Will #21-1
Will can walk holding the hand of an adult but is not yet walking independently. He can pull to a stand, walk around with a hand on the wall and is starting to let go and take 1-2 steps on his own.
He doesn’t show much interest in toys and is described as “very serious” in his mannerisms. He will respond when called by name and does smile when engaged by the staff. He is currently being given medications in an attempt to improve his cognition. He can eat with a spoon and drink from a cup. He is beginning to make initial sounds (“ba-ba”, “da-da”), but is not yet talking. He attends a specialized kindergarten class.
UPDATE from summer 2011: Will has been transferred to a different facility. He has not progressed much developmentally. He is still unable to walk and gets around by scooting on his bottom. If placed on his hands and knees, he will crawl short distances. He will not reach for objects and if given a toy, he immediately drops it or throws it. He makes stereo-typical movements with his hands and focuses on his fingers. He enjoys attention from the staff and other children and will demonstrate happiness when someone pays attention to him. He does not actively engage with groups of children and is described as "apathetic". He is completely cared for by the staff.
