Mild Mental Delays

From a family that met her in early 2015:
She is very happy, loves to take pictures of everything especially selfies! She speaks some English and has been hosted before. I think she would LOVE to help cook and clean as long as she had a mom to do it with! She liked dressing up and had skirts on most days. She clung to me often and even kissed me when she said goodbye for the last time. She was very bouncy possibly even a little hyper but not totally obnoxious. I was also told she can be bad but I didn’t see any inappropriate behaviors while I was there.

Austin #22-1

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOBoy, age 1
Diagnosis: CP

Austin’s medical reports indicate that he has spastic CP in all 4 limbs. Videos were taken of him in February 2015 that show him standing while holding the hands of a caregiver and taking steps to walk across the room. He is also using his arms and hands to reach for toys, hold them and manipulate them. He receives massages and therapy daily. The orphanage director (who is a pediatrician) reports that he can move around in a walker, pronounces a few words, and eats from a spoon. She believes that his development will follow a normal course.

Photos and videos from Feb 2015 are available through the agency.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, he will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for him.

Sabrina #11-47

Brandi

BrandiGuardian AngelGirl, Born August 2007
brain malformations, bilateral hearing loss, significant cognitive delays, heart condition strabismus, anemia

Brandi is a beautiful 7 year old girl. She is listed with bilateral hearing loss, but can definitely hear, as she will turn around and look for the person calling her name, and does respond to commands given if she chooses (if she doesn’t, she screams/attempts to run/swats at the caregiver). Cognitively, she is very delayed, more like a toddler, in ability to understand what’s going on around her, and in her responses, and appropriateness. She also has strabismus in both eyes, and has both a heart condition and anemia. She does NOT have CP, nor microcephaly. She does have brain malformations, significant developmental delays, and many stimming behaviors that are typical of lower functioning autism. She is completely nonverbal.

Families interested in Brandi should be aware that she appears to have autism, and that it impacts her significantly. She is a “runner” and will bolt and run unless contained or restrained and potential families need to be aware that this is common in autism, and that they will need to take appropriate measures to keep her safe in a home and family. She has a history of aggression when changes occur, such as a move, or unexpected event, which include biting peers and adults, and she struggled for at least a year after her last orphanage change four years ago, but is doing better now. However, as many with autism thrive on routine and predictability, families need to be aware that she may handle a transition poorly, especially at first. She has excellent mobility, and is very typically sized for a normal 7 year old in weight and height, and when she resists, it is challenging for a grown woman to hold her back. She has been in a school for the deaf, however, she knows no sign language nor does she read lips. She is very much in her own world in many ways. She enjoys music and will sometimes clap, but remains disconnected from the group and does not interact with adults (was not seen with peers).

Brandi attempts to smell/lick everything that is handed to her and when she realizes it isn’t food, she is not typically interested. The nannies report that she has an excellent appetite, and that she enjoys eating. She stims by rocking, throwing herself back and forth, sucking all four fingers on her hand, grunting, and moaning/shrieking. She walks with a lurching gallop. She flaps her hands often. A potential family should be aware that she has no awareness of danger, no fear of strangers and is very much like a very young child emotionally and cognitively, but physically is strong and very mobile. She currently takes psychiatric medications to assist in sleep and behavior.

She is a lovely little girl, with beautiful blond hair and clear complexion. She is in a good orphanage where she is well cared for. Families need to research autism, and be comfortable and familiar with caring safely for a child with the issues mentioned above, in order to provide Brandi with a safe, loving home.

Joshua #5-20

Joshua2

Joshua 2015Boy, age: 7
Moderate mental delay; significant disturbance in the behavior requiring care and treatment; slightly hyperkinetic behavior; strabismus (wears glasses)

Joshua spent the first 6 years of his life in an orphanage surrounded by children much younger than him. As a result, he was not held to age appropriate expectations. He has recently been moved to a group home with children in his age range and significant improvements in his development have already been observed.

While living in his previous environment, he was often bribed to get compliance. As a result, he learned that if he acted badly, someone would give him a “present” in order to get him to behave. This has resulted in him not understanding how to regulate his behavior and in him having negative behaviors simply for the sake of getting a “reward” in order to get him to act appropriately. He needs a family that is willing to provide a structured family environment with consistency in teaching him how to build his own personal boundaries, how to respect other people’s personal boundaries, how to appropriately regulate his emotions, and how to appropriately respond and handle his emotions.

The staff at the group home HAS seen progress in the short time that he has been in their facility. They are working with him on learning to take care of himself, follow the routines of the group home, and how to deal with his emotions when he is upset or frustrated. He is an active little boy who loves to play outside and listen to music. At this time, he prefers the attention of the adults over interacting with other children, but this is also a learned behavior that the staff is working to address.

Observations from someone who has met him:
Joshua does have behavior issues, and needs a family who can be FIRM and invest the time needed with him.  He should be the youngest child in a family, so he doesn’t inadvertently hurt younger children.  It is possible that he is on the Autism spectrum, but autism is not in his official file.  A family who met him is willing to talk to families who are seriously considering adopting Joshua.

Paige had previously been living with her mother until she lost her rights.

She can sit independently and can crawl! Her speech is not well developed but she can partially understand what you are saying.  She has a very short attention span.

Update June 2013:
Lovely Paige has hair now!  She broke my heart.  She was just sitting on the couch rocking back and forth and didn’t respond at all when I came over to her. Poor, sweet thing!! The nannys love her, but she needs more than they can give. I am not sure if the move was hard on her or what but she just rocked and rocked.

Update June 2013:

Shayla

 shayla june 2013Girl, born 2004

Diagnoses: deep mental delay. Cerebral paralysis- double spastic form, microcephaly. Strabismus, divergent squint, and Optic atrophy. First degree anemia.

Sweet little Shayla could tremendously use a family and medical attention to help her thrive. She has already been living in this orphanage for 3 years and risks soon having to be transferred to a place where adoption will be next to impossible.

Her speech is not well developed, she holds toys in her hands for brief periods of time (but she sure does love to hold stuffed animals!), she has a reaction when you say her name but she is not able to communicate back but she smiles. She walks with support- can”t walk independently. Children in this orphanage need families! They do not receive enough interaction/therapy to help them thrive. They are seen as hopeless but we know that is not true!

Update June 2013:
This is not a great picture [on the right] but she would NOT sit still. She was wanting to move!! She thought it was so funny and would not stop laughing and rocking back and forth about the camera. The nannys also were laughing with her- her laugh and happiness is very infectious.

Lauren says “HI Mama!!  I’m here waiting for you!”  (in this photo she is riding a rocking horse!)

Lauren is a super-sweet and active little girl.  She is very social and affectionate, and will do well in a family setting.

From her medical records:  chondrodysplasia

As with all children living in these difficult conditions,  this child’s cognitive development has regressed significantly since he/she was younger.  It is of crucial importance that any family considering the adoption of an older child from the mental institution setting be well prepared for what to expect with regards to how the neglect and lack of adequate medical care and nourishment has affected this child.    These children all have TREMENDOUS potential for improvement, and deserve to have a life outside these four walls.

Mild to moderate delays

Another lovely young lady, still waiting for her forever family.

Update June 2013:
This picture does not show off her true beauty! She loved wearing this dress as when she danced the beads went flying. She has some pretty good dancing moves! I am not sure if she knew the words to the song but her mouth moved the entire time. She also rocks when she sits and does present as delayed.  She has a very sweet, shy smile.

Look at Delta- isn’t she beautiful?! She is SO, SO sweet- we gave the kids lollipops and she grabbed my hand and squeezed it and said thank you. She is very “with it”- the kids danced for me and she was one of the very few that was on beat! She is able to follow directions and imitate. Justine

Girl, Born 2001
From her medical records: congenital microcephaly, autism

Justine is a pretty girl with dark hair and eyes. She is fully mobile and active. Her face bears features of FAS, but this is not documented and is only a cautionary disclosure.

Kiersten

Guardian AngelGirl, Born  2000

ALIVE and WAITING!

A question was raised about whether Kiersten had passed away, but this photo was taken March 14, 2012 ;) She still needs a family!

Isn’t Kiersten beautiful? She is 15 years old but is still very much a toddler. She is not able to walk on her own. There is nothing in her medical records to indicate why she is so delayed, and she does not show obvious facial features of FAS…her needs are quite unknown.

From her medical records: significant mental delay, congenital hypothyroidism

As with all children living in these difficult conditions, this child’s cognitive development has regressed significantly since he/she was younger. It is of crucial importance that any family considering the adoption of an older child from the mental institution setting be well prepared for what to expect with regards to how the neglect and lack of adequate medical care and nourishment has affected this child. Alisha

Alisha June 2013Alisha 2012Girl, Born 2003

Alisha was born with Penn-Sjogren Syndrome.     We do not have any other info indicating why she may be cognitively and physically delayed.  She has cognitive delays, and a divergent squint.

Update 2012:
Little Miss Alisha’s eyesight has regressed significantly.  She needs a family!
She can’t move by herself but she tries to sit. Her speech is not developed. Mental processes are not formed. Ideation is not developed.  Alisha is friendly and quiet. Her emotional world is poor.  She needs care constantly.

Update June 2013:
Look how good she looks! When I saw her she was sitting on the floor with another child, and she reached out and tugged on my pant leg almost like “look at me!”  I said her name, and she gave me a big grin.

Chrystyna

Guardian Angelchrystyna2015-croppedGirl, Born 2002

SIGNIFICANT RISK, PLEASE ADOPT ME SOON!!

Chrystyna is a beautiful, brown haired, brown eyed girl who deserves a chance at a better life!  Her official orphanage papers say she has developmental delays/difficulties from birth, but nothing more specific than that.  It is possible she has FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome).  Her biological mother  was deprived her parental rights in December 2004, and the biological father is not known.  Chrystyna has so much potential, and will be a precious gift to any family who adopts her.

Chrystyna is already living in an institution, so we need a family for her right away!

UPDATE:  God has been watching Chrystyna.  She was recently transferred out of the institution into a wonderful facility, where they teach these children, work with them, and they appear very well cared for.  The difference in the few girls who were transferred OUT of the institution is incredible!   Please give these girls a second chance for a loving family!

If you are unfamiliar with FAS, please spend some time researching this condition.  Just as with Down syndrome, FAS and FAE have a wide variation of effects on each child, both medically, physically, and cognitively.   This is typically dependent on how long during the pregnancy the mother consumed alcohol, and of course, how much.   There is no way to know this ahead of time.

From a family who met her, Sept 2012:
She is getting settled into her new environment. She seems to be very comfortable in her groupa. She is very beautiful and still has a lot of potential.  She deserves a chance!

From someone who met her, June 2013:
During the music performance, she was constantly stimming really fast (like it looks like she is being fast forwarded) and after they finished she was taken out by a nanny. Not sure what is going on with her;  If interested families want to see the videos they are welcome to! I know a family tried to take pictures of her last year but couldn’t get a good one because she moved so much!

Anastasia is a lovely young lady with blonde hair and blue eyes.  Anastasia was born with CP, and has difficulty walking, but she is very smart and affectionate and doing well.    Physical therapy will work wonders for her.  She will be a wonderful daughter for anyone who considers her!

Update June 2013:
This girl is a dancer! She does not let her CP stop her and she was up and dancing up and down to the music. She is mobile and does walk unassisted but poor thing desperately needs PT and is not receiving it. Her legs do not go straight

Soleil

Soleil June 2013Girl, born 2001
Mild to moderate mental delays

Soleil comes very highly recommended from the orphanage director. She has shown great progress since she entered the orphanage.

She is running out of time — a family must be found for her before she turns 16!

Update June 2013:
Soliel really stands out.  She is a helper. She was helping the younger children stand up and dance and they were watching her to mimic what to do. She seems to be one of children that helps the orphanage staff as she is able to follow directions. She can read and speaks very clearly when asked questions. It is unclear why she is in this specific orphanage and they pointed her out specifically as needing a family! She is a very sweet girl who said she has dreamed about having a family but isn’t sure if she will ever have one- it just about broke my heart. There is also video available with her in it!

Bernadette #521

BernadetteBernadette is a 4 year old girl who has hydrocephalus (shunt installed), infantile cerebral palsy, hypotrophy, strabismus, significantly delayed physical and neuropsychological development.

She has recently started making attempts to crawl; turns from back to belly; remains seated when provided with support; produces random sounds; stops crying when she receives individual attention; rejoices when involved in interactions with adults.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, she will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for her.

Very sweet girl who loved to practice English with me. Very tight scissor gait but walks with walker and up and down stairs. She also can hop a bit like a frog on hands and feet when she doesn’t have her walker. She is polite and likes chocolate! She seems a little shy but not so much she wouldn’t talk to us. Rebecca

RebeccaRebecca-224x300-croppedGirl, born 2004
Down syndrome

From an adoptive family who met her in Jan 2015:  ”I sat next to Rebecca today at an orphanage Christmas concert. She is SO cute! When she came in to sit down, she was SO excited to be there. She saw a boy in the row in front of us that she knew, and they greeted each other warmly. Her smile lit up her whole face.

We were sitting in the last row, so she stood quiet and attentive during the concert, her hands on the back of the chair in front of her, peering between adults’ shoulders to see her friends and classmates perform. Her hair was elaborately pulled back into a series of little ponytails on top of her head, which were then braided together. The caregiver sitting next to her obviously likes her quite a lot. At the end, of the concert, all the kids who are mobile were taken up to dance around the Christmas tree, and she and little Wetherby (who really is quite little)! danced next to each other in the circle. ”

*** Rebecca can be be adopted with WETHERBY, if a family is interested and approved in their home study.  ***

Geoff #504

Geoff 504Boy, 2 years old

This little boy was born prematurely with very low birth weight and he had quite a few issues in the early neonatal period. He has been diagnosed with infantile cerebral palsy; internal hydrocephalus; microcephaly; inguinal hernia; convergent strabismus. He has delayed physical and neuropsychological development.

Geoff is described as a calm child. He reacts to light, sound, tactile and heat stimulation; smiles when someone talks to him and responds by producing sound combinations; demonstrates different reactions of pleasure and displeasure; stands up for a while when placed in a baby walker. He is responsive while playing with an adult.

He has started eating better and gaining weight. Some positive changes are seen in his emotional development – he smiles more and more often.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, he will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for him.

Kaylee #1805

KayleeGirl, born October 2008
Cerebral Palsy

She is very sweet and positive child and we hope that she will find her family.

Enjoys the appearance of a preferable to her adult. Differentiates voice and tone of speaking. Laughs out loud, reacts positively to a corporal intervention in the form of teasing. Senses and react with understanding, when she’s place in the stroller for getting out for a walk outside. Enjoys the presence of a familiar adult, has built a referent relationship with a member of the staff.

She can sit independently, tries to imitate eating, which is expressed by holding a spoon, placing it in an eating bowl, and gesturing toward her mouth.

Stands up independently in her crib, steps sideways using support. She can pull the crib of another child and that is her way to communicate. Grabs a given toy and places it in her mouth or she drops it on the ground. Can open a door. She is a child with a preference for music. A person who takes care of her, shares that music provokes positive emotions. This fact is good to be considered in relation to applying music therapy when working with the child. Due to rehabilitation work, she makes steps by “holding” her legs in correct position. For 5-10 minutes stays upright with support.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, she will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for her.

IsaacBoy, born March 2013
Condition after a brain hemorrhage. Cyst in the left cerebral hemisphere. Microcephaly. Spastic quadriparesis.
Cryptorchidism. Anemic syndrome. Behind in his neuro-psychical development.

Isaac holds his head up when placed on his stomach or taken in arms. Does not turn independently from back to stomach and back. No good foothold.  Makes random sounds (vocalizations mainly). Flinches at loud noise, does not turn his head toward the sound, listens to an adult speech.

The child does not looks at person towering over him. Do not follow with eyes moving object or person. Does not reach for toys. Grabs and holds a suitable toy placed in his hand, does not observe it, does not manipulate with it.  He does not distinguish friends from strangers. Tolerates physical contact. Respond positively to teasing by an adult – gets lively, vocalizes, laughs out loud.

Information from the family who adopted her close friend:

According to our daughter she is very sweet, she is neat (as in keeps things organized and clean), she loves to help, and she was a very loyal and good friend. I do know that after a while, the way she was treated at the orphanage caused her to cry often and thus they sent her to a different school. My daughter was similar and is doing wonderfully … her aunt has gone to see her once or twice and worries about her condition there.

Kiki #

KikiGirl, born August 2010

Kiki first lived with her mother.  In 2013 she was placed in an institution that takes care for special needs children. She suffers from epilepsy and mental delays. There is a delay in her motor and neuropsychological development. She shows increased muscle activity, cannot speak, although she makes attempts and makes some sounds.  She has learned to walk and now runs. She is on drug treatment for her epilepsy.  Needs an adult’s help with dressing and toileting. She is relatively happy, calm and is not a problem child. She does not fear to interact with adults who knows. Suffers from strabismus and will probably need glasses or surgical correction.

Kiki has features consistent with a diagnosis of FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome).  This is not a diagnosis, but a cautionary disclosure.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, she will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for her.

Kraig #29-10

SAMSUNGSAMSUNGDOB: 2009
Diagnosis: Cerebral Palsy- spastic quadriplegia /more visible in the upper limbs, Retinopathy II type – Total detachment of both retinas; delayed development

Kraig is 4 years old. He is considered blind as a result of an injury during birth and surgeons in his home country have determined that his eyes can not be repaired. He is sociable, especially with adults he knows. He walks holding on to one hand of an adult and around an immovable support. He will take several independent steps and it is very likely that the only reason he is not 100% independent with his walking is due to his hesitation to walk since he can not see where he is going. He shows interest in the surrounding environment and listens to its noises. He eats from a spoon and is learning to feed himself. He can get the spoon to his mouth, but is still learning how to scoop food onto the spoon while compensating for his lack of vision. He plays with toys. He babbles and says some syllables spontaneously. He interacts with adults. He follows verbal directions and will play games in which he has to follow verbal instructions (raise your hands, clap your hands, etc). He enjoys music.

Several photos and a detailed video from April 2013 are available.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, he will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for him.

Kollen #58-11

KollenBoy, Age: 3
Diagnosis: Cerebral Palsy- mixed form (impacts his legs); delays in development

Kollen has started taking independent steps. He also crawls, sits, pulls up to a standing position holding on to a support, stays up for a short time without support, and walks holding on to two hands. His fine motor skills are improving. He fits in 3 cups, winds and unwinds toys on screws, “reads” books. He plays well with toys and explores their functions, imitates activities demonstrated to him, knocks on door before going in, claps his hands, stamps his feet, shows where his belly is. He eats with a spoon and attempts to do it independently. He is a calm and quiet child, makes a good eye contact, smiles, delights in interaction, recognizes and differentiates between the adults, has an emotional bond to a caregiver that works 1:1 with him. He pronounces sounds and syllables and currently says 3 words. He also used gestures to communicate his wants and needs.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, he will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for him.

Percival #487

PercivalBoy, 8 years old

Malformation syndrome; severe mental delay; protein-calorie malnutrition; ptosis (drooping eyelid) of both eyes; delayed neuropsychological and psychomotor development in all areas; delayed physical development.

Due to his condition his gross motor skills are limited as are his social skills and speech.

Percival is undergoing systematic rehabilitation – he moves around slowly and insecurely when held by the hands. The coordination of his movements needs to improve. He can stand up independently – he crawls so as to reach a fixed support to hold on to and then he stands up. He goes up the stairs while holding onto the railings with both hands. When going down the stairs he seeks an adult’s support.  He has significantly delayed speech development. He does not seem to always understand the meaning of what he is told. His expressive speech is underdeveloped.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, he will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for him.

Deenah #6-20

Deenah (10)Age: 7
Diagnosis: Cerebral Palsy

Deenah was raised by her birth mother until she was 5 years old. She was removed from the home at that time by social services because the mother could not meet the child’s medical needs.

Deenah has high muscle tone as a result of the CP. She would greatly benefit from the care available in the US, such as botox treatments. She does have some movements in her limbs. She can raise her right arm to shoulder width and will open her hands. She’s receiving physical therapy to assist with her movements. When placed on her stomach, she will lift her head and can control it/move it around to look at desired objects. She attempts to roll over on her back and the staff is working with her on this skill. She sits in a positioning chair and while in the chair, she turns her head toward voices or toys.
She enjoys interactions with other people and will smile and laugh when interacted with. She cries when she wants attention. She appears to understand some spoken commands as she will lift her arm and attempt to hand a toy that she is holding to someone when asked.

Photos and videos from August 2014 are available. In the videos, she is smiling and interacting with the adults in the videos.

Because we only have this child’s file for a short time, she will not be able to receive donations until a family is found for her.
