Aaron

aaronaaron-2015Boy, born 2003
CP

Listed: August 4, 2010

Aaron was also previously listed as “Anderson”.

From a family who has met him many times:
This boy is absolutely exploding with energy. He’s really unsteady on his feet so he’s constantly roaming the halls half-running/half-falling. He loves to touch and craves physical contact. Sometimes we can get a glorious moment of quiet when he will just let us hold him and wrap our arms around him. He really does love that and it does wonders for his brain development. It’s just a matter of getting him still enough to realize he likes it!

He loves any kind of sensory play, like feeling the dirt outside and holding his hand under a running faucet. He likes to sit in a wheelchair and be pushed around, even though he doesn’t need a wheelchair! The best thing we can do for him is take him on walks. He likes to be outside so sometimes we just get him outside and follow wherever he leads. He doesn’t have any words, but when he gets excited he gives his signature shriek to let us know he’s excited. He needs a family who can provide him with a lot of structure. Right now he is constantly seeking sensory input, and getting into a lot of trouble doing that. We believe he would thrive within the structure and love of a family.

Max

Maxmax-updateBoy, born 2009

congenital heart disease, ventricular septal defect in the phase of closure, nebtal delay, nanism

Probable FAS (cautionary disclosure….facial features and other medical complications consistent with this condition).

Update from a family who met him in April 2016:
The director was encouraging us to consider (Max) for adoption too and really wants to see him in a family. He was transferred into the institution with our son. He was very small for his age, (maybe the size of an American 3 year old) and very active. He reminded me of a small chipmunk because he kept running around the director’s office and poking his nose into everything!!! He was SO curious! I saw him get cookies off the director’s table and he was able to chew and swallow, without difficulty, though he does tend to overload his mouth. (maybe he is afraid they will take the food away?) He drinks normally from a cup.

He understood speech addressed to him and appropriately made the correct animal sound when asked what the dog, cow, etc says. He also knew placement of his body parts. (Eyes, ears…) I did not observe him speak except for animal sounds but gestured appropriately when he needed his needs met.

He does tend to ignore redirection, but does it with a mischievous gleam in his eye and, due to him responding appropriately to questions, there is no doubt in my mind he understands, just doesn’t want to listen! After all, the director’s large office was a fun, new place to explore!

I saw him swinging in a swing and he seems fine physically. His movement (walking and running) is very good. He is not overly affectionate but tolerates affection well. (Director was lifting him/giving him hugs)

This is a nice institution to adopt from. It is an easy walk from the hotel and the hotel director speaks English and is very welcoming and accommodating to American guests. They will overfeed you!  There are many shops, parks, and markets within easy walking distance of the hotel and institution.  Unfortunately, at this institution, the disabled adult men are lumped in with the little boys. Max needs out now! He has amazing potential with a family!

Betsy

guardianangelbetsy-2016betsy-2016Girl, born late 2002
Slight mental delay, simple astigmatism

Listed: March 1, 2015

From a family who met her in 2014:  This young lady is very sweet! She is in school and just finished the 3rd level. Betsy likes to color, read, run, swing on the playground, and dance. When we were able to talk to her she seemed slightly shy but very calm and gentle. Betsy is articulate and seems only slightly delayed. She and my daughter hugged and cried when they had to say good-bye. Betsy really wants to come to America. She would be a wonderful addition to any family! I would love to share more with seriously interested families.

Update November 2016:  Here is a beautiful young lady who wants a family very badly. Betsy just turned 14 years old. She is fun, rather shy, very sweet, immature emotionally (more like an 8-10yo), physically affectionate, with some mild mental delays, has severe astigmatism that made her nearly blind (but since corrected with strong glasses). She was hosted this summer by a family in TX. We visited Betsy for 6 days while she was here. Betsy confided in our daughter that she did not want to go back to her country at all and wanted to stay here in America with a mama and papa and brothers and sisters. Betsy cried at the thought of going back to her internat (boarding school for orphans).

Yes, adopting Betsy would be adopting an older child. Yes, it comes with different expectations than adopting an infant. Yes, I’ve been there done that and would be more than happy to share the ups and downs of adopting an older child. Yes, I would adopt Betsy in a heartbeat if our house wasn’t already full.

Please, DO NOT turn away from Betsy. Please, pray about adopting her.

I KNOW what kind of internat she comes from…it’s NOT a good place. Betsy does have a few teachers who do care somewhat for these children. She does receive some schooling. Betsy needs out!

Brock enjoys dancing in school productions, doing school work on the computer, shooting hoops, playing soccer, reading books, painting and cutting out art projects, and sliding down slides. He is one of my daughter’s really good friends. They hugged and cried when my daughter left the orphanage. Brock desperately needs a family to rescue him and give him a joyful life full of love.

Brandi

Guardian Angelbrandi-2016Girl, Born August 2007
brain malformations, bilateral hearing loss, significant cognitive delays, heart condition strabismus, anemia

NEW PHOTO!!   Brandi is a beautiful 9 year old girl. She is listed with bilateral hearing loss, but can definitely hear, as she will turn around and look for the person calling her name, and does respond to commands given if she chooses (if she doesn’t, she screams/attempts to run/swats at the caregiver). Cognitively, she is very delayed, more like a toddler, in ability to understand what’s going on around her, and in her responses, and appropriateness. She also has strabismus in both eyes, and has both a heart condition and anemia. She does NOT have CP, nor microcephaly. She does have brain malformations, significant developmental delays, and many stimming behaviors that are typical of lower functioning autism. She is completely nonverbal.brandidatabase-1

Families interested in Brandi should be aware that she appears to have autism, and that it impacts her significantly. She is a “runner” and will bolt and run unless contained or restrained and potential families need to be aware that this is common in autism, and that they will need to take appropriate measures to keep her safe in a home and family. She has a history of aggression when changes occur, such as a move, or unexpected event, which include biting peers and adults, and she struggled for at least a year after her last orphanage change four years ago, but is doing better now. However, as many with autism thrive on routine and predictability, families need to be aware that she may handle a transition poorly, especially at first. She has excellent mobility, and is very typically sized for a normal 7 year old in weight and height, and when she resists, it is challenging for a grown woman to hold her back. She has been in a school for the deaf, however, she knows no sign language nor does she read lips. She is very much in her own world in many ways. She enjoys music and will sometimes clap, but remains disconnected from the group and does not interact with adults (was not seen with peers).

Brandi attempts to smell/lick everything that is handed to her and when she realizes it isn’t food, she is not typically interested. The nannies report that she has an excellent appetite, and that she enjoys eating. She stims by rocking, throwing herself back and forth, sucking all four fingers on her hand, grunting, and moaning/shrieking. She walks with a lurching gallop. She flaps her hands often. A potential family should be aware that she has no awareness of danger, no fear of strangers and is very much like a very young child emotionally and cognitively, but physically is strong and very mobile. She currently takes psychiatric medications to assist in sleep and behavior.

She is a lovely little girl, with beautiful blond hair and clear complexion. She is in a good orphanage where she is well cared for. Families need to research autism, and be comfortable and familiar with caring safely for a child with the issues mentioned above, in order to provide Brandi with a safe, loving home.

Kippy is a handsome, active boy! He came into care as an infant, and was found to have an infection of his left eye when he was small. The infection did not resolve, and resulted in the loss of his left eye in 2012. A prosthetic was inserted after surgery. He healed well, and has had no further complications. His right eye was never involved. Kippy is a normal, healthy, active, and fun boy! He attends school and enjoys learning. Kippy’s development has always been on target. He gets along very well with the other kids, and loves the adults at the orphanage. Kippy and the other kids were invited to a Christmas party at the Marriott. Kippy made gingerbread and was praised by the baker of the hotel! He was a very happy and proud boy! Kippy is healthy, a bright boy, and is very eager to have a family of his own.

Diagnoses: deep mental delay. Cerebral paralysis- double spastic form, microcephaly. Strabismus, divergent squint, and Optic atrophy. First degree anemia.

Listed: October 4, 2012

Sweet little Shayla could tremendously use a family and medical attention to help her thrive. She has already been living in this orphanage for 3 years and risks soon having to be transferred to a place where adoption will be next to impossible.

Her speech is not well developed, she holds toys in her hands for brief periods of time (but she sure does love to hold stuffed animals!), she has a reaction when you say her name but she is not able to communicate back but she smiles. She walks with support- can”t walk independently. Children in this orphanage need families! They do not receive enough interaction/therapy to help them thrive. They are seen as hopeless but we know that is not true!

Update June 2013:
This is not a great picture [on the right] but she would NOT sit still. She was wanting to move!! She thought it was so funny and would not stop laughing and rocking back and forth about the camera. The nannys also were laughing with her- her laugh and happiness is very infectious.

Lauren says “HI Mama!!  I’m here waiting for you!”  (in this photo she is riding a rocking horse!)

Lauren is a super-sweet and active little girl.  She is very social and affectionate, and will do well in a family setting.

As with all children living in these difficult conditions,  this child’s cognitive development has regressed significantly since he/she was younger.  It is of crucial importance that any family considering the adoption of an older child from the mental institution setting be well prepared for what to expect with regards to how the neglect and lack of adequate medical care and nourishment has affected this child.    These children all have TREMENDOUS potential for improvement, and deserve to have a life outside these four walls.

Delta

Delta-002Girl, born 2003
Mild to moderate delays, left eye condition

Listed: October 29, 2012

Update July 2017:

She has moderate mental retardation (NOT just psychological and speech delay!). It is organic damage of brain. She is not at school, defectologists teach her something, but her level of development does not stipulate for “traditional” education. She is taught by program developed for special needs children with mental issues, so it is very primitive.

Delta is almost blind. She has a slight right eyesight. She has been diagnosed with congenital anophthalmos.  Also she is hearing-impaired, and currently she uses hearing device, which is helpful.

Her personality is kind and friendly.

Update June 2013:
Look at Delta- isn’t she beautiful?! She is SO, SO sweet- we gave the kids lollipops and she grabbed my hand and squeezed it and said thank you. She is very “with it”- the kids danced for me and she was one of the very few that was on beat! She is able to follow directions and imitate. Chrystyna

Guardian Angelchrystyna2015-croppedGirl, Born January 2002

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Listed: August 7, 2010

Chrystyna is a beautiful, brown haired, brown eyed girl who deserves a chance at a better life!  Her official orphanage papers say she has developmental delays/difficulties from birth, but nothing more specific than that.  It is possible she has FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome).  Her biological mother  was deprived her parental rights in December 2004, and the biological father is not known.  Chrystyna has so much potential, and will be a precious gift to any family who adopts her.

Chrystyna is already living in an institution, so we need a family for her right away!

UPDATE:  God has been watching Chrystyna.  She was recently transferred out of the institution into a wonderful facility, where they teach these children, work with them, and they appear very well cared for.  The difference in the few girls who were transferred OUT of the institution is incredible!   Please give these girls a second chance for a loving family!

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.

From a family who met her, Sept 2012:
She is getting settled into her new environment. She seems to be very comfortable in her groupa. She is very beautiful and still has a lot of potential.  She deserves a chance!

From someone who met her, June 2013:
During the music performance, she was constantly stimming really fast (like it looks like she is being fast forwarded) and after they finished she was taken out by a nanny. Not sure what is going on with her;  If interested families want to see the videos they are welcome to! I know a family tried to take pictures of her last year but couldn’t get a good one because she moved so much!

Update June 2013:
This girl is a dancer! She does not let her CP stop her and she was up and dancing up and down to the music. She is mobile and does walk unassisted but poor thing desperately needs PT and is not receiving it. Her legs do not go straight

Mike

Mike (2) Mike (1)Boy, born August 2005
PRC
Post-op cerebral palsy

Listed: January 12, 2015

Mike is an extroverted and mischievous child. He is very intelligent and studious. He gets along well with other children and likes outdoor activities. Mike takes pleasure in showing off his abilities. He does not do well in wet or humid climates as he breaks out in hives. He is also afraid of snakes. Mike has lived in a foster family, and made great progress while living there. He went through rehabilitation for his cerebral palsy and while his walking isn’t steady, his daily activities are not affected. He is able to take care of himself. We hope Mike finds his forever family!

Update from his host family: Mike likes to eat just about anything and everything, and in large amounts. He likes to play Uno Attack, and likes to ride a bike when the weather permits. He also enjoys going to help his host dad with the pigs on the farm. Mike likes hugs, and gives and receives them. The host family enjoys singing, and he seems to like it too; he has learned some songs and is always trying to sing along with them. The host family believes Mike will do best in a family that is ready to be very firm, structured, and consistent with him. He has a heart that desires to be loved like every child. The host family is very willing to try and meet up with a family if someone wants to meet him.

Luciana

girlsillouettenophotoGirl, 8 years old
M50
Physiologically healthy, Learning and language difficulties, Child abuse syndrome, Intellectual disability

Initially was diagnosed with moderate mental delays and an inferior IQ, diagnostic was modified for mild mental retardation and finally after psychological reevaluation her IQ is determined to be normal. Mental examination shows a calm and inexpressive child, staring off into space that shows indifference and only speaks when I ask her something, assures to be euthymic even though her appearance seems to be of sadness. Some level of cognition deficit, I have to repeat questions, she writes her name but unable to make her to read some words, can’t add 2+2, low tone of voice, monotone, without any inflection, her thought seems coherent, concrete, limited to isolated words and short phrases, good sleep habits, poor appetite, thin physical constitution, remembers “papa me pegaba” (my father used to hit me), there is no suicidal ideas but “ cansada de la vida” (tired of life), she isolates herself “solo tengo una amiguita” (I only have one little friend), no anxiety data. When child arrived to institution her caretaker described her as aggressive, hyperactive and complaints about misbehaving at school. Currently auto-sufficient to get dress, hygiene needs, eating moving from one place to another. The report card shows that she is inhibited, affectionate, fast learner, likes to participate in activities. Psychology report from 2013 reports no behavioral problems, calm, received therapy and attends to elementary school.

Pablo doesn’t show signs of recent or past of physical abuse. Echo-cardiogram and electrocardiogram performed showed ebstein anomaly (Horner Syndrome), moderated apical interventricular communication. Doesn’t require surgical treatment based on electrocardiogram results. Requires biannual follow up with both echo-cardiogram and electrocardiogram. It is possible that as an adult he will probably require tricuspid valve replacement.

Elinor

Elinorelinor-2016Girl, born 2009
Mental delay, probably FAS

Listed: Dec 31, 2014

From a volunteer who knows her in August 2016:  “Elinor is a sweet little girl who craves attention. Elinor is non verbal and she hardly makes sounds at all. She seems to understand everything that is being said to her. She reacts strongly on body language as well. She shies away from people that have negative/aggressive body language and she comes closer to people with positive/loving body language. Elinor is the smallest child in the group. She spends most of the time sitting on the ground or a chair, not really doing anything. She does not play with toys that are offered to her. She loves to sit on someones lap and it makes her calm when someone sings to her. She would take every chance to cuddle. The nurses said that if she had a chance to be cuddled all day, that she would. Elinor does have some protective behaviors. When she feels threatened she will bite people. It will not stop until that person creates space between them. If she is still upset them, she will continue to bite herself. She does not purposely harm others and she doesn’t seem to bite any of the other children, only adults. Because she is the smallest child of the group, she is an easy target for the aggressive behaviors of the other children.  Elinor seems to be potty trained, she knows how to eat and drink by herself. She also knows perfectly how to navigate a smartphone an play easy games on it or swipe through pictures. She loves all electronic deviced, such as phones, cameras, etc.”

Elinor, Devora, Isolde, Julia,  Sullivan, Artemur, Duane, Abner and Irina may all be in the same region.

Cleft lip/palate, Hepatitis B

Listed: November 4, 2014

In June, 2009, he had his palate repaired. On admission he can’t speak clearly; others can understand what he says with listening carefully. His language development is normal, and he can express his thoughts. After surgery he is improved in pronouncing, much clearer than before. Usually the teacher correct his pronunciation, encourage him to more speaking and more communication.

He is fairly extroverted; he likes any interested things, including all kinds of toys and games. Once he is interested in it, he would be seriously involved it. He is closest to the persons who care him; for example, when having a class, he will embrace the teacher on his own initiative, as well as say “good morning”. Sometimes when taking part in the activities, he will ask the teacher to sit beside him and rest.

Kollen #58-11

KollenBoy, Age: 3
Diagnosis: Cerebral Palsy- mixed form (impacts his legs); delays in development

Kollen has started taking independent steps. He also crawls, sits, pulls up to a standing position holding on to a support, stays up for a short time without support, and walks holding on to two hands. His fine motor skills are improving. He fits in 3 cups, winds and unwinds toys on screws, “reads” books. He plays well with toys and explores their functions, imitates activities demonstrated to him, knocks on door before going in, claps his hands, stamps his feet, shows where his belly is. He eats with a spoon and attempts to do it independently. He is a calm and quiet child, makes a good eye contact, smiles, delights in interaction, recognizes and differentiates between the adults, has an emotional bond to a caregiver that works 1:1 with him. He pronounces sounds and syllables and currently says 3 words. He also used gestures to communicate his wants and needs.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, he will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for him.

Alaric #25-15

Alaric 2015 (1) Alaric 2015 (2)Boy, born 2009
Down syndrome
Alaric has delays in psycho-motor development. Senses(sight, hearing) are preserved.

Listed: June 10, 2014

UPDATE early 2015:
Alaric was moved to a family style group home 6 months ago and has made significant progress in this new setting. He is now receiving more personalized attention from staff. While Alaric is still not walking, the director believes that this is due simply to his stubborn insistence to crawl, as he can walk while holding on to one hand of a caregiver. To help him become more independent, the staff introduced a wheelchair and Alaric has learned to maneuver the wheelchair to get where he wants to go. A physical therapist will begin intensive work on teaching him to walk in the coming months.
The staff reports that Alaric has become more expressive and confident since moving into the group home. They are working with him on learning self-help skills such as feeding himself and dressing himself.

Photos and videos from Feb 2015 are available through the agency.

Update Sept 2015
He is extremely energetic child, constantly in motion, keeping his attention on something for a short time. When he has some purpose, he is able to walk a long distance lead by hands to reach his goal. If he was sitting on the ground and nearby there was a support – he succeeded standing up without other’s help. If there was some distance to his goal – then he was crawling to the support (the wall in our case), after which leaning on the wall with his hands, he alone was reaching the desired object.

As to the food, having in mind his diagnose – Down syndrome and related with its physiological characteristics, he is chewing and swallowing with difficulty. Therefore he still accepts blended food – five times daily. He is fed by the staff but usually they “encourage” him to eat alone, holding his hand and bringing the food to his mouth. He drinks liquids with a spoon or with syringe. When served with a cup, he can hold it, but does not bring it to his mouth. He is usually biting the feeding/nursing-bottle. Otherwise, he eats/finishes everything, even very often when he is done with his food, he snivels.

Multiple congenital malformations, condition similar to CP.

January 2017:  Easton has been institutionalized.  He is hungry, retrained, and miserable.  Please help us find his family!

Easton smiles, reacts to familiar adults, toys.  Look at that gorgeous smile — are those dimples?

From a family who met him in March 2014:

Easton is an incredibly cheerful little boy. The nannies told us that he is smart and talks with them, though we were also told that he is delayed. In fairness, Easton spends almost all of his time in a crib. He would either be sitting or laying when we saw him.

Easton always seemed to be very aware of what was happening around him. One day when a nanny was getting our son ready for his visit, we did a little dance behind her and Easton laughed. He would often smile brighter when we would wave at him across the room while picking up our son on our visits. I believe Easton would flourish in his own family.

Tessa (Lora)

Guardian AngelGirl, born August 2008

We were recently informed LORA is actually Tessa!

What a little doll Tessa is!  She really needs a family — she has a whole host of medical issues.

Mental delay, rickets, strabismus (crossed eyes), epilepsy, and a speech delay. She does not talk at all.  She prefers to be alone.  Some of her behaviors remind autism but she was not diagnosed with it.  Her epilepsy is well controlled by medications.  It has been suggested that Tessa may have Angelman Syndrome, but this is not confirmed.

She is able to stand and walk independently. She does not have a diagnosis of CP but she walks unsteadily.   She was previously diagnosed with microcephaly.

She deserves a loving family and a chance to reach her potential, not to be hidden away in a mental institution.

Stephen

Stephen30421111111 (3)Guardian Angelstephen-2017-croppedBoy, born June 2006
Minimal brain dysfunction, pyramid insufficiency, secondary cardiomyopathy, anomalous chord of the left heart ventricle, hypermobility of hip joints, concomitant alternating convergent squint.

From a family who met him in late 2013:
Stephen was in Riley’s groupa.  We saw him a lot during our 7 weeks of visits.  He stood out because he’s 7 yo and taller than the other kids in his groupa of mostly 4-5 yo’s.  He is a SWEET, sweet boy.  He has a great smile with dimples.    He’s not overly active (not hyper).  Very obedient/cooperative and follows instructions and the flow of the groupa well.  An easy going kiddo.  He doesn’t seem to have very significant needs.  He functions very “typically”, maybe just mild delays.  One thing I’ll never forget about Stephen…  one time when we were invited to watch a performance the kids were putting on, we were one of the only people in the audience.  He stood there, singing and doing the body motions to the production just as well as could be.  He kept looking right at my husband and I like he was performing just for us.  He just seemed to love having someone be there for him and encourage him, and nod and smile and let him know he was doing a good job.  He was working so hard to do his best and he did so well!  It was sweet and sad all at the same time….knowing we weren’t his mama and papa and he didn’t have anyone there to give him that recognition forever, that he so appreciated.  He would make such a delightful son!  We would have brought him home too but were only homestudy approved for one boy.   He’s in a good orphanage that provides good care and services.  But who knows where he’ll be transferred to when they no longer have space for him (he’s already over age.)  I have pictures and video of him.  Such a kind, happy little boy….he needs a family!!!

Large families welcome; married couples only.

Kristopher

2015

2015

Boy, Born May 2007

HIV+, FAS,  heart defect, vision issues (blind in one eye), moderate mental delay

Relisted: Feb 28, 2014

Kristopher finally available again!!  Kristopher is a handsome young man with blonde hair and brown eyes.   He is very active and is said to be always happy, but he is quite delayed.  Kristopher has significant vision issues, which may or may not be correctable.  He shows many facial and medical features of FAS.

***He can be adopted with Jessica and/or Emerson if a family is interested and approved in their home study ***

From a family who met him in early 2014:  Kristopher is such a sweet boy, and I think he would have so much potential in a loving home! He is very small for his age; he was 6, but looked like about 4 years old. He was definitely more mentally delayed than the other boys in his group, but he could answer questions appropriately, followed directions, could eat by himself and get dressed to go outside with little help. One time we played a game like ring-around-the-rosy, and he knew the words to the song and how to play along. He loved when my husband lifted him up high in the air. His eyesight is poor, and they said he is blind in one eye. He had trouble doing a puzzle, but we weren’t sure if it was a cognitive issue, or because he couldn’t see the pieces well. They told us he has some sort of heart condition, which might require surgery. We did see him showing rocking behavior at times. He got along well with the other kids, although he often played by himself, probably because of cognitive differences. He is so precious and really needs a family!

From a family who met him in October 2012:  Kristopher is a super-sweet boy who is 5 but looks 2 and is happy ALL the time.  He needs to live near a large medical facility, have heart surgery (unless it’s too late), and probably needs a small family that can commit to pretty full care for him. He is darling!

Hydrocephalus, mental delay

Listed: February 25, 2014

From a family who met him in January 2014:  We saw Brad quite a few times while we visited our daughter. Brad is very short for his age, and his head is definitely big proportional to his body. We observed him dancing in a recital two different times. He seemed coordinated. He is curious and intelligent. Brad always had a twinkle in his eye! I would love to talk about Brad to seriously interested parents.
