk around the building with us and she would still not look at me. She avoids any eye contact. She did enjoy the attention though. She still loves to sit on someones lap. She has grown even more than last year. This year she had become too heavy for me to carry her.

I think Irina wants to get out of the facility. She was transferred to this facility a couple years ago. Before she lived here, she lived in a ‘normal orphanage’ with a special needs group. When they lost their funding she was transferred here. When we take her for a walk she walks to the gate and she just stares at the world outside of those gates. She realizes there is an entire world out there. One day the nurses saw us at the gate though and they yelled at us for minutes. We were not allowed to take Irina there, she could walk away. The gate is closed and locked and we were there with her, so there was no way she’d walk away, but from that day on Irina was even more closed and she lost most of the initiative while walking. She even lost her interest in the swing. She needs someone she can trust, someone who she’ll know will stay and will love her. She has already been listed for so long! She needs a family!

From a volunteer who visited with her in July 2015:  ” Irina is a beautiful girl with dark hair and big dark eyes. She has a cleft palate. She is a precious and happy little girl. She loves personal attention. She is craving attention and physical touch. If it was up to her she’d be held and hugged all day. She can react really shy to people who talk to her and especially when yelled at, she will become really introvert. She is a really sweet girl. Irina is a physically quite healthy girl. She is well nourished, she can walk, run, swing, etc. Her physical development is good, compared with the other children in the same facility. She seems to have a strong body. She knows how to use a swing properly and can swing by herself. She enjoys it a lot. She can play accurate with toys, like dolls, or pretend play with kitchen tools. She knows how to walk stairs. She can dress and undress herself. She can drink from a cup and eat by herself. She is potty trained and will tell if she has to use the bathroom. She doesn’t talk, most likely because of her cleft palate. She doesn’t make noises, but her eyes express a lot about how she feels. And her smile will tell you when she enjoys something. She understands what is being said to her and she can follow orders. When Irina is in the group, she’ll try to stay away from the others. She prefers to play by herself, but she is also capable of interacting with other children or adults. She prefers to play with children who are smaller or younger than her, probably because they are no threat to her. Last year I saw how she was being bullied by other (bigger) children. She tries to flee from bullies (and from yelling), but there is nowhere to go. This year she is doing much better. She has grown physically, which made her less of a target for the bigger children. Maybe also because new smaller children are in the group now. Sometimes she’s still the target of bullying and harming behaviour, but at other moments she will show these behaviours herself. She can be a bully to the smaller children herself. I think this is her way of showing that she is stronger now, but this is no good development. The longer children are in this facility, the more harming behaviour they show. Irina is still able to receive love, but time is ticking away. She needs a family. She would thrive in a family where she could be ‘the baby’.”

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition. Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively. This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much. There is no way to know this ahead of time.

Irina has been transferred to the older child internat now.   Elinor, Devora, Julia,  Sullivan, Artemur, Duane, Abner and Irina may all be in the same region.

NEW PHOTO JUNE 2016

Jason spends his time either in a crib or in a stroller, sitting outside.

He needs a lot of love and attention … He is a good, sweet child, but he has a lot of self-injuring behaviors.  Unfortunately, he is often restrained because he hits himself really hard.

From a  family who visited with him in June 2013:   I saw Jason this morning. I got to take him for a walk in the stroller, play with him, feed him (twice!), and get him ready for his nap. He is wonderful. He loved it when I made my hand crawl up his belly and tickle him under the chin. I was rewarded with loud laughing and a huge smile. He liked to have me rub his feet, and whenever I would stop he would stick his little foot up for more. He makes noises but he does not talk. He can walk if he holds both of your hands, but he prefers to crawl as he can go faster. He is the king of the bouncy seat. He sits in it whenever he can, and he shooed away another child who came too close. 😉 He is about the size of a four year old and is in a 4/5 shirt. He’s heavier than I thought he would be, but I can carry him easily. I’m totally in love.

10 day wait often waived here.  Married couples only, larger families welcome.

Alicia

alicia6Girl, Born 2004

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!  ALICIA HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED.

SO THANKFUL FOR A NEW PIC OF ALICIA!!   Miss Alicia is a beautiful little girl who needs a loving family.  Her other two typically developing sisters were adopted by other families already.

Listed: August 7, 2010
Alicia was born to an HIV+ mother, and is HIV+ herself.  She has also has significant delays and challenges associated with her FAS.  (fetal alcohol syndrome).  We are waiting to learn if she has any medical complications, but she is cognitively delayed and does show signs of attention deficit and hyperactivity.    Alicia will do best where she can be the focus of attention and have her Daddy wrapped around her finger 🙂    Alicia has SO much potential, and deserves a family as much as her other sisters do.   I know there is a family out there for this little girl!  She is facing the mental institution soon, but has grown up in a loving and well kept orphanage so far.  A committed family now can prevent her transfer!

From an adoptive family who visited with her in July 2010:  ” Alicia absolutely LOVES one on one attention. she is front and center if you are handing out kisses and hugs. You can see she wants a Mama all her own, and it will be so hard on her to have her sister leave to be adopted, as her other sister was already adopted.   (Their mother is deceased, most likely from AIDS).   She likes to swing.   She loved to lay her head in my lap while we were both on the bench swing and I would stroke her hair. The other kids didnt like to share my attention but Alicia was ok with it.   I could have two in my lap and she didn’t mind, but she didnt like being crowded out when the other child decided they wanted me all to themselves.  She likes sensory input.   She kept rubbing her arm across my husband’s unshaved face and shivering and making the funniest face and then immediately doing it again.  She likes to go down the slide again and again.   She really likes to be in the  middle of whatever is going on, and be included. But often she is excluded, even by attendants.  For Alicia it’s a vicious circle. She is delayed, she gets frustrated, they don’t let her do things the others are doing, she gets more delayed and more frustrated. She is VERY VERY SWEET AND LOVING.  She needs a family that has only a couple kids, not ten. She has HIV.   If you want a little girl to hug and kiss, she will GLADLY take all the hugs and kisses you can hand out. She isn’t afraid of men but isn’t inappropriate either. I saw her with my husband as well as another couple of young men who visit regularly.  Alicia is on the small side, like maybe size 4.  The children are valued and loved at this orphanage.   The grounds are visually stimulating and the kids get outside for a couple hours in the morning as well as afternoon.   They even go swimming in the pool they have there.   Hope someone will come for Alicia very soon!”   Alicia is toilet-trained and able to say when she needs to use the restroom.  She has tremendous potential if someone would take her home and love her!

Denis

DenisBOY, born July 2006

From his medical records:  epilepsy, frequent seizures therapeutic resistant, spastic tetraparesis, craniostenosis, gastroesophogeal reflux, congenital endogastritis

More photos available

From an adoptive family in summer 2012:
We saw Denis three different times at large group events at this orphanage, and he is a very cute little boy. He is small for his age, and he was in a wheelchair the times I saw him (that may have been just for transport). But he was alert and following what was going on (a puppet show once, and a musical performance another time) with real interest.  He looked content and in a good mood every time we saw him.

This region typically waives the 10 day waiting period for children with special needs.

Update March 2014:
Denis is a very handsome little guy. He is nonverbal, but makes a high trilling/singing sound or squeals when he is happy or trying to communicate. He looks like he is about the size of a 4 year old, however his abdomen is quite large (barrel shaped) while his arms and legs and hands are very thin and tiny. He is in a wheelchair and does not walk. His little body shakes often, from his head to his toes, which may be seizure activity. He’s very alert and watches what goes on, but does not appear very interested in interacting with people specifically. He is in a room with many other older, more mobile boys, so he may simply feel overwhelmed with the activity and constant movement.

Kelan #

boy: 2004

Listed: April 2017

Diagnoses:  Grand Mal seizures; Epilepsy Partialis; brain edema; attachment disorder; Nocturnal Enuresis; learning abilities.

Kelan is from Eastern Europe.  He was placed in a baby house shortly after birth and is currently residing in a group home for children.  Kelan’s attention is lacking.  He can concentrate on routine tasks for short periods of time. His memory is not accurate and his thinking process is slow.  Although his vocabulary needs improvement, he understands the meaning of the words used in everyday life.  He does not have good communication skills but he can express his emotions. He often violates the personal space of others. His self-evaluation of himself wavers as sometimes it is too high and other times it is too low. He cannot maintain friendships. He quickly loses interest in the learning process at school and doesn’t follow the rules.

Kelan is a happy and cheerful child!  He is very emotional. He wants to play with the other children but often teases them by taking their possessions and insults them which leads to conflicts. He insults the other children, throws things at them and uses bad words. After a while he calms down. He easily gets upset. Sometimes he overreacts by crying or laughing.  It is important for him to receive approval from adults (including the teachers at school) but does not always comply with requirements. He is affectionate and seeks care from adults. He is not shy and does not feel guilt. He likes to help with the household chores – cooks, cleans, irons. He participates in culinary clubs. He likes to play with the children from the group home. He also likes physical activities: soccer, volleyball, badminton, and riding bikes.

Montgomery #

Boy: 2001

Diagnoses:  Triventricular internal hydrocephalus; evacuation of a hematoma; Posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations (AVM); mild to moderate mental delay.

AGES OUT IN JULY 2017!!!

Listed: April 2017

A family must file the I-800A Immigration application before his 16th birthday

His medical diagnoses include Triventricluar internal hydrocephalus; evacuation of a hematoma; Posterior fossa arteriovenous malformations (AVM); mild to moderate mental delay.  Montgomery’s physical development is normal for his age. His psychomotor development does not  correspond to his age. Montgomery moves around by himself but exhibits some clumsiness in his gait due to the underdeveloped gross motor skills. His fine motor skills are not developed – the coordination between arms and legs is compromised.  Montgomery understands and carries out simple instructions. He maintains adequate eye contact and recognizes familiar people from strangers. His abstract thinking does not correspond to his age and he lacks concentration. He has difficulties in reproducing words and concepts. His memory is short-termed and he has difficulties in storing information related to quantity and time.

Montgomery’s emotional development does not correspond to his age as he has a low degree of emotional intellect. No aggression is observed in his behavior. His frustration level is average having in mind that he is a teenager. Sometimes affected behavior is observed when he is unable to complete a task and often he just refuses to complete a given activity.  Montgomery has problems with articulation and has poor vocabulary. He communicates with his peers and adults via verbal and non-verbal means of communication. He prefers to play individually, but he is also willing to take part in group activities and maintains good relationships with his peers and the staff. He seeks emotional warmth and makes physical contact with the others – taking somebody by the hand and hugging. His speech is hard to understand – he uses short and simple sentences that are badly constructed.  Montgomery is interested in creative activities – modeling and drawing. He is motivated and willing to acquire everyday self-service skills.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, he will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for him.

Kevin

KevinBoy, born March 2007
PRC
possible muscular dystrophy

Kevin’s story is so heartbreaking. He was brought to the orphanage when he was 4 years old; scared, lonely, and confused. They decided to give him an IQ/DQ test just a few months after he arrived; he did not score very high (not surprising at all, given the trauma of the past few months!). He appeared to be in good health overall. Kevin came to the U.S. as part of an agency’s host program. At that time, he was active, healthy-looking, and doing well. When he returned to his orphanage, his physical health began to decline. Currently, Kevin is unable to walk any distance at all without falling. He requires help to get up off the floor, or from the toilet. He can only eat soft foods that are easy to chew. There is a strong possibility that Kevin has muscular dystrophy. Throughout it all, Kevin has remained a positive outlook, a loving nature, and a great compassion for others. Kevin is now 8 years old. He is currently in a foster home at the orphanage, and takes care of the younger children there. Kevin needs a family of his own, in an area that can provide him the care and treatments he will need.

Byron is a bright child, whose cognitive abilities are the same as other children his age. He speaks in complete sentences with clear pronunciation, other than a slight regional accent. He has no problem communicating with adults, and can express his ideas and needs freely. In December, the orphanage sent him to a foster home for special training to help his cerebral palsy, and before too long they saw big improvements! His muscles were weak from lack of use, but he had a strong desire to learn to stand and walk. After six months of therapy he was basically independent in daily life. He gets along well with other children in the foster home and at school; when they occasionally have a disagreement they work it out quickly. He enjoys playing with toy cars and balls, and also likes drawing and doing handicrafts. Byron also loves field trips! This determined boy is waiting for a family who can help him continue his great progress!

Shia

Shia (2) Shia (1)Boy, born February 2007
PRC
Mild cerebral palsy

Shia is being hosted in the US this winter!

Shia is a little introverted, but he is friendly and willing to connect with others after a while. His health and intellectual developments are average. However, his motor abilities are somewhat behind those of other children. When he moves about, the left side of his body is a little limited due to his minor cerebral palsy.

Shia now attends school. He gets along with the children in his class. He likes to play with children the same age and he likes a variety of toys. He is currently in special education in his foster family. A particular note from the head of the foster family: Shia is afraid of small animals. We hope Shia finds a forever family soon!

Updated: Jan 2, 2015:  Shia is a happy, sweet, affectionate, and playful boy who is easy to get along with. He is a bit shy, but he is beginning to open up more. He enjoys reading, drawing, playing with his host sisters, chasing them with a squirt gun, and playing video games. He is becoming more talkative and more outgoing. He loves to be tickled and enjoys laughing with his host sisters. He is very calm; he has not had any tantrums and has not yelled or screamed at all. He is a bit fearful of animals, but is starting to pet the host family’s dog. He is a great eater and is not picky at all; he likes pizza, fruit, vegetables, rice, meat, and pasta; he actually does not like using chopsticks. The host family is trying to teach him that he can use his weaker hand.

Graham

graham-video-still-feb-2017-feb-2017Graham Photo 2 Oct-2014Handsome Graham was born in April of 2007. He is developmentally delayed, does not speak and does not make sounds. He seems to understand some of what is said to him. He may also have cerebral palsy or another disorder affecting his motor skills.

Graham is described as kind, friendly, smiley, and joyful. He is very active and enjoys participating in games. Graham can complete a task when you repeat the instructions many times and show him what to do.

While he does not speak, he understands most of what is said to him and generally follows the instructions of his caretakers. He dresses and undresses without assistance. Nigel

nigel-video-still-feb-2017-feb-2017Nigel Photo 2 Oct-2014Nigel was born prematurely at 29 weeks gestation in February of 2007, weighing 1500g. At the age of two months, Nigel was diagnosed with hypertensive syndrome and deformation of the head. A neurologist has also stated that his cerebellum is small and that is why he had some problems with coordination (in the past).

Nigel was brought to the orphanage when he was 5 months old and lived with his parents until that time. At the orphanage his issues with coordination improved and at present there are no concerns. He is able to walk, run and is very active. After being placed in the orphanage it was also found that he has a hearing impairment. He has not had a full hearing screen but it has been suggested that his impairment is rather severe. His caretakers are apprehensive of anesthesia needing to be used to check the issue further and will wait to see if there are other options. Nigel also has vision impairment, but he does not wear glasses at this time as he ends up breaking them. He is described as a happy boy, who is also very neat. He does not like when something is not in its place or the table is dirty or his clothes are dirty. He lets the caretakers know about it and ask them to clean it. He does not speak and does not say sounds, but is able to let his caretakers know what he wants by gestures. He loves going outside and is also very friendly.

Update February 2017: Nigel has come a long way since transferring to his current orphanage. He wears hearing aids, follows instructions, is described as neat and clean, and participates actively in games. He especially enjoys his occupational therapy sessions and crafts. In new video, Nigel can be seen answering questions with sign language and counting.

Additional photos and video are available upon request from the agency.

Nigel is located in the same orphanage as Graham and Ashton, and the boys could be adopted together.

Joel

JoelBoy, born March 2007
PRC
cerebral hypoplasia and epilepsy

Joel’s motor and intellectual development at present:- he can walk alone, go upstairs and downstairs holding the wall, and can put on pants and shoes by himself. Joel is quiet, gregarious, and very curious. He is very fond of playing toy cars with partners and most interested in playing games with adults. He feels safe, happy, and satisfied in the institute with the caretakers’ careful nursing. He has close and intimate relationship with the caretakers. Agency staff recently met him and said this about him: Joel is a happy child. He has lived in the orphanage for several months and does not attend school. He can count to 3. He has not learned English. He likes to watch television and sing along with people on TV. When he entered the orphanage they believed he had epilepsy, but he has never had a seizure. They also said he had hydrocephalus but even without any treatment, it appears to have cured itself. Even his hair has grown in and is much healthier since his arrival. Two things noted were that he runs slower than the other children and when he gets a high fever, he can’t even stand up. He is potty trained.

Cecily

cecilycecily-2016-1Girl, born January 2007

FAS, Mixed developmental disorders; congenital malformations of ribs; Coloboma of optic disc; strabismus; Mild protein-energy malnutrition

NEW PHOTO DECEMBER 2016

Cecily should be getting ready for kindergarten, not an institution!

Update March 2014:
I LOVE this girl!!!! She is so poised and smart and sweet and totally impressed me when I would interact with her. She’s very formal and polite when she meets new people, but as soon as she would go back into her classroom, she would be playing and laughing and giggling with her friends. She and Cara are friends and play together often. She’s a very typical kid, and often took a leadership role when playing with the other kids. One day, she was playing with my daughter, doing some kind of pretend play, and it was quite fun to watch! She’s in a groupa that does a lot of preschool type work, and and is set up like a classroom so the kids come home with more age- appropriate skills. Our just-turned-3 year old daughter knows how to work puzzles, hold a crayon/pencil properly to write (and is showing pre-writing skills already), understands the concept of counting, etc- not the “norm” for orphanage life! So, kids from this groupa will likely come home knowing how to play appropriately with toys but also prepared to learn in a school-type setting as well.
