Carolina

Carolina 2013 (3)carolina-2017Girl, Born May 2006

Listed: August 6, 2010

Carolina is such a beautiful girl; beautiful brown hair with olive skin.  She has cerebral palsy, and does wear AFO’s on both feet.

From her medical records: Cerebral palsy, convergent squint, mental delay.   She can walk by supporter or holding one hand.  She says separate words, understands simple speech, is affectionate and friendly.   Physical therapy and a loving family will bring MIRACLES for this little girl!

Carolina was transferred in 2011 to a boarding school (not an institution).

New pic January 2017!

UPDATE August 2013:

Carolina is a beautiful girl! She is about 4ft tall and about 50lbs. Her CP affects her mostly from the knees down. She does have cytomegalovirus. This was reconfirmed last year, but we were not able to find out if it is active, or if she merely was exposed while her mother was pregnant with her. CMV does cause brain damage if a baby is exposed in utero, so a family needs to be prepared for that, or for the fact that is IS transmissible when it flares. She is very strong and she does make her likes and dislikes known. Her biggest love is candy…but not chocolate! She likes white chocolate a lot though. She likes dolls, and can undress them herself. She has good use of her hands. She gets around by crawling or knee walking, which is great. Knee walking shows her hips are nice and strong. She loves to “dance.” Dancing, to her, is an adult bouncing her up and down for as long as you can stand to do it. She gets quite unhappy when you stop to take a break. The nannies make her walk a bit while holding onto hands, but her legs and feet are just not able to line up with her being so tight. She is very strong. She loves cell phones and will try to snatch them at any opportunity. A toy cell phone that plays music would be nice for her. She speaks, though it is like a toddler. She repeats the same few things over and over, but she does say a couple other words and used them correctly. She understands much more though and the caretakers speak to her in complete sentences. She just loves to move and bounce and be twirled around. She likes BIG movements. She was very briefly startled by my husband, but quickly discovered he could bounce her around longer and higher than I could…and so she quickly preferred him!

Carolina does have some institutional behaviors that a family needs to be prepared for. Her moods change quickly, and when she gets upset, she can throw herself to the floor, even injuring herself. She will hit, pull hair, etc if she is upset. She will throw large toys as well. The caretakers love her, but did express that she would likely not engage or interact with kids bigger than her, and would be likely to assert herself over anyone smaller. That is just how life in these places is. Families without small children would be best for her. An involved, hands-on Papa would be ideal, and a trampoline would be out of this world for her.

The girl is well disposed towards school: she already can sit by the table with help completes the tasks, for a short time started to concentrate her attention to the task she is interested in. She is able to complete the task if proper motivation is provided. Still the girl’s activities in general are chaotic, non-meaningful and in consecutive order. She understands short instructions. General knowledge about herself and environment still are limited. She can show some items in her surrounding environment. Speaks in sounds/words, short words which needs the correction; is able to express her wishes, emotions, understands when misbehaved and comes close to a person and touches saying sorry and expressing her apology. She always asks when need to go to the bathroom and walks accompanied by the teacher‘s assistant. Her hygiene skills needs to be improved, but they are in place. The school bus takes Maddie from care institution and brings her back.

Look at sweet Edith, all dolled up for the New Year’s party at her orphanage!

She has had a broken nose because when she lived in the family her mother’s boyfriend pushed her and she fell and broke the nose. Two foreign families have visited her but did not end up adopting her.

One of our adoptive families has met her, and has video of her for inquiring families. “Edith was was much in need of one on one attention but did not even know how to be held. She was whiney, but very willing to share her chocolate with anyone and everyone.  Edith played with the other girls and was sociable. You could tell, however, that she was emotionally somewhat fragile. She would do really well, in my opinion, as the youngest or only child (or in a family where the other children are grown).   She really needs an experienced adoptive family who can give her lots of one on one attention and help build her trust in humanity back”.

Lizzie is a beautiful little girl who has learning needs. She goes to primary school and she is in a special needs class, which means she has a lot of one-on-one teaching and therapy time. She has had speech and language therapy classes for 8 months and she has learned so much! She can communicate through signs but she has loved the freedom that comes with being able to communicate what she wants.

Guardian AngelLizzie really enjoys listening to music and hearing nursery rhymes. Since she can see a little bit, she likes to be in the light and wave her hand back and forth in front of her face. She also likes to sit on the seesaw, and gets a big smile on her face as she goes up and down. Lizzie loves to cuddle and will give almost anyone a hug. She also loves where she can move around, such as jumping on the trampoline and playing with big exercise balls. Lizzie will need some extra care and therapy when she is in a family. Her learning needs are such that she should have speech and language therapy and one-on-one time with teachers who have experience with children with special needs.

Adam

AdamBoy, born 2004Adam
HIV, hydrocephalus

Listed: January 30, 2013

Adam is a sweet, easy to please little cuddle bug. He is very much like a cuddly, curious little toddler. When I first met him he did not seem interested in me at all, but as time went by he began to want affection, and would grab my hands if I stopped rubbing his head and put them back on his head.

One day I picked him up and from that moment on he wanted to spend most of my time there in my arms. When I arrived he’d jump up from his little wooden chair, and hurry over to me with his arms raised. If I didn’t pick him up fast enough he’d try to climb up into my arms using nearby chairs or beds, and he would not hesitate to grab items from my hands and set them down to free up my hands so I could hold him. He also began to cry whenever I left. He loves wind up toys and toys that vibrate, and would giggle happily and flap his hands to show how excited he was about them. His other favorite toys were a pony he enjoyed chewing on, any sort of car, and some legos that made a train. He is not verbal but was beginning to make noises to communicate. I tried to teach him to sign more one day, by signing hand over hand with him. When I asked him to sign it he took my hands and helped me sign it. He seems to me to have a need for love and affection that can only come from a loving family. I would love to see him thriving and meeting his full potential, as well as bringing joy to as many people as possible!

Jory

Jory bikeJoryBoy, born July 2006
PRC
Spina Bifida (postoperative meningocele), postoperative right club foot, postoperative hernia (and one leg shorter than the other)

Listed: July 8, 2013

Jory was found abandoned beside the road at the age of 3 months. He has had corrective surgery to treat tethered spinal cord syndrome, meningocele and congenital cleft spine as well as right cross/club foot. He has normal intelligence. He likes to listen to music and sing. He likes playing with trucks, cars, and balls. His right leg is slightly shorter, but does not seem to impact him. He can walk, run, jump, and go up and down stairs well. He is currently in kindergarten and is doing well. He is patiently waiting for his family to find him.

UPDATE June 2016:  Jory is developing very well in all areas. He is able to express his feelings through words and art forms, especially drawing. He is very talented in drawing, and it is all self-taught! His drawings are full of details and stories, and his choice of colors and lines are amazing! Like most other boys of his age, superheroes are often the theme of his drawings. He loves his group home and his friends. He is caring, and able to stand up for himself when necessary. Academically, he excels at school. He knows a lot of Chinese characters and is able to read books with a little assistance. He knows how to use a dictionary, and he says he wants to make friends with his dictionary. He is very active and full of energy, even though he has to stay in bed because of a broken leg. He is eager to be able to walk and jump again. He is very humorous, and he enjoys making others laugh. He loves singing so much that he would sing along all the way on the school bus, which is a 45 minute ride! He also likes legos. He is fascinated with how things are made and how they work.

Jory has been watching his foster siblings and his friends getting adopted one after another, and he often wonders what would happen to him and if anyone would “pick” him. He says if he gets adopted, he would like to have mom and dad who are kind to him, who would bring him Legos, just like the other parents who adopted his foster brothers. It is hard for him, or any other waiting child, to truly understand that unconditional love means you don’t have to make an effort to be loved, you don’t need to earn your adoption and forever family. It is our hope that he can have a family of his own who will love him, cherish him, enjoy him, and show him what true love means.”

In talking to them, it sounds like Jory would greatly benefit from a comprehensive Spina Bifida team to look at all his problems and take an integrated approach. He needs good and consistent PT as well as custom braces, which are things not available to him currently. While Jory is able to walk despite having one significantly shorter leg, it is not safe for him to do so again until he is adopted and has these services/devices. His shorter leg has decreased bone density, so he has broken the leg once, hip once, and dislocated the hip once by walking. These injuries required three major orthopedic surgeries, and he has been on bedrest much of the last three years. The only benefit to this is that he has had private tutoring and is actually ahead of his peers academically!

Jory desperately needs a family to adopt him and help him get the medical care he needs so that he can walk again like he wishes to!

Hunter, Forest and Ridge

30809005259_130809005814 30809010039

Hunter-001ForestRidge-001Brothers – they need to be adopted together!

They are said to be “very good boys”!

Listed: August 11, 2013

Hunter, The oldest, was born in March 2004:  Hyperkinetic disorders/Hyperkinetic conduct disorder; Nonorganic sleep disorder/Emotional sleep disorder; Benign intracranial hypertension; Other specified diseases of gallbladder; Flat foot

Hunter likes to eat a lot. He and his brother Forest have a lot of energy. He really likes to do arts and crafts and play games. Most of the time he has a very sweet disposition. He is very keen to interact with adults. That being said if an adult is too rough with him things will start to escalate. If an adult tries to swat at him or restrain him in someway he may attempt to bite. Hunter can speak pretty well but he can’t always communicate what’s going on with his emotions. Hunter responds best to strong male figures. An attentive dad is key to a positive adoption for him. He is in grade 4 here but he can’t read, write, do math, or anything like that right now. He is schooled by himself and school mostly consists of arts and crafts. He is not unintelligent but very delayed. He likes soccer. He would be great in an attentive family where he and his brothers will get much attention and where they will be by far the youngest children. I would adopt him myself if I could be as focused on him and his brothers as he needs a dad and mom to be and if we had the space for them along with our current 3. He enjoys picking fruit and cleaning in the orphanage. He is never been far from the orphanage and he is interested in coming to America. He has communicated that he really wants to come to America and really wants a papa.

Forest, the middle boy, was born in Aug 2006:
Mild mental delays; speech disorder

Forest likes to eat a lot. He does school the same way his brother Hunter does. He is considered to be in the second grade. Very sweet but also very active. Like his older brother, he needs to need a lot of attention to keep him from unintended harm. He likes to be outside. He has minor institutional self harming tendencies like scratching himself to leave marks. He does not do that a lot though. Forest loves to give hugs and kisses and hold hands with the adults.

Ridge, the youngest brother was born in Aug 2008
Stenosis of pulmonary artery; currently he does not require surgery. Tuberculin skin test – positive?

Ridge likes to clean. He was mopping the floor with an adult sized mop as I wrote this. He is a very small but sweet boy. He’s a very peaceful and charming child. He is not in school yet but he seems to be the most intellectual of his brothers. He will likely do better in school then his brothers when he gets the chance. He is so cute it is hard to imagine him spending another day without a family. When the boys orphanage shuts down Ridge will be separated from his brothers for several months because he is not old enough to go with his older brothers. I expect this will be a very traumatic time for him, so if a family could come for him as soon as possible that would be best. No family should hesitate to adopt these children as long as they are available to give the time and attention that these children deserve. If that is done the children will flourish.

Elijah

Elijah-2014Boy, born Feb 2006
Elijah Birth defect of central nervous system, hydrocephalus, mental delays, manifest deviation, cardipathy and protein-calorie deficiency

Listed: June 21, 2013

Elijah needs a family asap, because he needs constant care, and at the orphanage he doesn’t receive it. They fed him with wheat cream only and how he is feeling sick all the time, it’s hard to feed him, so that at orphanages he just remains hungry sometimes.

He can walk and likes music and playing with mobile phones.  He likes watching TV and doesn’t speak much.

Guardian AngelElijah really responds well to a male caregiver — he needs a Papa of his very own!
From a missionary who visited in August 2014:  ” A beautiful little boy. He is doing so much better, he loves to walk.  He needs someone to hold his hand as is too scared to walk alone just yet.  He still has some self harming behaviors and lets you know when he’s not happy!  But most of the time he is calm and has the cutest giggle. “

From someone who met him summer 2013:
Elijah is a beautiful, sweet child. He is nonverbal but he occasionally makes some noises. Unfortunately, when I saw him he had to be restrained most of the time because he would hit himself and bang his head … hard. He now has a one-on-one caregiver, and I hear he is doing very well. Elijah likes to watch tv, and he loves musical toys. When you play music for him, he just lights up in a huge smile. He has an infectious laugh. While I was visiting, Elijah had surgery to fix a malfunctioning shunt. I was able to visit him in the hospital. The dedication of the man who is now his personal caregiver was amazing. Elijah can walk with support, and he loves to be held and cuddled. This little blond-haired child looks like an angel, and he would bring nothing but joy to a family’s life.

Several videos of him are available from Maya’s Hope.

WillowWillow-001Girl, born January 2006
H-NMWillow

When Willow arrived, she did not want others to touch her or be near her. However, with some attention and one-on-one time with staff, she began to trust others. While she is unable to walk, she has responded well to therapy which has focused on developing leg strength. She also participates in water therapy weekly.

Willow arrived at this orphanage in early February 2013. She loves music and loves to dance. She has responded well to the pre-school program taught at the orphanage. She has a bright smile and a contagious laugh. When visitors come, Willow is delighted to swing with them or go on walks in the neighborhood.

From a missionary who visited with her in 2013: ” I’ve met Willow!  Seriously, this girl ALWAYS smiles. Whenever I would come near her she’d just grab my hand and grin at me. She wants to go exploring so bad, but she can’t walk. She would just point at stuff and grin at me to try to get me there.  She is a sweetie pie. my roommate got to feed her lunch one day. She is a happy little girl who went from being scared of others near her to loving the attention! “

Albinism

Listed: January 29, 2013

Andrew lives with a foster family since 2004, for his better development and he feels warm towards his family. His foster parents take good care of him, and he has become more and more active and bright. His vision problem which was resulted from albinism didn’t affect his daily life, his physical indexed are within normal range.

Andrew is a bright boy; sometimes he is shy in front of strangers, but he is joy for his parents at home. He often helps his mother do something within his power such as sweep the floor, wipe table, wash clothes etc. He is a good student at school, respect teachers, studies hard, help other classmates, has good word of mouth, often praised by teachers and classmates.

He is such a good boy, and we sincerely hope he could have a secure and happy family in which his parents love him very much.

Update 2014:  Andrew has mixed feelings about adoption. He would like to have his own forever family but his very best friend was recently placed in hers and he misses her … A LOT. He feels the emptiness in his own life that her adoption has left. When Andrew was asked how he felt about adoption, he immediately put his head down and sobbed, and sobbed and sobbed. His caregivers were able to explain the loss he feels about his dearest chum. Andrew shared with the team he would also like a chance to be adopted.

Quilliam

QuilliamBoy, born February 2004
PRC
postoperative intracranial hemorrhage

Listed: July 9, 2013

Quilliam was found under an overpass when he was 2 months old. He had 2 procedures before the age of 1 which left him with lowered function of his upper left arm. At the date of his last report he was 7 and was learning to ride a bike and taking saxophone and calligraphy lessons. His teachers say that he is a well behaved student who often gets small awards from his teachers. Quilliam gets along well with other students and likes to help.

He is an honest, outgoing, kindhearted child who loves to listen to stories on the radio and loves to share stories about his school day with his foster parents. Who wouldn’t enjoy having a son who actually tells you what he did at school instead of just saying “Nothing.”

Nash

Nash 2015Boy, born 2004

Hydrocephalus

Listed: August 20, 2013

July 2016: NASH HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE INSTITUTION :(

From a volunteer who visited with him in July 2014:  ” Nash is still this very small boy. He has the size of a pre schooler. He is really cute though. He loves to have a man around. He showed my boyfriend all around the place. He loves to blow little wind mills and play games together. He doesn’t really speak the language they speak in his country, but he does make all kinds of ‘words’. He actually tries to make you understand and every now and then there will be an actual word in it, which makes it easier to understand what he says. He is potty trained and he understands language and knows quite well how to read the body language of the nurses. He’s a big help for the nurses, he carries toys inside and pushes wheelchairs. We suspect that he has some kind of visual impairment. He had the glasses of my boyfriend on for a moment and he seemed to be able to see much more, but I’m no eye doctor, so I can’t say for sure. All I can say is that this boy desperately needs out. He is quite healthy and he needs a family where he can blossom. He is an amazing boy and I have tons of pictures and a couple videos of him, where he shows his own goofy self. So please don’t let this boy wait any longer. Many of his friends from the orphanage have been adopted, but he is still listed. I want him out there! I want someone to see his potential and love him all the way home!

From a family who met him in Dec 2013: He seemed to be rocking more persistently. I noticed when music was being played or when we would actively engage him play he would rock nervously. However, he is a wonderfully sweet spirited child and is eager to please. He would always great us with a formal, “hello” and then lead us to take a seat. He never missed an opprotunity to rush out of the groupa and jump in our laps or include himself in whatever game we were playing with our boys. He so desperately wants to be loved. He called me, “Mama” and it broke my heart…how I wish I could have taken this precious boy as well. There were many days that we noticed him strapped to a chair or straight jacketed; I am not sure why because I never saw any self injurious behavior from him. He is very impulsive and easily excited but his joy simply radiates a room. He desperately deserves to be loved, valued and wanted….he only aims to please. The first thought that came to mind upon meeting him was, “He does NOT belong here”….he is so smart…though his speech is often slurred; but only slightly. He seems to be minorly effected by his hydrocephaly and gets along very well. His poor little hands do shake though; probably as a result of the pressure on his brain. I am unsure if he has been shunted or not; I felt around his head one day and did not feel the bump that would indicate he has. If he has not been shunted then that makes his case even more urgent. He desperately needs out! This boy has ALL the potential in the world…he just needs the right parents to break him free!  I also have a video with him in it, if a family is interested.

From someone who met Nash in 2012:  Nash is a wonderful little boy. He is always quick to excitedly greet visitors with happy squeals and a formal hello, and is quite insistent visitors take a seat in the chair he brings over to them 🙂  He is very helpful and obedient, and will sometimes bring toys over to the smaller kids in his group who cannot get toys for themselves. He is very talkative, but a lot of what he says is sort of like “Nash”-ese. He has no problem getting his point across, however, if it is important to him that you understand him! He likes to play with just about any toy; balls, legos, cars, light up toys, you name it he will play with it. He enjoys being silly and laughing, and especially thrives with one on one attention. He is generally a happy little guy, but does not like messes or rule breaking, and is not afraid to tell the other children “No” or try to right their wrongs if they are misbehaving. He very much aims to please! I feel Nash would adjust easily to and thrive in a family!

HIV, strabismus, congenital cataract (blind in right eye)
Mild to moderate mental delays, FAS, tuberculosis of the lymph nodes

Listed: October 21, 2012

Update March 2013:

Jeanette was exposed to alcohol prenatally.  She has issues with impulsivity/understanding consequences.   She is well-liked where she is, but needs additional support to succeed in school.  It’s recommended that Jeanette would do great with older children whom could help correct her behavior and could model appropriate behavioral for her.

She is very sweet and loves to draw, and color.  She pays great attention to detail in her drawings and when she is doing something she like to do like drawing she can sit still for a very long time doing it. She is also very funny and dramatic. She loves to act and dance and sing and make goofy faces and act silly to make people laugh. She could do well in a family but they would need to be prepared for FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).

Devora

Mental delay, HIV

Listed: March 4, 2013

Creative, eager

Devora is a real sweetie pie! She loves to have her head rubbed, and enjoys being tickled. Her smiles and giggles are absolutely heart melting! She does not talk, stand, or walk as far as I could tell. Her idea of mischief is to kick off a shoe or hide her arm inside of her sweatshirt, and she’d giggle as these things were corrected.

She seemed to find it very amusing when I would ask her where her hand was, then say “There it is” as I removed it from inside of her shirt. This became a game, and she would giggle as she hid her arm again as soon as I removed it from inside of her shirt. She is a very content little girl, and something as simple as a spiky ball could put a big grin on her face. I never saw her upset as long as she was allowed to play in either her bed or her chair, but she would become upset if I tried to move her to a more unfamiliar area to play.

Elinor, Devora, Isolde, Julia,  Sullivan, Artemur, Duane, Abner and Irina may all be in the same region.

Liam

Liam 2014 (2)Boy, born March 2006

Cerebral Palsy, significant mental delays

Listed: August 13, 2012

Not a great picture, but Liam is a cutie!   Even though he has CP, it’s nice to see him in a place that has him up and about.
Large families welcome, married couples only.
From a family who met him in 2014: This little guy tried for 5 minutes to get my attention before I could come over to him. Although he is mostly nonverbal, his receptive language is good, and he was able to follow instructions and respond to our conversation. I asked what he could do physically, and he immediately began pushing the cover back and trying to flip over, to show me he could roll, and pull up on the side of the bed. He is very sweet, and so very much wants OUT of the bed and to be up walking, but without proper medical intervention and regular therapy, he won’t be able to. His outgoing, sunny personality is absolutely wonderful! His biological mother died 4 years ago, and he entered the orphanage then, so he had that solid foundation of a loving mom during the important years. From a CP perspective- all four limbs are involved, and he has high tone in his torso that makes it difficult for him to sit up, because when he gets excited, his tone kicks in and it flattens him back out. He also has significant spasticity in his legs, particularly in his heel cords and hamstrings. That is something that in the USA might be treated with a medicine like Baclofen, which would allow him more flexibility. He’s very affectionate and easygoing, and constantly tries to get up and move around like the other kids. He just really needs a family to help him reach his potential!

Listed: August 13, 2012

What a sweet little girl!  She is walking independently. Married couples only, large families welcome!

Update June 2013:
Don’t let Cambria’s pictures fool you. She is happy and full of life. Usually, she is stuck in bed for her own safety, as the nannies are afraid she could fall or run into something and hurt herself. When I took her out, she was able to walk, run, and dance to the music playing on the TV in the room. She loves dancing! She started laughing when I clapped my hands in front of her face and when I sneezed. She is an absolutely angelic little girl. While I do believe she has some institutional autism, she would be a joy in any family, and with love and proper care will thrive.

Update March 2014:
Although she mostly lays around because she cannot see, she walks and dances; she loves music. She is extremely gentle, and sensitive to noises.  She loves to be swung around and rocked gently, and that also makes her giggle.

Cerebral Palsy, congenital heart disease

Listed:  September 29, 2012

Daisy was already 2 years old at the time of her arrival to the institute. She could neither walk nor speak at the time. She was also very skinny with a large head. Following an initial physical examination, it was found she had a congenital heart disease. She had lackluster complexion and dull eyes. The caretakers thought it was a miracle that she would survive. She has a strong will to live and has a healthy appetite. She eats three meals a day and is not a picky eater.

After a period of care, she slowly gained weight and colored returned to her complexion. Even more encouraging is that she began to speak. She will call the caretaker often, which made the caretakers very happy. She took her first step in May 2009 and surprised everyone when she started walking. Most fortunately is in all this time she has been in our institute, her heart disease has never surfaced. She has been living happily.

Julia

2015

julia-2016Girl, born 2002

FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome), probable secondary CP

Julia has such happy, giant brown eyes and a smile that lights up a room!

Listed:  January 13, 2013

Update from August 2016:  Last year Julia got operated on, on her feet. This year she is walking like a queen! She gets therapy where she learns to walk in a straight line, jump, etc. It was amazing to see what she was capable of. She was talking a lot this year. It’s very hard to understand her, even if you speak the language, but the girls that she has been in a group with for many years understand her completely and are capable of having conversations together. She loves to go on the swing, she hates to get off again. 😉

It is hard to tell what she does and doesn’t understand. She hardly responded to any question that was asked. She only answered question about whether or not she wanted to walk around the building, go on the swing, play with the ball. It was hard to tell if she wasn’t interested in answering other questions or that she didn’t understand the other questions or didn’t know the answer.

This year she showed less harming behaviors, but they were not totally gone. See does bite herself or other smaller children around her sometimes. There doesn’t seem to be a specific reason for it. It happens on random moments. But she is totally not an aggressive girl, she is so cheerful and enthusiastic. She has been a hero in her rehab therapy. It makes me think that she can achieve a lot if she gets the chance and sets her mind to it. I would really look forward to see how she’d thrive in a family!

UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 2015: “Julia is a very enthusiastic girl. I don’t know how else I should put it in words. Meeting Julia is an experience. She is one blast of fun and energy and happiness. When I met Julia I called her my little monkey, because as soon as your within reach, she will grab you (whereever she can) and she will climb on you. And she will hold on so tight that you don’t even have to hold her. She won’t fall. She is really strong. She loves to be hold This spring Julia got operated on her feet. Before her feet were shaped like how ballerinas hold their feet while dancing. This summer she was wearing casts and one of our last days the casts were taken off and her feet are straight. Even with the casts she was already walking on her own, without the casts she did the same. Walking was very hard for her before the operation. She could amaze me sometimes by getting up and walking a couple steps to reach something she really wanted, but now she was really capable of walking, not just a couple steps. She is still in a wheelchair most of the time though. Julia is potty trained and will tell if she has to use it. She can dress (or at least undress) herself. She can play accurate with toys, like dolls, or pretend play with kitchen tools. She also tries to brush hair and put a band in it. She is really careful when she does that. She can drink from a cup and eat by herself. Julia can say some words, she doesn’t speak in sentences. She understands what is being said to her. Julia is pretty social if you compare her to many of the other children in her group. She is willing to share toys sometimes. She likes to show you around and show you beautiful things, like flowers. She has a hard time sharing personal attention though. She just wants someone for her own. Someone that she doesn’t have to share. She wants someone who has time for her, sees her, likes her. And it’s not hard to like her. With her big smile, her beaming eyes and her loving hugs it’s easy to fall in love with this girl. Last year we think she was sedated many days that we were there. She would hardly respond to anything. She would only hold my hand, but she wouldn’t even try to hold it when I walked away. We expect that they sedated her because she is such an energetic girl and there was a lack of staff last year. This year we didn’t see that anymore. Things are better in her facility than last year. She will most likely also get some kind of physical therapy now that her casts are taken off. I’ve seen some self-harming behaviors in Julia. Sometimes she bites herself or pinches herself. She can do this so badly that she starts to bleed. She can also bite and pinch others when she is upset. This is not regular behavior for her, but I’ve seen it happen. Julia is a loving girl who desperately needs a family. She has a sweet character with a lot of fire in her spirit as well. She needs someone to get her out there, before she loses the fire in her eyes.”

From a volunteer who visited with her in July 2014:  “I know Julia as a big Drama Queen. She loves attention and she’ll do anything to draw your attention. But not this year. I don’t know if she was on heavier sedatives or that she lost her strength to fight for attention. The only thing she’d do was take my hand as I walked by. Normally she’d wheel after me and try to climb on me, but it seems like there was no strength left. I missed my Julia as I know her, my little monkey. I want her to find back her energy to get out of life what’s in there. She’s an amazing girl and she deserves a loving family. She Always has a big smile on her face and she’s really caring. She takes care of dolls as if they are real babies. She feeds them, changes their diapers. She loves to play with my hair and she actually tries to put the band in it. She is amazing! She would be such a good daughter! “

From someone who met her:   Julia is a girl that I know as the girl with the big smile.  Somehow she just seem to smile almost always. She’s a little monkey. Whenever somebody enters her group she would crawl up to that person and just start to climb on him/her. She doesn’t even need you to give her a hand, she’ll just climb up without any help and then she hangs on your neck, looking around, proud, as if she wants to say ‘Did you see that? Do you see where I am?’

Guardian AngelHer favorite toy is a doll. She plays with it as if it is a baby. Keeping the doll up straight, putting her down carefully. She feeds and clothes the doll. One of the nurses showed her how she should put a cotton diaper on the doll, she totally loved it. She even sings lullabies for the doll and she’ll ask visitors to do the same. She also loves to play with long hair. She really tries to make ponytails or braids.

Julia is able to walk, but her legs are really crooked, and she needs help to keep standing or to walk.  Julia is described as curious and enthusiastic.

Jessica

Girl, born July 2004

cerebral palsy

Listed: September 29, 2012

Jessica is a shy and sensitive little girl. She is also timid.

Jessica was abandoned by her parents in front of our institute in 2005 due to her cerebral palsy. At the time, her complexion was dark and she was skinny. She could neither walk nor talk. In the institute, she is a very good girl who did not cry without reason. We all treasure her. When she interacts with other children, she likes to hold hands with them and touch their faces. Most interestingly, she takes very good care of her toys as they are always the cleanest and complete after she plays with them. For all of this, she is constantly praised by our caretakers.

Because of her cerebral palsy, Jessica has limitations in movement and speech. She received rehabilitation treatment in the institute for a period of time. From July 2011, she received rehabilitation treatment  for half a year. Currently, she can walk slowly when holding onto something. She can also say some simple words. For example, she can say the names of all the children in the institute. Because she is timid, she cannot walk freely for fear of falling. She’s afraid to step forward and would sometimes just sit on the floor. We would tell her encouraging words everyday, for Jessica is a child in need of much encouragement.

Justin does not always go to school because of blood transfusions.  He is behind in each aspect compared to other children. Now he can go up and down stairs, can jump off the ground, can draw lines with holding pen, can draw circle, likes painting; knows “big and small”, “inside and outside”, “more and less” and “left and right”; recognize color of “red, yellow, blue, green, white and black”.  He can count from 1 to 10, but does not know number because of not receiving regular education.

His general language ability – he is talkative and can communicate simply, like telling you where he goes but not clearly. At the aspect of self-management, he can eat alone, can go to the toilet, can put on and off the clothes and socks. He also is a good helper, likes helping the caretaker do things like fetching things, helping the younger children.

Brody and Auggie

Brody (on the left) born April 2006-FAS

Auggie (on the right) born March 2005
Rough mental delay, partial atrophy of eye nerves, cerebral palsy, Epilepsy-FAS

Listed: May 6, 2011
From someone who met Brody in 2011 and Auggie in 2012:  Brody and Auggie are sweet little boys who appear to have some sort of genetic disorder that causes developmental delays and self-harming behaviors. They are not aggressive towards others, only towards themselves, and these behaviors can be halted temporarily by picking either boy up and spinning him around. Brody is able to walk, and can drink from a cup without help. He is not quite able to feed himself, but is willing to try. Auggie was in a laying room for over a year, but after only 3 months of physical therapy is now sitting independently and working on learning to stand. Both boys have wonderful, heart stealing smiles. Brody appears to be in his own world much of the time, and loves things that crinkle or light up, and things shaped like sticks, as well as hands, gloves, feet and socks. He shows numerous signs of autism, which may or may not be environmental. Auggie loves things that crinkle or light up, slinkies, music, and tv. He is more interactive than Brody, and appears to lift his arms up to indicate he would like to be held. This is the only form of communication I observed from either of the boys. The boys are currently living in separate orphanages. I pray a family will reunite these brothers together in one family, where they can receive all the love and attention they need to meet their full potential!

We hope a family will consider adopting them TOGETHER.

NEW PHOTO MAY 2016:  Janie has been transferred.
She will remain bedridden and restrained for the rest of her life is she is not adopted.  Janie is a beautiful little girl who struggles with the effects of FAS.    She also has CP and some effects of hydrocephaly.   She is not able to walk on her own, and will need the loving and patient care of a family to help her achieve her potential.

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.

Janie may be available with Nate and Jared.

Noel

Guardian AngelGirl, Born October 2004

Oh, Noel!   Noel was born with hydrocephaly and severe CP.   She has had surgery and has a shunt for her hydrocephalus, but she is still just “existing” for right now.  She is blessed to still be at the baby house….the director can’t bear to send her on.

Listed: February 21, 2011

There is no way to know her potential until she is out of an orphanage and in her own family setting.  She will likely require 24 hour care.   But she deserves a family of her own!

Because of her severe special needs, any family considering a commitment for Noel should have experience caring for a child with these significant needs.

NEW PHOTO DECEMBER 2016!    What a blessing to finally have a new photo of her.  She looks well, and in a decent orphanage.  She has waited TOO LONG for a family!  Would any family take a leap of blind faith to save her?  She will remain bedridden the rest of her short life if not.

Wendy is a beautiful girl with sandy blonde hair and blue eyes.    She was born quite premature  (not sure which gestational week, but it is listed as “4th stage”).  She has CP and is completely blind, with congenital cataracts in both eyes, optic sub-atrophy, and microcephaly.

From her medical records:  Microcephaly, tetraparesis, delayed psychomotor development due to perinatal CNS lesions.  Congenital malformations of eye, cataracts, microphthalmia of both eyes.

An experienced adoptive family of institutionalized children is preferred.  Married couples only.  Older parents and large families welcome.

Matvey is such a cute little boy, with blonde curls!   He is cognitively delayed, but does not seem to have any official diagnosis other than that.  He has amazing potential!!   He was transferred to another region in 2010.

Please give this little guy a chance to fulfill his potential!    One of our own adoptive families who visited with him in March 2008 shared this with us:  “This little guy did NOT want to be photographed!  He was quite happy doing whatever he was doing before being brought into the room but having his picture taken was not high on his priority list.  He has “deep mental delay” (understand that this is according to Eastern European standards — he was more aware and alert than a child with Down syndrome might be at the same age).  I can’t tell you his eye color because he down-right refused to look at me, but those blonde curls sure were cute!”

Russ’s profile says “goloproentsephaliy” which is unclear, other than there’s some condition with his brain.  It’s unclear if it’s a physical or mental condition.

It has been suggested that his ‘goloproentsephaliy’ may actually be holoprosencephaly like Catherine 9HA, but it would be a milder form than hers i.e. lobar or semi-lobar holoprosencephaly, rather than alobar.
